In the past I had a Onkyo, Denon, and they were supposed the top of the line, but no comparison.

Frankly I did not expect the CD-S1000 to render much acoustic improvement over my old CDX-1100 when playing ordinary CDs, though I had read that some improvement might be discernable. Since I had no SACDs at the time, as a test of my new CD-S1000, I used a CD I was particularly familiar with, having played it dozens and dozens of times over the years. That was a good choice - because the improvement is sound I noted was nothing short of stunning. The dynamic range was clearly greater than what I had become accustomed to and passages which I had grown to accept as being slightly distorted (attributable I had thought to the CD recording itself) sounded gratifyingly clean and clear. Instead of having over-spent on an unnecessarily expensive CD player I had made a wise investment in musical satisfaction for many years to come.
All that having been said there were are a few disappointments. There is no headphone jack on the unit and no independent volume control - so you have to fire up the AV receiver or pre-amp at the very least to use your earphones. All the controls offered are of the minimalist philosophy, inclusive of those on the remote control unit itself. The digital displays on the CD player tell you as little as possible: for example, insert a CD and hit play and the digital display shows, "1" for track # 1 playing - nothing else other than seconds of elapsed play time. There is no indication of how many tracks remain on the disc - that's much more important. Depressing the display button again gets you even less interesting information: how many minutes have elapsed since start of play. Who cares? What the listener really wants to know, of course, is how many minutes more of play remain.
However, these objections or criticisms are minor in the light of what is truly important - the excellent sound reproduction the Yamaha CD-S1000 provides without any further qualifications whatsoever.
