This switch was mediocre while it was working -- it would lock up and require reboots every several weeks or so, but for the most part was OK. Then the unit failed after about 7 months (wouldn't power on). I sent it in for warranty replacement and after a month of not hearing back, I contacted ZyXEL to ask about the status. They informed me that the unit had "internal corrosion" due to an environmental cause and was therefore out of warranty, so they wouldn't replace it. (Nevermind that none of the other networking equipment or computers in the same area, which have been running for years, have had any corrosion problems!)ZyXEL is an awful company to deal with and makes awful products (I have also had numerous firmware problems with their routers and USG's that have cost me many hours of troubleshooting time, only to find they are caused by bugs in their firmware!). Look elsewhere for your networking needs.

I have had a hit-and-miss relationship with ZyXEL products over the past 10+ years, so my mind was pretty open when I decided to order their newest, cheapest 8-port gigabit ethernet switch. Fortunately, this happened to be one of those cases where the results far exceeded my expectations.This is a SOLID piece of gear, with a beefy metal enclosure, tight-fitting connections and simplistic layout that leaves the need for any type of instruction manual basically moot. Both the extermal power supply and metal enclosure run extremely cool. Although I have not tested the actual power output, its specs claim that it consumes less than half of what my older 8 port gigaswitch did. Judging by the size of the external power transformer and how cool and quiet the entire unit runs, I would tend to believe their printed specs.I have noticed no difference in throughput compared with my older gigabit ethernet switches. All 8 ports are connected to gigabit devices, with the sole exception of a fast ethernet router on one port. I typically transfer and live stream multimedia files that average around 7.0 GB in size (sometimes multiple streams across the same switch) with no problems. It currently sits next to a fairly hot-running DirecTV receiver/DVR without any problems. I've probably bought around 6-8 gigabit switches over the past few years. All of them having either 5 or 8 ports. The ZyXEL GS108B is by far the sturdiest, coolest running, reliable, lowest power-consuming switch I have bought thus far. The price I paid for it was very close to, or lower, than I paid for those older switches as well. This is definitely progress.

I keep a switch in my entertainment center and needed more bandwidth then 100FDX. This is the perfect switch because it save power when a port is not in use but screams when it is. I'm also now running at 10x the speed and twice the ports. I have my on it's side with the supplied feet at the bottom. This allow the fanless heat flow to still work but it uses up very little space.

It does as designed. It is a fanless design, which likely accounts for its temperature. A cooling fan would keep it cooler but the noise would be inappropriate for most situations where this would be installed. I have it in a rack, so a cooling fan's noise would be negligible. Overall, excellent for the price!

There is not much to say here. The switch works well. I have incorporated it into the network by my tv to get rid of the wireless connections that could not properly support HD video streams. Now I have no issues.Likes1. Small2. Lights are not super bright3. Runs cool4. Color blends with other components5. Metal casedislikes1. Wish it were smaller2. Would like lights over the connectors3. Wall wartAll in all, a solid buy. I will buy another one should the need arise.

I was not sure after reading all the mixed reviews but I took a shot because of the price.. not really much of a risk when you're buying on Amazon after all.Seems high quality... I'm getting great speeds... have yet to test large amounts of data but if anything explodes I'll update the review.For the time being this seems like a solid purchase. I'm happy and would buy this again.

I was looking for a reasonable price and I found this. I have a small 16u rack that I will use this in. I like that it is quiet and doesn't have a fan. I've used it for several weeks and have had no issues. I would buy another one.

It's a plug and play device ! Metal housing is great for shielding and looks sleek and stylish. Zyxel products seem to be on par or above other manufacturers' in the same class. After putting this in place, the uninterruptable power supply it is connected to reports that the energy consumption is lower thatn the old switch (hub) that was previously connected. It does save energy. It's way more compact too. Silver matches the color of other equipment (not that it really matters to most people). The power cord was longer than expected, allowing a better routing of the cable and less obtrusive cable clutter.

This 16 port gigabit switch has been working perfectly so far. Simple plug and play. Makes no sounds (no cooling fan) and stays cool. As long as it keeps working long-term I will be happy and will buy more in the future when needed. Good price, too.

Ok, so first, I built my own server rack. Kinda flimsy, but it got the job done. This thing went right up top and it works great! It's a gigabit ethernet switch, and it does its job. No defects, no messup's, it's good.

Never have any issues with it--just runs and runs. It is a little heaver than the plastic switch it replaced so the wires don't try to flip it every which way. Doesn't overheat even with high traffic loads. Power draw is quite low. It is about as compact as you could reasonably get. Quality product.

I bought two of these to replace some older switches. They seem to be working great. Low heat production. Attractive design. I haven't had any network issues since buying these. Great switch!I had never heard of the ZyXEL brand before buying these switches. I think it was the positive reviews on Amazon that made me give them a try. I'm glad I did.

ZyXEL has been around a long time. I expected this to be nothing but quality, I was wrong.The switch kept going off and on. The power switch is very low quality and wouldn't keep a connection.I soldered a bridge across the switch contacts so that it's always on and it works great now.

Works great out of the box. It is also a small box for 16 ports.I wired up my house for the ethernet and terminated all the ethernet wires from my house into this.I can stream all kinds of data between computers, TV, etc. etc.

Unit didn't work. Power light came on, but no link activity or connectivity on any port. Tested using known good lines. May update review if I replace this unit with another one that works.UPDATE: I have now received a replacement unit, and it works fine. I have adjusted my rating to disregard the DOA and reflect the otherwise excellent price-performance value that this switch represents. My sample size and the number of reviews to date don't justify any solid conclusions about quality control. But if you add in the reviews on another major vendor site to the ones found here at Amazon, they now reflect 2 DOA's out of 26 switches reviewed, and several of those reviews actually were for a different ZyXel switch model. While that's a small sample size, that's a higher DOA rate on the GS1100-16 than we should be seeing. Caveat emptor.

Needed to get gigabit across a room, so i gave my girlfriend's sector a 5 port gigabit, and bought this to replace a 16 port SMC fast ethernet switch.Glad i did it! SSD to SSD over the gigabit link is really fast, as it should be.The ports are really close together, so if you're wiring this up make sure you put the bottom plugs in before you fill the top ports. Unless you're rack mounting this, in which case it shouldn't matter.I've currently filled 10 ports with no issues.This unit runs silent!There's an on/off switch on the back, as well. Dunno why that's useful, but it is a consumer grade switch.All in all this was worth the price!

This did not work with my TP-Link router and I had to return it. I think it was simply a communication issue between the two different brands so I suggest that if you are setting up a home network that your router and ethernet switch are from the same manufacturer.

Bought this as an affordable replacement for a mess of old 8-port switches that needed power cycling every couple weeks. Filled up all the ports right away, and haven't had any Ethernet problems since. At this price, well worth it to not be poking around the wiring closet all the time looking for the locked-up switch.

Worked great for the first 35 days and then quit. Called Amazon for an exchange and was told I was 5 day outside the return window. They immediately transferred me to ZyXEL for support. They were not in so I'm waiting for a callback. Will update when resolved...

I thought it was strange for this switch to have 14 reviews and all 14 to rate with 5s. Price was right, so I took a chance. It came DOA (dead on arrival). I'm packing it up and sending it back. I'll go ahead and order a switch with a better recognized name brand. I'll pay more, but hopefully I'll get better quality.

I have now purchased several of these 1 GB switches. They all operate without any issues. They are very flexible in terms of application: they can be either rack mounted or simply put on a table, shelf, etc.They also do not required a separate power supply - no wall bugs!I high recommend this device if you are building up a LAN or replacing old switches in your LAN.

I own two GS108Bs that have been running for over a year. Neither has ever caused any problems with passing traffic through my network. Further, I have never had trouble with NetBIOS or any other name resolution. Both have passed Jumbo Packets as large as 9K without incident. Overall, the GS108B is an unmanaged gigabit switch which fulfills its duties for a very reasonable price.

This item is small (16-port model), quiet, and easy to use. I'm very pleased with its performance as well. Higher-end network cards will connect at full duplex for a nice bonus.If you are working on a project like me that you wanted a rack-mount switch, please take notice that this is deeper than most wall-mount racks. Therefore, I had to flush-mount this on the wall, rather than put it in the rack. Easily solvable if you buy a vertical hanging rack rather than an ordinary one. So if that's your plan, please take the depth of the unit into account.

I used this to set my home network up on gigabit with gigabit wireless N access point so I could stream from my Plex server to my Roku in HD. It worked great and setup was easy considering I am forced to use the Uverse residential gateway; essentially, leaving me with a router behind a router with a wireless access point at the end. Speeds are great wired I have gotten up to 120mbps and as low as 70mbps. The wireless network has no issues streaming local content at >4mbps speed allowing for decent 720p compared to my previous max of 2mbps. A great by for anyone needing a gigabit switch. I am also running cat6 for all my connections.

Not the fanciest looking switch, but that was definitely the point. It's small/compact size & low heat allowed me to hide this unit under my office desk and provide 1GB connectivity to all of my electronics. I would definitely recommend this product to others.

I got this for my home networking, heavy internet Hulu and Netflix video, VPN, and online gaming. No problem. No lag. The figer optic port is a bouns, but I don't have the capacity to use it. So I can't comment on that. It is a unmanaged switch, so it is very easy to set up. Also, this switch use less than 16W of power - PEAK.This machine is on for 3 weeks already, never turned off or restart. it just works.

The ZyXEL G105B switch is a very small and compactly built(5"x3"x1") Gigabit Ethernet switch. To boot, it's made from metal and therefore very durable (reminds me of the old NetGear stuff). The efficient part comes in with power consumption where it sips 3 watts max when all 5 ports are in use. This switch is even smart enough to go into power saving mode if none or only some of the interfaces are active.While streaming HD contect from Netflix, the switch remained cold to the touch which is an indicator of how much juice it uses. The metal case sort of act as a heat sink as well.All the ports are auto-sensing so no need to worry about cross-over cables.I'm using this switch with ZyXEL's PLA407 wall Plug Ethernet extenders which allow me to extend my wired network out to my entertainment center where I can connect my XBOX, BluRay, and HDDVD players into this switch. I get a nice 95 mbps connection with full duplex using this switch (speed reduction due to the nature of the PLA407 devices and not this switch by any means).
