Great quality hand recorder - for basic recording it's intuitively easy to record stuff and transfer the files on to the computer for editing. Trying to install and license the accompanying CUBASE LE6 software is painful - I've given up for now. The instructions are unclear and you need an activation code which is not present. According to the documentation "The Cubase LE 6 installation process automatically creates a Soft-eLicenser with a temporary Cubase LE 6 license." It didn't for me. According to the documentation "The Soft-eLicenser authorization is also covered in detail in the Operation Manual PDF." - not a single mention! Again, according to the documentation "An activation code can be requested free of charge within the MySteinberg area of the Steinberg website" - you cannot even get into the MySteinberg area without an activation code!!!! Zoom and Steinberg need to get together to make sure this issue is documented better and that there is support.

A great device that works excellently with nice little features like the screw thread for tripod mounts. Nice basic plastic case that keeps it safe and sound quality is excellent. However, I also own the Zoom H1 which is an amazing product at a much cheaper price. I would argue that the H1 and the H4N deliver equally excellent sound quality however, the Zoom H4N offers way more features and ports. But you might not need these features. So do your research before purchasing. I own both devices and use both of them on different types of jobs.

I had my eye on one of these solid state recorders for a while and when the Zoom H4n was announced it seemed to tick all the boxes for me
Well it does tick all the boxes and then some!
Not only a stereo recorder but a 4 track recorder as well - it also is seen by a computer as a mass storage device (ie a USB memory stick) and this makes mananging the tracks and folders a breeze
As well as all this the unit acts as a USB audio interface with your computer - amazing
Totally recommended. the best purchase I've made in a long time

I am delighted with this great recorder which worked 'straight out of the box'. I'm not a technophile, and found the controls, menus and file system easy to navigate. I use it as a music practice aid, and find the quality of the recordings quite good enough for critically reviewing my own playing (how sad is that!) when played back through the speakers of my stereo system via a simple audio cable. Using good quality headphones the sound is incredible with good stereo separation of multiple players. No doubt it would be even better with some external microphones, but at the moment I value the absolute simplicity, self-contained portability and unobtrusiveness of the H4n using internal batteries. The recorder has a nice tactile feel, and seems quite tough. The weak spot looks to be the protruding microphones, but the recorder comes with a strong protective plastic box (although the catch is ineffective). For my purposes the remote control might be a useful accessory, and I can see myself using the threaded hole on the back to mount the H4n on a standard photographic tripod from time to time.
Of course the H4n has many more features and capabilities which I am still exploring, but so far it gets five out of five.

This is one of the best recorders that Zoom offers right now. The quality of the microphones is probably one of the best in this class at this price. It can be used outdoors as well as indoors. As a pianist I can say that the recording is good for your personal rehearsals.
However there are 2 major problems with the product. The first is the insanely long startup time of over 30 seconds. This makes any kind of spontaneous recording next to impossible as the recorder takes a lot of time to boot. The second problem is with the company selling the essential tool kit as an extra 3000 Rupees bundle. It gets you an adapter, a USB cable, a noise filter and 2 more cables. To add insult to injury, the accessory kit of a "Field Recorder" DOES NOT INCLUDE A HOT SHOE MOUNT. How am I supposed to connect this thing with a camera without a hot shoe mount. If you are selling a 3K worth accessory pack, then include that.
The recorder though is great, but yes the accessory pack is a necessary but highly overpriced addition.

I got this to use for my college projects, and it has amazing functions—extremely powerful mic.
Wish the buttons produce a sound captured by the very sensitive Microphone, but is very minimal and easy to edit.

I was weighing up whether to get this or a slightly cheaper recorded. Glad I went with the Zoom. It's easy to use - at least for my purposes, I just wanted a solid, dependable sound recorder to capture meetings with clients, and to get good audio when I made videos with my Canon 650D - and I love its rugged case and hefty body casing too. Sound is crisp and clean each time. Wonderful. Incidentally, it took me awhile to work out that I had to insert the (supplied) micro card into the body of the main SD card before slotting into the recorded - initially couldn't work out why I was inserting the card and the machine wasn't reading it!

I bought this as an upgrade from the Zoom h1 and it really is a massive leap up in terms of both features and audio quality. I've been using it with two XLR short shotgun mics in a stereo pair to record gigs and with one short shotgun mic mono to record interviews and in both situations it works very well indeed. Only slight gripe would be the much shorter battery life relative to the H1, but can completely understand where the extra juice goes. Just remember to bring spares if you're going to be recording more than an hour or two...

Although designed for music recording -- it is great for interviews over the telephone, using its 4 track recording to separate the caller from the interviewer in a cell phone conversation. Split out the mic and speaker jack of the cell phone - send the speaker to the Line In (centre of the XLR input), and then use a headset mic to talk to the caller. Use the recorder's external mic to record the interviewer and ear phones out of the recorder to hear the caller while talking. You get two clean halves of the conversation recorded separately. This is very efficient to remove or spread out talk-over.

This is a great piece of kit.
I frequently use it attached to my Canon 7D along with Sennheiser radio mics and the quality is great.
Even off the onboard mic, the Zoom is still better than Canon's mics.

Amazing sound quality! I love this thing, it is my favorite new toy. The sounds that this picks up is so rich. I find myself recording mundane things (doors opening, my cat eating) and the result is fascinating and engaging to listen to. Definitely worth the money.
The interface is a little dated and clumsy. Once you figure it out it is fine and functional and you can get on with recording.
Battery life is pretty good - still on the batteries that came with it a few days ago. It also takes an adapter. I have been using both.
For Vlogging, I connect the line out to the mic input on my Lumix G85 and it works great. In that mode you don't an onboard SD card. I prefer this over synchronization later as it just adds more editing work.
You definitely want an SD card. As I mentioned, this thing makes sound recording something you will want to experiment with. Having an SD card is necessary to use it standalone to record with.
This is something that you can slip into a large coat pocket. You are not slipping it into your skinny jeans. It is pretty portable but you definitely will know you have it with you.
By the way, the sound of a cat eating is slightly icky and disturbing. Fun and fascinating though!

It took me a little bit to learn how to use this recorder, but I promise you it's worth it in the end. The quality of recording and the ease of integration into my production was excellent. The features are top shelf, and the onboard microphones are very good.
In the end, I mostly use a lavalier mic plugged into the back of this and I use this as a recorder for that style of video. It works wonderfully.
One word to the wise: Don't use low grade SD cards to record on. The bit rate of this device is high enough that your card won't keep up and it'll fail.

I bought this during the pre-Diwali sale for INR12,759 from Cloudtail, with 10% cashback on top of it for using SBI card. This made the product as cheap as the U.S. street price. Packaging date is Sep 2017, only a month old! But one catch, my unit is an import (grey market?) from Zoom North America, it came with a warranty card probably valid for North America only. Maybe factory refurbished units from US are finding their way into third world countries? The recorder, however, did seem brand new.
Now onto the product review (from field recording perspective):
Onboard mics: They are overly bright and crisp sounding, having good transient response, but sadly very much noisy, making them useful only for some amateur grade loud sfx recordings. Bass response is lacking though, recordings will sound a bit 'hollow', like they are coming through a low cut filter, even when none is applied.
Wind sensitivity: Being cardioid mics, it is there as usual; a furry like Rode deadkitten is a must outdoors, but this destroys some of the crisp highs the mics offer. Much better but impractical setup is placing the recorder in a small blimp. Downside is the time to setup and diy all this, lack of portability and lack of access to recording controls while the recorder records inside the blimp. But in some short sfx recordings with known levels, recording position and time of action (e.g. train sound effects), the trouble may be worth it. (I use my broken Cinecity blimp, cut to reduce the length, then glued at one end.This was inspired by field recordist Watson Wu, who cut a Rode blimp to make a 'Mini me blimp' which is much more portable and practical for small mics.)
Stereo Separation: Even at 90 degrees XY pattern, the recorder produces a nice stereo pattern. Although 120 degrees wide XY pattern gives better stereo separation, it can sometimes result a hole in the middle.
Preamp gain and phantom power quality: I doubt if I'll ever connect external mics to it, as I already own much better quality Sound Devices mixers. When using onboard mics, I never go above level 50 due to noise issues.
Battery life: Decent in stamina mode using Eneloops, though much worse than Sony PCM-M10.
Bootup time: 20 seconds with Sandisk 8gb class 10 SDHC card with 80MB/s speed. Might be a deal breaker for some people.
Portability: Not very portable at all, heavy, clumsy, too large for one-handed operation.
Comparison with Sony PCM-M10: I bought this to complement my other portable recorder Sony PCM-M10 (now discontinued). While Sony may sound much melodic and natural for voice and music due to its generous low and midbass, when outdoors, the omni mics pick up low frequency noise like crazy from all directions, have extremely poor stereo image, cannot handle high SPLs without brickwalling distortion, and sound very dull from distance due to rolled off highs. However, Sony offers much more clean gain than Zoom, making Sony perfect choice for quiet ambient recordings and birdcalls. Sony has smooth analog gain control knob unlike Zoom, so gain riding is possible without recording any sound of button-pressing, as in case of Zoom.
True, there are some common reliability problems with this model, like broken headphone jack, dead/jammed XLR port, rattling mic - but there are plenty of online repair videos too, as this is a very popular lineup of portable recorders. Ultimately, I feel this is a very good value for money for hobbyists, as they can't afford a Nagra-SD / Sony PCM-D100 / Olympus LS-100.
Update Q4-2019: This is still working properly (but it was not used much). However, I feel that the UI is very bad, compared to Sony's M10. There are too many buttons haphazardly laid out, and I cannot exit from menu if I hit stop button. The long bootup time and lack of a dedicated silent gain knob are annoying too.

Sound quality is very good indeed, but for vintage samplers like the MPC line or the SP 404 series and similar, it seems the gain inputs distort the XLR/Line in combo inputs A and B, without care that is. While these samplers hookup with ease between each other, I have had to noticeably reduce gain to ensure no distorted inputs which says a lot about the default power output in those vintage gears. The MTR mode is truly good, given that it works like a tape machine, not as much as a looper or sampler (no inbuilt looping mode) but excels in its intended purpose. For recording a looper just get a looper. The bounce feature and inputs monitoring work flawlessly, latency is nil and audio signal is internally routed for highest resolution. The metronome feature during recording is a necessity and its great to have it. The fact that you can monitor the built in guitar and bass fx and amps settings is a game changer as recording is seamless. You can directly record what you hear. The built in mics are great with adjustable stereo fields. In MTR mode you can monitor both inputs A and B and record both too which is like full duplex recording without a laptop overhead, the default mic input is another recording source, with an external mic input provided as well. Literally guitar, bass and vocals can be recorded in sync in this hand held unit. I am mostly using it for MTR mode and guitar/bass fx processing on the go.
The fx is certainly useable and with a little tweaking shines through, mind you, its not a multi fx chaining fx powerhouse but for a bread and butter toolkit that does the job when used well. It certainly beats adding another hardware FX processor on the go.
Stereo mode is great for regular field recording. I use a 32GB card and it starts up well in time, some 25 seconds bootup is not at all an inconvenience, and certainly not as lagging as some folks might like to imagine. If you are used to working with a lot of hardware gear, vintage samplers, drum machines and so on, the operation is highly intuitive, just focus on the menu button, scroll wheel and press down button at the right side. Play pause and record and transport are right at the face plate. Selection of inputs or recording tracks is also right at the faceplate. All this becomes muscle memory in no time.
I use it for music production, beat track drafts, music transcription, demos, field recording, multi track recording, I can imagine using it for ASMR or podcasts and film making too..The stamina mode that is enabled by a switch inside the battery compartment which must be turned on before closing the battery compartment and rebooting your unit, works as intended.
I don't find the added plastic case goofy as some might try to say, its a very well designed hard plastic case that saves added costs on procuring one, Zoom has given a lot of thought with this and it shows.
Tip, buy the USB 5V power cable for H4n Pro and connect with phone power banks for a really long lasting performace time.
Also read the manual well, its a good booklet and all features are described step by step.
Good luck to future buyers, you will be a proud owner, and at this price its truly a step.

This thing is absolutely insane. I moved up to it from a Zoom H1 and the difference is night and day. I paired it with a Rode NTG2 and this thing delivers on the audio quality and usability factor. Not sure if Amazon allows links, but if you visit vimeo(dot)com/225145337 you can see the first project I used it on and it was worth every penny. Built tough, and packed with more features than I yet know how to use, but growing into something isn't a bad thing. Battery life looks to be quite good and the menu is straightforward to navigate (some minor memorizing required).

The sound quality is good. At such a price it’s a complete package. I use it for voiceovers when on the move outside my studio. And in the studio as a preamp. It’s portable so even in the studio u can work with batteries or with the help of a usb( 5V 1 Amp 4.0 mm into 1.7mm jack) n power bank. Thus, eliminating the fan noise of your laptop.

Great portability and high quality. Can almost be used as a standalone DAW with the multitrack facility.
I have also used with external microphones and so far no issues.
The learning curve may be a bit steep for people new to this kind of devices, but the accompanying manual and lots of videos on YouTube should make it easier to use this to its full potential.
Would have been nice if there was builtin charger - the batteries run out quite fast depending on the usage and mode, and this can irritatingly hamper recording sessions. The branded external power supply (to be purchased separately) is very expensive for what it is, but I have been using (a much cheaper) other brand power cable and a power bank. No issues so far.

I am a music creator under the artist Little Symphony which can be found on Spotify, Apple Music etc. Myself and team members have been using the Zoom H4N for both field recording as well as some instruments. The Zoom H4N Pro is a quality unit with a relatively low internal mic noise level which allows for crisp stereo recordings that really sound as if you are right there in the same place as the recording took place.

You may be able to achieve a slightly higher quality with more high end mics, but for the purposes of almost everybody I'm sure this mic would be sufficient. Don't have a bad thing to say about it and would recommend it.

This recorder works great on its own but works even better with a condenser mic. It has built-in 48v phantom power and can record multiple tracks at the same time or separately. Always reassuring working with it, you just know the sound quality and volume is gonna be good and details all captured. The pickup distance is so far that I sometimes wish it could be little less sensitive LOL. I can just mount it up on my 80D and run around with it on and just capture every detail I need for my videos. Unbelievable product! Definitely gonna spend more time digging through all the advanced functions, so curious about it.

TL;DR: better sound than anything of about the same size, excellent low noise floor, responsive built-in mics. Menu a bit clunky (as are all Zoom products), no separate line in jack. Surfing levels and changing multiple inputs is a PITA.
I make short documentary films. I like the Zoom H4n Pro because it works well and is easily trousered. As a bonus, it sort of looks like a radio so it attracts less attention from baksheesh-searching
customs officials and border police.
I have used the Tascam Dr60D mkii and while it is a good recorder the quality is not as smooth as the H4n IMHO and the form factor is far less portable. I do use it for field recording though.
I use the H4n primarily with a RODE NTG2 and a RODE lav. I also use a few Sanken and Shures for VO.
I like that you can use it as an audio input device. This is handier than you might think especially if you narrate.
I wish it came with a y-connector so you could monitor line mics. This is a worthy add-on. I have also purchased the accessory kit with wind fur etc. and of course that can be handy if using the built-in mics.
I own the H2n and briefly owned the H1n (new version). This device has a sound quality in an entirely different league.
I will be taking it to sub-Saharan Africa next so I’ll see how well it stands up to inclement conditions.
In all, I think this is a highly worthwhile recorder, especially at the low price point. If you want slightly better pre-amps and better noise floor you can go to the H6, but this is easy and cheap and (so far) it just works.

still evaluating but sound quality seems ok, not as easy to use as my old Sony PCM -10. takes long time to boot and create and erase files. no internal memory and the 4 track and MTR modes not really useful to me ditto all the fx and S/p too many bells and whistles when all I really need is good two track stereo recording quick and easy, price point is right but I wonder will it hold up with years of use My old Sony lasted almost ten years before switches and buttons finally kicked. Battery life absolutely sucks and had to buy AC adaptor separately with accessory kit which was way overpriced. Hope I get to know and like this recorder eventually need something reliable and easy to use, also not great to use as an mp3 file player. I would buy Sony again if I could afford it tho' .

All good things have been said about this product. And I do not counter most of them. It is well built and sound quality is decent.
However it failed me on two major accounts -
1. Its start up time is well over 10 seconds. I am using a new and decent SD card which my older recorder loads within 2 seconds. For a field recorder where I would like to capture a quick bird chirping or a sheep bleating etc. this just made me miss lot of opportunities on my trip. I always had it handy but to save battery I could not keep it on constantly on my 25 km hike through the forest area.
2. Even though the feel of hold is rubbery it still has handling noise prominently. Even a slight movement of the hand and you can hear rubbing sounds recorded. Recording level button makes huge sounds too and lets accept it that more often than not there are volume changes and you need to readjust recording level DURING recording. That transition will be embedded in the audio as TAKTAKTAK... the sound of pushing the buttons. For 20,000 INR this is unacceptable.
It is good as a portable recorder for a concert or a shoot where you can just keep it at a place and know exactly when the recording is beginning. It is NOT a handheld field recorder for someone out on adventure or capturing ambient sounds for projects. Just out of the return window I am stuck with it. OLX?

I"m a professional photographer, and I also do video for select clients. This is my go-to recorder. Paired with a wireless mic, this works like a charm. The menus take a little getting used to, but compared to Tascam products, it's much more user-friendly.
The microphones on the recorder are also pretty good if you're within a couple of feet of it. If you deal with audio-only interviews, this one's a no-brainer.

This item is fantastic. Pairs well with external mics I already have. I did find that the formatting of the memory card was a bit slow but other than that its a solid recording device and the built in mics pick up some awesome audio. Using a 32gb card and getting around 50 hours of recording time! As someone previously mentioned - the item only comes with itself, two batteries a manual and the case. No AC adaptor, no usb cord, no memory card. But the seller has done a fine job with telling us what it comes with and what it does not come with. I use this for documentary film making, corporate video, podcasts and web video and other video productions. Great item!

Great mic and sound quality is awesome! I don't have a DSLR so I need an external mic when recording outside. If you want to check out the sound quality outdoors, check out my YouTube channel: ohhello20s. The recent videos use this mic outdoors and you can also compare it to our first video which uses the on-camera mic. :)

As a content creator o found this one is absolutely Value for money, makes your videos sounds pro, even with difficult atmosphere it gives decent sound,interms of noise reduction it gives more than its pricing, tough there are high priced marvels available...h4n pro stands out with handy and professional outcome within its price range... great product to buy. They could have included a power supply with instrument,it's battery drains heavily cant complain coz it demands more power, but kool with power bank and getting a connector cable was a painstaking one for me. Happy so far

Klasse Gerät mit wirklich hochwertigen Ergebnissen. Eine "große" SD-Karte verursacht zwar beim Anschalten des Geräts eine recht lange Ladezeit, was mich aber nicht weiter stört.
Mittels XLR (alternativ Klinke) habe ich den Player ans Mischpult angeschlossen und darüber Gesangsmikro und CD-Einspieler auf verschiedenen Spuren aufnehmen können. Durch die eingebauten Mikros oben am Gerät konnte ich auf einer weiteren Spur den Raum abnehmen (Applaus usw.). Dazu habe ich den Player auf einem Mikro-Stativ befestigt (Schraub-Halterung dafür befindet sich im Lieferumfang).
Außerdem kommt der Player mit einer Cubase-LE-Version. Nach der Aufnahme habe ich die SD-Karte einfach in den PC gesteckt und konnte mit der Cubase-Software die einzelnen Spuren separat bearbeiten. Obwohl ich technisch ein totaler Laie bin, klappte das schon nach kurzem "warm werden" wirklich gut. Fazit: Der Zoom-Player eignet sich auch für Leute, die keine große Fachkenntnis besitzen.
Sehr praktisch ist auch das mitgelieferte Case aus Hartplastik, in dem der Player sicher transportiert werden kann.

Nirgendwo in der Produktbeschreibuzng war angegeben, dass das Gerät ohne Speicherkarte kommt. Da ich mit einem baugleichen Gerät gearbeitet habe, nahm ich es nun mit auf Reportage - und stand nach dem Einschalten da ohne Karte !!!

Las diversas opciones y posibilidades que ofrece esta grabadora asegura una buena inversión y no quedarme limitado. La he probado conectándola a un micrófono lavalier Rode, a un micrófono Philips y directamente a una videocámara. Una vez haces varias pruebas y ajustas la configuración (volumen de grabación, volumen de salida de audio, filtros y otros, es más sencillo de lo que parece), la calidad es muy buena. Además, en Internet hay numerosos tutoriales en vídeo que ayudan con ciertas dudas. Muy recomendable.
