After reading the horror stories of customers getting bad DOA Western Digital drives lately (and Amazon even pulling the 3 TB drive out of inventory while they "investigate"), I was a bit hesitant. Space was getting very low and the newly purchased Drobo was sitting there empty and waiting, so I ordered the 2.5 TB drive which was still offered with Amazon Prime and it arrived quickly the next day. The two drives arrived packaged in individual cardboard boxes, with supports, inside of a larger box with the standard Amazon air bags. Did not see any visible signs of damage from bouncing around on the UPS truck.For the price, the 2.5 TB was a no-brainer compared to the 3 TB models which as of this writing are significantly more expensive. Hopefully manufacturing capabilities in Thailand improve from the 2011 flooding, prices are still very high compared to a year ago, but what can you do when you need space? After upgrading the Drobo firmware to be able to see drives that are greater than 2 GB, everything is working fine and I have two green lights with my first two 2.5 TB Caviar Greens. Will hold out as long as I can for prices to drop on the 3 TB models before adding some more to the Drobo, and let's hope that Amazon works out the kinks in shipping their bare drives.

First things first: This hard drive is slow. It is not meant to be a main hard drive. I installed this on a personal-built PC, with the main drive being the Crucial m4 (SSD). I installed the OS and all programs on the SSD, and all my iTunes library on the Caviar Green. When opening iTunes, there is a lag (which doesn't happen if the library is on the SSD), which is noticeable, but acceptable. Once the hard drive has woken up, the lag isn't very noticeable. Since it is a green drive, it tries to go to sleep more often than not. If this is going to bother you, buy the Caviar Blue or the Caviar Black.Buy this drive if you need a back-up or a media drive. Do not buy this drive as a primary OS hard drive, instead buy the Blue or the Black.Second thing, this drive is quiet, which is very important. I returned a Seagate drive because of a chirping sound it kept making. This drive is amazingly quiet.I highly recommend the SSD for your main OS drive, and the Caviar Green for the back-up or media drive. You won't regret it.

I built my first computer and every other part works perfectly. I bought a pair of these WD 3tb "greenies" for media library storage. Unfortunately they are not recognized (in BIOS--so you can't even find them in OS). Very finicky devices. I would not recommend. I have returned mine.I am running a Windows 8 computer with brand new X79 chipset. I am not impressed with these HDDs.

I bought it because it was inexpensive, but it seems like a really slow drive. Don't buy this as a main drive. It is OK as a data storage or backup drive though. Otherewise, it seems to work OK and was easy to install and setup.

First two points is due to the fact that I put this in my NAS1. Disk is not running regular filesystem - it is running synology hybrid raid2. NAS has a 30 minute idle timer so the disk spins down and up quite often. This is torture for a disk but it seems to be holding up quite well.3. I bought the 2TB flavor8 months and 1.2TB later this this still runs like a champ, no complaints thus far. If you are worried about data corruption you should be backing up or running redundant drives. Apart from a handful of duds the life of a drive is all about how you use it and considering the torture I put mine through I would consider buying another one when I hit the 2TB mark.

I was concerned that this drive wouldnt work on my 3ware 9650SE controller, which initially it didnt,but after upgrading the firmware to FE9X 4.10.00.026 on the controller, it now see's the drive as 2.72TB.However, after formating the drive, the performance is terrible.From looking it up in forums, the new 4k Advanced format on the drivemakes these incompatible with the 3ware cards. It requires 512byte formatted drives.Be careful, make sure your raid controller can handle "Advanced format" drives

great for storing games and other types of stuff, cool and quiet ensures that it doesnt run hot and saves on power consumption. Ideal for any gamer. 2TB good for couple months until i add another.

i remember seeing people saying on here that theirs died within a few days etc, i've had mine for a few months now and its working great no issues with it at all. maybe they static shocked theirs and fried it?

Very quiet. Running. Using Microsoft XP you get 2TB of primary storage and another 1TB partition using the supplied software.Great buy.

I use this drive to backup my pictures. I plug it into a external eSATA dock and copy over everything before I go to bed. It has been very rugged to the movement and storage so far. Overall good drive with good speeds.

Have had the drive for about a monh and it works like a charm. Bought it to install on an older desktop system that I converted into a media server. Use to keep files on an external 1TB drive and a friend recommended seting up the server. It is great, can access from anywhere and get to all my files, videos, music, etc. I would highly recommend WD products, I use the Western Digital WD TV Live Streaming Media Player, Wi-Fi 1080p on my home network connected to the media server and have an extra TB for future growth. Love it all!

This drive worked great at first, then started with intermittent failures after about a year. The drive becomes unstable and disappears from device manager. I thought it may be a PC side SATA interface issue so I connected the drive to USB and I'm also having reliability problems with it via USB/External. Sometimes it shows access is denied when trying to view files, other times it gets disabled by my controller and is reported as faulty/failing. Because of the type of failures I'm seeing (potential for complete data loss), I have to rate it 1 star. I've had good luck with WD drives in the past, this type of failure is going to steer me away from WD on my next purchase. I just hope I can recover everything from it once the replacement drive comes in.

This 3TB hard drive was purchased for use in my WHS 2011 server PC. I initially performed a quick format, and started to copy files to it. After about 10 minutes of file transfers, WHS reported errors, and stopped the copy action. Chkdsk reported no errors, so I attempted a long format (which I should've done from the beginning). It was still at the 0% mark 4 hours later. Chkdsk then reported multiple problems. Hard Drive Sentinel reported hard drive health to be about 50%. I've started the RMA process with Western Digital, and will report back with my experience. In the mean time, 1 star is all I can report since the hard drive was defective on arrival.

For the money, you cannot find a better hard drive than the EARX.Fast read and write speeds. When combined in a RAID they preform very well.These drives last for years and years.

My 500 GB exterior hard drive died so I was very happy to get this one. I was surprised that I had to buy a new case for it because the one I had was so old that it was not compatible with the connecting wires on this drive. I didn't realize that until I tried to switch them.So make sure that you have the correct connections for this drive--it is SATA III which is also called SATA 6 Gbps (Gigbits per second, not Gigabytes, which is abbreviated GB not Gb. The difference is a factor of 8.) If this is confusing, then get someone to help you order the right case.It doesn't get as hot as the old hard drive (which was made by Hitachi) and it is very quiet. It seems to be working very well and it is supposed to be faster and to use less electricity. I guess since it doesn't get as hot that it is using less electricity but I can't tell if it is faster or not. Honestly, it seems to be the same speed as my old hard drive which was fast enough not to cause any problems. It did take a long time to re-format this drive but I didn't time it.2 TB is a lot of space for a hard drive but an interesting fact is that because of differing terminology, you don't really get 2 TB--the actual usable space is 1,863 GB. 2 TB is 2,000 GB so this drive is "short" 137 GB. It is a small percentage but my first computer only had 2.3 GB total, to put it in perspective in terms of raw numbers.This hard drive doesn't look like the first photo, it looks like the second photo. The first photo is what it looks like without the cover but of course you can't remove the cover because it must be kept free of dust.As far as pricing, the cost of hard drives has come down a lot. I paid almost twice as much for my old one as this one costs and it only had 1/4 of the space which means it costs about 1/8 as much on an equivalent basis per GB.

I purchased 4 of these and have had to return 3 already. Not from Amazon, but rather NewEgg. I recommend getting a true review and or spend the extra bucks to a reliable drive.

All drives will eventually fail, the question is just how long will it take.I used to love WD hard disks, but it appears that I was just mistaken for being a brand new customer with them. Having bought more than 4 drives over different time frames during the last 2 years, now ALL of them have decreased health and two are really close to dying. I recommend them for people that don't really care about their data. Are they cheap? Yes. And if everything that was cheap was good, we would probably never see other products on the market.I'm giving a try with Hitachi.. I'm not saying that they are good, they could be the worse thing ever, but right now seems to be the most reliable option.

I bought this HD a while back when it was cheaper and since then I have had no problems with it. I would buy another one if only the price went down closer to when I bought it before. Its reliable and has yet to cause any errors. I use it to store all my media and its great so far for using in a network setting. 3 PC can access the HD and it works flawlessly. Recommend if you need the storage space for media.

I received my Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARX within two days of ordering it. I am using it in my Thermaltake Max 5G with active cooling, which I also bought through Amazon. The WD 2T drive started up immediately, accepted the drivers, which my Windows 7 software loaded into it, and I immediately formatted the new 2TB hard drive using my Windows 7 software by right clicking on "Computer," then clicking on "Manage" and then "Disk Management." So far I am extremely happy with the new Western Digital 2TB hard drive. Speed is not of concern to me since the Thermaltake Max 5G uses a USB 3 interface to the computers I hook to it for backup. Earlier, I had also bought a 2TB WD "My Book Live" Home Network Drive through Amazon, which I use for network backups of all my three house computers, two Windows 7s and one Visa Computer. The Vista laptop computer uses the wireless interface to "My Book Live." The WD My Book Live is also working great!

There's obviously no quality control on this drive, as one of the two I ordered was dead out of the box. In contrast, I have five WD Black 1TB & 2TB drives, with the first purchased in 2008, with no failures.

Works perfectly in Gen 2 or newer DROBO boxes. I have 4 boxes full of WD 2TB & 3TB drives and have only lost 2 (2TB) drives in 4 years of constant running.

WD Green drives are designed for few writes and many reads. The drive is good for serving media files, backups, installation files, disk images, etc. You should avoid using WD Green drives for heavy writing activities such as applications, databases, and media recording / editing.N.B. I purchased the 3 TB drive which is compatible with my SATA to USB adapter under Windows 7, but NOT under Linux. Since the long term mount is a SATA controller, this is only a partial annoyance.

Great HD for the PC......BUT be careful if you use buy it for a media system like Pivos......most firmware outside a PC won't handle the addressing even if you partition it....so check the blogs....otherwise....it is great

I store numerous MP3s on double sets of external drives. After upgrading to USB 3.0, I purchased 2 of these WD 2.0TB drives, and a pair of 1.5TB WD drives. I had to return BOTH of the 2.0TB drives to Amazon for a refund. Neither one was stable in maintaining the FAT table. Both drives were formatted and checked for sector errors prior to copying data, so I started out fresh. Both drives, within 1-2 days started displaying FAT table errors, which required running Windows 7 Disk tools to correct the errors. After a few go-rounds, I decided to return the drives, and Amazon quickly and without issue refunded the purchase. I don't know if these drives were subject to poor quality control, but they aren't worth the trouble. You will see that other reviewers have had the same problems. Regarding the 1.5TB drives I purchased at the same time, one of them is kind of flakey with the same type of problem, and the other drive is just fine. I've just reformatted and checked the one drive with issues, and am copying data back to it again. If it still acts up, back it goes as well.I don't know what the problem is with these Green drives from WD, I've used other external USB drives for years from WD with no problem. I did mount these drives in a Unitek USB 3.0 dual docking station. My older WD 2.0TB drives (which were enclosed in USB 2.0 mountings) were removed and placed in the Unitek docking stations with no problems at all, so I don't think it has anything to do with the docking stations -- the drives are just not up to par. Bypass these and purchase something else my friends...

I love Western Digital Drives and have purchased almost a dozen over the past 2 years and have always had good luck with them. However it seems the floods might have weakened WD's Quality Control. I purchased two of these drives for my Drobo S. I have another Drobo S running 4 WD20EARS with no problems. I installed two of these drives into my second Drobo S and after 1 min Drobo threw out one of them. I connected it to a PC and ran a SMART check to discover it already had 2 reallocated sectors. It seems Drobo has a low tolerance for SMART errors, which is a good thing. I returned the drive to AMAZON and received a replacement. The replacement has been working great for over a week now. I was surprised as this was the first Western Digital drive I have owned to be failed by Drobo. I have 6 year old WD drives that still run great and have ZERO SMART errors of any kind. I hope this is not a sign of things to come from WD.

I purchased a "Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 ProBox 8 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure" and eight of these "Western Digital Caviar Green 3 TB Sata III Cache Bare/OEM Desktop Hard Drive - WD30EZRX" work perfectly with it. So, if you need 24 TB of storage, this is a great buy - Both From Amazon. I Thank You Very Much For Your Services!
