I have owned and used WD Raptor, VelociRaptor and Black model drives for many years now.5 year warranty threw Western Digital warranty services, which is the best and easiest to use warranty service imo for this type of product. (if you ever need it)I also own WD Black model drives I now use for storage needs. My system now runs better then with the 2TB , 64MB cache, Black model I now use for storage, which is also a quick drive suitable for most people.I choose this drive, as the benefits for SSD solutions don't out weigh the cost per GB and short limited warranty period, it was just not worth it for my needs. Most people I know use apps utilizing CPU and RAM and not for heavy I/O needs that a SSD would really shine for. I don't ignore the fact an SSD is much faster and maybe the two should no be compared, however for a regular user coming from a standard non performance type of mechanical hard drive, the difference is worth it. esp. if you need a dedicated physical drive for your operating system without having to constantly keep an eye on how much space you have and not break the bank.If you wanted to boost your performance even more while staying with a mechanical solution, quite a few people run two of these in RAID 0.I run Linux so I can not make a comparison for a Windows environment.I do know this drive meets all my computer needs in a Linux multitasking environment, running several apps at once without a single issue. It makes the same or less noise then the Black model drives I have owned and runs at a cool 84F as of this writing with other drives mounted above and below.I do not have SATA3, still have a SATA 2 controller. \On a read only test, I average a 6.4ms access time @ 131MB/s average.( min 98.4MB/s - max 151MB/s )other controllers maybe be faster or slower, I have a quality board, however thought these stats from a system running Linux ( SolusOS 1.2) may help someone.

I have a 300 GB Velociraptor in the PC I'm using to type this review and it's still working great after 3+ years, which is why I bought a pair of new 600 GB Velociraptors. No doubt, these 10K RPM units are quick and there is a definite snap to their performance compared to ordinary 7200 RPM disks. But reliability seems to be a problem.WD advertises these as "enterprise class" disks, but reliability shows me otherwise. I bought this pair only 15 months ago, and already one has completely failed. Not bad sectors, total failure, and it died suddenly without leaving any hint of impending failure in the event logs. They are installed in a PC used only for monitoring (so disk usage is very light), and the machine lives in a rack at a datacenter (a real datacenter, not just a rigged up server room) with clean filtered power and proper cooling. In other words, they live in a nearly perfect environment.I'll RMA the bad one with WD under warranty, but unfortunately I'll just get a refurbished one in return. (Translation: a repaired one that previously failed for someone eise.)UPDATE: Since laying hands on the PC (it lives in a datacenter 35 miles away) it appears the problem could have been a bad SATA cable or a failing disk controller on the motherboard. After rebooting the machine to re-detect attached devices, the Velociraptor is back in service. I can't say for sure whether the reboot brought a sketchy disk back to life, or if it was the PC at fault, so I'm replacing the PC out of caution. If this disk disappears again in the new PC, then I'll know it's a bad disk and will update this review again. In the meantime, I'm going to raise my 2-star rating to 4 stars based on the assumption this problem was the result of a defective cable or motherboard.

For office computing where the main activity is file retrieval and application opening, the WD Velociraptor represents a great intermediate point between the speed of a SSD and a regular HDD. As a baseline, we run everything at work in RAID 1 for reliability. The cost of down time / replacement time is far greater than the cost of an extra drive. Yes, this policy has saved us lots of grief on many occasions, even in regular desktops. Back to the product review. We've used standard HDDs, Intel SSDs, WD Caviar Black HDDs, and more. When you go from standard 7200 rpm HDDs to a pair of Intel 120GB SSDs, you notice a gigantic difference. The Velociraptors seem to fit nicely in between, providing two advantages. 1) Enough additional space for primary drives that we didn't begin to feel crowded even after lots of applications, and all of our regular data storage, plus the legacy stuff that users tend to drag along with them. 2) Database friendly! No worries about accelerated wear when running database intensive applications, not even a fleeting thought. The drives are a little bit noisier than a regular HDD, but not much. Videos have been published on Youtube of these drives clicking away. The sounds are accurate but the microphone must have been placed right next to the drive to pick up the sound so clearly. Once closed up in a quality case the clicks disappear into the usual office white noise of ventilation systems, typing, and conversation. We mounted them inside a smaller Dell Precision workstation.Admittedly, they are not as fast as SSDs, but they are noticeably faster than regular 7200rpm drives. (Remember, this review is written from an 'office workstation use' perspective, not gaming.) The Velociraptor fills a specific category of use, somewhat balanced between price and performance (response speed in this case). Chances are, you'll find yourself at one end of the spectrum or the other, instead of right in the middle. Home / hobbyist users (if they care) likely will want a small inexpensive SSD for speed as the system drive, and a large data storage drive to hold media collections. Corporate IT budgets will generally rule it out for workstations because it is relatively pricey. It is probably well received in some grade of servers for data-basing applications. We think that the velociraptor represents a good drive for performance workstations.

I replaced the 1TB boot-drive in my Windows 7 computer with this 600GB gem. My browser was very slow to display pages due to all the plug-ins and extensions I use. Now they literally pop up. I am also very pleased with the increase in speed with which my applications start up. It now takes 18 seconds from "Starting Windows" to the password page. It used to take around 30. Timing after the password page is rather imprecise but I get a completed desk top in about a minute from "Starting Windows" and I have years of junk on the computer. This hard drive replacement has had a greater effect on speed than any other modifications I have made, including stepping up to a new motherboard with an i7- 2600k chip.(It should go without saying that these results may only be obtained with a SATA III capable system board.)The installation is a breeze if your new drive is as big or bigger than your old drive. I had to learn (the hard way) that Windows will not recover a saved drive-image from the backup drive if the new boot-drive is smaller than the old boot-drive. It doesn't matter if the used space on the old drive is smaller than the capacity of the new drive. It is a matter of the drive volume. In order to make it work, these are the steps to take.1. Shrink the volume of your old boot-drive (see below).2. Now save a new image of the drive to your backup drive.3. Create a system recovery disc. Don't skip this. The recovery disc seems to know things your system disc does not.4. Remove the old boot drive and install the new one.5. Boot to the recovery disc and recover the image.6. Enjoy the results.Shrinking the volume of a disk is one of the easiest and more user-friendly things Windows does.1. Right click on MY COMPUTER2. Click on MANAGE3. Click on DISK MANAGEMENT4. Right click on the right portion of the C drive5. Click on SHRINK VOLUME6. There is a slick little sliding-scale dialog box that will let you experiment with sizes before making a selection. Shoot for a volume slightly smaller than your new drive. I went for about 575GB. Everything on my boot-drive comes to less than 200GB.7. You will finish with a block of volume at the far right showing unallocated space.8. After your new drive is all set up, you can expand the volume to fit the new drive if you like. I left it alone.

This 300 MB 10,000 RPM hard drive has a peak read speed about 145 MB per second and a minimum of about 90 MB per second. The main advantage is that it has about half the latency of most hard drives. When it comes to peak speed, this hard drive is just as fast as my 2 TB Western Digital Black which reached 145 MB per second also but with almost twice the latency. I did notice Windows boots up much faster as compared with my old boot drive which was the Seagate 320 GB ES series. All of my programs appears to open up faster than before. Even though this is a 10,000 RPM hard drive, the noise level is about equal to my other hard drives and I have three of them on board. I used Acronis to make an image of my C drive and saved on my storage hard drive before proceeding with installation of this hard drive. After the installation of this hard drive I have to use the Acronis software to initialize the hard drive by using Add New Hard Drive. After rebooting, I proceed with Recovery and let it run until finish which takes about 20 min. After doing all of this, I found out the computer would not boot. I did the recovery operation multiple times until I decided perhaps if I stick in the Windows 7 DVD and restarted it, it might work. I was right, it does work and the computer was able to boot up. With the insertion of the Windows 7 DVD, it was able to grab the startup files and install it. I guess, the reason for this problem is because of different file architecture between the two hard drives. It doesn't happen this way when I use recovery on the same hard drive.I am quite happy with the performance of this hard drive although it's not as fast as SSD one. Most of my programs takes about half the time to open as as compared with my old 320 GB Seagate ES series.

This was packaged very poorly. The hard drive was just chucked into a larger box and sealed. There was no bubble wrap, air cushion packets, paper, or anything to cushion and protect the hard drive during shipment. We figured it wasn't going to work when we saw this, but installed it to be sure. Surprise, surprise! It was broken and nonfunctional. Returned it and will be ordering from elsewhere rather than exchanging it for another.

I have this HDD connected to my ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z motherboard inside of a HAF-X case. Overall I am extremely happy with this disk. You can barely hear it in regular operation and it is very fast. Seems to be a solid build manufacturing wise.Con: No real cons. If you have a microcase I would check the heat build up. If you truly never want to hear your HDD, then this also might not be the right one for you. While you barely ever get to hear it, if you are moving a ton of files or putting it through a stress test, you ll hear it spin up...though I have to say that even a green drive would be audible in that case.If my view of the product changes over time, I'll update my review, but at this point I ll buy another one.

I spent 10 years working as a System Engineer for a storage vendor. We sold performance, features and reliability. Background issuesBefore my purchase, I had a Windows 7 system that took 6min 8secs to boot. And this is with a defragmented disk drive. My system is configured with 6GB of memory, a Maxtor 320GB 7200 rpm hard disk and an Intel i7 CPU. I had two major problems with this system - the aforementioned start-up time and an annoyingly slow application start-up. The fact that when waking up from sleep mode the system would still need to be re-booted due to OS problems meant I did frequent boots. I was sure after reviewing performance reports that I needed faster storage. In the past, this system was configured with a 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD (from 6/09 1/10) but it was unreliable and not earth shattering in GB capacity. However, it booted in little less than two minutes. The manufacturer said I should re-install Windows 7 after I experienced intolerable SSD driver issues. This was an effort I could not afford. Also, I didn't trust the manufacturer's solution. So the SSD now sits in my desk drawer.ConsideredSSD and VelociRaptor. Obviously, SSDs are expensive. Even the recently announced crop of SSDs are still pricey. According to the online reviewers, they have reliability issues - and that includes Intel's. SSD performance is probably not an issue for most applications I use. However, I do movie editing and THIS may be a problem for SSDs - large sequential reads and writes. For the time I used my 120GB SSD, HD 1080p movies were choppy. In fact, the Maxtor hard disk also exhibited choppy movie editing.SolutionThe VelociRaptor is terrific. It exceeded my expectations. My boot time is now 2min 38seconds from the time I hit the power button. Applications start without any annoying delays. Editing HD movies is fine. An unexpected bonus is the drive is running cool and silent. I remember earlier 10,000 rpm drive running hot and noisy. This drive is actually 2-1/2 inches in a 3-1/2 inch enclosure. Spinning the 2-1/2 inch drive does not seem to generate noise or much heat - which is the most common cause of electronic failure. Conclusion - highly recommended storage solution based on price, capacity and performance

Got this item yesterday, after spending several weeks reading reviews and debating. It was fulfilled by Amazon and came right on time. I was a bit nervous about whether it would fit into my Mac Pro, since my Velociraptor 300 required a special sled adapter, but much to my relief it slid right in and immediately fired up. I cloned my existing hard drive without a glitch and I am up and running, no problems whatsoever---yet. The drive is very quiet, hardly any noisier than the OEM drive that came with the computer. Which brings me to my only complaint. And it is a serious one. The packaging, or lack thereof. I opened the cardbox shipping box, not much bigger than the drive itself, and found the drive wrapped in a static proof bag underneath two air pillows. And that was exactly it, two air pillows and the drive, bouncing around in the box. I was enough to send chills down my spine. Come on Amazon, you CAN do BETTER than that!!! But the drive seems to be running fine so far, but its been less than 24 hours. I will update if I have any drive failures, but if there are no updates, then that means it is still running!UPDATE: For about a week, the drive seemed to be behaving erratically, and yesterday (10/3/2011) it bit the dust. I went to the Western Digital website for a warranty return authorization and the website returned a message of invalid serial number. It was after hours, so I called WD about the issue. The person (who had an Indian or Pakastani accent I could barely understand him) went throughout the same exercise with the same results. He then said there was nothing he could do since the serial number was valid. I said I want to speak to your supervisor, he went away and came back with instructions on how to send WD an email from the WD website describing the problem. I needed to attach a photo of the HD serial number and a copy of my invoice. Haven't heard anything back yet, so I will update as things play out. Based on the VERY early drive failure, Im dinging it down to 3 stars.Update 10/7/11 Western Digital called me and told me the drive was counterfeit. I called Amazon and informed them of the counterfeit drive and had a horrible time getting a refund. I cannot believe Amazon doesn't vet its sellers better. Amazon should be ashamed!!! I would not buy a drive from Amazon. Stick to reputable suppliers such as Newegg, MacMall, etc....

Amazingly, this arrived the day after I ordered it.I bought this to replace a old IDE 500 GB 7200 RPM drive on my gaming rig. I was an easy install, with tweaks. I did a back up of my old drive using Acronis TIH 2012 and then restored it to the new drive. I resized the partition in Windows 7 to 600 GB. I then ran a Microsoft FixIt to add ACHI (Microsoft Fix It 50470). ACHI is native to Windows 7, but you have to tweak the registry. After that, I changed the drive type in my BIOS to ACHI from IDE and rebooted. Everything worked fine. The drive is amazingly quiet. Yes, you can hear it if you focus on it; but otherwise it is inaudible. My boot time is considerably faster and the load time for games, Skyrim, Fall Out New Vegas and Diablo III, is much improved.Specs:Asus P6T Board12 gigs Corsair Vengeance - DDR3 1600Windows 7 Ultimate - 64EVGA 670 GTX FTW 2048MBIntel I7 920 quad coreWD 600 GB Velociraptor

This is the second of the 300 GB Velociraptor's that I have purchased and it's not likely to be the last. If you can afford to purchase all SSD Drives from OCZ, Kingston, Corsair or another Hi-Performing manufacturer then you will probably have a higher Windows Performance Index. But, you will also be paying for it! I went on Western Digitals website and noticed that you can know purchase the Velociraptor in a 1 Terabyte size. Finally, a harddrive with high performance and huge capacity. I am a Western Digital fan although, I admit that I also like the Hitachi harddrives. The benefit that I have noticed with the Western Digital drives of this quality is their longevity, I have several WD drives purchased around 2002 that are still going strong. How strong, the computers they are in are so old I gave them away to family and now only maintain them, ie Pentium 4 1.6 GHZ PCI IDE machines. I hope to be setting up my current computer with RAID 1 and RAID 5 using all Velociraptor's for drives. RAID 1 for the operating system and RAID 5 for the programs and data! With the Western Digital SATA III Velociraptor's you are getting 6.0 GB per second data transfer rates which, in comparison to most other harddrives is at the top of the food chain!

hello, i have an original 150 gb velociraptor 10k C: drive in my home computer. it has worked flawlessly for 3 years and is still going strong. but, in my spare time, it is being filled up, so i decided to get another larger drive. this time a 600 gb velociraptor 10k drive. now, my computer still has speed with lots of space for programs and projects. i back up all of my programs and projects to my external 2tb hard drive, so the main computer is lean and fast. i used to have a 5400 rpm hard drive and a 7200 rpm hard drive, but this 10k drive is by far the fastest on the market. i originally did not want to spend tons of money on the latest ssd flash drives, but i wanted speed. i chose another brand 15k drive, but did not want to add on other necessary parts needed to function in my computer. also, the reliabilty was questionable. the latest trend is a large ssd for the operating system only and a 7200rpm 1tb drive for storage. i am extremely happy with my two velociraptor set up and as long as the 10k drives work well, there is no need to change over. if i do, maybe a larger ssd and a larger velociraptor for storage. but the external storage is necessary at any rate, whether it be hard drives or cloud. the velociraptor drives are fast and reliable.

I have a gaming AMD pc with 6 of these drives in raid 0The read and write speeds are amazing 3ms seek time for a 2.5 sata 3 drive amazing. These drives do not get hot and not really warm either. Western digital made major improvements to these drives when they went to 2.5 inch for 10,000 RPM drive they are almost silent in my corsair obsiden 800D case.I always hear from people that a $500 SSD drive is faster then going raptor however time and time again I see SSD drives die or firmware bug out on them. MFG try to push SSD drives as more reliable because no moving parts but they fail more often then hdd's. Western Digital came out with a great medium for people that want speed reliable storge and awesome product for raid 0 /5 envirmoents. From this point on I will only buy Western Digital Enterprise class drives for my PC.Other great Thing about these are they are made right here in Fremont CA, Price may be a bit more then a samsung and or segate but I like buying American where ever I can.

I run 20 of these in a NAS RAID system utilizing RAID 10. These drives are amazing but under heavy use they to like to chirp. I also use these around the office for "important people" work and other mini(less than 8TB) RAIDs. They are highly reliable if they don't die in the first month. These babies were built for High I/O cycles and the chassis they ride in now does a fine job of heat dissipation.
