I routinely see about 72-73 MB/s sustained reads off of the drives (reading a GB at a time) even with the interface strapped at SATA-I speeds (but note, the drives support and are shipped ready to run at the speedier SATA-II speeds).Pros: Fast, economical, and run fairly cool.Cons: 1 year warranty, could be longer.

Got this 320 GB HDD in the summer of 2008 when the new HDD in my newly built dual-core Biostar computer died. It's worked without a hitch since then as all hard drives should do. It hardly ever gets shut down except during power outages, restarts to complete installation of new software, or a system freeze-up (a very rare event on a Linux box).

I don't want to tell you how much time I wasted assuming that WD couldn't be correct in their claim that it was a breeze to migrate your old Windows to this new drive.My drive came with a CD containing Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools. I just knew that it couldn't be that easy so I went to the net and concocted a witches brew of steps to clone my old Maxtor. It didn't work so I tweaked the recipe and tried again, several times. So, when all else fails, read the directions. I finally did, several times, it sounded so easy I thought I must have missed something. So finally I spent a few minutes loading the software, a minute or two of clicking through easy software, and 3 1/2 hours of waiting for this process to fail too. EUREKA it worked! Damn, I'm smart!I'm writing this from my brand new shiny WD Caviar Blue running my trusty old Windows XP,[...]

I BOUGHT THIS DISK 2 AND A HALF YEAR AGO AND HAVE A REAL GOOD MAKING IN THE PORT PARTS AND IS VERY SILENT AND STANDS SOME HIGH TEMPERATURE. IT STILLS RUNNING 24 HOURS A DAY. I LOVE IT

This drive is in a retail package suitable for display on a store shelf (i.e. it's not an OEM bare drive), so it comes with some extras: SATA data cable, instruction pamphlet in multiple languages, 4 mounting screws, and a CD containing the Data Lifeguard setup and diagnostic software.A SATA hard drive requires two cables: a SATA data cable (included in this package) and a *power* cable (not included in this package).The included data cable is straight on both ends (neither end has a 90-degree bend as some SATA cables do). On the drive end, there is a big plastic nub that helps you get a better grip. As another reviewer mentioned, in a computer where the drive is mounted sideways in the chassis (ex: Gateway 710X), the nub may stick out so far from the back of the drive that it prevents the case from closing. However, it's just soft clear plastic (you can see through it) with no wires inside. You can saw off however much you need to with an Xacto saw or hacksaw or maybe a knife.Older Western Digital drives had two types of POWER connectors on the back: a SATA power connector and a "legacy" rectangular white 4-pin Molex connector. You could use either one.Two of the images associated with this item show this drive with the additional legacy Molex 4-pin power connector on the back. This item does NOT have that power connector.This drive only has a SATA power connector on the back. If your computer power supply only provides you with the old-type Molex power plugs, you will need a Molex-to-SATA power plug converter such as this one: Syba SY-CAB40007 Molex 4 Pin to 2x 15 Pin SATA Power Cable (5.5 Inches).Amazon shows a cable that is "often ordered" with this drive, but it is a data cable. This drive already comes with a data cable. You are more likely to need the power cable adapter described above.The drive is amazingly quiet. I cannot hear it at all over the sounds of my 5 year old WD 160GB drive. It is also amazingly fast.

Sorry to be negative but this drive worked out of the box, then failed on day two. What a headache! I don't know what has happened to WD lately but I've gotten 3 bad drives in a row.

I was dissapointed first by the packing. I ordered two, and both drives were in the same box, with no air bags or bubble wrap! They were floating around the box, unbelievable...On top of that, these do not have the dual power outlets which is what I was wanting.THEY ONLY HAVE SATA POWER as NOT shown in product photography.

I was very happy with the drive's ease of installation and the performance was great. Right up until the time it died. It threw a couple of "disk needs to be checked" alerts from Windows startup, and I took that as my cue to purchase a new drive and did. My system wouldn't boot again to do the replacement and cloning. 16 months from happy camper to totally dead. I will not purchase another Western Digital Caviar drive.

I'm running a little over 2tb worth of HDD space on my PC right now, only expanded after buying a HDD Sony Camcorder and getting into editing and making movies.I purchased this drive mainly as a back up for photos, music, and raw video files needing a place to stay till I get around to editing/deleting them. The install is very straight forward, and was complete in 5-10 minutes.This drive is very quite, almost silent even when at full operating speed (writing a 40-60gb video file, etc)I like having everything organized, and this drive really helped with that, since I can keep everything on it until I know what to do with it...or get time to work with it. As I mentioned its also nice for auto backups of photos and music.I think anybody from an all day computer user to somebody who just needs a place to store their family photos will appreciate the price, size, and quietness of this WD Caviar hard drive.

I got this in hopes that replacing the harddrive would fix my computer's crashing problem. It didn't, but it's still a nicer harddrive than I had- quieter, faster (usually. But then, my computer's a lemon, so i can't be hard on this drive). When I purchased it it came with no cables- some reviews mention cables and even discs and manuals, but it was not the case with mine- i bought a cheap cable off of newegg though, and plugging it all in and getting it set up wasn't hard.

All the good reviews convinced me to buy this particular hard drive. Mistake. It comes with an SATA data cable but warns you - in the installation booklet - that no SATA power cable is supplied. Must be a simple item to buy locally, I thought. Wrong. Office Depot, Staples, Radio Shack, and Best Buys don't sell it. After chasing around and wasting time I ordered one online. Meanwhile, my computer is sitting on its side on the kitchen table with parts hanging.Somebody at Western Digital probably got a promotion on the strength of saving the company $1 on every unit sold. But in my view, shipping out a product such as this without including what's needed to install it is not simply short-sighted, it's unforgivably stupid. It really is just a bare drive in a box. There was no cable included or driver disk. I would have been better off just buying an OEM driver from another online vendor, and saved money doing so.

Nice drive. I'm a video editor/photographer I also Dj part time, I have a irreplacable library of music and promo only's and exclusive remixes etc. plus some finished video projects and tons of photos. All my music was on one drive and all of my photos were on another. I bought this to back both of them up paired with a Rosewill enclosure. Man was I suprised, I thought the drive was broken... it was actually just that quiet you can't barely hear it run at all. It's also quick, I have this version in a My Book, a Maxtor and a Seagate IDE drive in an enclosure and the WD drives are by far quieter, faster and run cooler. The only issue I had was when I plugged the drive in I had to Allocate it and format it... Formatting is no problem, but the computer wouldn't mount the drive and attach a drive letter when plugged in on it's own so I just had to allocate the drive space and assign it a drive letter. No big deal, it only took 4 mins. Overall I recommend and it's a great price!

When my 250GB drive went squirly, I bought this drive based on internet reviews that convinced me that WD was the drive maker to buy. 7200 RPM is Ok for my purposes and the drive replaced was also 7200 RPM. Installation was a breeze. The hard part was file transfered (sorting through 5 years accumulation). Considering the price paid, if I were not retired and a only a casual user, I would suggest buying 2 and setting them up in a RAID configuration. And if I were a business person needing extreme reliability I would have bought 3 for a RAID config. Very pleased with purchase. My first hard drive in 1981 was 10MB, was as big as a carryon suitcase, and cost $3800.00.

After years of having issues with Maxtor drives dying months or weeks before the warranty ended, I switched back to my first love in hard drive manufactures and have not been disappointed.This drive is no different. Even sitting on my desk calendar using a USB cable adapter for transferring my files, the drive is surprisingly quite for its RPM.The software has every scenario of formatting, copying, etc. you need, and I could not be more pleased with a simple HD purchase, especially since I used a gift card for all but $15 of it!
