had to change my review to one star. I received a replacement after this one failed, and it too failed after ten minutes of playing. I am incredibly disappointed by the quality control of these guitars

right off the bat. Horrible set up out of the box. Neck felt nice chunky C with more thickness at upper frets.
Had dull frets . So except to do or pay for a setup to get it playing right .
I returned this and bought the Mustang instead which out of the box was already set up fine. Both made in
Indonesia so who knows why. I won't need to do anything to the classic Vibe Mustang plus its much lighter.

Looking at a 1960s Mustang manual, the recommended string gauges were .013-.055 or .010-.038 round wound and .012-.050 or .013-.054 flatwound strings (in the mid-Sixties all Fender guitars came with .012-.052 round wound strings); I changed to some .012-.052 flatwounds, a little lighter than what I have on my Jazzmaster.
While adjusting the bridge height for the new strings was not difficult, the same cannot be said for moving the vibrato springs to the bottom post notch to adjust for for higher tension strings. The ends of the springs had been crimped so tightly around the post that a lot of time was spent bending the spring ends just enough so that they could be taken off the top notch (there are three notches per post).
The neck is easy to play and at first impression the Indian laurel fretboard definitely doesn't look (some lemon oil does help) or feel like rosewood but it feels fine. What did not feel fine was the frets — they were in need of dressing. They felt rough like sandpaper under the strings and the sharp fret ends needed some filing. The Saf-Ti-String style tuners have been a personal favorite for decades and make string changing easy and give a neat appearance. Is the nut actually bone? It's hard to tell. It doesn't feel like bone, but eventually I may replace it with a Tusq nut. I did replace the string tree with a Tusq one because I had an extra one.
The Fender Dynamic Vibrato unit is a lot less intuitive than the Jazzmaster's and I recommend consulting the internet for advice on setting it up, because the supplied information sheet is mostly in Spanish and has a diagram of a different vibrato unit and Fender's website link to a manual on the product page is not instrument specific. I'm not looking to do Adrian Belew-style bends, just an occasional surf-style vibrato accent, and I'm aware of the Mustang vibrato's reputation for not staying in tune.
Electronics sound fine and I'll definitely replace them with higher quality parts eventually.
Overall a great guitar, just be prepared to do some setup work.
