I bought this drive and copied over my installation from my old drive. Pretty soon, I noticed that my computer was running very slowly. I found out that this drive was getting speeds as low as 1 mb/s. So, I returned it to Amazon, got a new one, and had the same problem. On both drives, I tried re-installing Windows, and I ran error scans and defragged. Western Digital's customer service was no help at all. Also, it can't be my motherboard's SATA controller because my old Maxtor drive still gets normal speeds. Normally, I wouldn't give a bad review for a defective product, but considering that I got it replaced and the same problem occurred, there is no excuse. Western Digital sucks, go with another brand.

HD came in a box with nothing else. Had no trouble installing in my new build, connected SATA cable to mother board and connected power. Thats all their was to it, worked immediately, still working. I have had several WD Hard dirves, all have been good.

Got great service, as usual from Amazon. Ordered it one day and got it the next for only $21.90. However, I am concerned about the Drive. It makes a noise at start up and at times when it appears that it has to move a large distance. I wish I could describe the noise -but- I can not think of the proper words. It is NOT a grinding sound, more like a stretching sound... like errrrrppppt. I have also had a couple of mishaps on the start up. These required a re-boot. Again, however, I have a dual boot system... and the second one is the latest openSuSE 12.1 release. So further testing and analysis is needed to determine whether -or- not I received a defective drive. Other than that it is great and IF it needs to be replaced I will ask for the same thing ... only a properly working one.

I purchased several of these drives to use as spares for servers that had the previous generation SATA II 3.0 Gb/sec WD3200AAKS drive. Well as luck would have it, I've had some failures of those old ones and went to replace them, only this drive was not recognized by the computer. After a day of digging, turns out there is a buggy Intel SATA II controller out there in many makes and models of computers that does not properly interact with this particular drive, causing the drive to remain at the 6.0 Gb/sec interface speed and the controller at 3.0 Gb/sec; i.e. no communication possible.The fix is to place a jumper across pins 5 and 6 which will force the drive to SATA II speeds and make it show up. Unfortunately it doesn't come with any jumpers, so hopefully you have an old computer lying around you can steal one out of.The same article on WD's site that gave me the fix also said it was possible to perform this fix using a software program they offer called WDSpeed but they refused to give me a copy for some reason and said I had to go buy some jumpers.

I like this hard drive. I ordered the 500GB version of it. Not really much to say except it gets a 5.9 on the Windows Experience Index. Also it doesn't come with a SATA cable, but then again, my motherboard did.The bottom line is it's a good 500GB SATA III hard drive for the price.

My first Western Digital drive, that came with my Dell computer, lasted me about 9yrs. It would have lasted longer, if I had my CPU connected to a UPS and protected against power surges and outages. My first HD change out was pretty painless. I just installed the new drive, turned on my computer, and put the OS install disc into my CDROM drive.The drive itself is very quite, and seems to be running flawlessly. I'll update this review if that changes.BTW, those whose who are intested in recovering data from their failed drive should check out: Cables To Go USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter. That worked, along with fixing my old drives disc via the cmd window. I was finally able to access it, with the drive in a external drive mode.

Got this drive to replace a smaller drive, I installed this drive only to find out the drive was dead. Amazon had a no return on this drive. I contacted WD and they replaced the drive, but it cost me $13.00 to send the dead drive to them. I installed the replacement and glory and behold the drive is unreadable or writeable. I spent the next several days corresponding with WD on their try this see if that works. Tried about everything check desk won't work because drive is unreadable, formatting won't work there's way too many bad sectors I stopped counting them after 75. I finally got feed up told them I was not spending any more time or money jacking with this drive I just want my money back and I will get another brand. As it sets now I am using the drive as a paper weight that's all its good for. As I see it now either Amazon or WD owes me money, and so far I am just getting the pass the buck routine.

Drive loud, stalls occasionally. Why I bought WD again, I don't know. They get GREAT reviews, but I have never had one as good as a Seagate, or even, Hitachi.Too late to send back.

Good drive, reasonable speed. Using as a backup in a external USB case. MUST be partitioned before use or windows can't see it. There is FREE partitioning software available from several secure download sites. (Majorgeeks{dotcom} is my favorite download site) Once you partition the drive you can format and use it normally. I am using this as a backup with cloning software from WD's website which works very well. Saved my ash just last week. I had switched from ESET to MS Security Essentials (it's free and now I know why) and within three day I got a highjacker. Couldn't do anything, couldn't even reformat the drive! Popped in the just-cloned drive and I'm back in business. (Also went back to ESET right away) BEWARE of FREE security!!!!(IT AIN'T SECURE!!!!)

This HDD is terribly loud compared to other HDD I have had, I used to have an old 120GB Samsung that was far better, then I just bought a 2TB Samsung and it is also more silent by far.Regarding performance it has done it well but it's been just 3 months since I got it, about reliability I won't make good reputation to WD because my other WD myBook failed after 2 years of use and I don't have high hope with this one, I don't know why I bought WD it in the first place, I guess it was for the price but if possible just add another 20bugs and buy Samsung or Seagate, you won't regret it, I bought WD and I am now afraid I will lost data in a couple of years.My Rig:ASUS P8Z68-V PRO Motherboard.Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHzCorsair Vengeance Blu 8 GB PC3-12800 1600mHz DDR3Case Coller Master Storm Enforcer.Corsair Enthusiast Series 750-WattCrucial 64 GB m4olid State DriveWestern Digital 1 TB Caviar Blue SATA III 7200 RPM (not a good choice)Spinq Vt Cpu Cooler Spinq Vt Cpu CoolerASUS VH238H 23-Inch LED Monitor

I purchased the Western Digital 1 Tb Sata 6.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-oem Drive WD10EALX from Midwest Memory Outlet through Amazon. The drive was received within 3 or 4 days and was packaged extremely well. My original Seagate drive from my HP m9550F failed and was replace by the WD. The Seagate was the drive that HP kept shipping after a drive bios error was long known about. Information from the internet showed that lots of people lost valuable data because HP just kept shipping a drive with a known problem. Anyhow, I did get a bios update for the Seagate before it failed but it ended up failing anyhow.The WD10EALX drive is fairly loud. I still have the drive located outside the case so that may contribute to the sound level. The noise seems to be from the head movement. The platter spin is silent. For the price this is one drive that is hard to beat and I am well pleased with it. My bios can't take advantage of the 6 Gb/s transfer rate but the drive is plenty fast just the same. I have loaded around 600 gig of data onto it. After around 3 weeks I'll assume it will not fail and put the case back together. If it fails I'll update this review. I noticed on NewEgg that a few failures were being reported. Not the long-term ones but the more likely out of the box ones. Here's keeping my fingers crossed. (Boot drive failures are a pain).UPDATE:OK. I put the case back together. The drive is not silent but it is pretty quiet. I can hear just faint clicks as it does its thing. Very nice. No problems with the drive at all. Recommended.

Ships without the jumper, and Western Digital refuses to ship me one. I called technical support and they told me to buy it on Best Buy?? You have to be kidding me. Can have this brick back since they are too cheap to provide the tiny jumper that is necessary for its installation.

My use for these drives is to replace a couple of aging five year old 80GB drives in Windows XP and XP Media Center machines. Those drives are still running fine, however, for the price, I had absolutely no reason not to upgrade them at this time.I came across this drive middle of last week and Amazon was selling it new for $29 - I was scratching my head thinking "what's the deal" and "what's wrong with these drives"? Sure, even though they were above $25, Amazon was still charging for the shipping - so I took two to bring the per drive shipping down slightly. The old 3Gb version of this drive was selling for over $40 - so again, scratching my head about this. Maybe it was a pricing mistake? Whatever - it was a great price.The drives arrived yesterday, same standard OEM packaging all of my six other WD drives have come in over the past 9 months. I used Clonezilla to clone the old drives on to the new, it went smoothly without any issues. I'm storing the old drives just in case these new ones have any issues I won't have to rebuild the system drives from scratch.I know that the motherboards in my machines cannot make use of the 6Gb throughput, however, these drives are definitely faster than what they're replacing - older WD drives which indicate they are 7200RPM and 3Gb. Specs on the older drives indicate performance shouldn't be all that different, but it is, and for the better. I won't question it.The drive indicates you can jumper pins 5 and 6 to limit it to 3Gb, but I didn't understand the benefit of doing it, so I left it unjumpered and it's working well.To summarize - these drives are fast, quiet, and so far are performing excellently. I'm very happy with them thus far.

I ordered this drive after my original drive crashed. It has worked great so far. It installed quickly and is a very quiet drive. I enjoy the additional capacity that it offers and the price was good too. I would buy another if I needed.

Received withing 3 days of order, and installed in my PC within one hour of opening the panel and attaching the cables. I used ACRONIS Migrate Easy (use the Free Trial Version- good for 15 days) to clone the original drive to this new one. Took approximately 25 minutes total. Works great

I AM USING THIS DRIVE AS A SECOND HARD DRIVE IN MY SYSTEM TILL I CAN BE CERTAIN IT WILL NOT CRASH. AMAZON HAS ISSUED SOME CAN OF WARNING ABOUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS DRIVE. I HAVE HAD IT IN MY SYSTEM ABOUT THREE WEEKS SO FAR SO GOOD. IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON USING THIS DRIVE AS YOUR MAIN DRIVE I AM NOT SURE I WOULD DO THAT. HOPE THIS HELPS.

It is against my superstitious mind to write a good review after using a product for one day, so no long story, just an add-on about what I was looking for in other reviews:Holding on to Win XP I was worried about the new format of WD HDs and their compatibility with XP. And with their jungle of HD names and series's I wasn't able to find out. But I had no problems at all so far installing a fresh copy of it onto the new HD including partitioning without any slipstreaming of drivers etc. All you need is SP2 included in your XP install CD, that does the job.Now I don't know if I could tweak a couple of minibittymicroseconds out of it by installing some WD tool or changing blocksizes or whatever - I don't care, it runs fine right now and fast enough for me so never change a running system :o)As for further performance and durability I will update this later...

I purchased 5 of the 1TB version of this drive. One drive went into my Windows Home Server, the other four are now a RAID 1+0 array in my PC, connected to and managed by the motherboard's Intel chipset's RAID controller. My PC is on the floor, next to my desk and I don't hear any difference in noise level. I may also have a minor loss of hearing, but still... :)It's hard to believe that I could add 2TB of striped and mirrored storage for less than $300. My first hard drive purchase was in 1987. A 20MB "Hard card" pre-mounted to a RLL controller card for $300. This WD drive is like a device from a sci-fi novel.So, don't hesitate to buy this drive, and get off of my lawn.

This hard drive is the best mid-range hard drives out there. We run a computer repair shop and THIS is the drive that we always use as a replacement in customers computers.For 500GB, you just can't beat the price. In my 15 years of business I have seen a few hard drive companies come and go, rise and fall. Maxtor was the beast hard drive of all time (until Seagate bought and crushed them). Now, Western Digital holds the best drive, as Maxtor once did.If you are looking for a great all around basic hard drive, then this is for you. If you are looking for speed and performance such as needed with a "gaming rig" then choose Western Digital BLACK series.

Bought two of these (1TB) to replace the Seagate 120GB HDDs that I had in a D-Link DNS-321 2-Bay Network Attached Storage. The most trouble I had was getting the RAID 1 with all the space on the larger drives.The drives work great and not loud at all. I have the NAS right by my desk and I hardly notice it on, in fact my switch makes more noise that it does.For those interested in doing what I did to upgrade the drives you can check out the links below (not my instructions). I actually did most of the steps using a telnet session to the DNS-321, but you need to at least clone one drive to get to that part.[...][...]

I purchased a 500GB unit since I don't really need much storage. I simply REPLACED my older 160GB Hitachi with this newer 500GB WD drive. Since installation, the average temperature on my multiple-core microprocessor has risen at least 10 degrees Fahrenheit so this drive runs significantly hotter than the Hitachi. In warmer environments, this emission of heat could cause problems. During the day, I find the temperature on the cores rising to ~ 140 degrees F whereas the average temperature was ~ 125 degrees F before replacement of the Hitachi. Naturally, I still recommend this drive, but beware of the heat.

Received in less than a week from Amazon and in excellent condition. Replaced a 160GB 7200 SATA drive in my circa 2006 Dell Dimension E510. Install was very easy and the drive is very quiet. If doing again, I would have checked the WD confirmed that my RAID controller was compatable with the drive before ordering...but it did. While I loaded the WD Acronis utility software (from the WD website) I did not use it to clone my old drive as I was upgrading my OS to Win7, but the backup and recovery features of the software look intriguing. It has only been installed for 2 days now, but so far so good.

I love WD drives, but I am not pleased with this one. Unfortunately I could not believe how LOUD this drive is! Too noisy. This hard drive is the only part of my system that makes any noticeable amount of noise.My Western WD1002FAEX Digital WD Caviar Black 1 TB SATA 6 GB/S 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Internal Desktop Hard Drive is extremely quiet, far more better than this one.

This drive would be a nightmare for the inexperienced, hence 4 stars. No instructions or software included! Had to download drivers and install a floppy boot drive to complete installation. Otherwise, the drive is quiet and fast.

I Just built a new system and this is my boot drive. It is very fast and quiet. I did use a very high end Asus mother board which does recognize the 6 gbps performance of this drive and 12 gig of corsair 1600 ram. But still the Windows 7 boot times are crazy fast.I have noticed that some reviews said that "green" versions of these drives were loud. This is the "black" version and you can't hear it running, very quiet. It is a bare drive so you don't get nay cables or hardware but did come very well packaged in an anti-static bag. Make sure you use SATA cables marked 6 gbps there is a difference from the standard 3 gbps cables. (amazon does carry these for about $3 dollars)New technology is always expensive but this is a great drive so far.
