Summary-------This is a very affordable powerline extended. It seems to work well across circuits with different kinds of wiring. When in range wifi performance is good but range is quite limited. Setup can be incredibly frustrating if you desire some control over IP address and device configuration.Plug in the PA211 into a wall socket in the local location and connect the LAN cable. Otherwise just plug in the WPA-281 in a wall socket in the remote location. If you're luck (like some other reviewers) it'll have the default 192.168.1.1 IP address with admin/admin password. If not you'll need to do a network scan using scan tools or the powerline scan or powerline utility programs from TP-Link.It's not at all clear how either device assigns itself an IP address or whether and how they make use of existing DHCP servers on the network. The kit I'm reviewing comes with a TL-WPA281 which includes wifi and a TL-PA211 without wifi. Here's some basic terminology that TP-Link uses that will make things easier to understand:"Local" - the device that's connected to your LAN via an ethernet cable. It makes most sense for this to be the TL-PA211 and to leave the wifi enabled TL-WPA281 for the remote end"Remote" - the device that is not connected to your LAN but relies on the powerlines. Makes most sense for this to be the TL-WPA281 since it has wifi and can give you a new network in a new locationInitial Setup-------------- I plugged the PA211 into my router and into the wall outlet- I plugged the WPA281 into a wall outlet- It all worked! That was it.Initial Observations--------------------- No security on the new wifi network created by the WPA281. SSID is broadcast- Default password on WPA281 (user ID/PWD: admin/admin)- Can't find either device on the network- Powerline adapter will work *across* electrical circuits which is great. The wiring does not have to share a neutral or anything. Which is great! I plugged one device into a a circuit with arc fault interruptor (no shared neutral) and the other end into an old knob and tube circuit. I was very surprised it workedFurther Observations and experiments------------------------------------TL-WPA281- As I mentioned before, this is the 'remote' device. It is accessible via web GUI- It supports b/g/n wifi and it does not have a DHCP server. It relies on the one on your main router. So when it is not part of a powerline network it will not allow devices to connect- On my network it gave itself a different IP Address Everytime in the range of my network. It did not use my DHCP Server. That was really annoying. When connected locally to a PC it also gives itself a different IP address everytime (in my case in the 169.254.xx.yy) range. Again, very annoying. I tried setting the IP address in the GUI, reinstalling the firmware and factory reset but that did not work. I used Google Chrome browser.- For need to rely on either the "Powerline Scan" or "Powerline Utility" programs available on TP-Link's website. Either one of those will give you the IP address of the WPA281. Or you can use a network scan utility.- It supports Wifi Protected Setup (WPS) which is enabled by default. The wifi status LED also acts like a WPS button- Wireless range is mediocre (20-30 ft) but performance is good otherwiseTL-PA211- This is the 'local' device. It cannot be accessed via a web GUI. Only through the Powerline Utility program.- You can upgrade the firmware using the "PowerLine Utility" program. There are two firmware files needed. My version came with the latest but I reinstalled the firmware and reset it anyway because I was experiencing problems.- It connected to my network (via the ethernet cable) without using my DHCP server. I scanned and sniffed packets and couldn't figure out what it's IP address was (if it had one). I didn't like that but didn't want to waste my time with further investigation.- I was never able to connect to it via a web interfaceUtility Programs----------------There are three utility programs available on TP-Link's website. I never bothered with the included mini-CD because they tend to be out-of-date. Here are the three programs and a brief description: - powerline scan - scans for remote devices only. whether they are connected directly to your PC or on the network. So this would be to find the IP address for the WPA281 - powerline utility - remote device, advanced qos settings, update local device firmware - powerline utility setup - could not get it to work on Windows 8 64-bit. Kept crashing. even in compatibility mode. So I gave up.

My router is downstairs at one end of the house, and its signal doesn't reach the upstairs bedrooms. I thought I'd give this TP-Link a try to see if it would allow me to use our Mac laptops upstairs. If you look at the Quick Installation Guide, you see the usual pictograms and a sparsely-worded set of instructions. Following the instructions, I first plugged the smaller, base unit into the electrical outlet by my router and connected it via to the router via the included ethernet cable. (Note that the instructions say you must plug the base unit into the wall outlet, not into a power strip. I was able to plug the unit into the bottom outlet and still use the top outlet.)The next step is to take the larger unit, the adapter, and plug it into an outlet in the area where you want to have the network signal extent to. Here's where things got a little murky for me. The Guide shows that in this step, you're supposed to use a second included ethernet cable to connect the adapter to the device you want to use in that remote location. The Guide illustrates this by showing as examples, a desktop computer and a gaming console, each one connected to the adapter with the internet cable. I wanted to use my Macbook Air in the remote location. Whoops. It doesn't have an ethernet outlet. So I grabbed an older Macbook that does have an ethernet outlet and connected it to the adapter with the ethernet cable. The next step was to go down to the base unit, press a button on the bottom of the unit and then, within two minutes, do the same with the adapter. So I did that. (Note that this "button" on the base unit is more like a tiny tab than a button.) Back upstairs, the lights went green on the adapter, indicating that I had power and was connected to the network.I clicked the WiFi icon on the Macbook and saw the TP-Link listed and the checkmark indicating that I was connected via the TP-Link. I surfed through a few websites to be sure I was connected and I was. It was unclear to me from the instructions whether I needed to keep the laptop connected to the adapter via the ethernet cable, so I disconnected it to see what would happen. I found, happily, that I was still able to get internet access via the TP-Link selection. That being the case, my next step was to see if my Macbook Air could "find" the TP-Link. Again, happily it did and I can now use either laptop upstairs. All this leaves me wondering why the instructions don't say anything helpful about needing or not needing the ethernet cable to get set up.But wait, there's more. At this point, if you click on the wireless icon on your computer, you'll see that there's no little lock icon next to the TP-Link. In other words, presumably this is not secure and you could have others piggybacking your network. I say "presumably" because this isn't explained in the instructions either. This product comes with a mini-CD, but that was of no help to me, since I can't put that in my Macbooks. The Guide describes how to add security in Windows, but not in Mac---though the Product Features list does say Mac. So, off to the TP-Link website, where I found FAQs. They explained how to secure the extended network, but again in a pretty darned murky way. Frankly, there are reviewers of this product here on Amazon who explain it much better. My three-star review is a compromise between the excellent performance of the product and the lousy communication about it. The product description page does a terrible job of explaining what the product is and how it works and adds to the confusion with the "Powerline Comparison Chart." You pretty much have to take an educated guess as to how the the product works, which is not something I like doing with electronics. The printed materials that come with the product are only slightly better. You can follow the directions and they work, but they are unclear in places, as I describe above, and they really fall down on the job when it comes to security for Macs. If you're very tech savvy, this won't be a problem, but if you're not, or you're only middling tech-y, that could be an issue.

I already have a Belkin network kit that transfers data through your household powerline and was curious to see how the TP-Link compares. This TP-Link kit comes with the following components.1x Extender1x Adapter2x short Ethernet cablesYou basically hook up the extender to your internet router and plug it into an AC socket directly in the wall. Plug in the Adapter into the wall AC socket in another location that shares the same electric supply, and hook the adapter to your device you want networked and voila. The TP-Link starter kit offers some extra functionality over the Belkin. The wireless network extender also doubles as a wireless hub. However, it has to connect to my router which is already wireless in order to get the initial internet connection. So if I want to have a wireless hotspot in my garage I still need to purchase another extender unit to plug in the AC socket over there. The TP-Link can be accessed and configured the same way as most routers. It has a network address 192.168.1.1 which lets you access all the functions, including setting up WEP, network keys, encryption and passwords to secure the system. All of which worked fine. My router is accessed a similar way but uses the 192.168.1.254 address. But there weren't any conflicts which was quite nice.I then plugged the powerline adapter in the living room to access my Western Digital live media hub. (1TB media storage hub and player for the TV and mobile devices in the house). The network worked first time and having copied some video over from my desktop using the belkin powerline network earlier I thought I would do the same with the TP link.SPEED TEST:Comparison against Belkins powerline network kitThe Belkin managed 2-3 megabytes per second transfersThe TP-Link managed 3 - 4.5 megabytes per second transfers. Those are across the exact same distance with all the same CAT 5 ethernet cables at each end. So the TP-Link is the winner offering about 25-50% speed boost.ProsSo the TP Link is the winner. And it gives you the opportunity to add or extend the wireless connectivity in the house is great. You can quickly add more extenders or adapters to extend your network further.ConsThe only downside is that the extender only has one wired Ethernet output socket. Would be nice if there were two or three. The Belkin starter kit comes with three outputs but doesn't support wireless. You have to use a wall AC outlet. Not a surge protector power strip/extension which will not be able to transfer the data signal.CONCLUSIONThis is a great product. The units are smaller than the competition. It's also white-faced which may suit many homes better. Converting a purely wired router to wireless is a breeze. You can purchase more extender units to extend your wireless network.

We have a PowerMac upstairs for the little kids to play games on. They like to play some online games and play abcmouse. It makes it easier to have a dedicated computer for them. It also helps to have it upstairs when the teenagers need more than one or two devices connected. It's so easy to set this up. Both sides need to be plugged in wall outlets. One Ethernet cable needs to be connected to the router and then to the larger of the two adapters and plugged into a wall outlet - not a power strip. That puts the internet connection through the electrical system. Then the other side, the smaller adapter, is put where you would like the internet connection. Then use the ethernet cable on the other end to plug in the device that needs internet. This can also be used wirelessly but some older devices do not have that option. The pictures probably make this much easier to follow. It takes more time to unwrap the package than it does to set it up.These are incredibly useful little devices. I have had several kinds of adapters like this for connections that need to be stable and are otherwise out of reach.

I needed to get better wireless coverage in my 2nd floor bonus room, as my wireless router is on the first floor on the other side of my house. I originally looked into a wireless extender/repeater for upstairs when I noticed these powerline adapters (one with Wireless). I figured I can have the best of both worlds by hardwiring my blu-ray player and having great wireless coverage too. This product worked perfectly. I was skeptical about using the electrical wiring, but I'm sold now. It was very easy to set these up...it basically creates another wireless network to connect to, and you can set a password to keep it secure (I used the same password as my wireless router). I plugged the wireless adapter into the electrical outlet behind my blu-ray player & tv in the bonus room. I tried both wireless and wired with my blu-ray, and the streaming apps worked great either way. The wired connection is a little faster, so I'm using it. The kit came with the ethernet cables for each adapter. Now I can use my laptop, kindle, etc wirelessly in that room and get solid streaming through the wired connection on the blu-ray.For a little more than the cost of a wireless repeater or the standard powerline adapter kits, you can get both worlds with this. I recommend it.
