Some perspective: I am writing as a strong PC/Windows user who bought this device as my 2nd Apple device after purchasing the iPhone.
It was infuriating not to have a good word doc or excel sheet equivalent, so I adjusted by downloading apps. It seemed anytime I wanted to use a windows like feature that was unavailable, I had to download another app. Therefore, this review is about my frustration in the software, rather than the mechanical aspects. Mechanically, this was a solidly built tablet, with glare in bright light, that fit well in a white coat pocket. I just couldn't overcome the software so I sold it. It was like a large iPhone without phone features.

This is a beautiful device which needs protection through a case. The only thing i don't like on this ipad is the sound is much worse than on my nexus 7 from 2o13...

The display is not retina quality, but it's easily better than the iPad 1 or the iPad 2. Colors are good and brightness is good. I really like that they were able to shrink the bevels on the sides, it keeps the mini portable enough to slide in your pocket in a pinch. It's not comfortable in the back pocket of your jeans, but it fits there for short trips or if you need a hand in a hurry.
I haven't pushed performance enough yet so it's hard to say where it sets with regards to that. Trying out a few videos I didn't notice any lag or missed frames and the actual UI is smooth and responsive. Because it's screen is lower resolution, you can still play iPad games on it with a good frame rate.
Sound is surprisingly good and loud for a product this size. The only downsize to the sound is the fact that the stereo speakers are placed near each other on one of the narrow sides of the device. In cinema/ landscape orientation, the sound is on one side or the other. Even in portrait orientation, the stereo effect is not great. I tend to listen using headphones so I'm not sure it's a huge issue. It's a 3.5 star sound system, great sound, but frustrating placement.
The lightning adaptor is a nice upgrade. You do lose access to older accessories, but it's quicker to use than the 30 pin adaptor (or microUSB, but that's another story). Charging is fast, 30 minutes to top it off which is awesome.
------Update ------
After a few weeks of use, I've only grown to like this more. It's so small, it's easy to tote along everywhere. I've been doing some photo editing on it and it works fairly well, but sometimes when you are trying complex edits or trying to undo a bunch of things in a row there is a bit of lag. I still haven't noticed the lag on video playback some of the other reviewer mention, but again I don't use YouTube very much.
------Comparison Shopping ------
The iPad mini shines when:
* Apps are a priority (in my case, access to a few specific iPad only apps is a big showstopper)
* Weight and portability are a important
* You want the rear facing camera (The iPad 4G has this too)
* You have invested in Apple accessories
* Ease of use is a big concern
* A solid, well engineered product appeals to you
The iPad 4th gen shines when:
* Reading is your biggest use, the retina display is fantastic and the mini doesn't compete.
* You want a future proof product; the A6X chip is a scorcher compared to the mini and it is almost certain to be supported longer.
* The bigger size is an asset
The Nexus or the Kindle Shine when:
* Price is your biggest concern
* Nexus has built in GPS and NFC (though navigation is limited unless you get the 3G version)
* You are using it exclusively for web surfing, reading PDFs, and watching videos.
* Hack-ability and open-ness are important
* You are invested in the Google or Amazon's eco-system

Im so happy with my iPad, the delivery time Was so fast (i live in dominican Republic) and the iPad came in Good condition and protected. I Was surprised cause the iPad cames with a excellent cover! The batterie works Pretty Good i Been using it from tuesday 11pm til' wednesday 11pm too and has 35% left. The software works perfectly and Im happy by now. The only Thing is has a small crash in the screen but nothing important. I recomended this product.

Most people might already know this but I wanted to mention that the kindle app is slightly different on other tablets. I don't know why but the kindle app for the ipad mini gives you more options than the Samsung galaxy tablets. Apple's kindle app lets you change the font and lets you highlight text in 4 colors. You can't change the font with Samsung's kindle app and you can only highlight with 1 color instead of 4. I also want to mention the color sepia is also different in other devices. I personally prefer apples version of the color sepia because it doesn't burn my eyes when I'm reading books.
If you are planning on buying this to play games, I would highly recommend getting 32gb or more. 16gb is really not a lot of space if you are downloading a lot of games. Apple actually has a lot of great games so trust me will download more games than you expected...
The only thing I don't like about the iPad Mini with retina display is that a lot of the free games have way too much adds and commercials. Other than that I can't think of anything else I don't like about this device. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone reading this review.

It's very light. I never get tired from holding it. The display is superb. It's very fast. I really think apple achieved perfection with this jewel. It can't be improved, I've been brainstorming how from the time I started using two days back. There is zero chance of me going back to regular size ipad or tablet.
The processor is the A7, rather than the A5 in the first mini. It's much faster than the first mini. Geekbench timed it as three or four times faster depending on activity. It has the same resolution as the Air, but on a smaller screen, therefore the ppi, pixels per inch, is higher than the Air.
Much ink spilled about the color gamut issue, namely that the mini only reproduces sixty three percent of the gamut. I think it is true the colors are a bit washed out. I had an ipad 4 before this, and the display of my mini, while beautiful and very sharp, does seem subdued over my ipad 4 screen. But it could be psychological bc of the smaller screen.
As to the debate of mini vs Air.........if you are the stationary type, the Air is probably better. I dunno though, I AM the stationary type and I still like the mini tons better than my ipad 4. It's amazing we as a people have become spoiled to the point a 1.5 lb like the ipad 4 seems heavy. But it does.
I think the mini is awesome for reading but everything else too like TV and movies thru netflix or iTunes or whatever. The minis form factor can't be beat. You can hold it in one hand, and I have very small hands. It weighs only .75 lb. it is such a great product. I have never spent a better four hundred bucks in my life and I regret having to spend nine months with that behemoth that wuz my ipad 4 when I could have been canoodling with a mini that whole time ;(

I am having several issues with my iPad mini 32gb I ordered. I have noticed a very faint and periodic, not constant nor popping up in the same spot every time , spectrum of colors that I have seen and initially noticed in Safari around my keyboard. Also, it seems that the touchscreen may have issues too. It seems to lock up and respond or catch my repeated attempts when attempting any and all available touch features and characters on the screen. It may be that the device is "locking" up on me entirely possibly resulting in the touch screen not responding, and it could be a lemon, just flat out defective. I am not sure but if these above issues sound familiar, please share. I am running it over to the apple store tomorrow so that they can actually see the device and give me their feedback. I hope to get some direction so that I know how serious the issue may or may not be and where the problem stems from. Wish me luck! I will try to update on here as my situation progresses.

To experiment I synced my mac's itunes with this guy and the 16 gig version can hold over 1000 songs, dozens of podcasts, 50+ books, documents of unknown quantity, and hundreds of pictures with ease. I only have 2 gb left now, of course, but I don't even have anything else to put on it, haha. On the other hand, if you prefer video downloads, you might go for a bigger model. I do wish the embedded version wasn't $100 difference, because that would be awesome. But in our wifi-riddled world, at least in my city, there have been few times I've not had any access.
Overall, a very worthy tablet. If it weren't for my WoW, Indesign, Photoshop, and other such programs, I could see this replacing my laptop.

-Polished, well built hardware
-Decent battery life
-Works great with iTunes; syncs over wifi
-Lightweight
-Large app store
-Good resolution screen
Cons:
Missing many industry standard features and the interface is slow to use (not very productive/robust interface).
-No multi window
-No USB 3.0
-No microusb (need another proprietary cable)
-No USB input (need adapter)
-No headphones included
-No screen timeout options
-No GPS in WiFi model
-No infrared blaster for remote control (would be perfect for being a living room device)
-No camera LED
-No fingerprint sensor
-No external storage slot (microSD would be great and cut down costs)
-No front-facing speakers
-Screen hurts eyes after prolonged use
-Power button hard to reach
-Keyboard shows all CAPS when typing in lowercase
-Settings are buried (no settings/wifi/bt shortcuts in Control Center)
-App switching screen doesn't auto-rotate
-App store always prompts for passwords even when not making purchases (even prompts when writing app reviews)
-Automatic brightness doesn't always work
-Notification center useless when calendar isn't used (more useful for phones)
-USB cable is weak and easy to break
-Speakers get blocked by hand when in landscape mode

She was enamored with my full-size iPad, and was always asking to borrow it. It was time to get her one of her own!
I like that she can do educational apps in the car on the ride to and from school. She can also interact with fun resources, like Wonder Workshop's Dot and Dash. This is a great STEM resource for her.
The iPad also allows her to read books, using the Kindle app, watch movies when we're stuck somewhere for a long time on Netflix, and even keep her our calendar.

PRO:
1) thin and light
2) LOVE THE RETINA DISPLAY
3) easy to hold with one hand
4) Great for road trips or plane trips without having a big tablet
5) Compact to pack
6) Can use DATA anywhere there is signal!
CONS:
1) NO adobe flash
2) Can't download apps bigger than 1GB off of WIFI =(

I have one as well and not being an Apple person, it was a bit of a transition but not as much as I expected. Highly recommended.

To give full disclosure, we love apple products. Our family pretty much owns every single iThing that apple makes. My son's been using an ipod touch practically ever since he was born. So...a little over a year ago, we upgraded him to an ipad 2, which he absolutely loved. With apps like Tozzle, Teach me Toddler, and the Toca Boca apps, which kid wouldn't? My son has learned so much from using the educational apps on a daily basis. Here's a question for you though...
What are 2, 3 and even some year 4 year olds better at than being sponges and quickly learning things?
BREAKING THINGS
An ipad is most definitely something most of us can not afford to be broken. So to protect mine, I bought a OtterBox Defender Series Case with Screen Protector and Stand for the New iPad (4th Generation), iPad 2 and 3 - Black. Once on, this case is just awesome and protects your ipad like a tank. But to a 2 year old with slippery fingers, it might as well weigh 50 pounds at that point. Now that my son is 3, he's gotten used to it and knows to carry it with both hands, but it's still a little heavy and bulky for him.
This is where the ipad mini comes into play. I was a little hesitant at first to pre-order one since it didn't come with a retina display like the 2. I went ahead and convinced myself that we needed a an upgrade in gigs. Who knew that 16 gigs on an ipad 2 would not be enough? I got the 32gig mini in white and setup was a breeze. I was able to just plug it in and choose the last back up of the ipad 2 for configuration. It immediately loaded all our favorite apps, songs, pictures, and movies to the mini without hassle. The look on his face when I handed it to him was just priceless. He had the biggest smile on his face and his exact words
were, "it's a baby ipad."
He absolutely loves this thing even more. He's been using it solely for about a week now and has not dropped it once. We got him the i-Blason ArmorBox Series 2 Layer Hybrid Protection Case For Apple New iPad Mini 7.9 Inch with Kick Stand Kids Friendly (Multi Color) - Blue / White and Ionic Screen Protector Film MATTE (Anti-Glare) for New Apple iPad Mini 7.85 inch / the iPad Mini 7 Inch / built-in Stand for Apple iPad Mini 7.85 inch Latest Generation 4G LTE (3-pack) just in case though. Even with this case, it's still far lighter than the ipad 2 with the otterbox. He can now easily carry the "baby ipad" from room to room.
All in all, the ipad mini is basically an ipad 2 that went on a diet and exercised. It's smaller, lighter, and faster. Perfect for your little one at home who's curious about everything. The Ipod touch was too little for our son, the regular Ipad was too big, the mini...Is just right =) We still kept the ipad 2, cause that is perfect for mommy and daddy. Hopefully this was helpful for parents. Please feel free to ask a question or post a comment on this review. Thank you!!!

Perfect for calling application since she does not have and iPhone she uses her iPad mini instead to communicate with my brother in the US or me and my sister in Seoul, Korea through Viber and Kako Talk and it work just fine.
And since she loved to saved the pictures we send and it has a good storage capacity.
The delivery was faster that the estimated time said which it made it easy since I order meanwhile she was on vacation in the US visiting her sibblings so waiting for it did not alter her traveling schedules.

thanks in advance.

But after trying out an Android tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, 7 inch) and Windows (Toshiba Encore 2), I learned to appreciate MUCH more the dependability, responsiveness, performance, and elegant design of the iPad--whether mini or full-sized.
After 6 months, I wanted to throw my Android tablet against a wall. I returned the Toshiba Windows 8 tablet to the store after four days of intensive use. I picked up the iPad Mini for just $69 more than the Toshiba, and I am VERY happy with it. I carry it everywhere and use it for entertainment, drafting reports and lectures, doing presentations at meetings, reading Kindle books, accessing documents in Dropbox and OneDrive, handling email, listening to music, browsing the internet, and more. And I do it easily and quickly with the latest IOS . . . so different from (and better than) my experience with Android and Windows tablets.

It's the perfect size to tuck into a lunch bag for work or into a pocket on cargo shorts. Although I've found 16g to be plenty of space, models with more storage are also available. Plus, with WiFi available literally everywhere these days, I've never once missed the fact that is doesn't have cellular capabilities.
If you're on the fence about purchasing a hand-held device with more screen space than a phone but at a more affordable price than a full-size iPad, stick with Apple products and check out the iPad mini; I promise you won't regret it.
I also highly recommend the KHOMO Dual Case for your iPad Mini because it covers the iPad in full, yet has the necessary openings for the connectors, buttons, microphone and speakers. The KHOMO case also has a built-in smart cover that protects the iPad's front and can also be folded to serve as a built-in stand. I can honestly say it is the best case I have purchased for my iPad yet! You can find the KHOMO case here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009UZ3TF4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B009UZ3TF4&linkCode=as2&tag=newcams-20
