"Amazon Has Certified That This Packaging Is Frustration-Free"-- My frustration started with the package and escalated both when I opened it and when I attempted to use the drive. It came in the anti-static standard bag with an invoice wrapped around it, that's it, nothing else. No protective bubbles, no padding, just a box and a drive. When I plugged it in all I heard was clicking, no spinning, it was the faint sound of a DOA drive. Was unable to partition it, view it in disk manager, or anything. Very disappointing. Not blaming this on the drive either, likely poor packaging is the reason for failure. Even if the drive had worked, I'd of given it a one simply due to the poor decision of how to package this sensitive electronic equipment.

I've had the WD7500AADS for about a month now, installed in an Icy Dock external firewire/USB enclosure. The drive serves as the Time Machine backup of my office computer, so it performs automatic backups multiple times per day. So far, it is working flawlessly. It replaces a 500GB Seagate 7200.11 drive, and it is so much quieter and cooler than the Seagate that I can hardly believe it. Really an excellent drive, and one to get if you're concerned about the block size issue on the newer Caviar Green EARS drives.

I have owned several brands of hard drive int he past including Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital and Hitachi. The only ones I have never had a problem with are Western Digital and for the last five years that is the only hard drives I have used in all my PCs. They are reliable, offer good performance and are reasonably priced. This one has gone into the media player to play my DVD collection from the hard disk. Highly recommend Western Digital brand hard disks.

As to the comments of poor packaging, my drive arrive today packaged in a large over-pack box with crushed brown paper surrounding a smaller inner box. The inner box was custom fitted for the drive with much room around the drive and with fitted inner restraints to keep the drive in position in the inner box. The drive was encased in the usual anti-static plastic envelope. If your drive is packaged as mine was you should have no worries.Note: If your package is delivered to your doorstep and has sat out in the cold for a while (as mine had), the drive also will, of course, be cold. So, BEFORE YOU OPEN THE ANTI-STATIC BAG, allow the drive to come to room temperature. Otherwise you should expect moisture to condense on the drive and even though it is a sealed drive unit, it's still better to allow everything to stabilize to room temp and not take a chance with moisture condensing on it. Just give it an hour or two and it should be fine.

I never thought I'd write a review about the packaging, but this was really really a poor packing job. The reviews that say that the packaging has been fixed no longer seems to be true. The bare drive arrived loose in a box with no cushion and was left on my doorstep in the rain. Amazon really needs to reexamine how it packages fragile tech components such as this and its delivery policies with its shippers.I can't believe that a company like Amazon can ship drives like this so haphazardly. I have my fingers crossed that this drive will actually last and not fail because of the poor shipping policies of Amazon. As a prime member, I expect some thought and care to ensuring a safe delivery. Amazon needs to remedy this situation QUICKLY and PUBLICLY.

I purchased this HD because I was running out of storage capacity for my digital videos. I have some experience putting together computers, so this was a rather simple plug & play experience. Since buying it I have had no problems at all, so I couldn't really comment on service/support as it wasn't needed. Although the item shipped quickly and arrived undamaged, I was a little upset at the lack of packing materials used to protect such a sensitive item.

This is an excellent hard drive with a vast amount of space to store pictures and videos. The SATA connections were easy to make and the drive was very easy to install in my external eSATA enclosure. Even though it's a "green" drive and spins slower than other drives, I have not noticed that it's slow to respond and for external data storage, it provides an ideal solution to my storage needs.This drive was provided from a supplier, not shipped by Amazon.com and the packaging of this drive by the outside supplier was excellent. They properly surrounded the drive on all six sides with bubble wrap in the packing box. Amazon.com needs to take some lessons from this supplier in how to properly package a hard drive.It's a great drive, excellent deal, I definitely would deal with this supplier again.

Until now I've been buying the WD Caviar Green 750GB version of this drive. Now this drive is the price-point sweet spot. I have 2 750GB and one 1.5TB drive in my Windows Home Server machine. It is installed hooked up to a SATA PCI card. WHS recognized the drive right away and within a few minutes it was up and running. The drive runs cool and quiet as advertised. I've had one drive running for over a year, another one for six months and this one for about 1 month. My WHS machine is up 24/7 and serves media as well as backing up all the PCs/laptops in the house. If I need another drive soon this will be the one I get.So far so good knock on wood.

I have never had issues like this in the past with western digital drives. I have 4 raptor drives and wanted one of these for media storage and backup. It was a big mistake. My first drive was Dead on Arrival. I got it RMA'd and got the replacement. The replacement worked but I was seeing 1MB/sec writes speeds with the drive. It took me about 20 hours to transfer 136GB of data from one internal drive to this one. A few days later windows is reporting this drive as about to fail and that I should backup immediately. I assume this is the SMART technology. I'm shipping this unit back and getting a 1MB Black (not green) drive so I can hopefully have some better luck.

In the context that I'm using it, this is a perfect drive. I now have five of these sitting in a home-built server running Ubuntu 9.04, all in a software (mdadm) RAID array with lvm across the top for partitioning/volume management, and I couldn't be happier. They're low power, which perfectly accents my 24/7 online headless server, and have yet to cause any issues whatsoever. I have a decently cooled case--an Antec 300--and they stay reasonably cool, averaging about 33 degrees Celsius. I've also enabled TLER on each of the drives using the easily obtainable Western Digital WDTLER utility so as to avoid any potential issues with use in a RAID array; this is a feature you pay big bucks for in an "enterprise" level drive.A great performer, and perfect for a home server. Highly recommended.

REJECT all packages lacking PADDING ON ALL SIX BOX SURFACES meeting or exceeding UPS standards. I have ZERO confidence in electronics received in any other condition. I continue to exchange the item until amazon can be bothered to correctly package it. I have recently started a habit of calling customer service prior to an order, placing the order, and giving the rep the order number to ENSURE the item is PROPERLY packed in the box.Amazon is NO DEAL WHATSOEVER when shipping practices endanger reliability/longevity of merchandise.

So far, I've filled it up to about 2/3rds it's capacity with a customer's data...no problems after several days of use. It's impressively quiet. I work with a lot of hard drives (I'm an in-home PC tech) so I know how loud HDDs usually are...and I was impressed by this one.

This drive is a good choice if you need just single disk operation. It is not a good choice if you need it to be part of a RAID set as the latest revisions removed support for TLER. The WD15EADS previously supported TLER, making it a good choice for a low cost RAID drive but WD wants you to purchase their "RAID-capable" RE2 drives for a significantly higher cost instead so they removed TLER support. The Samsung HD154UI does support TLER (technically CCTL, Samsung's version of TLER) so anyone who is interested in RAID should look at that drive instead.

The WD 1.5TB Green drive seems to be working fine.I just hope down the line, it doesn't fail because of the packaging during shipping. It was packaged like a pin ball in a box; to make matters worse, our mailman dropped it over a 5ft fence while we were not home. Since it is "Bulk/OEM" packaging, there is nothing but a thin layer of antistatic film covering it. Amazon's standard plastic air bags won't protect this product. A simple bubble wrap that costs what-a few pennies-would work a lot better, protect the hard drive from hard impacts, and save $ for amazon from future returns due to failed harddrives. Heck, even the wrapping they used to put books in would've been nice. That's why I rated only 4 stars; otherwise, it would've been 5 stars.

Purchased 2 of these drives to serve in a RAID array in July, 2009. In October, both failed nearly simultaneously. Received warranty replacements from Western Digital (they charged my credit card for shipping). Now one of the drives has failed again (March, 2010). With this kind of reliability, I would look elsewhere.

My only current issue with this product is the manner in which it was shipped by Amazon. I was shocked by the lack of protection provided to this order. It's a hard drive, and it's just put in a box with the anti-static bag. No bubble wrap? Peanuts? The shipping is discounted, I know, but certain items deserve a little bit more than corrugated cardboard. Hopefully it received minimal shock during shipment, which the box attests to (unlike my other delivery from Amazon). I'm not terribly worried, since most damage is done while they run if jostled, but come on.

I got this drive to add to my HP Media Vault 2120.The nice thing here is that Amazon has the "D" version of this drive for the same price as the "C" version. WD7500AADS has 32 MB of cache where the WD7500AACS only has 16 MB of cache.I purchased the WD7500AACS to replace the original drive in the media vault and with the 2 drives, I have 1.3 GB of space. Woohoo!!The drive seems to be quite reliable as the NAS is up and running all the time and because the drives are running all the time, it was nice to get the "Green" line that produces less heat. Even after hours of running the drives, they are still cool to the touch. This is important as most computer hardware is running hotter then ever and to minimize the heat in your system, you should use as much green devices as possible.I have had both versions of the 750 Caviar Green HDDs and I am definitely a fan. Fast access seek time, lower power comsumption and lower temperatures. What is not to like?Oh.. one extra note. Western Digital's HDD utilities do not work on Vista. Come on WD, Seagate has had their DiscWizard tool working on Vista for years now. We are almost on Win7. Get a new version of the utilities out.

contrary to the reviews, this package wa perfect- well packed and the drive holder fit the box perfectly, protecting it in shipment. The drive once initiated and formatted works perfectly and has been running 24/7, is very quiet and cool running. I bought this for use in my small form factor desktop. I know its not for gamers but it suites my everday computing as if it were made for it(btw it WAS)I run Vista and have used this to replace my DEAD Seagate OEM(after only 13 months) HD. As is the norm the Seagate I got was the 500gb drive that was fraught with fixes and failures( as per the DELL site) They(DELL) even sent me without asking - a firmware disk upgrade to prevent hangs!

Like other users complained it was shipped with no protection at all. Imagine ordering a book, that's exactly how this harddrive was shipped. Not even the plastic that holds it down when you fold it. I can only imagine what this did to the life expectancy of this drive.FYI: Does not work with External USB enclosures/docks. Must go eSATA or internal SATA.

I have plugged the drive into a removable USB case for backups. It is working great. I am interested to see if it will last as long as all my other WD drives have - which is now going on many years. This will function as a backup drive.

I purchased four of these units for installation in my new Digital Robotics "Drobo" data storage unit. This model HDD was recommended by DR technical support. In the past five weeks three of the drives have functioned perfectly. However, one unit failed two weeks after first being installed. I was lucky. It was within the thirty day Amazon warranty period and customer service replaced it immediately including paying the shipping and handling costs for the return of the defective HDD. Reading the reviews on this website have caused me to conclude that I would not have had the same extremely positive experience if I had to deal with Western Digital technical support. Kudos to the Amazon team!

I was apprehensive in ordering this because of the reviews mentioning inadequate packaging. However, mine arrived packed very well in a separate box within a larger box containing other items I had ordered. Inside the drive box it had plastic anchors at both ends. So I was happy with it.The drive itself is great. Working well. About 25% faster than a similar "green" 1TB drive I got about 16 months ago. Now has three platters instead of 4. Runs quiet and cool. Good capacity for the price. Don't use it as your operating drive (I have an SSD for that), but for secondary or bulk server purposes it can't be beat.

I bought one of these from [...]. I also bought a 1.5TB seagate drive from my local fry's, I put both drives in my NAS setup as a RAID1 (luckily). The WD drive failed after 3 months of very light work. I will never buy a WD drive again.

I purchased two of these drives to use in a RAID array Dlink 321 NAS. They have been working flawlessly for this application.I normally use Samsung drives but this size wasn't available when I was building the NAS. These drives have proven to be just as reliable and quite as the Samsung's I usually prefer.

I have Seagate and Hitachi drives, but this WD Green model is the champion in silence.Also it runs colder than the other brands, so it makes suitable for using on enclosures without fan,or minimize fan usage.I found that the 1.5Tb version has currently the cheapest relative Cost/Gbyte ratio, much better than the 2Tb version,so it's a better deal.Pros: cheapest Cost/Gbyte ratio, silent, runs cold, green (less energy)Cons: I couldn't find any yet - performance is worst than the 7200K models, but it doesn't make any difference for me as I use it as backup drive inside a Drobo

This may be a 5400RPM drive, but with a 32MB cache, it's still quicker than older 7200RPM drives. Just google this drive for reviews, and you'll see that.My Drive install was quick and easy. Set it up in Windows, and I backed up 1300GB of files from my 4 other hard drives to this single drive. Sustained transfer rate going from 3 drives simultaneously to the new 1.5TB Caviar Green was ~70MB/s. I'll try to update this review after a while to report on how well it works long-term.UPDATE: And long term, it seems to suck. My PC randomly locks up thanks to this drive. This has gotten worse and worse as I've had the drive. I thought I had bad memory, but that didn't help. I thought I had a bad motherboard, but that didn't help. Nope. It's this hard drive.

i just got this hard drive. guess what. DOA It was Dead on Arrival. I heard clicking sounds and now I have to send it back. All this due to their lack of safe packaging. I mean cmon, this is a computer hard drive we're talking about not some books. What were they thinking with their weak packaging? I know people want to make profit and cut down costs but this is too much.

Purchased two of these drives and had no problems with installation other than did not realize they did not come with any cables. I had to order them seperately so it took a while before I could actually use them..They arrived fine and worked right away, I didn't have any issues with shipping like the other reviewer's. They were packed well in a suspended packaging on either side of the box to absorb shock.Great hard drives and plenty of space now!I've always used Western Digital drives and have never been let down.

I've had the drive for a couple of weeks and it seems to be working fine.The reason that I gave it 4 stars is because it comes with NO cables, screws, or installation info. Just a drive in a box. So be sure to order an SATA cable or install kit with your order.This drive may not be a good choice for the non-techie, Unless you're careful, and willing to pre-research install methods.If your installing on a Windows XP machine, this official WD link may help.[...]

I have always found Western Digital hard drives to be reliable but the manner in which I received my latest purchase from Amazon was inexcusable. The hard drive was shipped completely loose in a box with no protective packaging whatsoever. It rattled around inside the box. It was shipped via USPS and undoubtedly rattled around during shipment. I can no longer recommend purchasing a hard drive from Amazon because of this.

I bought a pair of Caviar green to assemble a raid 0 over Windows 7. Both was permitted to go through very easily and without flaws. The functionality of these HD was smooth, very quiet and very pleasant. It works for 1 month right now, without any failure.Good job WD!

The drive is great, but Amazon still uses very bad packing as of 2009-11-16. I got 2, and they came in a single big box, full of plastic air cushions, but - oh brainlessness - the disks were directly in contact with the bottom of the box, receiving all the impact. I also got a 1 Tb model, which was properly packaged, but these were packed like if they were books. Common, amazon, you know how to do it, please pay attention to sensitive items like these.

I purchased 3 of these drives to replace 500G internals in my Mac Pro. Installation took 5 min and formatting was a breeze. They have increased performance and storage capacity. Best price for the drives anywhere. Shipped bear bones, have good warranty. Would buy this again.

Have 3 of these running 24/7 without an issue. Have tons of high definition movies on these and they handle them great. Not sure about the power rating on these. If you are looking at these for storage of movies etc, don't need to look further at these prices. Still waiting for the SSD to drop in prices, until then guess we need to use these :).

I installed this drive in my Shuttle (HTPC) and the computer noise has dropped significantly. If the price dropped to $90 like it was during Christmas time, I would buy another (or two).

This thing is whisper quiet, no, probably quieter that that. Runs real cool, capacity is magnicifent. Speed good. I'm in heaven. I'm just about 2 weeks into using it however, hope I'll still be feeling the same way a year from now.

The drive went right in and in no time was taking over duties for my media drive (my main drive was clicking, so I replaced it with one of my media drives and this new one is taking over for the two previous media drives). Quiet and stable. This is quite an upgrade in capacity for me, so I'm loving all the empty drive space, though I'm sure I'll fill it up in no time.

Drive so far seems fine but it's packaged in a small box with a tiny bit of popped bubblewrap. I really don't see how Amazon thinks that this is actually protecting the drive.Amazon needs to figure out how to properly package these things.

This is a great drive, but the 7200 RPM drives from Seagate (Barracuda) still outperform the WD green drives hands down. Western Digital is trying to de-emphasize the speed by not listing the RPMs and actually stating the rotational speed as "Intellipower" on their spec sheets. Just try to find an RPM listing on any vendor's site. It's 5400 RPM. There, maybe someone doing a Google search will actually find out the information now.Look at the benchmarks found at [...] and you will see they perform well, but they're not the fastest.

It's quiet, doesn't generate too much heat, and is fast enough for my HTPC. It gives me 1397GB of space and it simply works. There is nothing more I need from a hard drive.

Because it is 1.5 TB this drive won't work with older adapters that only accept up to 1 TB. But other than that this drive is perfect and works excellent.

I purchased two of these drives for use in a Drobo back-up system. I'm using a Mac running OSX 10.6. I also have a 750 GB WD hard drive in the Drobo.It took about 96 hours for the Drobo/WD15EADS to back up about 1.3 TB of data using Time Machine software.The good and the bad:It took a very long time to make the original back-up. I'm not really sure why. Was it the speed of the Drobo, the speed of the HD's or a combination of both?After the original back-up was complete, subsequent back-ups are very fast (less data to back-up).I have always preferred WD hard drives, and am pleased with the two WD15EADS's and the Drobo.

After comparing the reviews of all the 1TB, 1.5TB, and 2TB drives to put in my new Media Server, this one won out. Four reasons for picking it:1) best price/performance at $80 per TB.2) absolutely the quietest and lowest temperature unit3) best long term user reviews4) could get it directly from Amazon.I got two of these, dropped them in my server box and couldn't tell from the heat or noise that they were there. Very quiet, never seem to get hot.Highly recommended.
