Also, the close focus is VERY close. I have learned that with a lens this wide, it's all about getting close, so nice that Zeiss understood that in the design.
So why only 4 stars? Three issues, though together they're only 1 star compared to the fantastic image quality.
1, the plastic lens hood, while a highly functional shape, is very large and feels cheap. I have a fuji x-e1 with the 18-55 zoom, and that lens hood is also plastic, but it snaps on very solidly with a satisfying *thunk* at the end. The Zeiss hollowly snaps in place, and once in place it has quite a bit of play. It feels out of place next to the extremely solid lens body on the Touit. It's also, due to the odd funnel shape of the lens, very cumbersome to put in the bag when mounted forward or reversed. I deal with it because i <3 the image quality, but I wish they'd somehow eliminated the funnel shape since that's a main part of why the hood is so gigantic. The Fuji 14 is only 2mm narrower (yeah, I know, 2mm at the wide end is a lot, but still) and doesn't have such a weird flare at the end of the lens barrel.
2. The focus ring. It feels really, really nice. Too nice. It turns so smoothly that it's quite easy to bump it. This causes two issues on NEX: first, if you have focus assist activated, touching the ring AT ALL activates magnified live view. Sony needs to change how this works, but that'll never happen. In the meantime, I'm stuck half-pressing the shutter release constantly to jump back to full framing. Second, if focus assist is off, it's very easy to move focus and not realize it.
3. Auto focus: the AF is actually reasonably quick and VERY accurate, which is great. But, it doesn't yet utilize the phase detect AF function on the NEX-6, which means that every time you focus, it runs the lens from closest to farthest, then snaps back to the sharpest point. That also means that, due to the NEX's odd way of continuously updating focus when not in MF mode, you walk around with this thing constantly running the full focus travel when you're not even doing anything. Because the lens motor is somewhat loud, and seems to be moving a fair amount of weight, this constant hunting is both audible and can be felt on the very light body.
Overall, these issues can be dealt with. I compare this to the 10-18 in a local shop, and the 10-18 focuses WAY faster, but has some gross chromatic issues near the edges of the image, even with the software correction. I think that with a wide angle lens, chromatic performance is almost the most important. I hate purple branches in my images. Overall, this lens is very, very nice. I think $1,250 is a bit much compared to others, like the Fuji 14 (which I don't own), but the Zeiss is wider. If you can pick up a Touit 12mm used or at a deal price (Sorry, Amazon, I got mine on eBay) it's a really wonderful imaging device.

Recently I've purchased the Zeiss 12mm and 32mm Touit lenses for my Sony A6000. It brought me back to the days where I really had to think about framing my shots, and getting much closer to my subjects than the "easy" shots taken with a powerful zoom. Granted for sports, wildlife, and discreet photography at a distance, a telephoto lens is going to fit the bill better.
However, for people and architecture photography wide angle lenses to normal view lenses are going for you to get you up close and personal. I have come to enjoy engaging my people subjects and can see how satisfying street photography can be.
The 12mm and 32 (which deserves a review of its own) were great for street photography due to their great depth of field and inclusive field of vision. I will say that I missed some shots due to a bit of focus hunting, and of course these lenses do not have optical stabilization. But if you strategize and compensate a bit on the focus options on your camera the image quality is incredible,
I took the Zeiss 12mm and the 32mm to St. Louis and had a great time taking people, building, and statue photos. The famous Arch by the river never looked better through the 12mm, and the 32 worked great for interior shots for people. Admittedly I also used a 16-70mm Zeiss for some variety, but the 12mm and 32mm Zeiss Touit were my favorite lenses in downtown St. Louis.
The Zeiss magic was apparent in all of my shots. Converting some of the color to B&W on my iPad worked brought me back to the film darkroom I worked my way through college. Color photos also showed great sharpness and the famous Zeiss "pop" was very evident.
I'll be looking for more Zeiss primes as they come available. The 12mm may seem a little extreme wide angle even with the crop factor, but I'm looking forward to exploring the capabilities of this lens' full potential.
Yes the 12mm and 32mm lenses are expensive options compared to Sony and Sigma lenses. But the quality of the images from the Zeiss lenses speak for themselves I plan to keep them for a long time.
I've seen some sales on them, and they have certainly come down in price form their introductory pricing.
