We have a Windows XP PC with 250GB hard drive that was getting full with photos and videos. We therefore ordered this inexpensive upgrade to triple the capacity to 750GB total. We ordered the same Western Digital Caviar Blue hard drive as the original since our old drive has been quite reliable over the past 4 years. [Western Digital also makes Green drives that are cooler and quieter, but supposedly not so reliable; and Black drives for gaming performance that we didn't need.] The new 500GB hard drive, as stated, is "bare". That means 2 cables are needed along with it - a data cable, and a power cable. We found this out by contacting Western Digital Tech Support who were quite helpful. We ordered these cables from amazon.com as well: B0001Y8UI4, and B00009YFTI. The ambition was to do this at home; but realized upon opening the PC box that it wasn't so easy - the connections were not easy to figure out including jumper to lower the speed of the new drive from 6Gb/s to 3Gb/s - that Western Digital had warned us about to be compatible with the older PC. Fortunately, a local computer repair shop agreed to do it for only $50 [the same components purchased from them would have been twice as much as amazon.com!] as opposed to Best Buy Geek Squad that wanted over $200 for the same labor. Now, the programs are on the old hard drive [C:] and the data is on this new drive [E:]. The hardware is not a problem; it is working fine as it should. The problem is with software handling the transition of the data. The document folders were an easy fix - change designation from C: to E: for each user. But some programs have been a pain: For example, iTunes had to be directed to E: drive and in the process of rebuilding its library, duplicated all files and also lost the playlists. It is now a headache to manually fix 200GB of iTunes library data since, as we all have experienced, there is no support when it comes to software [Help forums haven't responded]. But I believe we are good to go for another few years after this.

As a computer repair business owner I have to let customer demand limit my choices in inventory. I have purchasing the blue line for a few years now and have to say that reliability has been a huge issue. I have been buying WD drives since they used to have a 5 year warranty. Now it is either 1 or 2 years. You will only get about 25 months on one of these drives. Of course there are drives which have much greater life expectancy, but hard drive prices have really spiked in recent months. Therefore, against the better judgement of myself, the professional, my customers demand the low grade hard drives as it is half price of the more reliable. One other note - like other amazon bare drives, the packaging is completely inadequate to protect the drive from the rigors of shipping. If you really really need one for a job - better order 2. I have had to return several hard drives shipped from amazon in this inferior packaging. The blue seems to be a set up from the green, which I have found to failing at an alarming rate; In terms of both seek times, reliability, and overall performance.

It's a bare hard drive that arrived quickly from Amazon and well-packaged. I replaced a 500GB WD Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS with this WD Caviar Blue WD10EALX as the primary drive in an HP i7 desktop. This drive and the old WD drive show basically identical CrystalMark results, but it does seem to load programs and boot faster (I restored an image of the old installation to the new disk, so everything else is the same). CrystalMark shows that it outperforms the Green series drives I own by 20-30%.I was looking at the WD Caviar Black drives, and saw some reviews that said they are loud, so I went for this one, which is advertised as quieter and cooler than the Black series and insignificantly slower than a Black. I don't have a Black series to compare to, but the WD10EALX is definitely louder than the 500GB Blue version, and also louder than 1TB and 2TB WD Green drives that I own. It's not LOUD, but it is louder than those other drives. It has the normal disk seek sound which is not annoying, but present in the same way the computer fan noise is present. If you are going for the ultimate in quiet, then this isn't it.If you want to compare this to Seagate, then it is a 300 star product. I used to be a Seagate customer as their price/performance ratio seemed great. I got hosed by Seagate with a 1.5TB drive, the same one that everyone else got hosed on. They offered to recover my data for $900. I told them to stuff it and I only buy WD and other brands now. My plan is to use this drive a year or so and replace with SSD, demoting this one to backup. I'd probably try another brand at this price point if I had to buy another 7200RPM 1TB drive, but I am not disappointed in my purchase, just underwhelmed by the performance. It is advertised as being quiet and fast, but it is not quieter nor faster than the disk it replaces, hence the relatively low rating and minor disappointment.

I was helping a friend upgrade his system and he was rather strapped for cash. This happened to be when hard drive prices had jumped due to flooding overseas, so I chose this Western Digital "Blue" 500gb drive for his upgrade as it fit his budget. It's fast, It's quiet, and doesn't generate a lot of heat. Just about every time I hear from him he thanks me for picking such a great hard drive. I always tell him to write Western Digital and thank them for making it.

I've had very good experiences with them over the years. This is my 3rd PC build and I was replacing a 4 year old seagate that I originally built the system with. Installation was as difficult as falling off a log, once it was booted up with Win7 no problems. Quiet, good speeds - looking forward to many years of reliable service from it. Glad to see the price on a 1TB drive dropped a little recently to a better price point for me.

I have never purchased a drive that did not come with a connecting cable before. I guess there is always a first time for everything. Now that I have gone back and searched for the word "cable," deep into the description I found the disclaimer "Bare drive does not include any cables or mounting hardware." Caveat Emptor, even from Amazon.I will over come this, but now my one week resolution to replace a bad drive will take two weeks. I am not pleased. I threw out my last cable with the drive figuring a new one will arrive with the purchase, which is a normal expectation. If this were someone buying a second hard drive for a new machine, they would have to go out and buy a cable go along with it. This kills any price savings on the drive and shipping that you might get from Amazon.

I bought this drive and copied over my installation from my old drive. Pretty soon, I noticed that my computer was running very slowly. I found out that this drive was getting speeds as low as 1 mb/s. So, I returned it to Amazon, got a new one, and had the same problem. On both drives, I tried re-installing Windows, and I ran error scans and defragged. Western Digital's customer service was no help at all. Also, it can't be my motherboard's SATA controller because my old Maxtor drive still gets normal speeds. Normally, I wouldn't give a bad review for a defective product, but considering that I got it replaced and the same problem occurred, there is no excuse. Western Digital sucks, go with another brand.

Got great service, as usual from Amazon. Ordered it one day and got it the next for only $21.90. However, I am concerned about the Drive. It makes a noise at start up and at times when it appears that it has to move a large distance. I wish I could describe the noise -but- I can not think of the proper words. It is NOT a grinding sound, more like a stretching sound... like errrrrppppt. I have also had a couple of mishaps on the start up. These required a re-boot. Again, however, I have a dual boot system... and the second one is the latest openSuSE 12.1 release. So further testing and analysis is needed to determine whether -or- not I received a defective drive. Other than that it is great and IF it needs to be replaced I will ask for the same thing ... only a properly working one.

I purchased several of these drives to use as spares for servers that had the previous generation SATA II 3.0 Gb/sec WD3200AAKS drive. Well as luck would have it, I've had some failures of those old ones and went to replace them, only this drive was not recognized by the computer. After a day of digging, turns out there is a buggy Intel SATA II controller out there in many makes and models of computers that does not properly interact with this particular drive, causing the drive to remain at the 6.0 Gb/sec interface speed and the controller at 3.0 Gb/sec; i.e. no communication possible. The fix is to place a jumper across pins 5 and 6 which will force the drive to SATA II speeds and make it show up. Unfortunately it doesn't come with any jumpers, so hopefully you have an old computer lying around you can steal one out of.The same article on WD's site that gave me the fix also said it was possible to perform this fix using a software program they offer called WDSpeed but they refused to give me a copy for some reason and said I had to go buy some jumpers.

My first Western Digital drive, that came with my Dell computer, lasted me about 9yrs. It would have lasted longer, if I had my CPU connected to a UPS and protected against power surges and outages. My first HD change out was pretty painless. I just installed the new drive, turned on my computer, and put the OS install disc into my CDROM drive. The drive itself is very quite, and seems to be running flawlessly. I'll update this review if that changes.BTW, those whose who are intested in recovering data from their failed drive should check out: Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter. That worked, along with fixing my old drives disc via the cmd window. I was finally able to access it, with the drive in a external drive mode.

Got this drive to replace a smaller drive, I installed this drive only to find out the drive was dead. Amazon had a no return on this drive. I contacted WD and they replaced the drive, but it cost me $13.00 to send the dead drive to them. I installed the replacement and glory and behold the drive is unreadable or writeable. I spent the next several days corresponding with WD on their try this see if that works. Tried about everything check desk won't work because drive is unreadable, formatting won't work there's way too many bad sectors I stopped counting them after 75. I finally got feed up told them I was not spending any more time or money jacking with this drive I just want my money back and I will get another brand. As it sets now I am using the drive as a paper weight that's all its good for. As I see it now either Amazon or WD owes me money, and so far I am just getting the pass the buck routine.
