Everything works great. Files transfer to the hard drive very fast. The hard drive, one plugged in, was instantly recognized. Only one downfall. If your pc cannot provide enough power, it wont mount. I plugged it into my laptop and it worked perfectly. I plugged it into my desktop and it didn't even detect it. The problem was: The desktop had a old psu with only 300 mah with alot of addons - (GPU etc)

This item was delivered promptly, and the product had not problems. The only thing is that my USB port on my laptop will not accept the device because it says it exceeds the power allowance. Also, I realized that all I wanted was lots of storage space, but this external harddrive came with programs on it that I'm sure are useful, but not what I was looking for.

I have had Passport Essential drives for a long time now, and they are very reliable and durable. Performance is very good. I have even stored virtual machines on these drives and they work flawlessly.

I bought this drive because my laptop has a 60gb hard drive and I needed some extra space so I was hoping to find something in the $50 range but then I saw this and knowing western digital as a name brand I bought it. It came in just a few days and when I looked in the case I saw a solid black hard drive then I opened the case to find a shiny black thing with the equivalent shininess of a mirror! You almost feel like you shouldn't touch it or that they should include a cleaning cloth. It also contains a 6 inch USB cable. When you plug it in for the first time on a Windows XP a window will popup and ask you what you want to do with the drive. I recommend that you run the software provided. It opens up WD Sync which is quite helpful as it is part backup part storage. I selected my files and clicked sync then suddenly I get the message Power Surge on USB port. So I tried it again in a different port and I worked fine. I recommend this drive to anyone who needs backup and storage on the same drive.

I haven't had any problems with my Western Digital My Passport. It's very easy to use and very accessible. I would highly recommend this if you're wanting some extra space.

This is an unreliable piece of hardware.I purchased a 160 GB USB 2.0 external drive... after 4 months, it all of a sudden, unexpectedly stopped working, stopped mounting... I had 96 GB of work in there, now a company is charging me 2,600 $US IF THEY CAN recover the data... the hardware itself malfunctioned.I have been working with computers for over 20 years now... have personally had 14 different macs of all types through the years... and in my company have 30 users... 4 of them have these disks 2 now have similar issues... no EHD is 100% reliable... but these are ridiculous... in any storage capacity.Western Digital should pay me for recovering my data.

Went through 2 of these. The first one was broken and just made a clicking sound and would not show up on the computer. I sent that back and received another new one that worked for about month and a half, that did the same thing. The hard drive which is supposed to hold your important information lost all of my work,pictures,music...EVERYTHING. PLEASE READ CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS ON THE WEB. Western digital will not stand behind their products and dont care about your important information. 2 hard drives and both broken...PLEASE DO NOT BUY WESTERN DIGITAL PORTABLE HARD DRIVES!!!! THEY DO NOT WORK.

This product is ok the biggest disappointment for me is the fact you can only download 4gb at a time. I bought it to back computer would have been much easier if could have backup the whole computer a one time instead of piece mealing it in.

This was definitely a good buy. Setting it up was as easy as plug and go. Finally, I don't have to worry about losing all my files if something happens to my laptop. It's safely backed up on this portable hard drive, which is convenient to carry around, can fit into my pocket.

Works good. It was confusing setting it up and figuring out how it works. It comes with this software to back up your whole computer, so you can basically bring your main computer's hard drive with you wherever you go. However it works much the same as iTunes works, where you sync everything, so if you delete something from your computer then press sync, it will be deleted off the drive. However if you are like me and just want to clear some space on your computer by moving files off of it, all you need to do is treat it like a flash drive and drag files into it's icon on My Computer. Hope this helps. Overall it's a good product, I recommend it. And it's a great price!

I could not figure out how to get this device to work. It kept freezing up with partial page views visible. When the device was frozen, my computer ran very slow. I left it running over night and in the morning it was still frozen. I also had difficulty getting the device to stop. The "Safely Remove Hardware" icon also seemed to be frozen. Very frustrating.

This external hard drive is great. I just had knee replacement surgery and while I was off I put my entire music library of about 150 cd's on it in mp3 format. Now all I have to do to get some new(old)music is plug it into my laptop along with my mp3 player and load it up.

This product does exactly what it is suppose to do with ease.The only thing I would have wanted more from this, was it to come with a more universal password protection program. If you need the extra storage then this is a bargain.

I must say that this HDD works well. My only problem would be that when it falls the casing shifts a bit. I have a fear that one more fall and this thing will break. Otherwise, easy to setup and lightning fast transfer and recovery.

I did tons of research before I bought this drive, I needed it because I wanted to first format my work PC, and also to backup about 10K pictures.Nice thing is that its spacious enough, and it look very sharp, no external power needed, and the transfer speed is great..I moved about 7GB in about 14min or something like that..I bought two of them and both arrived as new never opened..Regarding the black shiney color, Yes you might see ur finger prints on it, but not that easy if you ate something greasy yes :)Its great drive, if you are looking for mid size drive get this one..

The reason why I got this item was because I needed to backup my PS3 data, since I'm upgrading the hard drive on the system. As soon as I opened it, I just plugged it in and that's all. No need to install software or anything. I was surprised at how small and light this drive is and it was nice to have something so simple to use. Perfect for what I needed it. This thing took about 30min to copy about 20G of data which, and I'll be honest, I'm not sure if its good or bad, but there you go.

So I bought this hard drive to transfer songs from my ipod. My ipod doing as it does wasn't holding a charge anymore, but anyway back to the hard drive.. the transfer rate was really fast!!I have been really happy with all of this external bussiness!!So I transfered my songs and have transfered many programs on and off of my external. I use it for my external for my xbox to!!4 thumbs up!!

I have to rate the Passport zero stars. It's a pretty little drive but it doesn't work. I have a WinXP system. The passport drive was not recognized. The light came on but I couldn't hear the drive spin. I read about people getting a dual USB cable for more power so I got one of those. Same result. The light comes on and nothing. (My USB ports work fine for my camera.) I have bought WD internal desktop drives for at least 10 years and no problems. Passport is junk, at least mine is. It has never worked. I live in a foreign country and the shipping would be too expensive to send back. Don't waste your money.

Very happy with the use of this.Able to keep important data with me.Accidentally fell once about 2 feet onto carpet, and still works.Only grouse, the shape of the molding around data port does not allow one of my cables (blackberry) to work properly.

Bought for my husband for christmas. He needed one of these portable harddrives. It's very compact, nice looking with it's piano finish look, and good quality. Great price for this device. Worth every cent.

I received this as a Christmas gift, and none of my laptops will even recognize it. So I wouldn't trust it to back up my files even if I could somehow get it recognized. Now that I'm reading the other one-star reviews, I see that it has power issues. I won't be buying anything from this manufacturer.

I really like the stylistic aspects of this hard drive. It is small enough to take anywhere you want to take it. The drive itself is very easy to use. It does have a significant weakness and that is the fact that it solely depends on the usb port for its power source. My laptop could not actually handle the power that the passport hard drive required and I kept getting an error message about a power surge. I fixed that problem by buying a powered usb hub to plug into my computer and then connected the portable hard drive to my laptop that way. That is my one complaint about the portable hard drive, but it was a simple fix that added about $25 dollars to what I spent on the hard drive itself.
