+1 - Item arrived on time, and not damaged - Amazon took it back with no issues
-1 - Item arrived in it's original box, which meant that everyone could see exactly what it was I ordered while it set on my front porch all day. I also got a bit of a hard time from FedEx when I went to return as it was not "in a box". After explaining that's how I received it, they finally took it.
-1 - Cost vs Capability - I would pay $500 for this, but not $1,000+ (was $1,500 brand new at retail stores, got it cheaper on here)
-1 - Subwoofer randomly disconnects, subwoofer also loses connection to soundbar causing you to have to power it off and back on
-1 - Sound is NOT that great for the cost. I've had $300 systems sound better than this sound bar, but adding the subwoofer definitely helps this sound bar

Thoughts: The bottom line is that this is way overpriced for what it delivers. Coupled with the random subwoofer disconnects is what caused me to return it, but if it would have been $400-$500 I might've actually kept it and tried to find a way to work around the sub disconnects. I updated the firmware on everything, changed a bunch of settings, sometimes it seemed like it would help, but ultimately I would go down to watch TV, turn everything on, and the sub would never wake up - sometimes it would though which is what was confusing. To add to it, the sound from the bar itself is nothing to write home about. I have 8 foot ceilings, calibrated it for everything, and the "reflection" ability was just not impressive, and without the sub this bar is just lame. I also had issues with the ARC connection. Randomly I couldn't get off the home page of the soundbar, despite the fact that I had a device powered on and ready to go. I would select the right input, it would change over to my device, I would see it briefly, and then it would go back to the soundbar home menu. I tried a couple of different HDMI cables including different brands (thought I have all 4K HDMI cables in my setup). I also tested this on other TVs I have that have ARC connections and experienced the same result.

Conclusion: This sound bar sub setup is not ready for prime time, and it is definitely NOT worth this shoppers money. Reduce the cost by 1/2, fix the issues, and try again Sony.

I tried the LG Sky10, the Samsung Hw K950 and was disappointed with both: the Samsung isn't' compatible with Dolby Vision and Dolby Digital at the same time and wouldn't work with Apple TV when content had both, also, very buggy in general. The LG Sky10 was a real disappointment, although it was compatible with most formats, the quality of the sound was just plain bad: in certain instances (ATMOS) it's hard/impossible to hear voices (you can't increase center volume either).
I finally bought the Sony bar and I am very pleased; it is loud and has EXCELLENT sound effects in ATMOS, it's compatible with ALL formats, has flawless passthrough and music sounds great. FYI, it is installed in a room that has 9 foot ceilings and seating position about 10 feet from bar. EXCELLENT JOB SONY!

As soon as you unpack the box you know the Sony Sound Bar just screams quality.
The sleek design will make a great addition to your home theater. The soundbar is
quite heavy, about twenty pounds for the bar alone. The subwoofer adds another 30
pounds to the system. You have 3 HDMI Inputs with a HDMI(Arc) option on the back.
The sound bar comes with a magnetic grill, which can be on or off, either way the sound
bar looks fantastic. The set up was quick and easy. It practically set itself up. A minute
or two to set up Wi-Fi, a few more minutes to do the obligatory software update and you
are on your way. Full disclosure, I am not a sound connoisseur by any means. My
review is not scientific; it is not being dissected by an engineer. I am an average guy
who enjoys the movie theater experience. I am not sitting in a home theater, just a
regular “family/living room”.
My setup is simple, a Sony 55” Brava and a TiVo Roamio for this review.
The soundbar has all the features I want and a whole bunch of features that I do not
know that I really want. To begin the sound is crisp and clear, you can feel the
sound. You will notice how the soundbar by far exceeds your built-in speakers from the
TV. The immersive sound makes this well worth the soundbar upgrade. A virtual
surround soundbar that combines digital signal processing and S-Force Pro Front
Surround to deliver amazing sound. The Dolby Atoms delivers a 360-degree surround
sound. The dedicated music service button allows me to pick up exactly where I left off,
so, I never miss a beat. The NFC one touch connection allows me to stream instantly
from my smartphone. Connects to the internet with the built in Wi-fi. The soundbar has
9- coaxial speakers built into the soundbar.
The different built in sound settings give a good mixture for movies, music, sports,
gaming and standard. Playing with them gives a nice variety of adjustments. Then hit
the 3D Sound setting and put your seatbelt on.
The manual is quite thick and will join a lot of other stereo manuals in a drawer
somewhere. The remote has plenty of buttons that I will probably never intentionally
touch. I want this set up perfectly the first time and hopefully never touch the remote
again.
I tuned in to some music from my cable company package, the sound was, to my ears,
quite good at high and low volume. Switching to a broadcast HD movie and the
subwoofer came alive!! Thor never sounded so good. I was sitting @ 10 feet away,
ears slightly above the soundbar and I felt sound all around me, literally bouncing off
me! WOW!

Bluetooth (LDAC), sounds a lot better than any Bluetooth speaker I have heard before,
big fancy names included.
I Have seen some reports about crackling from the subwoofer, nothing problems here.
No drop offs either. Most problems I assume are from people who do not look at the
manual AT ALL.
I have not investigated rear speakers, but so far, I did see no reason for them (yet
anyway).
Bottom line, love it, great sound, excellent stereo (after all this is what it actually is).
Will probably learn more about it over time, but for now I want to finish watching Thor
save the world.

Sony is the WORST. Stay away if you have a mesh Wifi system. Sub makes horrible popping sounds from interference. After 25 hours of my life have been wasted in trying to fix this issue I was informed today by Sony that they know there is an issue with mesh WiFi systems. They don’t have a fix and my product, that is still in warranty, is mine to keep forever. No refund offered no replacement offered by Sony.
NOTHING.
Just sorry sir your sound will suck forever and we don’t care. We have your money and won’t give it back!
Bye Sony. Please never buy a Sony product people. Their customer support is all time horrible.

sony just released new firmware for dtsx
This utility updates the Sound Bar to version M40.R.0374 and provides the following changes and benefits
Adds support for the DTS Immersive Audio format
Adds support for the DTS: X format (including DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS Digital Surround)
Adds support for Dolby Vision pass-through
Adds support for the Multi-room Group Sync feature
Enables a feature to allow for future maintenance in the Spotify Connect app

I've had this for a while now and there is intermittent distortion coming out of the subwoofer. It's a rumble that is unrelated to any sound/effects in the movie and makes me want to just turn off the subwoofer. For $1500 this is unacceptable. I will contact Sony support but based on the other reviews I don't have much hope. I will never purchase another Sony product again...

I've had a handful of soundbars in my time but never one like this! The first thing that hit me when opening the ST5000 was how heavy it is! Not just the subwoofer but the soundbar itself. I had to order some brackets to mount it under my TV as it was too heavy for my existing mount. Just an FYI for those potential buys.

This is a really beautiful soundbar. The grill for the front is magnetic so it's super easy to put it on or take it off. It really looks great either way. I kind of like it better without. The suboofer is massive and very heavy. It look sgreat with a shiny top and mesh grill on the front. Apart from that there's just an hdmi cable, manuals, and remote in the box. Pretty simple stuff.

Upon first hooking it up I had no sound. A quick reboot fixed that as I had missed the initial setup. It has 3 HDMI inputs with ARC support. It supports 4k HDR so I have my Xbox One X and PS4 Pro connected directly to the soundbar. It also has bluetooth and Chromecast support for wireless connectivity and even has Spotify built right in. Super easy to get your media to this guy.

I've had Atmos support for years through my TV & Xbox but never had the chance to experience it and man was I missing out! I downloaded the Dolby Access app and watched a few demo videos and was blown away. It really feels like you are enveloped in sound. I have a pretty nice Samsung soundbar in my living room and this thing really blows it out of the water. Music sounds amazing through the ST5000 as well. The sub is really powerful and really fills the room. I listened to a variety of tracks and all sounded amazing.

If I have one nitpick it's that the UI can be a little sluggish. It makes it a little slower to switch inputs than I'd like but ultimately it's a soundbar and I'm not using the UI much. It's a pretty minor thing.

Overall I'm super happy with this soundbar. It's a phenomenal upgrade over what I had previously and I can't wait to watch more movies!

Edit -- After about a month and a half had some issues. After some troubleshooting turns out it was interference caused by my wifi. I guess after a reboot my router changed channels and it caused the interference in both my wireless subwoofer and my internet. After adjusting the settings on my soundbar (2 actually!) and my wifi it seems all is well again. Glad to have that one sorted!

I love all the functionality and how well it plats with my TV, 4k player and Google home.

However, I think our living room is too big and in that case you probably need two satellite speakers, which you can't add to this one unfortunately.

I'm gonna try it in our bedroom to see how it might change.

It never lacks bass that's for sure.

My one disappointment is that I can't get it to stop changing inputs - if the TV turns on first, it will switch to that input. Not a huge issue but very, very annoying as the controls to change inputs are not all that friendly (you need to hit plus or minus twice to change the input - once to "wake up" input change mode and then again to actually change the input). I'll likely end up with a smart universal remote to control the order things turn on and off to solve that.

Love this sound bar. Other then the bass being on the weak side everything else is great. Noticeable difference in sound quality in atmos and dts:x. If you try to pin point where the sound is coming from you would come out thinking it's everywhere. Creep me out when I thought someone was whispering behind me in a movie I was watching. Lol

Easy to connect to and set up with our Sony 4k HDTV with HDR. Updated firmware to current level first, which enables full DTS-Master Audio and DTS:X sound as found on many blu ray discs. This sound bar's default sound field setting is "standard," which is an improvement over built-in TV speakers, but not impressive. What IS impressive is the 3D sound field, followed closely by the Movie sound field.

Using the 3D sound field, our great room comes alive with what sounds like a dozen unique speakers and sounds coming from all directions when watching movies with good sound tracks. The WAF (wife acceptance factor) is very high because no rear surround speakers are involved with this sound bar, AND the sound bar/subwoofer "fills" the great room with movie theater/concert hall type sound.

This Sony sound bar, with the newest firmware, plays every type of movie audio sound track in its native format (i.e. DTS 5.1, DTS-Master Audio, and DTS:X as well as all of the Dolby formats). We considered a Sonos Playbar until we learned that it can't play ANY form of multi-channel DTS format sound; it "dumbs" those sound tracks down to 2-channel sound. The competing Samsung playbar can't pass through HDR video signals from either discs or streaming devices.

This play bar is highly recommended if maximum audio format compatibility is as important to you as great 3D sound.

I've had the Sony st5000 for just over 30 days now. The unit has been working well and once dialed in sounds great. Today I came home to find the sound bar would not power on and after troubleshooting learned the sound bar is completely dead. Sony has an incredibly poor customer service and RMA/repair process. I'm now stuck finding a box on my own to return the defective bar to Sony and wait 14 days for it to be 'repaired'. Poor quality and poor service for such a premium priced product. Sony support told me tough luck in getting in back to them for repairs.

This is the first soundbar I've purchased with 7.1 Dolby Atmos. I am amazed at the incredible sound quality! Sony never disappoints. My favorite feature is the option to turn up voices only. I'm always complaining about how much louder music and sound effects are in movies, over voices. This feature makes it so i can turn up voices only, and not have to turn the volume way down when sound effects get really loud. The bass is powerful and you can feel it in your chest. I feel like I'm in a movie theatre! The only complaint I could have, is that the sound bar doesn't come with the 2 screws necessary to wall mount it. But that doesn't take away from the 5-star rating, as the sound quality is absolutely top notch. In addition, its got the DSEE HX audio technology that makes any compressed audio file sound miles better. I am definitely recommending this sound bar to my friends , and I can't wait to show it off!

Definitely delivers the sound quality I was looking for. As an avid movie goer who watches most of his movies at Dolby theaters with Atmos sound, I tested my first movie with non Dolby audio and it sounded great. The immersive sound and rattling bass made it worth the purchase off first listen. Then testing it with music, sports, regular TV shows and different streaming services and all I have to say is that it sounds clear as day. You don't have to raise the volume to obscene levels to enjoy the experience. Even when you do it's down right scary how good and clear it still sounds. I know it's a soundbar that's now been released for two years but I'd put it up their with any of the latest and greatest from Samsung, Yamaha, Bose and or any other brand. It does the job and Sony never disappoints when it comes to sound and quality for their electronics.

 In our family, TV is a way of life. My husband and I have always enjoyed our movie nights and we still do, only now the content is a bit different since adding our daughter to the family. I've always been that person who didn't really care about the quality of sound as long as I could hear, but that opinion has definitely changed since our purchase of the Sony ST5000 sound bar. I can honestly say that I immediately noticed the difference between the volume delivered by our decade old TV and that delivered by the Sony ST5000.

Pros
- Installation was simple and straight forward.
- Quality of product is great and sound quality is excellent
- You can really feel the bass from the subwoofer (funny note on that is our dog did not know what to think at first and he barked at the TV during the times that the bass came through).
- My funny story leads in to the next pro of being able to separately adjust the subwoofer versus the volume from the remote control.
- The sound actually fills the room and we have an open concept house and a vaulted ceiling.
- Bluetooth is also really easy to pair.

Cons
- The only real con that we see is that there are only three HDMI ports and we could use at least one more.
- It's too big for our current entertainment center (this is personal to me, but only barely and we are in the market for a new entertainment center anyway).

All in all, my family is very happy with our purchase and we would recommend the Sony ST5000 to anyone we know if the market for a sound bar.
