It come with a handle attachment which gives you more control of thing like zoom and the video filming capabilities - this attaches to the camera itself through a wire but unfortunately having it connected also drains the battery quite a bit so I use it sparingly when I can. One of my favourite features of the handle is that the front part of the handle (the side on which the buttons aren't) split and slide outwards and the handle becomes a kind of 'tripod' stand for the camera (this would be fantastic for vloggers or for taking selfies (as selfies can be put on timer). The handle has a button that controls a hinge allowing the camera to be angled which way you like - and you might find this very nifty and useful when using the handle as a stand.
It also had a nifty little bracket/arm thing you attach to the handle which will allow you to mount both the camera and either an external mic (which I don't have...yet) or an external light source (which I do!). It was very important to me that the camera came with this attachment as otherwise I'd have had to hold the light source myself since the camera came with no internal flash (and inside photography or filming really requires it unless you have a lot of natural light or a lot of lights in the room).
The handle will support the light and camera when the bracket is attached quite well when it is used as a tripod (but you have to balance it properly and be wary of certain angles - you can't put it on a high shelf then angle it down for instance).
Unlike every other camera I've ever used it shockingly came with TWO batteries which are both rechargeable. There was no external battery charger supplied - the batteries charge within the camera and I will say, it does take quite a few hours to get a full charge on the battery (so definitely give both batteries a charge the night before a big planned photography or video filming outing). I dare say as the battery charges in the camera via a USB cord (the USB cord does have a plug adapter for wall sockets, by the way), you could possibly use a powerbank and charge it on the go - I haven't tested my own with it yet, but I'd guess it'd give it a tiny boost enough for a few photos or a few minutes of video more than you'd have had without it. I did note if you're using the camera while it's plugged in to the socket, it doesn't actually seem to charge it much (if at all) but at least you can still use the camera if the battery is depleted as long as you have USB socket or plug socket nearby which is a plus.
I was delighted it included the bracket that let me attach my external light source (it's actually for filming video but works well for still photography - I don't want to mention the brand in case I'm not allowed to but you can find them here on the site).
I've attached a photo of the handle with the bracket arm attached with both camera and my own external light source on it to give you an idea of what the bulk and shape of the camera will be with the handle and the bracket for the light/mic attached.
I had to actually order an SD card for the camera as it was really the only thing not supplied (this is standard with most cameras). The camera has no internal memory to record onto so you absolutely need an SD card to use it. Any standard Micro SD card will work for basic photography but you'll be locked out of video features and being able to save raw images unless you get the intended SD card for it (which is an SDXC class 10 - they're quite affordable and have huge storage capacity).
If you only have a standard micro SD upon receipt of camera, you can still take some pretty nice sharp images (the pictures I've supplied of the plants and the tabby cat were filmed on a cheap micro SD that came out of a phone that's five years old so it'll prove you can still get some good quality images even with the most basic of cards like I started with).
I will say as much as I love this camera, I do find it awkward to use for focus as the screen being so small doesn't give you the best indication of whether everything is in focus or not and sometimes I won't find what's in focus and what's not until I've actually removed the SD card and put it in the reader for my laptop. There are a ton of settings in the camera that I still haven't mastered yet, but I will update my review once I've gotten to it.
Now, I'm going to hit on one VERY important factor here for me. When I ordered this I was incredibly excited because it was described as being able to connect to your phone so you could immediately access the pictures. It has Bluetooth and wifi capabilities and that had me grinning. However upon receipt of the product I realised I had to download an app made by Sony - and that was fine. However, the app wouldn't let me connect to the camera and kept asking me for a 'QR code' that it indicated would be on the camera. It wasn't. the QR codes on the boxes and the instructions wouldn't work and I had to get in touch with Sony through their site to explain the problem. The most of an answer I got back was 'sorry but your iPhone 6SE isn't compatible' (not even a mention of the QR code I was asking about). I was very confused as I looked at the list of compatible devices on the app and iPhone 6SE was amongst them so..., I can't connect it via Bluetooth. I'm sad as it means no uploading from this camera as I go.
The camera connects to the Wifi and boasts to be able to send pictures to the smart TVs but at the moment it isn't picking up any of my TVs for some reason but for some reason picked up an absolutely unknown TV not belonging to us so I'm not sure who was leeching off my wifi but certainly some neighbour's TV got sent pictures of my cats (mwahahaha).
The video quality is quite nice, but I don't see a way to change focus on the camera with it, so you can film far away shots just fine but the closer you get, the blurrier the images begin to get (like I was trying to film a flower and it just wouldn't let me focus in on it very well as I moved in on it) but footage of the cats was fine and fairly sharp (especially with the external light source added in the mix). I will say on video quality, it pics up sound quite well enough and doesn't sound too tinny if you're not too far from the camera. I took video of the cats and I could hear my mother talking in the background eight feet away as clear as a bell, although my voice behind the camera was just as clear (but louder). So an external mic might be an option if you're a 'youtuber' or using this for filming on the fly documentary or interviews, but it will work fine without. It films sound well - better than I think my phone does.
My only qualms really are that it's difficult to control focus on the images I'm taking as there are no buttons for it (you can hold down the photo button a bit and it'll auto focus but it won't always turn out perfect) and the fact I have to keep opening the camera and removing the card and inserting it into a card reader to put into the laptop. I will say though that the SDXC micro SD class 10 card I got (the cheapest available) reads incredibly fast without any hang. And, I'll add the camera turns on fairly fast itself without any hang -one tap of the on button and it's ready in milliseconds to start snapping or filming, which is great for events that happen fast - you won't miss them waiting for the camera to kick up and load.
One other thing that really bothered me a great deal was when I took the camera outside in the sun I couldn't really see the screen (which is literally the only viewfinder you have) to see if I was framing shots correctly or in focus. Like with a standard LED screen phone, the screen gets darker the brighter the sun outside is. When I got home, I found many photos were somewhat blurry and I feel this is because I didn't have a good view of what I was aiming at to see focus and framing. Filming video was incredibly difficult. I took two videos and one was stunning and sharp, the other was incredibly blurry and unbelievably shaky (although this is the one I deliberately made a bit shaky to see if the camera would steady the image as the description suggested). I feel if I'd been able to see the screen right, I might have been able to avoid this blurry shaky result. I'm not sure how I could really rectify the screen being too dark to see other than having some kind of homemade hood on the back end of it to shade it?
As I think I've mentioned, I've supplied some basic images - a few are sharper than others because I'm still working on how to get that nice crisp image but from what I can see, the images that I did get in focus do look like the quality of a DSLR camera.
I've played about with the camera for selfies a bit - people who want to film vlogs or selfies will be delighted to know that the LED screen on the back flips up and backwards to face the lens so that you can see yourself (and it'll flip the image the right way around). The camera has an option to soften faces which is basically just like a 'snapchat' filter which blurs all the imperfections, lightens scarring and brightens the overall complexion. I turned it on but didn't like it as I felt it made me look a bit blurry but when it was off, I took a selfie and for some reason the photo came out looking professionally photoshopped, my head scar was less read, my pores were gone, skin looked porcelain...I'd done NOTHING to the picture. I was just shocked (and wishing that was how I looked, lol). Another selfie I took showed absolutely every imperfect feature on my face down to minute hairs on my nose, every pore and pockmark and the eyebrow hairs growing in that I didn't even see with the naked eye. So to say the camera can pretty much do a lot of different things is an understatement - it's just understanding out to work it.
It doesn't come with a physical manual - you have to download it. But I'm more of a visual or hands on learner because I find often instructions can get more confusing than playing around with settings and seeing what works and what doesn't.
Let me just finish this first impressions review by saying it's an amazing little camera and it has a lot in it for so small a piece of technology. It's light, it's portable, it doesn't take up much room, and the images are superb and the colours are so vivid and true to life (as long as you're in focus).
