Баса нет, вдалике есть намек, но очень глухо, спасет только сабвуфер...
I paid visit to a few showrooms here in Dubai to know what's in store locally. I came across Polk Audio and Yamaha 5.1 speaker packages. I chose Yamaha over Polk Audio because there were great reviews on the speakers I mentioned above. Another reason was to save some money.
I bought my speaker wires, RCA subwoofer and HDMI cables from Amazon just to make sure I am buying items that people have bought and appreciated. I wanted to avoid overspending and at the same time make a very nice sounding system.
I knew this is a decent combination of speakers and receiver. The only thing I had to worry about next was to calibrate them right. I did struggle for couple weeks to calibrate the speakers. Initially, I did a manual calibration but I felt unsatisfied. I then ran the YPAO calibration but still felt the speakers should deliver more.
I downloaded DTS and Dolby Digital Demo discs from internet and tried playing them. Ultimately I discovered that my Blu Ray player was decoding the audio and delivering signal to my receiver in PCM format. This was the real problem. I changed digital audio output format of my Blu Ray player to "bitstream unprocessed" and instantly noticed the receiver was receiving DTS and Dolby signal. The high quality surround audio then came to life!
I have my subwoofer's High-Cut switch set to "low". The front, surround and center channels are set to "small" and subwoofer phase is set to normal and the volume is set to half. The crossover frequency in the receiver is set at 80Hz. I did try 60Hz too but no noticeable difference.
I got hold of a few DTS 5.1 and 7.1 channel lossless demos. I had a big smile on my face when I played those demos. I live in an apartment and must keep the volume low to avoid annoying the neighbors. The sub delivers clean deep bass. Once the speakers break-in nicely, they will sound much better. So far I have played downloaded content on my receiver and am yet to play Blu Ray DTS-HD MA discs. I am happy already!!

I came back from work the following day and there was the movie `Safe' showing on cable. I turned on the system and wow, I was completely blown away and this is without the surround speakers. I could hear every tiny sound from the movie. With the bass on the sub turned on the vibration in the room was awesome. The next day as I was trying to create space for the surround speakers, my Mrs protested. She complained that she can't see the need for another speaker with the kind of sound these things were pumping out. I still have the surround speakers in the box, I will find a way. But the way I see it, it seems just the tall boys and the sub would have done the job without the center and surround speakers.
They don't only sound nice, they look so beautiful; mind you these are quite big and really can blend with the home décor especially with the glossy finish. Take off the front covers and you are greeted with very nice looking cones. Yamaha has done a good job of providing very solid stands with pads that seem to glue to the floor once they are set down, which eliminates the risk of tipping over these tall boys. I may not be an expert in these matters but these are incredible speakers and I am very happy for the purchase.

As some others have said, they are a little bit weak on the low end of the frequency range, but that should not be a surprise, as the speaker specs clearly state that they are rated for a frequency range of 30 Hz to 35,000 Hz. The "normal" human hearing range is 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, so these don't reproduce those very low frequencies, between 20-30 Hz. Based on that, I think these speakers are intended to be paired with a good subwoofer. That is what I've done, and the total package works incredibly well. Some listeners will be happy with the sound provided by just these speakers, as there is decent bass response, but if you like very deep, pronounced bass, then add a sub for those lower ranges.
Matching these with a good subwoofer (one with separate frequency/cutover adjustment and output/volume adjustment), and a receiver/amplifier that is capable of driving this setup, will give you an impressive sounding system. For a total speaker investment of around $1000, you will have the equivalent of much higher priced speakers.
I highly recommend these NS-777 speakers.

So hows the sound? Before I begin, let me just mention that I am using these for 2 channel music only. IMHO, the proper way to do a sound test is to connect your tower spkrs. to an integrated stereo amplifier. Remember, you cannot connect a sub to an integrated amp. So the integrated amp has to feed enough bass to your spkrs. and will also give you a clear idea of the bass handling capacity of your towers. On the other hand, any stereo receiver which has a dedicated subwoofer out, probably will not push as much bass to your towers as you would like. So if you are using a stereo receiver with a sub out and if you are not satisfied with the bass response of your towers (without the sub attachd.), I dont think its fair to pin the blame on the manufacturer of your towers.
I am using the Yamaha R-S700 stereo receiver (100W/channel nominal) which has a dedicated sub out. This is a high-end receiver.....you might not agree with the "high-end" connotation but with all due respect, let me just point out that there are very few receivers in the market with a THD rating as low as this receiver. Now, I took my own sweet time to decide on the sub, so I have been listening to music without a sub for a while. I did not find the bass response to be deep and rich. The bass just did not have enough sustain in it, if you know what I mean. It was rather too tight for my liking. Here let me point out that my idea of "deep rich bass" is quite different from "chest thumping bass", a term which other reviewers have used in other reviews. I was not shopping for anything like that. But then again, as I have mentioned before, maybe my receiver is not feeding enough bass to my 777s. But anyways, the point is, after reading the reviews, I was under the impression that I would not need a sub. Turned out, that was not the case. For something as big as this I expected a little more on the bass end. However, let me just point out another issue. The woofers are made of PMD which many manufacturers use these days. The 777 has a bass port at the back. I have taken a peek through that port and was surprised to see that the PMD material is not opaque....sunlight actually passes through it!!!! So the question is: How much bass can a woofer handle if it is made of such a material which is almost transparent?? Maybe this is not an issue and maybe the PMD material looks thin but is actually quite durable. I dont know......lot of maybes......These are specifically designed for HT. When you are watching a movie, rarely anything below 80/90 hertz will come out from your front left and right. So I guess this kind of PMD material is ok for movies but for music you definitely need a sub to augment the bass output. Just my opinion.
So I started shopping for a sub and ended up with the JBL ES250P (check out that review). If you add a sub, then its a whole different ball game. You dont need to care much about the bass response of your towers, because your sub will do most of the work anyways. The 777s are capable of handling 250Ws peak and my receiver is 100W nominal. I was concerned that my receiver will be no match for these towers and I will have to buy another additional amp (the NAD C275BEE is what I had in mind).....the Yamaha R-S700 has a pre-amp out loop. But after I added the sub I am quite satisfied with the sound and my receiver does not sound underpowered. I was thinking of returning these and purchasing the JBL L890. But those are beyond my means at this time. Besides, like I said, unless I use an integreted amp, I dont think the bass will be any different. So I figured why spend tons of money just to boost your bass response when all you need is a good sub. Finally, if my sub is doing most of the work with the bass, my towers better look cool if not anything else and they really are! Other than the bass issue the sound is crisp and clear.
Overall, a great looking speaker at a very reasonable price but the bass I'm afraid is not deep and rich by any means. I would still recommend this baby but you most definitely will need a high quality sub to augment the bass response. Unfortunately I cannot give anything more than a 4 star. Again, these are not bad spkrs, definitely better than many in the market. Overall sound is crisp and clear. Great for movies with an average sub. But for music you will have to spend some money on a quality sub.

I had bought a HTiB 3-4 years ago, and the original speakers slowly died one by one. Everytime my wife would have a party, she would crank it up and kill another one. Now, setting the system more than 25% volume is too much. Not only do they put out tons of sound, but it's crisp and clear.
Money well spent.

I know this is not Yamaha's top of the line speakers (I am very familiar with the Yammie line and the sound produced at the various higher price points, and no, I don't work for Yamaha, and yes, I've had other brands of AV units and Speakers in my set-up). But at a $248 price point, wow, what an amazing speaker. Here are my thoughts on the actual performance of this speaker:
Please note, my particular set-up is in a room that would be considered small to medium size . . .
The mid-tones are crystal clear. So clear in fact, that I have nothing more to say on this; the mid-tones are exceptionally.
The highs (such as cymbals on a drum set) were SLIGHTLY strong, but after running an auto set-up for the speaker tone and volume adjustment (built into many current Yamaha receivers), the cymbals were much more in line with what is expected in the high tweeters (a natural blend of sound). The end result is that the cymbals are NO longer slightly strong, but properly balanced. I have read other reviews on this product and some people have complained about the same tweeter concern. But I was able to eliminate this issue by simply balancing the tone and volume in the speaker set-up function of my AV unit. An easy thing to do if you own a receiver that has the auto speaker set-up function. And many different brands of quality receivers have this ability! And if you don't, you have ears don't you? Open up the tone and volume setting on your av unit and adjust them. Simple, done. Nough said. The tweeters on this speaker sound great.
The low (bass) end. I had a similar experience on the low end as I did on the high end. The bass was a little weak. But after running the auto speaker set-up, the lows balanced out and now my complete sound, low, mid, and high's, all harmonized nicely. Granted, the bass end on this speaker is not going to thump you into the next room, I'll agree to that. But if you're the type of person who does like to be thumped into the next room, you probably have a subwoofer (or several subwoofers) to accommodate you. And if you don't, you should. But just as an FYI, even if you don't want to be thumped into another room, you should have a subwoofer anyway; subwoofers are not an "extra" thing to get later, they are a necessity, in any sound set-up, and I don't care how much you spend on your other speakers, regardless of the brand.
For those of you who are still skeptical about this speakers tweeter and bass abilities . . . the NS-777 is also bi-amp ready (for those of you that don't know what it means to bi-amp, look it up in your AV manuel)!
At first I used this speaker without biamping. And after tweaking the speakers as described above, they produced very nice sound. However, I then decided to try and see what the difference would be if I used the bi-amp feature. After bi-amping these speakers produced wonderful sound; a very clear natural sound with a reasonable tonal balance between the high and low (tweeter and bass sounds).
If you don't know if your AV unit can support biamping, look in your receiver's manuel to see if it does. But whether you use these speakers with or without bi-amping, the sound it produces is wonderful . . . especially for the price!
Bottom line, at a price tag of anywhere between $250-300 (currently we are in the spring 2011 time period), the Yamaha NS-777 are an exceptional value with fantastic sound. You won't be disappointed. Me thinks anyway . . . but this is all my opinion, right? Let your own ears decide.
Enjoy, whatever you purchase.

These speakers are heavy. I could barely carry them upstairs.
Sound quality is coarse and unbalanced out of box. After 20 minutes of breaking in, the sound got a bit better. I was disappointed and thought about returning them, but decided to give them a chance. I have been using them for a few hours each day in the past 4 days, and everyday the sound gets better. So far I've used them for about 15 hours and the sound is already quite good.
The bass is incredible. They shake the floor without the subwoofer. When playing dialogs, the sound is still bit forward and sharp, but in a pleasant way.
I tried bi-wiring and it did make a difference - the mids sound slightly more smooth and rounded.

Anyway, the story starts out I bought these speakers because they looked really nice. I did look online and checked the reviews.
I am a musician, who enjoys composing, and listening to a huge variety of styles.
Opera, Classical, Rap, Trance, Rock, New Age, are the styles I thoroughly enjoy. Of course my liste continues, etc...
I must say, I was kind of dissapointed with the way they sounded the first time I turned them on. However further on, realized that my amp had a limit set to -10dB, which means I had to turn up a whole lot of volume just to hear something.
These get very loud, they reached up to -25dB for me, without distortion.
There is plenty of bass in these speakers, whoever say's there isn't, obviously prefers having low frequencies hitting his chest, and moving furniture from the deep vibration. Because of the Bass Reflex port designed in the back, these speakers are very capable to produce a pleasant kick and bass to a regular listener.
You can put them against the wall without a worry, because the floor speaker feet that come with the package, create a safe distance between the port and the wall, letting a smooth airflow without too much deep frequnecy disturbance.
I sat in my room, testing these with everything I can possibly think of.
Here are my thoughts:
New Age: I listened to all the songs by " Enya ", and must say, the sound was very pleasant and full from the speakers. Nothing sounded compressed, and every frequency sounded clarified, without being on whole mush.
" Yanni ", was my next test that I decided to try out. This is where they showed their negative side. The piano had a good amount of midrange, but unfortunately the mid speaker started distorting because of that. " NOTE " I did try to test them at a same volume level that I could possibly guess with my ear.
Trance: I tried a lot of trance music, and it pulled out most of it. With tight dry or juicy kicks, the speakers handled very well.
Opera: I was completely impressed with what this speaker had shown while playing opera. Turning on " Andrea Bocelli " I did crank up them loud, but the speakers were able to handle the tenor vocals very easily. Loved it!!
Rock: Who knows... I really did like the way rock music was produced on these Yamahas. People complain saying: "these speakers aren't meant for rock music".
I SAY OTHERWISE!!! They pull it out very well... Of course if you need really really hard kicks from the drums, then buy an additional sub. I tested " Paramore " and must say, they sounded great!!
Rap: ummm... not a big fan, though I did test a few songs, and they seemed to play without distortion.
Conclusion
Would I recommend these speakers? YES!!! Definitely Would!!!
Would it be nice to see NS-888 with dual 10" per tower? OH YEH!!!!
My opinion. It feels like they have a lot more potential, but something is just holding them back. The only thing I wish, was for the speaker material to be made out of " C.M.M.D " material that Infinity Audio uses.
But all in all... Great speakers!!!

taken care of in a very timely manner. It used to be BOSE and Pinnacle sounds but I have to say Yamaha has made some big breakthroughs with this set of speakers.

I used polyfill behind the 8 inch drivers and mids to clear out a little boominess I noticed with the bass response (yes, the speakers have a port but it is separated from the drivers by a foam rubber barrier, so the polyfill stays in place). Lows and mids tightened up nicely. Highs are very crisp and precise, but not overly bright.
Only con is they are BIG. Almost 4 ft high, but they look cool.
BUY 'EM! You won't regret it.

Anyone claiming they do not have enough bass is most likely using an underpowered receiver, because with my Yamaha RX-V1 these things put out nice, detailed bass. The soundfield is fairly wide with the speakers placed 8 feet apart and individual insterments are separated well. With an an RX-V659 (100w per channel) they were a bit lacking for music depth, but still great for movies. Of course for watching home theater you're still going to need a sub if you want your whole house to rumble, but that is true with almost any speaker in the consumer market that doesn't have a built in powered sub.
The finish is beautiful, although hard to keep clean since I live in the desert.
Overall this is probably the best budget speaker on the market, and will outperform many speakers at three times the asking price in detail and clairity as long as you have a receiver capable of putting out enough power to run them properly.
