These drives are just over-priced Caviar Black drives. Unfortunately, you must pay the extra sixty bucks if you need RAID capable drives. WD has disabled TLER on the Caviars that is required in a RAID environment. If you don't plan on setting up an array, don't waste your money on these. Up until late last year Caviars supported TLER by a software switch but I guess WD needed a gimmick to make more money without actually doing anything.I read complaints about packaging. I bought two of these. Both were suspended in cusioned cradles in separate boxes placed together into another. They were well, if not over, protected.

Amazon's frustration-free packaging will lead to nothing but headaches here and drive failures. It's shipped in something that looks like what a book would be shipped in. The box is way too large for a 3.5" drive and the drive just slides around the inside of the box. Lots of failures reported by consumers who got 2TB consumer WD drives from Amazon in the same packaging. I can only hope that my 18 RE3 drives I ordered from here don't die in a few days.

Bought 8 of these drives for a RAID-5 build. Tested all of them with WD's software. They are okay. One month after the build, one of the 8 drives keeps dropping out of the RAID array. Can't return it to Amazon. Have to deal with WD for RMA. :-(Other than the one bad drive experience, I like these drives. They are very quiet and cool.

I had one of this model fail in a DROBO disk array and while I waited for WD to replace it, I ordered some more overnight through Amazon. 3 things. The disks performed well over some 9 months without being overly hot. Amazon's speed and packing were excellent. And the WD warranty replacement went quite quickly - under a week from reporting it to getting replacement. Now I've got spares for the shelf or to add to the array.

This definitely seems worth the money. It is hard to find the differences between the Caviar Black drives and the RE drives, but to what I understand as the main difference is that the RE Drive has shock absorption in both horizontal and vertical loads, where as the Caviar Black drive only has shock absorption on 1 axis. The other features are really raid specific and do not apply to my application. It's pretty fast too.

So, I bought 3 of these recently for a RAID-0 in my Tyan S2915-E MoBo, and I would constantly keep getting errors in Nvidia Mediashied saying that the array was going to fail soon. Long story short, the problem was from both ends, the NVidia driver on XP X64 and one of the disks being bad. one think I'll tell right now is that You absolutely must run the WD test utility to ensure the health of the drives as soon as you recieve them to avoid any confusion. There was a point when I thought my Mobo was bad. Amazon was super cool for sending me a replacement without even waiting for me to send in my faulty drive unit. Performace is definitely great as I am running all three as a 3-way striped RAID-0 Array. To rate these drives as a single drive is useless, for that you have the black edition drives anyway. the RE3 is for RAID and I think rating their RAID performance should be the only performance review.

Have had several HD failures over recent past. Spoke to many about this and they have experienced the same thing. Solution I kept hearing was get enterprise HD. So am giving this a try and at least for now I am pleased with it.

The original hard drive in my HP EX485 MediaSmart server was nearly full and I wanted to add an additional drive in one of the remaining bays. After reading online information and after a short discussion with a Western Digital representative, I decided that a Western Digital RE3 series drive would meet my needs for a fast and robust internal hard drive.The drive arrived quickly and in excellent shape. The installation in the server was easy. The drive has been working correctly in the server for several weeks.

I purchased two of these to set up in a RAID configuration on my DELL to install Windows 7. The quality of the casing and drive on appearance are impressive. As I took out my older drives that came with the machine originally you can really tell the difference. Drive was easy to set up.

Got this for Synology DiskStation DS209 - to backup my home network. It's a very solid drive and when using for critical backup - you should feel good that this has a 5 year warranty - that is hard to find so I'm banking on this enterprise-level drive being of solid build. I think that is why it costs a little more than comparable drives. I didn't have any problems with shipping - mine was tight in a box with two plastic end covers holding the drive securely - end covers fit perfectly in the box.

I bought the drive from Amazon. It arrived in 2 days. The drive was packed securely. I tested it using the WD utility downloaded from their website. The drive passed the surface scan test with flying colors. I installed it into my Apple iMac and it has been working ever since. I highly recommend this drive.

This 1 TB hard drive performs like all other Western Digital hard drives that I've purchased in the past: Excellent! The 32MB of embedded buffer, along with it's capacity, speed, and reliability -- clearly made it a valuable upgrade. This hard drive also spins very quietly.

Expensive drive was shipped in plastic bag between two loosely fit air pillows. Foam was not used as mentioned. Drive was basically free to slosh around in box.YES, OEM drive, but there is no retail version of this drive. Don't buy this drive from Amazon.Promised securely packaged replacement from Amazon came loose in box like the first. Worse, one of the air pillows was deflated. Don't trust Amazon for enterprise quality hardware.

I bought 5 units of the 1T RE3 drive for a RAID-5 set. Works great. Less heat than the black drives it replaced. The RE3 is better suited to RAID applications than standard drives which can drop off the raid set unexpectedly.

Got two of this drives, stripped in RAID 0 for higher performances using Photoshop and Lightroom.It's blazing fast once correctly partionned (keep in mind the scratch size can become quite large when dealing with larges/many files on CS4)I recommend you read DIGGLOYD's blog (http://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-Drive-WesternDigitalRE3.html) before purchasing so that you know what you'll be dealing with.

I purchased 5 of these for a RAID5 setup and wow, they are speedy and they don't make as much noise as I thought they would from reviews on these drives. So far I am impressed.
