Here is Seagate's little dirty secret. The company sells its identical capacity external and internal hard drives under different names: Free Agent, Expansion, Barracuda, and others. Consumers are led to believe that there are various grades and qualities because the outer shells look cosmetically diverse, prices are on a hierarchy, accompanying software are different, and warranties vary..This truth is hidden from consumer - the internal mechanisms for all of these models are identical. This was verified by one of its engineers. The only difference is the accompanying software and warranty. Seagate is the only manufacturer that has a 5-year warranty on their high-end and larger capacity hard drives. Lower-end products have a 1-year warranty..From my experience dating back to the 1980s, I had less problems with the Seagate brand. When this company built its units in America, the products were durable and reliable - they were "tanks." When manufacturing was outsourced to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, the life span became much shorter, and defects were very common. To avoid losses because of too many returns, the firm altered its return policy..In the 1-year or 5-year warranty, the manufacturer replaces the original drive that becomes defective. The replacement is a refurbished that usually breaks down within 3-12 months. Because this second drive has a different serial number and is not new, it does not have a warranty..The fallacy of this policy is this. Assuming your new drive goes bad within a month, Seagate replaces it with a refurb. If the second goes bad within another month, there are no more replacements because the original warranty does not transfer over to the second drive. As a result, you really have a two-month warranty. This scenario happened to me..With "rip-offs" like this, buy the cheapest. The hard drive is mechanically identical to the higher-end product. Despite the longer warranty, it is only good for one return..So, what is the alternative? . . . There is none! . . . There are only two other major hard drive manufacturers, and they are bad. The quality control on Western Digitals is terrible - I usually get less than a one year usage. Unknown to most consumers, the warranty starts when the unit was made - not the sale date. So, if the hard drive sits on the shelf for six months before it is sold, the consumer really has a six-month warranty on the purchase. . . . The hard drive always go defective after a week or month when the warranty date expires. The third firm is Hitachi. The company purchased IBM's hard drive division years ago. The inherited Deskstar technology was horrible. The drive was defective and short-lived. Recently, Hitachi wanted to exit the hard drive business - there were no buyers.

This seems to be a good hard drive. The trick with the sata hard drives is to be sure that it will work on your motherboard... Sata 2 or Sata 3 must have the transfer rate on the advertisements. It is easy to confuse the classifications. This product came as advertise, and arrived in good time.

I deployed 4 of these in May 2011. I installed them in a Synology NAS and used the NAS to back up a Mac Pro with Time Machine. The system has 4 2TB disk and I created a raid 1+0 volume with a total storage capacity of about 5TB. As of this date, only 2TB of the volume is in use.So far, it's worked flawlessly. The negative reviews on some of the consumer grade drives concerned me enough to spend the extra money for this drive, I have not regretted it.The NAS is rack mounted in a climate controlled room and the drive temps run about 40c idle and 43c in use.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding something, but the drive I was shipped was refurbished, and I was expecting a new drive. Furthermore, the drive was DOA. I am running tolls against it now before shipping back to Seagate - but I just reread this product description and I see nothign about it being a refurbished product. BTW, my belief that it is refurbished come from the fact that the label on the drive reads "Seagate Certified Repaired HDD". So, possible I am misreading that statement - sounds like refurbished to me though.

I went to your website because I expected quality and am very dissapointed. The search for the drive was good however when I made the purchase it stated boldy that these were new drives. Within hours of installing these in a DSS200 screen server we began to have reallocated sectors on each of the four drives that were installed in this server. I actually spoke with a gentleman at Data Bug the company who shipped the drives and he informed me that indeed the drives were used and not new as your site stated. These drives will have to be replaced soon and the cost for the drives being used is not acceptable. Data Bug did tell me they would refund my money after the drives have been replaced which I have ordered drives from another company. You should not make statements regarding the product that is not true I doubt that I use your site in the future.

I had one ST3500514NS, 500 GB Seagate Constellation ES drive as my system drive. I also had 2 X 1 TB WD Black drives as data drives in my desktop system. I installed the Constellation drive in 2010 along with a MB upgrade. This drive was rock solid until Friday morning. It failed without warning, and cannot be accessed. There is a burn mark on the PCB next to the power connector, so I suppose that is the failure. The WD drives are still being recognized by the BIOS, and the MB passes POST. I have requested warranty service, and Seagate is sending an advance drive for the $10 this service costs. All I can say is that the failure is no doubt a $.01 part on the PCB that is costing me $$$ in time and money and headaches. Can I buy a good drive anywhere?

Not a whole lot to say about these. They work with a HP P410 RAID Controller, w/ 5.12 firmware. I have 4 of these in a single RAID5 Array. Not a lick of trouble, but I don't expect any either. They do use a bit of power, but, these, in my HP Microserver, draws around 75w idle. Probably would do better if the Controller would support spin-down, but, since I don't use this server much, I've configured it to use Wake On LAN, and setup to automatically shutdown after 1hr of being idle. Maybe that'll test the spin-up cycling of these drives...but I figure they'll be good for it.UPDATE: 6/6/2012. I thought these drives were doing great, but I ran a diagnostics report from my Smart Array Controller, and, turns out one of them has 1 re-located sector. These drives really have seen minimal hours - as I mentioned earlier in my review, that I have it configured to shut down after an hour of idle time - so, for the most part, it stays turned off except when I need soemthing. I don't know what the threshold is for a failed drive with my controller, but once that happens, it's RMA time with Seagate. While I'll allow that 1 failed sector isn't the end of the world...it sure does make one a bit more suspicious and a little more paranoid. Then again, that's why I'm running these in RAID5 for just this reason.UPDATE: 6/11/2012. ran a disk utility against each of these drives and they're spotless - no re-located sectors or anything. Nuts. I guess my Array Controller decided to mark one of them as re-located, and the other 3 not. Odd. Really odd...but these drives are good.FINAL UPDATE: 6/16/2012. Ran some other utilities and sure enough the one drive has a relocated sector.

I purchased 2 new Seagate Contellation Hard drives model ST32000644NS from Amazon.com for my ReadyNas storage box on May 2011. When I received them I was shocked when I opened the mailing box, there was 2 Seagate Hard Drives each inside a plastic pouch, no manufacturer sealed box, no pamphlet or catalog, nothing but the 2 plastic pouch each has 1 hard drive. When I installed them, the ReadyNas showed data on one of them and the temperature was much higher than the other drive. That means at least one of the drives was used before and was resold to me, otherwise why the 2 drives were without the manufacturer sealed boxes and one of them had data on it.I contacted the seller at Amazon.com, they denied that the drives were used before, I returned them back to the seller for full refund along with a copy of the ReadyNas report that shows that there was data on one of the drives but they deducted 20% restocking, that's not fair. I purchased 2 new hard drives and I should receive 2 new ones inside the manufacturer sealed box, not 2 used ones.I'm writing this review to tell everybody, be cautious when you buy expensive product online, the price difference for the same product is big because you dont get the quality you paid for and that what hapened with me. This is the first time to buy online and it will be the last, very bad experience. I still insist on the full refund.

I have at least six of these Seagate Drives of the Barracuda ES.2 and/or Constellation ES group. They've never let me down. If you have data which is important to you and you want to avoid the **trauma** of data loss due to drive failure, I suggest that you pay the extra money and buy these. You can't really understand the pain of data loss unless you've experienced it yourself. If that has never happened to you, read on.Perform this experiment: Buy a cheaper drive (which means lower quality-control standards) and make a note how much money you saved by doing that. Later, when (and if) your drive crashes and data recovery can't get it back, consider the money that you saved. After the crash, the money that you saved will look very small!I've had two major drive crashes in my lifetime. I was able to get back about 10% by paying for data recovery. There will **not be** a third drive crash for me!Go to the Seagate Data Sheet (on the Seagate website) for this drive to get more details regarding the mean time between failures and the warranty period.... compared to other Seagate Drives. Get to know the significance of the "Constellation ES" and the "Barracuda ES.2" names. While you're on the Seagate website, look around for their Data Sheets for their other drives. Disregard all the sales talk. Just look at the specs. My hard drive actual hands-on experience is limited to Seagate and Western Digital. I don't know about other brands.

High performance and reliable. Worth the price if you need build a high performance RAID system or for servers. You may not need it for desktops or low end server.Note: do an extensive test (e.g., using WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics extended test) before using it, especially use it as a stand alone disk. You will be amazed of disks failed to pass this type of test for large capacity disk ( > 1 TB), even for high quality disk like this one.

I have several of these in use with no problems. That is more than I can say for most 1-TB and larger drives.NOTE: This series of drives are NOT certified by Seagate or several RAID controllers manufacturers for RAID. If you have problems with this drive in RAID, it is your own fault and not a defect in the drive. If you do not understrand that RAID controllers have special demands on a disk drive, then you probably should not be using RAID.

I bought two of these drives for a new QNAP NAS I installed at the house for backing up all my PC's and media. They have been running non-stop for over a month now with no issues at all. These are heavy duty drives and I expect them to run for years without any problems. My only concern was the packing when they arrived...not the usual shock absorbing type that I am use to. They were in individual boxes with little packing. This obviously had no effect on them, as they both fired right up.As soon as I recover a little in the old bank account, I plan on buying two more and then will setup a RAID 10 on the QNAP. At this point in time, I highly recommend this drive for anyone wanting to spend a little extra for long term piece of mind.

This enterprise class drive was installed in a NAS RAID unit in which three other 2TB Western Digital enterprise class drives had been installed for about a year. The unit is accessed 24/7. The WD drives, after more than 10,000 hours, still have 0 reallocated sectors. After initializing this Seagate drive in the NAS it showed 0 reallocated sectors. However within a couple of days it began to show several and then several more. The reallocated sector count growth may have stopped at that point, but I didn't want to take a chance. I returned the unit to Amazon and purchased another WD 2TB enterprise drive. This was about a month ago and the WD drive still has a reallocated sector count of 0.

Excellent drive thus far (6 weeks usage) .... let's see how it lasts longer term.As usual, quick delivery.Pricier than I like (hence only 4 stars) but if it performs for 5+ years it will be well worth $$$ for critical server data storage.
