Purchased my model at a local discout store (Costco) rather than Amazon, but interestingly it was available for exactly the same price as Amazon at the time of the review.INSTALLATION ON WINDOWS XPAlmost no useful instructions. A very skeletal picture diagram was provided, only sort of directing me to connect the provided cable between the drive and my computer USB port. HOWEVER, that in fact turned out to be was all that was needed for installation. The order of connection, whether the computer was turned on or off, software running or not, all trivia that other past device instructions have regulated -- these just didn't seem to matter. I took a deep breath and plugged away with computer already powered on. The remainder was done flawlessly by the drive and its software. It was a bit confusing, however, that other than the usual Windows generated signals to confirm my computer recognized the presence of a new drive and had accepted it, there was no other obvious WD specific confirmation or software that opened.INSTRUCTIONS FOR USAGEThose with enough computer use to have instincts about where to go next, I suspect would travel as I did, to the "My computer" link and see how it was listed. Here a bit more confusion appears because the drive was reported twice, as two separate drives, assigned two different drive letters. ONCE, AS A NEWLY ATTACHED HARD DRIVE (E:): in this location it has one folder that it will not allow you to open and otherwise behaves as a blank drive allowing the addition of files or whatever. SECOND, AS A REMOVABLE DRIVE (F:) which actually contained the additional label that this had something to do with their proprietary software -- "WD SmartWare" -- and apparently corresponds to what their website calls a VIRTUAL CD. Virtual Life forms however are not mentioned on any of the written material accompanying the Passport. The newly established Drives E and F showed they had different amounts of storage available suggesting the proprietary stuff clearly takes up some room (668 versus 697 GB). Thus I clicked on the one labelled WD Smartdrive and their software finally came to life.(Subsequently I found another small tiny sheet of paper separate from the installation diagrams on which there are 3 micro-short paragraphs in English buried among several other languages. These would have instructed me to take the same actions I descibed above, plus provided a web-address for their user's manual. BTW, only after reaching WD online is there acknowledgement that semi-independent VIRTUAL lifeforms and behavior exist on your device.)UPDATING CREATED A BIT MORE CONFUSION -- BUT STILL ULTIMATELY SURVIVABLEOnce their software opens, it immediately invites consideration of updates. Seemed prudent to do so before going to the effort to store or backup data. Thus, I followed the provided link which transported me to the WD SmartWare website and it identified that I needed both firmware and software updates. Fortunately, a bit more detailed instructions are shown on the website than in the packaging. However, when implimented on my laptop they still left gaps. For example, I stopped my virus program as directed. It didn't say to close SmartWare from whence this whole thing was triggered. The FIRMWARE UPDATE installed but glitched somehow briefly on completion. The cursory instructions tell you to disconnect and reconnect your drive (by manually unplugging for 10 seconds). Done. But then the computer gave a Windows-generated error signal from the status bar that I was attempting to add a new device which was not installed properly. Indeed, it was no longer acknowledged either a HardDrive or a RemovableDrive under "My Computer". I did a complete reboot of the computer. The first time Windows intervened, claiming something threatened to damage my computer (a major warning screen with blue background and white "typeset" letters) and the computer shut itself off. I powered it back on and this time it rebooted normally, the Passport was fully accessible. The firmware update finished its authorization or whatever was needed after asking me to provide the password I had previously assigned during initial installation. In contrast, the SOFTWARE UPDATE went smoothly without any further problems. My computer likewise seems to be fine without any abnormal operations or further lockups occurring.BACKUP USING PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE AND STANDARD SETTINGSThis is automated essentially to the simplest point-and-click. Went smoothly without any significant hitches, except that it choose to skip rather than backup my Window's encrypted files (something I have noticed is not unusual, and happens with most other backup software I own except GHOST). It gave very clear notice of this omission, though I don't believe it explained why. However the why was easily recognized by me, because it did clearly list the file names for the 3 that were omitted -- a feature not always present on my other backup softw

Ужасно

Regrettably, this initially nice little drive has eventually proven frustratingly untrustworthy for its intended purpose - back-ups and file transfers. When first purchased a year ago, the Passport 160s seemed wonderfully reliable and dependable for doing both back-ups and transporting sizeable files from computers not sharing a common net. The access was trouble-free and easy, allowing non-geeks the ability to copy and transfer files reliably and easily.Although so far my Passports have never lost a file once loaded, now a year after purchasing two of them, it is not unusual to take numerous attempts for Passport to be recognized while it runs its little inventory program, over and over, incessantly ignoring keystrokes and attempts at intervention. While one can almost always load files, eventually, attempts to get the Passport drive recognized on numerous computers seem to far take longer than transferring files. My Passports have always been transported gently in their padded cases and as far as I know never subjected to knocks or hits of any kind; however, they now regularly behave like an adolescent throwing a temper tantrum. Once a file is loaded, it is generally there on the Passport drive, but it may not be available at the next computer - maddeningly, one can read the file from the Passport drive, but not transfer it... Leaving the only other option which is to load, then "save as..." one file at a time.Regrettably, after purchasing two of these on other recommendation and despite high-hopes, cannot recommend them where reliability is a fundamental criteria.

It worked well while I had it. It was quiet, didn't heat up, and didn't require extra power through an adapter or Y-splitter. But it started making weird whirring and clicking noises today, and wasn't recognized as a USB device. As far as I know, I've never dropped or mistreated it. RIP 2008-2011, Western Digital 160GB Passport.

Based on the reviews I read, I recommended this hard drive (and the 250GB version) to friends of mine. It has been weeks and I am still trying to "fix" both hard drives. They both freeze during backups and Windows, in turn, freezes, too. I read their "documents," which are nine pages of PDF nothingness. I went on WD's support page to find answers and nothing concrete. I tried reformatting and they still freeze. One of the computers I am trying to back up has used 67GB of its (internal) hard drive space. Meanwhile, the external hard drive shows 49GB was backed up. This discrepancy could be due to the non-backup of the operating system itself, but still, an 18GB difference? It should be simple to see what files EXACTLY were backed up via WD's synchronization software. Instead, it shows "My Computer" and that's it; clicking on it does nothing. I am a Mac person and Windows people would say, "Well, you're used to having everything done for you because that's what Mac does." Who the hell wants to work at simply backing up an entire hard drive and seeing what the hell you backed up?! Never buying a WD external hard drive again. It's a terrible experience because I recommended these products to people.UPDATE: The problem was because the hard drive itself does not come with actual backup software. The packaging, especially the wording, is misleading in that regard. I purchased Rebit backup software and that solved the issue.

This is a very nice looking, compact drive with a large storage capacity. I now look at it as a mega USB drive. However, my original reason for wanting one was as a single-PC backup storage for critical files and it just doesn't have the stability for that. The device features a single mini-USB to USB connection (cable included) to provide data transfer and power to the drive. This unfortunately means that the drive can come into scenarios where there isn't enough power coming to it that it can be detected by your PC. This is especially the case if you try to plug it into a USB hub.Plugging mine directly into the PC fixed the problem for me but required me to put my device in an inconvenient location.I like the form factor on this guy and I think the synchronization software would be handy for other people, but I should have purchased a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U10000N instead since it provides power and data connections.

I used to buy stand-alone laptop drives and external hard cases. I would then assemble my own portable external drives. The problem with this is that most of the external drives are not really "fit" for the drives. I'm a clumsy person and sometimes I would fumble on my portables. This caused the drives to bend some of the pins inside the external cases. Thus, I started looking for pre-built external drives.I started looking at 3 brands that I've used: Seagate, Maxtor, and Western Digital. My latest laptop drive was a 120GB Western Digital but I wanted to look for other drives.I checked out HDD reviews and numerous people have commented against Maxtor. I had 3 Maxtor drives and those 3 broke down after 2-3 years. I don't know if that's normal for home use. Then I noticed Seagate was quite expensive. This boils down to Western Digital. As I was looking for Western Digital drives, the salesperson offered me Passport Essential. I looked at it and was surprised at the size. It wasn't as small as my assembled portables but it was small enough and nicely manufactured. In short, it looked slick! With the drive is a software from Wester Digital that allowed syncing of files and encrypting them. It's an impressive software. However, since the files are encrypted, you can't normally browse the files you've synced. For data recover this poses some problem in case I fumble on my drive again. I found another sync software that allowed me to browse the files like a normal explorer. But that's another story. For this product, the packaged software allows you to back up your files and secure it. It's enough for most people.Overall, I'm impressed with Western Digital's My Passport Essential. It does the job of backing up my files and the drive is snugly inside its own external case.

This is an easy to use harddrive that always works (whereas Firelite drives i've had seem to have problems either writing or powering up using a laptop USB port). The only thing i'll add to the many reviews is that this harddrive came with a USB power cable which did not work on my Dell D600 laptop (fairly middle of the line laptop). i called customer service and asked about how to work around this, and they said they have a cable that they'd send out. A week or so later, i got the box, free shipping, no hassles, and it was a USB power cable that used 2 USB ports to power the harddrive but now works perfectly. On my other Dell laptop, i don't need the double-plug solution, but i just wanted to point out the great service and that Firelite drives require a separate AC adapter (that costs money) if your USB port doesn't supply enough power.

Bought this product a little over a year ago, worked fine for a while. After being stored in a desk for a while with no use, it ceased to work...it just makes a clicking sound and isn't recognized by either a MacBook or a Dell Dimension desktop. Bought the cable recommended by the WD website that is supposed to boost power, and it still doesn't work. Luckily I'm not attached to any of the files on there. Product isn't covered by warranty after a certain period. So it goes.

I am not computer genius. But for the regular person who just needs to cleara little space for all those photos and other files to give the computer some much needed speed, this may be the solution. I have loaded all my photos on it and the only thing I have noted is that it is a bit slow. Nothing major to curse about its not like I am dealing with delicate information or stealing info and need the speed. I am just regular old Jane who wants more space and it meets my needs.

I originally tried to use the little flash drives to backup my data but I have so much that using a small 8gig backup was not enough and in the past I used external hard drives but they were of the clunky type. I had no idea that the newer generation of external hard drives were so conveniently small and can back up massive amounts of data. The western digital passport drive I have has only the 160 gig capacity (about 140 gig when you take into consideration space taken up by its own backup/data transfer application installed), but this is more than enough for me to back up everything I need to and still have a lot of room to spare. YOur not limited to using their software installed on the hard drive. you can use any third party backup program (such as roxio easy media creator) or even windows own back up program. which ever you use this hard drive is very compatible..I highly recommend this product...
