PS Vita.

PSP Vita

The PS Vita is a fantastic handheld: Sony has a tendency to always go hi-tech and all out when they release new hardware, and the Vita is no different. This particular console adds the ability to connect to mobile 3G networks using a SIM card (sold separately!). I'll be honest with you: with as much Wi-Fi as there is around me, and as much hassle as I get when it comes to trying to manage a mobile data plan, I'll probably never use the 3G feature: mine came as part of a bundle, with discount, that included an 8GB card I would otherwise have bought separately, so it made better economic sense. Whether you're dying for 3G or could care less, it makes sense to shop around Amazon for the various bundle deals: like me, you may find one that suits you. The rest of the PS Vita is as cutting-edge now as the PSP was when it was released. So what makes a PS Vita so special?CONTROLSEvery piece of the Vita has something to do with interaction: you not only have dual sticks, shoulder buttons, a D-Pad, the familiar four-button layout and Start/Select/Home, you also have really smooth gyroscopic and accelerometric sensors that let you tip, tilt, and roll the unit to play some games. The generous front screen is also a touch-screen with slick responsiveness that makes my smartphone jealous. The back has touch sensors that aren't just for fingertips--Uncharted: Golden Abyss has a jaw-dropping interactive moment where you hold the back of the PS Vita up to the light to 'read' a faded piece of parchment. Last, there are digital cameras on both the front and back for taking pictures and video. All of this can be saved to a memory stick, but the downside is that Sony has changed formats on us again: old Memory sticks are NOT compatible with the Vita. The newer storage system is proprietary to the PS Vita.SCREENThe screen is bigger than the PSP and about the same size as the top screen of the super-sized Nintendo 3DS XL. While it is as sensitive to direct sunlight as your average laptop, it does boast a bright screen in just about any other lighting condition. Just like the PSP and PS3, there is a menu bar that lets you customize all sorts of settings including brightness and power-saving modes. Touching the front screen is very smooth, with complicated gestures easily translated by games.FEATURESIn addition to gameplay, the PS Vita offers the same kinds of multimedia features as the PSP: music and video streaming, including Netflix (which works very well over Wi-Fi). There is a feature called "Near" that will tell you what friends near to you might be playing, or let you look for a new friend nearby with the same game interests. GPS is also built in as part of the unit and you can use it to navigate if you wish. I haven't really used this or the 'LiveArea' that lets you share your gaming details with other people, or the IM feature that lets you message people. I've been more inclined to use my PlayStation Network / PlayStation Store account to pull down games, including my PSP and PSOne favorites, and play them on a larger, brighter screen. One of the neat things about the interface is the 'peel off' way it's organized: the home screen has round 'bubble' icons that you can tap to access an application. Each application has a base page that organizes the basic things you might do, such as 'read the manual', 'check for updates', or the most-often-used, 'launch the game' and its corner sticks up like a curled piece of paper. If you're in-game and press the home button, the game is suspended and you're dropped back to this screen. Closing the home screen is as simple as using your finger to peel that corner down, like turning the page of a book: the application is closed and you are back at the 'bubble' icon home screen. The PS Vita has a built-in browser, and mostly I use it for accessing features off the base page, such as 'Help' or 'Support'.The way accessories are designed now follows the 'USB cable' design: your PS Vita will have a charger plug, a tiny power box it plugs into, and from there a USB cable leads from the charger to the PS Vita. The connector on the Vita is also proprietary, and that means that whether you're using an AC adapter, a car charger, or just connecting to a computer, you can't do it without that proprietary connector-to-USB cable. If there's a drawback to the PS Vita, it's that the high price sticker reminds us that this isn't a kids' console. The unit is large and unwieldy. It feels fragile and because it's expensive one of the first things you'll want to do is pick up a good protective case for it. You won't be able to stick it in the average pocket and you'll definitely not want to leave expensive hardware like this lying around or it'll grow legs. If you have the money though you won't be disappointed in this hi-tech handheld: it is top-drawer gaming technology at its best.

Великолепно

This review will address the AT&T bonus bundle which includes one 8GB memory card ($30), a DD code for Super Stardust ($10 PSN game) and a 250MB 3G network data packet ($15), which should be available through the end of this month. The review on the actual PSV hardware itself will follow. As many have already mentioned, the promo items (PSN game and data packet) are only redeemable AFTER paying for the initial data packet, so anyone who thinks they're getting their first month free and will be downloading Super Stardust shortly after charging up their PSV for the first time will probably be upset, and not unreasonably so as the conditions for redeeming the promo items are not mentioned on the box itself. It's also a little underhanded to make users wait a month after using their first month of 3G service before they receive their game download code, but free is free I suppose and it is only a $10 DD game to begin with.On the flip side, if anyone is actually buying a 3G model with the intention of NEVER paying for even one month/data packet, one almost has to question the intelligence of buying this model when the WiFi model is $50 less. At any rate, $15 isn't much for a two month (limited given the 250MB data cap) trial run of the service. As for the 3G service itself, after one week of using it, about the only function it currently serves is for Near updates (PSV social app that shows who's playing what on the PSV in your proximity) and web browsing on the PSV's browser when outside of a WiFi network. It is very limited as of this writing and subjectively not worth subscribing to with the assumption that the PSV owner already has a smartphone with a data plan. If the PSV is your only way of accessing a 3G network when cut off from WiFi, it still beats running around for a WiFi hotspot.Lastly, the bundle comes with a 8GB memory card that currently retails for $30. It is easily the best added value component of the bundle and even if one were to ignore the data packet/PSN game, it's only $20 over the cost of a $250 WiFi PSV when purchased with a $30 memory card. Seeing as how very little information has been put out regarding future uses for 3G and the PSV, $20 is nothing to add that feature on the chance that the service becomes worth renewing down the road. There are no service contracts. As for the PSV itself, after two weeks of initial impressions, it is easily the most enjoyable handheld gaming device I have used running all the back to the original Gameboy and before with Nintendo Game and Watch games and Mattel Electronic Sports games, etc. The last two handhelds I've used extensively have been the PSP and the 3DS for recent comparisons. The 5" OLED display is the first noticeable feature, with its ink like blacks, high contrast, relatively tight pixel density and even light distribution due to the self illuminating OLED pixels.Build, fit and finish feels balanced and substantial. Face buttons and D-pad have a very satisfying click feedback that feels precise and responsive. The D-pad in particular, as the first deviation from the familiar Playstation 4 arrow button cross design is the best feeling D-pad I can remember using. The face buttons are smaller than those of the PSP and slightly larger than those of the 3DS. The X button proximity to the right analog stick has been mentioned as a potential issue, presumably for those who press with the heel of the thumb ("rolling") rather than the tip of the thumb (precise).Following the OLED display, the second most prominent feature is the twin analog sticks, a first for handhelds. Unlike the sliding disk design used by the PSP and again by the 3DS, the PSV uses actual mini analog sticks with the same single axis rocking action everyone who has used an analog stick controller is familiar with. The feedback is a bit tighter than that of the DS3 with less travel due to the short throw axis which basically means more precise input is both possible and required for games without aim assist or loose controls. The size will probably take some getting used to for most, but for anyone who managed to adapt to the barely usable slider disk of the PSP, the analog sticks should be a snap to use.The size of the PSV is another oft noted design issue, which is partially to accomodate the 5" screen in addition to the real estate taken by the face buttons, analog sticks and D-pad. Yes, the bezel could be thinner, but the controls themselves really can't be spaced much closer without causing more issues than solving. "Not pocket-sized" is another oft made comment regarding the size although it will easily slip into the back jeans pocket of just about any pair of jeans with at least a 30" inseam that aren't cut or worn like jeggings. I just don't know who would actually want to carry something like the PSV in their back pocket without some sort of case, slip cover, etc. to prevent scratches or other damage. On the plus side, the PSV should fit average to large size hands very co

So I managed to get my hands on a Vita (3G/WiFi version) shortly after launch, and I also got a 16GB memory card along with Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Wipeout 2048 (Thank you Sony, I love you too).So what do I think after a week of ownership? Well quite honestly, I couldn't be happier with this marvel of portable gaming. So why, oh why, do I love my Vita so much?Well let's break it down a little so I can explain how I feel about this wonderful machine.*I have not activated any 3G services yet (I just haven't had the need). I just wanted to put that out there before I get started.Hardware.The Vita is much lighter than I expected but still feels very robust. It fits comfortably in the hands with a couple of matte grip areas on the back to rest your fingertips on. A quad-core processor and quad-core graphics processor power the impressive graphics, which show up wonderfully on the 5-inch display, which is the best looking handheld gaming display I've ever seen. Everything looks good on the Vita, games, movies (streamed from Netflix), and photos. Even the operating system is amazing to look at. There are left and right shoulder buttons, a PlayStation button, and Start and Select buttons. The Start and Select buttons are really small and not particularly easy to hit, but as you rarely use them whilst playing, I don't think it's going to be an issue. On top of the Vita are the power and volume buttons, along with the slot for game cards and a proprietary port of some sort (can't find any info on what this is for). The bottom of the Vita houses the headphone socket, a microphone, USB charging and communication connection, and a slot for the memory card. The memory cards are proprietary to Sony but look a lot like micro SD cards. There are two cameras built into the Vita, one front and one rear facing. They work great for the augmented reality games and some of the other game demos I've tried, but they're not going to take the place of your digital camera or even your smartphone camera anytime soon.Controls.First thing that you'll notice is that it looks just like any other piece of Sony gaming hardware. The screen is flanked by two analog thumb sticks, then above those are the classic PlayStation buttons on the right and a D-pad on the left. Both the buttons and D-pad feel smaller than the ones I remember on the PSP. The most impressive thing of course is that finally someone has made a portable system with dual analog sticks, hooray! Next be prepared to be blown away, not only is the gorgeous display a touch screen, but the back of the handheld is a touchpad too. When I first got the Vita my initial reaction was that the analog controls where a little 'twitchy' but I have to say that after a week, I've gotten used to them. Both the placement and responsiveness took me a few days to get the hang of, but also remember I haven't had a portable system for the last 6 months since my first generation PSP went kaput recently. The touch screen is ultra responsive and my only complaint is that it suffers from the same thing all touch screens do . . . . oily fingerprint smears.Display.I really haven't paid too much attention to OLED screens in general. I'm more than happy with my LED TV so didn't really pursue OLEDS very much. I know they're supposed to be better than LCD with greater clarity and brighter colors. Well all I can say is that 'they' are not wrong, the 5" OLED screen is amazing with awesome depth and color. It's definitely the most vivid screen I've seen, and I've yet to see any problems with screen tearing or pixilation when watching movies or playing games.Graphics.Gorgeous is the first word that comes to mind. I really can't tell you what the resolution is, because I haven't bothered to look it up, but I can tell you it looks just like my PlayStation 3, just on a smaller scale. I dare you to look at the screen and not be impressed!Extras.Playstation Vita does more than just play games. Here are some of the highlights included in the operating system:Google Maps is included in the operating system, which works exactly as you'd expect if you've ever used it on a smartphone or tablet. The GPS seemed pretty accurate, but I don't see this being used much. I just can't imagine too many scenarios where it would be easier to pull out your Vita than your smartphone, maybe it would useful for people without smartphones though?Web Browser. Yes there's a web browser, yes it's better than the PlayStation 3 one, but you're only likely to use it for quickly looking something up as it's still pretty mediocre by today's standards.Apps. There are currently apps for Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, and Netflix. More apps have been promised in the future. Netflix works flawlessly and has a very similar interface to the PlayStation 3 app. I'm hoping for a Skype app next.Near is the app which adds a social aspect to the device by showing you nearby Vita users, what they're playing and what trophies they've won etc. There's also a wa

I've waited quite a while for this thing and I'm not even remotely disappointed; quite the contrary, I'm willing to overlook this thing's flaws and view it as the best game hardware to date.In terms of power, the thing is pretty much a PS3-lite. The analog sticks felt a little wobbly at first, now that I'm used to them I wouldn't have them any other way- I'm sure they're made that way to last long inside of pockets. The d-pad, on the other hand, is the single most comfortable and responsive d-pad I've ever used; if only I had gotten Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom to play with the d-pad in depth for hundreds of hours. The face buttons feel nice and responsive, they aren't hard on your thumbs after a long play session like the PSP's, plus they won't scratch anywhere near as easily. The 5-inch qHD OLED screen is amazing, so much more rich and vibrant than my $200 1080p monitor. The launch lineup is the best of any other game system in history, 26 games and around half are good enough for quality-spoiled, rich-tastes me. Multi-tasking with the Vita is so much more slick than you'd expect, it feels just magical. The UI didn't look all that nice in previews, but now that I have the thing in my hands I think it has the best UI of any handheld I've ever played by a mile- it's so entertaining to just flick stuff around and close programs by turning a page and multi-tasking is better than I ever would've imagined. This is also my first proper game system that gets achievements or trophies(besides my PC), and I have to say it really augments the experience in a positive way in each launch title I have, rewarding me for trying out all of a game's features and really sticking to my games; that's a subject for a different time, but I will say that synching trophies is fast and easy and that getting the trophy popups are even more rewarding than when they pop up on Steam. As I said in the title to this review, the Vita does have some notable flaws worth mentioning. From what I can tell you can't switch PSN accounts without a second memory card, that's a real killer for people like me who have two accounts loaded with games. Oh, speaking of memory cards, they're extremely expensive. Luckily if you only plan on buying games at retail you can't go wrong with an 8 or 16 GB memory card(included in this bundle is an 8 GB card, luckily, so there's nothing to worry about at the start). I was able to fit a few game demos, a few downloadable titles, some updates and some PSN videos onto my Vita and still had enough room for both seasons of Spectacular Spider-Man and some music- clearly I'm not hurting for space just yet. The web browser is fine for looking up game guides and things like that but apparently you can't yet look at Youtube videos or anything like that; as long as it eventually hits the Vita I'm fine, but it won't quite replace my PC as a complete entertainment hub any time soon. It totally sucks that you can't use the web browser while your game is minimized, but apparently Sony's working on an update to allow that so I guess I can wait a while to use online guides while in-game. Also, this is just exclusive to this bundle but apparently I have to wait for Super Stardust Delta to get it for free from AT&T and can't just buy it now and give the code to a friend, this means I have to wait on the only downloadable game at launch I absolutely must have. :

I will try to be as unbiased as possible. What I mean by that is that I have a bad habit of comparing products to much better products or technologies. I will instead try to judge this as a seperate system as if I knew of nothing else.First I want to say that the launch bundle was very misleading. In big print, you get a free memory card, a free game, and 1 month of 3g free. In small print you do get that memory card :-) but you don't get the free game until 30 days after activating your paid version (out of pocket) of 3g. Further, what isn't written (and I had to google search it) your free game is not a game of your choice. It is instead some throw away game called Super Stardust Delta. Why say "a free game" when you really mean "Super Stardust Delta that I'm cramming down your throat." Be explicit with your promotions, no beating around the bush please. So my "55 dollar value" isn't a 55 dollar value in my eyes. I would have rather bought a wifi version and just pay for the memory card and skip on the (as of today) useless 3g and "Super Stardust Delta" craptacular give away instead of paying 55 dollars for a 8gb memory card (the only useful bundled item).Ok, I got that off my chest. Now how about I start from turning the thing on. Pretty clean startup and setup programming. I fell in love with the touch screen (and out of love) rather quickly. I do wish you can use the directional pad for menus but it's no big deal. I updated the system which was rather fast so that's a plus. My PSN sign in worked flawlessly. I signed up for the 3g 250 MB package. But after using it for 24 hours I have yet to even use 1 byte on the 3g network. It is a pretty useless feature. They claim you can play games but none i have played support it and as far as texting and internet, well my phone does that. After finding out that I don't get to choose my own "free" game, I bought Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 which is the only Vita game I wanted (not including the upcoming FFX). The gameplay is nice and the wifi online gameplay is just as fluid (if not more fluid) than the PS3 version. I haven't tried the crossplay feature but considering the remote play is a flop, I don't expect much from crossplay.Graphics: The graphics are decent when compared to PS3 and less than decent when compared to a PC but when compared to any other portable system they are the best out there (not counting laptops or notebooks). I played the demo of Unit 13, Rayman, and Unchartered. Rayman's graphics were well done and tried to use the best qualities of the system, Unchartered looked bad IMO and looked like a pre Half Life 2 game (like a PC game from 2003 on back). The shadows were blocky and there are still jaggies after all these years. If you know you're not capable of doing something like smooth shadows then use simple shadows but checkerboard shadows look cheap and lazy. Don't expect RE5 (PS3) graphics but they're decent. MVC3 looks awesome BTW.Sound: Awesome sound quality. Kind of sounds like it is surround (virtual maybe).Failed claims: Though some of these were made aware a couple weeks before launch, it still a failed claim that Sony claimed the system would do: 1.) Full PSP game support - they copped out of the UMD support for EU and USA but Japan has UMD support. 2.) PS3 games can be played remotely - The remote play is no different than the PSP version. It sucked then and it sucks now. You can only play PS1 games remotely (and in bad resolution/no full screen) and a handful of crap games that no one cares about. 3.) PS1 games can be played - only remotely, you can't install them on the system. My main reason for buying this system was the remote play feature that they marketed very well. The ability to play games on your PS3 from your Vita, ANYWHERE! Awesome idea huh? I had dreams of playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Batman AC, RE5, and countless other games on the go, at school, and maybe even the gym or somehthing. That dream was crushed when I opened it and found that it is not supported. There are some youtube videos of some people that have hacked their PS3 and were able to do it so I don't understand why Sony won't let us do it... I'm hopeful that Sony will improve this thing and at least get the remote play working right. If that would happen, I would give this 5 stars and probably wouldn't mind paying 500 dollars for a Vita but as is, wait until the price goes down (Sony claims this will be happening very soon!).

The Crystal White 3G/Wifi version was only released in 2 territories. Japan and Asian (specifically Taiwan). All PS Vita consoles are region free meaning you can select the language at system setup and all region games play on your system. US games (English) work on Japanese/Taiwan/UK systems, and vice versa.

I got the White OLED model for the color since the US only has Black as it's primary console choice, and because of the superb OLED display.

The PS Vita is an investment. Like Sony did with the PSP: they promise features down the long run. Right now, Facebook is missing. Call of Duty has been announced for Fall, and supporters like Bioshock and the MGS Collection are coming. That said, the PSP2 or Vita as it's called is an excellent gaming device. The 3G/Wi-fi version comes with an 8GB memory stick, which was surprising because everyone said that the memory stick was another investment that you had to purchase. Not this one. While I'd rate the 8GB "Standard", I'd rate the 16Gb "Excellent", and the 32Gb "Awesome!", while the 4GB stands at below standard with "Poor."The 3G comes with a free download of a PSN game (unannounced at this time) but only after you sign up with AT&T for a full 30 days. A month later, you will get your free download. Plus, Sony is willing to pay for your second month of At&T service. I've checked them out and it's $15 for 256MB of data downloads, or $30 for 3Gb of download speeds. Unlike most mobile carriers who slow down your data speeds, or halt it completely, going over your data amount means you have to pay an extra $0.01 (1 cent) per KiloByte (KB) used. That's a bit risky to me, but the option is there, and the price isn't "that bad..."The games are a different scenario... While you can buy relatively cheaper games from the PSN store (rather than a retail store) you are sacrificing money to fill up your memory card space, for money you will have to invest in later for a larger memory stick. Keep in mind that you can only have 1 memory stick per Vita, as it is linked to your PSN account. That means you cannot swap memory sticks back and forth without losing some sort of data. (I don't know -- this is weird to me.)The PS Vita is definately a machine trying to combat piracy. The PSP was hacked to death by swapping batteries and memory sticks to get it to hack correctly. As Sony discovered this, I'm pretty sure this is why the PS Vita has a un-removeable battery (yes, if your battery dies completely prepare to buy another Vita.) and the memory stick tethered to one PSN account means you can't share your downloads with other player or other Vitas, even if you have two... This is all Sony trying to combat piracy and make the early adopter pay as much as possible (to make up for their 2 billion dollar loss, no less...) However, there is hope...As the Vita becomes standard and a price drop in place, it could take off as was promised by Sony with the PSP. (They never got the rear-view camera to work with Gran Turismo; or did they?) and yes, the features of "apps" make their appearance, but it's all controlled by Sony whether or not they want to release them to the public. If you buy this machine, you have to play by Sony's rules. It's kind of like a playground where a monitor is telling you what you can and can't do. Interesting, but still convoluted. In any case, as it stands the PS Vita is an excellent machine. Given time, and the release of Call of Duty no-less, the Vita could take off as the gamer's choice of handheld. Having held it, played it, and tested it, this machine acts more like a brand new console than it does a portable cousin to the PS3. It really is an interesting and entertaining device, just prepare to empty your wallet if you want to protect your investment. (See accessories...)I give the PS Vita a 5 out of 5 for doing what everyone wanted to do in the first place with the PSP: Dual analog sticks, touch-screen, and beautifully decorated. Durability is excellent (don't drop it -- see accessories to protect that...) The price right now is what's killing early-adopters decision. No doubt, Sony is relying on hardcore early adopters to spend their money for the retail price before they drop it to pertain to the masses of people who really want to get their hands on it. Time will tell how this device will sell, and handle.Great price (though, not for everyone), great features, and great games, so far...5 out of 5. Thanks you!

I think the PS Vita is worth every penny. I got the 3G version just in case I wanted the feature later on. The AT&T 3G service can be prepaid monthly, so it's not as big of a deal as a phone contract. I was given the option to buy 250MB ($15) 2gb ($25) or 5GB ($50) per month. 250MB would probably cover you, unless you're on the road all the time and are using the browser and GPS functions regularly. For example, a 5 miles trip through the city used 7MB of data with Satellite+Road view on (it uses Google Maps data).First off, the OLED screen on the Vita is amazing. I think it's on par with my Dell U2711 IPS monitor as far as color reproduction. At the same time, the black to white contrast is insane. I've never seen a screen go as dark as the one on the Vita and still be active. There's very little color shift when you view the screen at an angle (similar to an IPS display). The screen has a simple gloss finish, so outside viewing can be troublesome, but you can probably help that with a textured screen protector like Zagg sells. The controls are very good. They work well and fit my hands properly. My only gripe is the rear touchpad. You can end of touching it accidentally if you tap you fingers on it. Some games don't use it at all, but when playing ones that do, you have to be mindful of it. Also the sticks are analog, so you can do pressure-sensitive tasks with them, but the X, O, /\, [], are not pressure sensitive like they are on the PS3 dual-shock controller. The Vita weighs a little over 1 lb., and I haven't noticed it becoming too heavy in my hands while holding it for any length of time.Battery life is good. It'll last all day with intermittent play, and you could probably get 5 solid hours of play before you have to recharge. I'd guess the standby time is about 72 hours. There's a lot of features, but the ones I like the most are the newer Maps application and the PS3 remote play feature. On maps (assuming you have 3G), you can use it like a GPS without voice instructions. It's about the same as the navigators on a normal smart-phone, but it is nice to have on a 5" screen. Remote play, as it is now, lets you control the basic functions of the PS3 and watch videos and download/upload files to the PS3 wirelessly (you don't even need to use your WiFi network for it to work.) Most games don't work on Remote play, but a handful do, which makes me think future updates to the PS3 and the Vita will allow more games to work properly. The game selection for the Vita right now is pretty sparse. I bought "Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus" and "Super Stardust Delta" and both are good games with good graphics, and use most of the Vita's features. I would like to see more titles come out, and there are several more set for release before the end of Q2 2012. I just hope for something like Armored Core or Gran Turismo eventually. One goof feature is you can download demos for most games straight to the Vita, and try them before you buy. All the demos I've downloaded are less than 1GB, so on my 8GB (7.6GB realized) memory card, I still have plenty of space. The social features for the Vita are very good. It leverages the PSN friend network and adds in "Near" so you can see people who have Vita consoles near you. I've already added several people to my friend's list using Near, so there's a pool of people I can invite to multiplayer games later on. You can see what games/application people are using on Near, and then ask them questions or send general text messages to people using the message utility. I think the social features work well and will help make the Vita a better gaming device.Overall, I'm very pleased with the Vita. More games will make it even better. I can tell Sony focused on making it a portable gaming machine. It has added in features and abilities, but first and foremost, it is for playing games.
