I think the title says it all. Performed adequately during its short lifespan. But even with backups, its demise represents at least 20 hours of work getting the system to its pre-crash state. I've bought a ton of WD Drives, but this one was a complete loser.02/08/2012 -- Follow-upI used Western Digital automated RMA site to exchange drive for a new one at a shipping cost of $5.50. Although new drive could communicate with controller, it failed basic BIOS S.M.A.R.T. tests. To insure problem wasn't with system/controller, I tried same operations with another drive--worked fine. Tried new/bad drive in another system-failed in same way. Called WD customer service. I asked if there were QA issues with this drive. The agent told me therewas no problem with the drives, but since they used an outside shipper, they had no control over whether the drive was damaged during shipping. I could see where this might be a valid argument for third party transactions, but when WD controls the whole supply chain from factory to door, this makes no sense. If the product is not properly packed by shipper, time for WD to get a new shipper. Then the agent asked me for the serial number of the new drive. When I gave it to him, he said that the serial number did not match the drive they sent out. We went over and over the serial number, and he said it wasn't even close.While he put me on hold, I went back through email from WD, and found the drive ship notice, which contained the serial number of the new drive--it was identical to the serial number I had been giving the agent! When the agent came back on the phone, he said that since the serial numbers didn't match, someone would call me tomorrow to resolve the issue. I told him about the email I had found. I said I wanted to speak to a supervisor. 20 minutes later, the supervisor came on, and said that the serial number reported by the agent was off one digit from the one I gave him. I said that I had repeatedly given himthe correct serial number. I told supervisor other things agent had told me re. damage during shipping. If it were possible I would change my 1 star to a 0 star rating.Supervisor offered to upgrade me to Caviar Black 750GB for free, and provide free return shipping for DOA new drive. I agreed, but my confidence in WD products and customer service is shaken. I spent over an hour on the phone on this issue. Hopefully, I'll have better luck with the new drive. I'll write another follow-up when it arrives and I've tested it.

I've been in the computer repair and service business for over 15 years and have never had a component fail this quickly. Normally getting an item like this exchanged by a manufacturer like Western Digital has not been a problem in the past, but recently they have all started making the process nearly impossible in the hopes of making you frustrated and give up. I'm in the process of trying to get this product returned under warranty and it's like pulling teeth! First their website told me that this drive was sold as part of a system so I couldn't register it for warranty replacement! Next I contacted WD by phone and they had me create a case online. I just got an email with links to their testing software that I have to run on a drive I know is dead. All the drive does now is spin up, click a few times, and spin down...over and over. This is the last time I ever buy a Western Digital drive. I think Seagate, Samsung, Toshiba, or Fujistu would be your best bet!

I put this into my newly built computer alongside a SSD. Overall, Western Digital has kept to their reputation and delivered an excellent HDD.Sound:I took this hard drive and plugged it in outside the computer, and I still can't hear it over the quiet whir of the fans. It the slot, it vibrates very little, so I get no noise from that as well.Operating System:I tried putting Linux Mint on this drive initially. it booted faster than I expected from a hard drive. If you are using this solely as a OS drive, then you will not be disappointed with the speed / cost ration.Music, Movies, Games:Now, this drive is for my music, movies, games, audiobooks, etc. I've seen fast transfer rates when moving a lot of data from the SSD over to this HDD. Game loading and boot times are also fast. I've never seen a loading screen over 10 seconds thus far over quite a few different games.The performance/cost ratio for WD Caviar Blue hard drives is very tough to beat. 1TB is plenty for just about anyone. With the 5 year warranty given by WD, this is as good as it gets for HDDs.

You know, they just don't make hard drives like they use to. I have always bought WD drives because I have always found them to be rock solid. I have had drives last 5 or more years. In fact I have an old Seagate drive that is running after nearly 10 years. But the build quality of drives seems to be getting really bad. I've had several drives die on me after a short period. This one started having issues after only 8 months., Luckily it is under warranty and I caught he problems before I lost data, Not sure there is a lot to do about it. I still think WD drives are the best. I might have to try Toshiba or Samsung.

This isn't a review but it's the only way I know to post more information regarding this product. (I don't see the following info posted anywhere at Amazon and I looked pretty hard for it. And I have to check a star rating in order to post. I have no reason to doubt a WD drive, as none I've ever owned has ever failed. And I've owned a few different ones. So, four stars.)I've not yet purchased the WD10EALX, but very well might. Info is too often not displayed at Amazon and I was wondering about difference in interface (6Gbs/s vs. 3Gb/s), since Amazon claims this drive is a "newer version" of the WD10EALS. So I wrote Western Digital with a question, their reply to which is posted verbatim just below for any who wants more info: (Note in the reply, "SATA II," whereas Amazon claims, "SATA III." From where does Amazon get information one wonders? Maybe there is a SATA III generation, but if so I'm not aware of it.)"Dear Charles,Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. The model WD10EALX is a SATA-II device, whereas the model WD10EALS is a SATA-I device. There is no difference in the interface of the two disk drives other than the fact that one is faster than the other. Both of these drives are fully compatible with any SATA-II or SATA-I interface controllers."Now I know that I could buy the WD10EALX in place of the WD10EALS for which I was looking and which Amazon does sell through a couple of its sellers at outrageous prices (although, in general, beware of differences in cache sizes; i.e., 16MB vs. 32MB. Price differs quite a lot based on cache size). Amazon, other than wrongly claiming "SATA III" is otherwise correct in claiming the WD10EALX is a "newer version," but I couldn't be sure when Amazon can't or won't post all info; namely, that the drive here is fully backward compatible. My computer and probably most of those owned by buyers here, at 3Gbs/s, can't handle 6Gbs/s, but--as I know now--that's not a problem.Thanks to Western Digital for information.

Ordered as a second drive (back-up) for my computer which is set up for a home office. Arrived on time and well packaged. Working through Disk Management (Windows 7), I identified the drive, gave it a name, and formatted it. All told, a 5 minute set up and it has worked fine for the last month that I have been using it. I think it's a good drive and would recommend it to any one needing more storage for a home office set up.

Western Digital is a gold standard.Every review, every technician I talk to confirms that.They last and have a 2year guarantee.AND THEY ARE QUIET!!Installation is a breeze using the western digital edition Acronis cloning software you can download at:[...]It will copy your current hard drive without any hassle and is easy to use and works well.I used to use Seagate and Maxtor drives when they were made better, but now I am sold on Western Digital.

This comes very bare bone. It would have been wonderful for amazon to let it be known that the hard drive does not come with mounting screws or a SATA cable. My valentines present will now be a week late. It would probably only cost western digital a single dollar to include screws and a SATA cable. Again, if you buy this please MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT NEED A SATA CABLE OR HARD DRIVE MOUNTING SCREWS. If you do need them, order them at the same time as an add on item and it will be much cheaper. I cannot review the quality of the drive yet as I do not have the proper stuffs to instal it.

Died after 1 week. It had 26 bad blocks and started to freeze every 3 min after the first problem. Amazon's tech support tried different ways to replace it and I got a Hitachi 500Gb but I had to pay ~10$ more, plus the delivery. However, they gave me an amazon credit for this. All in all, this is the 3rd WD I owned. The first one died after 3 years, got it replaced with a refurbished WD through the warranty program, and 2nd one lasted 2 years. I hope Hitachi will last longer. I have a 70 Gb Hitachi as a backup, which is 5 and 1/2 years old, tested with S.M.A.R.T and has no problems yet!. I hope the new one will last as much as this little one. Initially the S.M.A.R.T test showed thousands of bad blocks but after one day all tests returned 0. Anyway after 1 month, the HDD is working with no problems, and is very quiet! I recommend Hitachi, forget WD Caviar Blue 500 GB. for now.

I have always had good luck with Western Digital drives and this component was no exception. I was debating in my mind between this 32mb buffer drive (Blues) and the 64mb buffer (Blacks). The blacks have been criticized for being excessively noise while the blues are credited with being quieter. This drive is certainly quite enough for my purpose. I have three drives mounted in the case and adding this drive made no additional noise of which I am aware. The case ventilation fans contribute more to noise than all the drives together. Installation was just as easy as one would expect. Just install, add cables, reboot, and define partitions. Talking the word of others, I don't think there is much practical value to going from 32mb buffer to the 64mb buffer. However, I really have no way to make quantitative evaluation between the buffer options.Some purchases have companied that poor packing of these units resulted in shipping damage. My drive was very well packed and damaged free. These drives are OEM, so there is no instructions, screws, or cables, etc. but as a builder this is what I expected.

I have been had. This is the second time I get a defective WD drive. WD is definitely crap. This one was dead on arrival, but as I installed it after two months, I can't return it. The other one worked a few months after dying. They all have the same problem with the reading head. You hear weird noises and clicks, and nothing happens.

It's a Western Digital, which deserves 5 stars right there. I have used WD drives as long as I've used computers and they have always lasted a long time for me. An ancient 40 Gig HD I had lasted for a good 7-8 years before the dreaded clicking started.However, in this review I decided to give it 4 stars based mostly on speed and performance relative to what else is out there.Windows 7 rates this drive as a 5.9 out of 7.9 fresh out of the box, which is exactly where it should be. It's not an SSD, it doesn't have a huge cache, and 7200 RPM, while good, isn't extreme as some other models out there.

General Stuff:Have been using this drive for quite awhile now. It has been loaded with Windows XP, Linux Mint, Ubuntu as a triple boot OS drive. That all worked just fine. It has sense been formatted, and other combinations of OS's have been loaded many times.Right now it is being used as a Windows XP primary OS drive.Bade Stuff:The only issue with this drive is: it will develop a buzzz on boot-up, and once in a while it will do it while running. When I test it for errors, it comes up good, and does not show any heat issues. It appears to be OK!That is why I keep it backed-up consistently. Will never use it as a primary system OS drive or as a main storage drive. Don't really trust it.Good Stuff:It is a bit quicker than average in my testing, but nothing to brag about. It runs cooler than normal in load testing by a bit. However, if you run enough air through your case, everything runs cooler.Conclusion:The WD5000AAKX has worked well, it has been worked hard, it still has not developed any bad sectors, and I have been happy with my purchase from Amazon.

I have been using Western Digital HDD's for a long time and have yet to have one fail.This one one used in a new system I built in a shuttle SFF computer. large enough for OS and programs, and fast enough that it is a good work horse for a desktop!as usual, best price I could find at the time!

I bought a cheap SATA III adapter and run my DVD/CD burner and the WD drive through it.Seems to be faster. Also I wanted more space so I could dedicate 50 Gb to system partitions for Vista and Windows Server. I like to multi boot and run trial versions of Microsoft OSes on the second partition.

This drive was easy to install and is working perfectly so far. My computer boots in seconds. Eventually, I will add an SSD drive for my OS and my Games and this will become a data drive, but for now I am very happy with it.

Slower than my SATA I drive it was replacing. Took about 5 hours to install Windows 7 and any major thing the requires the hard drive freezes up the system. Super loud too.

Bought this to replace and old drive I had that failed. So far it's been flawless and I have had it for a year. Use the drive every day for my work. The speed is good. I really can't complain for the price. Was the best option from what I could tell from my research.

came with no install hardware(cd) and the WD web site software dose not recognize it so not so good at all, from what I have read they must have been rejects or something can't believe amazon sells. my newr system running windows8 won't install it right?

This is a good replacement drive for your old SATA drive that may be less than 500 GB. This is a bulk drive and is not shipped in a retail box which would contain SATA cable or CD Data-transfrer-drive coppy software...so if you need either of those items you need to download the software from west/Digi directly and get a SATA cable.Drive comes adequately shipped in a shrink-wrapped antistatic bag. Average price for 500 Gig drive WD-Blue is less than 55 bucks not inclu shipping...so with shipping icluded this was a good purchace for the buck.

WAS NOT 500GB- WAS ONLY 465 GB - WHERE IS THE OTHER 35 GB's ? IN THE MAIL ? HARD DRIVE CRASHED UNREPAIRABLE - WENT TO WAL MART BOUGHT ONTHER ONE THIS ONE HAS A WARRENTY - THIS VENDER OUGHT TO BE TARRED,FEATHERED, SET OUTSIDE IN THE COLD NAKED - I WILL NOT RECOMEND NOR BUY FROM THIS VENDER AGAIN - WILL EVEN THINK TWICE ABOUT USING AMAZON AGAIN - I LOST $60 ON THIS DEAL .

It works really well. Just remember to only use about 25% for the C drive with Windows on it and use the rest for storage to get the most out of it.

I would echo what many others have said... When bought from Amazon, it comes w/almost NO packing materials to protect it. I got just over 2 years from it before it died (after 2 days of making really loud sounds for no obvious reason at the time.) That's better than the folks who got less than 6 months, but not much consolation when you lose everything, have spent the money, and are having to start over...again. I will be looking elsewhere - both store AND brand to replace this WD replacement.

I bought an Emachines ET1831 on Amazon. OK, but I ended up buying a video card, This required more power supply, so I also bought a corsair(great product) power supply. Worked perfect for about one month over 1 year. It just so happens that is the extent of the warranty from Emachines. Amazon vendor sent a message back that "there is nothing WE can do"(meaning no warranty left). Go to the MFR. Seagate knows via the S/N that the HDD(750GB) was in an emachines, and will not replace. So, I will not buy another seagate- ever.Decided to try the WDD 1TB drive. Installed smoothly, and the Emachines recovery DVD set worked perfectly to replace the software, except for the freeware, and marketing crap. But so far, so good. The WDD is quiet, and fast enough for this system. Thanks WDD, and Amazon, and screw you seagate- a HDD should last at least five years, OR you should replace it under warranty. Thanks for the chance to offer my review, Amazon- I hope this helps someone.

Ordered two of these. Cloned my system drive to one of them and made it my new system drive. A few days later had some problems so I ran checkdisk - bad clusters. Am returning it. The other drive seems to be working OK (so far). Like the title says - buying drives is a real crapshoot - you roll the dice and take your chances.
