The quality and clarity this unit produces is the best I've ever heard from a cd player. I checked it out with Jazz (Al DiMeola, Benny Goodman), R&B(Temptation, James Brown), Rock(Nickleback, Pat Benatar, Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons), Blues (Eric Clapton, BB King, Joe Bonamassa, Willie Dixon), and Country( Johnny Cash, Martina McBride,) etc.. I heard notes I hadn't heard since vinal. I am Totally impressed!
I've read about the tray not extending out fully, it's no worse then any computer disc drive I've ever owned. I tend to be careful with my music so for me it's no big deal. Well worth the effort for the joy it provides.

When playing a flash drive you can not control the player by skipping to the next song unlike when playing a CD You can move forward or backward at will.
So once you start playing songs on your flash drive it plays only as they were loaded on the flash drive. No changing from song to song.

Pleasant sound and easy to use with detachable c7 power cord. Easy to partner with other gear and not much digital sound. In comparison to Marantz CD 5004 it has less depth and insight, so it is 4 stars overall at its price.

its a single disc cd player, it plays cds like a cd player should. very simple to use and works great. The Yamaha DC-S300BL plays cd's that have scratches too. normal scuffs and buffs. I tried a few cds I've had for over 20 years and are covered in small scratches and they played like new. no problems.

Use with Asgard 2 amp and Beyerdynamic phones. Excellent. Simply no noise, absolutely clean sound. Have never used the Ipod hook up.

It does all it is supposed to but will not support sandisk clip+ MP3 player. Does just fine with a thumb drive, mp3 disk and cd disk. Great sound.

I've heard riffs that only existed when I played the original

tested this one versus older Maratz 5001 CD player. i couldnt believe my ears. this one sounds super clear, DYNAMIC and colorful. why have I used Marantz before?
everything sounds better with Yamaha, you experience different music.
tested with Yamaha A-S700 amplifier. music - thrash metal, death metal, hardcore.

I purchased my CD-S300 several weeks ago to replace a 12 year old Denon changer that had given up the ghost. I didn't necessarily expect there to be a noticeable difference in the sound, but boy was I wrong. Yamaha states that they spent a great deal of effort to ensure the highest quality circuitry in this player, and it shows. In particular, the digital to analog converter (DAC) used in this device is vastly superior to my older Denon. The sound detail in CDs is flawless, with warm (and as Yamaha says) "natural" sound that eliminates the harsh, "digital" sound of many players. The transport mechanism is smooth and well-built, and I have no problems whatsoever with skipping or difficulty playing scratched disks even though the player is located closer than it should be to my Polk subwoofer and towers, and the fact that I often play my music (from classical to rock, pop, jazz, country, hip-hop) quite loud. In addition, one can hook up an iPod or just a usb stick containing mp3s or WMA files to this device, which is a very useful feature. My one minor quibble is that the player will not decode any of the current lossless formats such as WMA lossless, AAC lossless, flac or wav, so you are stuck with still relatively high bit-rate 320 kbps mp3s or wmas. Many or most people will have a hard time telling the difference between these and a lossless format, so it's not a big deal. Those who can will have to stick with CDs.
The upshot is that this player provides a solid transport and excellent DAC for about the same price as a good stand-alone DAC. It's a great deal, especially for the $250 I paid for the "RK' variant of this player, though at $300 it's still a great value.

The yamaha s300 BL is a gorgeous sounding player. Truly "natural." This is what music should sound like, warm and clear, every instrumental timbre reproduced accurately. No harsh violins. No sterile, analytical sound. I tried the Onkyo C7030 for 10 ten days and got a case of severe listening fatigue. It never improved after many hours of burn-in. Also, the Yamaha sounds great after only a few hours of burn-in. I own an $800 Cambridge player that doesn't sound as good as this Yamaha. Please give it a try. You'll be smiling!

I bought this player recently, although without the rack mount. I'm not sure what BL stands for but it was the CD-S300 player. The sound didn't take my breath away but it met my expectations. I'm not sure how many cd players have a sound that is miles ahead of any other player but for this price anyway I wasn't expecting the moon. The sound was very acceptable. The issue for me was the disc tray. If you go to Crutchfield, where I bought the player, if you click on the picture with the cd tray out of the player, you will notice that the area the cd sits in is partly inside the player - even when it is all the way out. That means you can't just put the disc in flush vertically. Instead, if you don't want to scratch your disc, you have to put the disc partly in the player first then down into the seat the cd sits in. If you care about cd's and would rather not scratch them, you have to be extra careful because there is not a lot of room for error - only an eighth or so of an inch to play with. It was a pain and returned it.

Bought this for a Christmas gift for my husband whose Harmon Kardon gave up the ghost. He was not only surprised but amazed at the quality of sound said it was better than what he replaced hands down.

Each piece of Natural Sound audio system from Yamaha reflects that they are dedicating to produce musical instruments. I guess that Natural Sound products during the designer`s phase passed through auditive test of musicians supporting this way Yamaha`s engineers. Excellent CD player.

Plays CD's with more detail (space between instruments & vocals, wider stereo separation), and an overall smoother, cleaner sound that those "play all disc" type changers. Well worth the money for those who care about what they are listening to.

I spent more money than I initally planed but for me it was worth it. Yamaha has done a great job with this SACD player CD-S1000BL and when you hear it play you will know instantly that there is something very different about this player. The first unit I ordered was defective but Amazon provided flawless customer service in its replacement. I would like to note that such a level of commitment to service is rare. Thank you Amazon

This is a good player for casual listening. The sound is good, the design is clean and beautiful. It has no controls for pitch and direct access to the tracks as some prosumer players. A nice feature is the USB input that works with Ipod and pendrives. When using with Ipod it also charges the battery. Unfortunately wave files are not playable.

I have owned this product for 2 years and I cannot say enough good things about the Yamaha CD-S1000. In my system it is paired with an A-S2000 and ATC SCM40 speakers. In the time I have owned this player after upgrading from the CD-S700, It has never failed to amaze me with its revealing and natural sound, deep sound stage and unparalleled build quality. With the explosion of the Market for standalone digital to analog convertors (DAC), I've tried numerous options in the $300 - $800 range and I am always surprised when I go back to the CD-S1000 and all of the analysis is truly secondary to the music. I've tried the Cambridge Audio DacMagic, the Musical Fidelity M1 DAC and PS Audio's Digital Link III. All but the latter presented differences but not what I would call an improvement (tested with standard redbook CD's).
I've never listened to this player with anything other than my A-S2000 and I primarily listen to jazz SACD's. My only complaint about this product is that there isn't a digital input so that users might enjoy the sound they love with all of their digital sources.

When there is are several works on a CD and I want to listen to just one of them, I use the remote to program the appropriate tracks. Say they are 5 and 6. When these are played, instead of going continuously from track 5 to track 6, there's a break in the music. This was not the case on my previous Yamaha CD player and I hate it. I haven't found a way to communicate with Yamaha directly so I'm posting here.

I ordered and paid for a Yamaha CD-S300BL. What was shipped was a Yamaha CD-S300... the difference being I ordered the "RACK VERSION" as pictured. I have a CARVER rack system... just disapointed in that I ordered from a preferred Amazon dealer. Enough said of the SCREW UP!
This cd player is fantastic. Great sound and very simple to operate.
Just disapointed they pulled a fast one when the box is easily marked!

Got this for my analog Technics receiver, what is great is that I can load all my music on my USB Short drive and play all my music that I have downloaded from Amazon. I don't have to be loading CDs. Yamaha equipment is great.
