I was originally driving them with a Yamaha RX-V867 (high end consumer grade AV amp). When I just changed the speaker wires over, I was not impressed (muddy highs..). Then I re-ran the YPAO process to adjust the internal equalizer to them. Much better... And per some previous comments, I did about 40 hours of 'break-in' and they rewarded me nicely.
Placement is important for bass response since they are rear ported. Mine are about 18" out from the wall at the back, which seems to be where the bass sounds the best. In fact, I've turned off my sub-woofer for most listening, and haven't missed it.
Then I hooked them up to a new Yamaha analog stereo amp (RS-700), and they took off. Yes, it's near the same power (95W vs. 100W), but they sound totally different: Much more 'open', much better sound stage, and absolutely clear. Vocals are outstanding, and if I close my eyes, I'm sure there's a piano in front of me sometimes. I have been enjoying listing to Larry Carlton guitar background fills on Steely Dan tracks, and hearing an 'ambiance' that I've never heard before on well recorded CDs (Norah Jones, Diana Krall...).
A clean source is essential with this combo... I use a Marantz CD5004 for CDs, and I'm considering an Oppo for SACD. And I might even get my old Dual turntable tuned up and give it a 'whirl'.
Price seems to have gone up since 2005, but the speakers are still a great deal. Remember that these are 6 ohm speakers, so make sure your amp is compatible.
After hooking these up to my 20 something years old Technics SA-160 receiver, the sound was so good it inspired me to look up specs... lots of specs. I knew I was getting a good deal based on Amazon reviews before I bought them. After weeks of listening and web research, I can confidently say the guy I got them from didn't know their value or was sick of moving his stuff, and their audio quality is worth much more than they're sold for new. They are made with high quality materials, including Monster cables on the inside. Bass is deep and accurate, mids are full, and highs are crisp. These speakers bring out sounds that I can't even hear on my Sony speakers, such as light high-hat tapping of drum sets in certain songs.
If you're not buried in College or Credit card debt, buy these!
Things to consider before buying them:
match the ohm rating on your receiver with these speakers. These speakers are rated at 6 ohms, and a lot of receivers are rated at 8 ohms. This rating has nothing to do with performance, but it's relatively important to match, especially if you're listing at loud levels for long periods of time.
Yamaha has what I call a "flat" sound. Clarity and authenticity of each note seems to be the goal with Yamaha. Lots of other speaker systems embellish the bass, largely because many music lovers enjoy a stronger bass register in their music. I notice this each time I get into a shared vehicle at work. The tonal adjustments are invariably set to heavy bass before I set them back to neutral or slight treble increase. I dare say it you get these speakers, you won't be blown away at first. The speakers simply reproduce what was recorded and no more. However, if you love unmolested sound from your speakers, you'll love the Yamaha NS-555. BTW, I no longer use my sub-woofer with these speakers.
My previous system consisted of a pair of Dynaudio Contour 1.3 SE monitors ($3500.00), a Krell KAV-300r receiver ($3500.00), and an Arcam CD 37 CD player. That system was absolutely phenomenal, but it was supposed to be, that was expected. I decided to downgrade and pocket some cash to help finance my master's degree and sold the whole system off. After some serious research I bought a used Yamaha AX-592 2 ch. integrated amplifier for $75.00 (mint), a Yamaha DVD-S2700 (list $1000.00) for $180.00 off ebay, and the Yamaha NS-555 tower speakers. I was expecting disappointment, instead I received a pleasant surprise! This inexpensive system is fantastic sounding! This system proves the axiom of diminishing returns...You would have to spend $3000.00+ to equal this current system. The sound as a whole is very clean with taut deep bass and clean, clear mids and highs. My audiophile friends cannot believe the sound quality/price ratio! At the price of the NS-555s I expected nasally voices, harsh highs, and sloppy, bloated bass. Instead I found beautiful clean voicing, smooth treble and fantastic bass pitch and definition! The NS-555s are not comparable to my former Dynaudios but they were never meant to be. Yet, they compare very favorably to speakers costing 2 to 3 times as much.
The NS-555s are only moderately efficient at 89dB 1w/m so they require a relatively powerful/high current amplifier to extract their potential. They have a nominal impedance of 6 ohms and considering that loudspeakers generally vary to between 2 ohms to 16 ohms impedance, a stable, strong amp is highly recommended! My Yamaha AX-592 outputs 140 wpc into 8 ohms, 220 wpc into 4 ohms and nearly 480 wpc into 2 ohms. You would need one monster home theater receiver to approach these numbers and none that I know of can truly do it with 5 or more channels driven. I will say it again give them power and they will sing!
The very fine build quality of the NS-555s belies their price. The cabinetry is solid but not over-the-top. The cabinet is lined with padding, the crossover is very well put together with quality parts, the drivers are of nice quality and the finish is very nice, they look rather expensive. I have received numerous compliments on their beauty.
I most highly recommend the Yamaha NS-555 speakers to any aspiring audiophile. These speakers are great for music and movies and I cannot imagine a better bang for-the-buck! They have excelled at all generes of music from Miles Davis to Metallica. Yamaha has found a way to bring high-end sound to the masses, all of my equipment is very well put together, looks very good and sounds fantastic!
Excuse me, I am going to sit down and listen to some music on these fine speakers!!!
Having said that, these speakers are excellent for the price. I wouldn't consider any other floorstanding speakers until the +$800 range.
Second, they weight 44 pounds a piece! Quality really does scale with weight.
It's interesting that the NS-555 is equipped with the same cone sizes as Yamaha's highest end $2000 Soavo models. One 1", one 5", and two 6.5". It must be ideal.
The 30Hz - 35kHz is best in class.
Without surprise, they hands down beat my Bose car system.
If you want ridiculous bass, you obviously need a powered sub. But you certainly don't need one, especially if you simply add 3dB to your receiver's low-end via the equalizer or "bass" adjust. With the right content, satisfying bass will fill a large room.
TV audio is extremely tame and balanced. The full frequency range is there.
These speakers allow you to enjoy a truly home theater experience; the mids and highs sound great and the bass is very good. These speakers sound so good that sometimes I prefer to listen to music or concerts just with these two front speakers instead of the 5.1 setup.
I took advantage of the bi-wiring capabilities, which I would advise to do it to take full advantage of these speakers.
Please consider that these are big speakers for people who really want to enjoy a HOME THEATER experience. I would definitely buy them again!
For the price, there are better more accurate speakers you can get... but these are good speakers that will probably keep you happy until you're ready for a better sound stage...
Hooking them up and playing them the initial sound was a bit too stiff in a seemingly precise but harsh way HOWEVER after about 90 minutes of play time there was a more than a subtle change in the sound quality as they smoothed out tremendously yet still very natural, precise sounding.
Some people do not believe that speakers are capable of "breaking in" but to my ears this was a substantial change. They sound very good now and there are those that say it takes about 100 hours of playing for speakers to completely break in. I feel there is no doubt there will be some improvement in the coming weeks, althought I doubt as dramatic as that at about 90 minutes in.
A small number of some reviewers report that the NS-555's do not have enough bass capabilities. i on the other hand can report that I am more than pleasantly surprise at the bass response I am getting from them and I am using a single lead hook up. Yamaha's design allows for bi-wire hook ups on the NS-555's, using seperate leads for the midrange and tweeter then a lead specifically for the woofers, it maybe possible to then increase the bass response to a higher level. I am willing to try the bi-wire set up and have some good spade connectors on their way for that purpose. The NS-555's can take banana plug ins also which is quick and easy.
Currently I am using the OPPO DV-983H DVD player also as the CD player and it really compliments the system well. The picture is excellent thru the RXV663 and the sound from both DVD's, CD's, SACD's and a variety of DVD audio titles have all been great. CD listening seeems to be the most clear and natural when using the RXV663 two settings that are close in sound "Straight" and also a "Pure Direct" that really allow the speakers to shine with the content of a good sounding CD. Some CD's where the recording is from really old sources like poor tapes and 78's can benefit from some of the sound scenes the amp can produce.
MSRP for these are $249.95 for a single so $500 for the pair. Careful searches can find some really good bargins on these so look carefully.
Fit and finish seems top notch and the sound rivals some speaker systems I have heard that are at a much higher price point. So far in the sound quality for dollar aspect these are hitting a home run in my book.
Update: Dec 2011, These speakers are still providing great service and sound a pair of smooth broken-in speakers. No complaint.
Short term follow up for anyone interested. Had them for a little over 3 months now and they do indeed "get better with age." The soundstage has "widened" but still retains mid/treble focus and the bass has smoothed out nicely. Turned the subwoofer way down. Not sure what's up-breaking in maybe?-but they're sounding better and better.
And the looks? They are polished black and simply ooze class. The speakers don't take up much space either width-wise or depth-wise. In fact, they're smaller than the speakers I replaced, though a bit taller. The height is just right for sitting in a chair and listening, so you don't have to worry about that either. Finally, some assembly is required -- you have to screw in the feet (four per speaker), and they go in fairly deep.
In short, immersive.
