- Monitor looks very good, and has slim bezels.
- Stands is very sturdy, feels like its made from metal, covered with plastic. Very nice and gives premium feel to it.
Also has very good ergonomics. Tilts, swivels and allows for height adjustment. I had no problem to make it
comfortable for me to use.
- There is no backlit bleed to speak of and very little "VA glow" (nothing compare to any IPS monitor).
Using it in dark room was very pleasant. Blacks are very deep, a lot better compare to TN or IPS monitors, one of
advantages of VA panels.
Other colours are vivid and I haven't had any odd feeling that they were over-saturated. No dead pixels at all.
- 144Hz is what makes it special. Anyone coming from 60Hz monitor will feel the difference straight ahead.
If you have powerful enough graphics card to make use of 144Hz refresh rate, you'll get very smooth experience
from any game.
- Curve is nice addition and doesn't make anything distorted. All
monitors should have curve to my humble opinion :)
And now I'll come to one bad point, which for me, was a deal breaker and the only reason why I'll be returning it.
Best would be if you have watched video that I uploaded.
Two monitors are connected and displaying same content.
On left side is the VA panel I'm reviewing, on right IPS monitor.
Notice how stars disappears during camera movement.
Almost all "dark" games I have played on it had same issues with smearing blacks.
On Witcher 3, during night, shadows on trees were kind of flickering. It wasn't that obvious like on uploaded video, but it was noticeable. Mountains on Skyrim were losing a lot of details while movement.
Overall black colour on any brighter background had that issue, which for gaming monitor is unacceptable for me.
I know some VA panels have slower pixel transition than others and looks like that is the case on this one.
Unless I was unlucky and received defective panel :)
Anyway, sorry for long review and I hope it helped someone.
So I searched for an affordable, higher res 144Hz monitor to go with it and thought this was too good to be true when I found this.
There were very few UK reviews, but many of the USA reviews stated that the image was poor out of the box but very good once a bit of time is spent adjusting it.
And that is exactly what I have found. The default settings just did not show the monitor off to it's best. In games, the colours were too red & washed out.
Using the software provided, the picture looked much better, and showed what the monitor is capable of, but then I had to switch between different modes to get the best picture depending on the type of game I was playing.
I quickly got tired of that and decided to adjust the custom setting instead, to try and achieve a single good picture for all games.
In the end, a drop of the red by a few points, and a couple of clicks down on the brightness, and all my games are looking good using this single setting.
Now that is sorted, I will say this - Wow, the picture is fantastic, and all my games have taken on a new look, including feeling more immersive due to the increase in screen size. I have no dead pixels and the monitor looks well made.
The curved screen is a positive I think. It is really not much of a curve, so it almost seems unnecessary, but on the other hand, it brings the outer edges of the screen to the same eye distance as the centre, so overall I think it's a plus. Certainly there's no sign of any distortion. And it does look pretty cool.
This is a great monitor - excellent image, and excellent value for money.
Note to Amazon & prospective buyers: My one complaint is not about the product but about the way the monitor arrived. There was no external Amazon packaging, so anyone can see what it is. The driver also told me that signature was not required & he would have left it on the doorstep if I had not been in (not his fault, but that is what his instructions are for this particular item). He thought that was ridiculous given the value and nature of the item, and I agree with him.
So Amazon, you need to make sure this is a signed for item. And anyone buying, I advise you to be sure to be in to accept the delivery.
SEE IMAGE( As you can see the edge of the text is lighter).
When it comes to colour adjustment, you have complete freedom to adjust it in the OSD settings although I dont find it user friendly and it takes too much horizontal space on your screen. In terms of ergonomics and adjustment, it has everything you would ever want in a monitor. It only lacks pivot which is to be expected for a curved monitor. You can swivel, tilt, lower and raise height. It is the most flexible monitor I have seen online as far as youtube and internet reviews go. The only disadvantage is the fairly long legs which would take up a lot of desk space for me atleast. It hinders with mouse movement and I think it should have been shorter.
For gaming, it has been OK for me, but it didnt meet my expectations. It seems that for me, I have received a panel with a slower pixel transition like the other reviewer has mentioned. I had smearing blacks when it came to darker games. This particular issue bothered me especially when playing a fast paced FPS game such as Siege or really any game in genereal as this smearing issue is prominent throughout using this monitor even with text in 'Dark Mode' for websites such as YouTube. When it comes to motion blue, this is where it become intolerable for me when it comes to both gaming and watching movies. It looked very powdery for movies despite activating medium or even strong overdrive with MBR. The scenes when panned have horrible ghosting making the overall video quality look supbar at best and the best way to describe it is like I am watching from a 480 screen. Ghosting and powderiness still persist even when setting 4K resolution in Youtube. Still image is sharp and as expected except for when there is animation. Therefore, the cons outweighs the pros of this monitor for the purpose I have used it for and will be returning it.
Pros:
- Amazing colour vibrance and reproduction vs TN and IPS
- No dead pixels/ Backlight bleed
-Coating of panel is smooth and is hell of a lot less grainy in comparison to the previous gen TN panels (2014<)
-Still images are smooth and sharp because of the less grainy coating.
- Most flexible monitor I have seen in terms of viewing adjustment
-Curved gives viewing immersion
- Decent viewing angles
-Slim Bezels for modern design and aesthetics
-Exceptional Wire management hole
-Works flawlessly with Gsync (and its buttery smooth)
Cons:
-Subpar Overdrive settings. There seems to be no perfect balance for this monitor. Either you get excessive ghosting at weak and medium overdrive preset or reverse ghosting/ overshoot (results in black trails when panning) in strong preset. Extreme has more emphasis on black trails and MBR makes the screen darker than it already is.
- slow pixel transition result with smearing bright colours in darker backgrounds (especially white text)
- Text is on the softer side and is noticeablely blurry. No image sharpness setting which explains this VA's feature. It's as if the sharpness setting was set to -5 from 0. Long story short, its blurry (but stil readable).
- Not ideal for streaming videos/movies because of the powdery trail despite high resolutions.
- Much more to be desired with the finicky OSD settings.
-Slow pixel transition causes objects in darker backgrounds to flicker which was too distracting when gaming casually.
Streaming while not noticing the powdery motion was impossible for me as it was to distracting and only makes videos look like 480p. I wanted to be able to game and stream on this monitor but it seems that I cant even game properly with the terrible over drive settings of this monitor that has much more to be desired. The fact that the monitor has these features along with the VA panel was a deal breaker for me. Again, this may not be a dealbreaker for most users who are coming from 60hz or being their first monitor. Ignorance is bliss...
Overall i would highly recommend this monitor, great for gaming and watching shows and what not on.
- Slight vertical flickering at 144hz which goes away at 120hz (might be defect of my panel)
- Motion blur, even with overdrive turned up.
this is not a true 1ms panel! 1ms MPRT at best however I have my doubts.
- Freesync turns off overdrive! Which causes so much motion blur and smearing
this monitor becomes borderline unusable
- Overdrive on boost makes the panel very dim
- Out of the box colours left a lot to be desired
A budget 1440p panel that is a (very mediocre) jack of all trades but a master of none.
Would not recommend for colorwork as much better IPS options are plentiful.
Would not recommend for gaming above 60 fps.
I did a lot of research into 144hz monitors before buying this, but the selection of 27" 144hz monitors is pretty slim unless you want to spend a ridiculous amount.
Every review i saw of this monitor said "its not very bright". Now its not the brightest monitor out there, but i can say that its more than bright enough, i have 2 other 27" BenQ monitors, that i always run at 80% brightness which matched this monitor perfectly when it was at full brightness.
I could see someone having issues with this monitor if they're near a window, but lets be realistic, us gamer arent sat in a brightly lit open space, were in an artificial lit small man/woman cave (*other genders may apply")
my gaming room/home office/ hideaway from the wife is approximately 3 m x2.5m, has blackout blinds and is light with a 4 watt led daylight bulb, and its perfect for me.
I am using the freesync functionality. I am using it with G-Sync on a MSI 1060 and so far it has worked flawlessly with a number of games ive played. My only regret about this monitor is that i didnt buy three
My old monitor is a good mid range monitor bought 5 years ago - but as it is a TN panel the picture would change with your viewing angle. I’m currently using my PC as a TV, so wanted something a bit more versatile and a better picture.
This new AOC monitor blows it out of the water. As it is a VA panel I was expecting better colours and contrast, but I got much more than that. I watched a bit of a film I’d seen recently on Amazon Prime (Space Pirate: Captain Harlock), just to compare the picture and I ended up mesmerised by the eye popping colour and picture quality, noticing new details every scene and I watched the whole thing.
I have had the monitor now for 3 weeks, and have played much TV, games - FPS (Wolfenstein), RTS (Endless Space), Space Sim (Elite Dangerous) and keep on noticing details I had not before. Part of this will be the bigger monitor size but my old monitor is pretty big! The real reason is that the picture is so much more vivid, sharper, better in every way.
I read one review claiming there is lots of motion blur with this monitor. Absolute tosh, I would rate this pretty much on par with my old monitor (144hz and a TN panel with 1ms response). I have not noticed any motion blur. If there is any it is miniscule. That reviewer either had a duff monitor or has superhuman eye reflexes, or just had his PC setup incorrectly….
I have a 1070GTX card and have it hooked up running G-Sync which worked flawlessly and painlessly, simply enable on the monitor then enable it in the driver window. No problems with it at all.
The only downside - I have the monitor in sRGB mode as this gives great colour reproduction (and is less hassle as I don’t have to faff with settings…) but in this colour mode you cannot change the brightness and it is set at 90% but this is too bright. I ended up using the Nvidia control panel to reduce brightness output which helped but is not an ideal solution. I’m probably going to try setting up a non sRGB mode at some stage.
Edit: By enabling the dynamic contrast setting with sRGB the picture is even better and the brightness is no longer an issue. The dynamic contrast works very well, is not noticeable unlike my old monitor where it would dim or brighten slowly and noticeably with different scenes.
+ 144Hz and 1ms is superb
+ Great design, OSD easy to navigate
+ Height and angle (vertical and horizontal) completely adjustable
- Viewing angles are decent but not as good as IPS
- Could be a little brighter, but fine otherwise
Turned refresh rate up to 144hz and running my games in Max quality, the image is stunning and flicker free. I have switch from a 24inch iiyama which was more than competent but this blows it away. I have to disagree with the quality comment, seems to be nicely made and fits together really easily, although I would not like to move my desk with the monitor on it as the stand is a little on the wobbly side. All in all for the price 5 stars
Picture is vibrant and viewing angles are better than TN screens.
Contrast is good and games look great for a 1080p screen.
No ghosting or colour banding. Ideal for gaming with a low response time.
Black's are black and it's fairly accurate colour wise. For a gaming monitor it's fantastic.
The crosshair feature I use for battlefield and it's quite useful.
The curve you don't notice after a while but makes the monitor look good imo.
Only minus point is the text. It isn't as sharp as it could be.Some fonts look a bit grainy. Problem with some va panels. It's very readable but if this was a work monitor I'd want better.
For the money im well happy.
Just to add, I tested it with the latest Nvidia drivers and it is compatible with freesync.
Seems to work fine and I've not had any issues so far.
The manufacturer thinks that this level of defect is acceptable. But I certainly don't. It's ridiculous.
Another problem with this monitor is it's absolutely terrible colour uniformity. Don't buy this monitor for graphic design, or photo editing under any circumstance! I know this is a gaming monitor, but even as a gamer, I'm trying to create a texture mod, I'm editing a white object and the white suddenly appears grey when I move to another area of the screen. So it's terrible even for that.
I have been gaming on it for about a month now and the gsync has worked flawlessly
I also have an Asus ROG Strix XG32VQ 32" curved panel as well as a Dell 30" flat and a couple of 27" screens - all of which are QHD, and I prefer this over all of them. The Asus monitor cost me £200 more than this, but pales in comparison to the AOC in day to day use. No dead pixels, backlight leakage or bright/dark spots - it's very evenly lit.
It does have a fixed stand, which is arguably a slight let down given the poorer quality 27" model has an adjustable stand, but I find the positioning perfect.
