In the past, I had much better luck with Seagate drives than with Western Digital. I think any more, they're pretty much on equal footing, with proponents and detractors for each brand. This review isn't so much about the drive itself as it is about trying to replace one under warranty. This isn't a sour grapes review, I'm only writing it to let others know what they can expect if they attempt to replace a drive under warranty. My existing drive failed Seatools, and was not repairable. Since I wasn't in any particular hurry to get the drive back, I got an RMA (order number) from Seagate, scrounged up a box and acceptable foam padding and shipped the original drive back on 12/15/2012. I received an acknowledgement that they had received my drive on 12/28/2012. The replacement was shipped on 1/3/2013 and was delivered on 1/9/2013. I ran Seatools short test, which passed. At this point I reloaded the OS and did all the updates to use as a testbed. A couple days later, I decided to run Seatools long test which takes approximately 2 ? hours to complete. At the end, the drive failed with something n the neighborhood of 100 bad blocks, which I repaired. I then re-ran the long test and had another 100 or so bad bocks, which I also repaired. I then attempted a full erase, which failed also. I attempted to contact tech support during their normal working hours via both live chat and phone. No one was available .At that point I decided to RMA this drive also. Rather than ship the drive back and wait for another, I decided to use the "Premium Advanced Replacement", which is supposed to include 2 day shipping and a prepaid return shipping label. The price is reasonable at $9.95, considering that the UPS shipping on the first drive was almost that much. I placed this order on 1/12/13.In the meantime, I decided to re-run Seatools long test and see how many failures the "repaired" drive had. It took 6 runs to get a no failures result, which is over 400 bad blocks. At the time I placed the order for the second warranty drive I didn't realize that Seatools stops at 100 or so bad blocks. I only figured that out later. In the over all scheme of things, I'm not sure how common that many bad blocks is, but I wasn't willing to accept a repaired drive with that many defects.Anyway, back to the saga... The 2nd replacement was finally shipped on 1/17/13 and arrived on 1/21/13.The bottom line is, so far I've spent about $20.00 on shipping, spent a lot of hours repairing an already repaired drive, and what I have now is a used drive that was sent back to Seagate for some unknown problem which I'll never fully trust. All that for a drive that I could probably buy new for $75.00. Thanks, but next time I'll take a pass on all this and go with new.The bottom line is that the drive is worth a 3, since I don't think WD drives are any better or worse. The warranty replacement process gets a very generous 2.

Length:: 1:02 MinsThis drive (the 750 GB version) failed completely in 8 days. It made the much reported, very loud clicking noise on day 7 and failed completely on day 8 with the same noise. Seagate's Seatools diagnostic utility said the drive was fine and passed all tests when I ran it after the loud noise on day 7 - it tempoarily worked for a brief period of time. The failure of Seagate's Seatools to report serious problems with it's own drives has also been much reported. And compounding that, Seagate states that if its diagnostics pass, then the drive is OK (!!!) - clearly and obviously not the case. This is the second recent Seagate hard drive to fail completely within one month on a PC I maintain. I have also had a Seagate Flex drive fail in 4 days. I maintain a total of about 12 PCs, a few from Dell, and only the recent Seagate drives have failed. And they have failed so soon after first use. I personally, and others I work with and have talked to, can unfortunately no longer trust any drive from Seagate. I haven't bought a Seagate drive in 18 months (not counting the failed Flex drive) due to the reported problems and won't until I am sure their problems are under control, but Dell continues to use them in their desktops and so I run into these failing drives. This Seagate that failed was in a RAID 0 array and could have lost the 800+ GBs stored on the array if it had not been all backed up to an external drive, a move I insisted on when I saw the drives were Seagate drives.I have added a video to let people hear the clicking sound the drive generally makes when it fails. If you hear this sound it may be too late to copy any data off it, but on both the failing Seagates I saw the drive came back for a day or two after the noise before failing completely (noise continuous, drive not operational at all). Absolutely stop putting any critical data on the drive, and NO MATTER what Seagate's diagnostic utility programs say: stop using the drive. The drive in the video passed Seagate's diagnostics, getting 100% green on every "test", when it temporarily worked after first making that noise. Please Seagate: fix the problems with your hard drives and make reliable drives again - I used your drives for 15+ years without problems (at least no more than any other drives). At last ccount about 130 of the 600 reviews on this drive were 1 star! That is beyond atrocious, espeically given the consequences so many will face if the drive fails.

After some bad experiences with Western Digital changing drive firmware and removing features without warning, I decided to try some Seagate drives. I bought five of these over the last couple years: three went into one enclosure, two into another. The two enclosures were different brands, different SATA controllers, different locations, etc.It turns out that "unmitigated trash" is perhaps too kind a phrase to describe these drives. At two years of runtime in a cool, vibration-free, friendly environment, every single one of the five drives has failed. One failed catastrophically, repeatedly clicking loudly for about 60 seconds and then just disappearing from the SATA bus, never to talk again. Two failed semi-catastrophically: SMART reported rapidly increasing Reallocated Sector Count and eventually the drives became unwriteable. The last two are rapidly on their way to failing, showing Reallocated Sector Count starting to creep up by about one per hour. They're technically already above the level that the Seagate customer support forums say indicates a failing drive, but they're still walking and talking. Clearly I'm not using them for anything but a spectacle now.Do not buy. Ever. In fact, probably wise to just stay away from Seagate for a few years until they get their manufacturing issues straightened out.

In which she came back with it was a bare hard drive and needed to be floor matted. amazon then sent a another letter telling her what i said in first place. and she came back as I lied and changed my story. Amazon then replied back as it was there typo error in the first place. so we waited and waited. no answer back finally amazon filed a to z claim and after 1 1/2 months after i got it i finally got my money back from them. and told them if they wanted the hard drive back they needed to sent a return label with paid shipping. they never answered that either. SO WONT BUY FROM THEY BECAUSE IF IT IS DEFECTIVE YOU WELL NOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK

BACKGROUND: Seagate Barracuda 750GB hard drive on our PC started going bad after a mere year and a half. No data loss, but drive would intermittently "freeze up" the computer so it might, for example, take 2 minutes to launch an application. (I found out later on the internet that other people have had similar problems with the drive and that it might be a design flaw.)PROPOSED SOLUTION: Buy the exact same drive from Amazon Prime, and with $3-$4 overnight shipping, I can have it in 24 hours. With the exact same drive, I knew there would be no compatibility problems - should be pop in and go, right?PACKAGING: I know I'm supposed to provide feedback on this separately, but... lots of others have commented, multiple years ago, on the poor packing job. I assumed by 2011 Amazon would have fixed it, right? Apparently not - item was still shipped in tiny box with minimal padding. This may have contributed to its failure. (Ironically, almost everything else we've ever ordered from Amazon has been overkill on packaging. Maybe they're just inexperienced with sensitive electronics.)SURPRISE: The drive I received was actually marked as a refurbished drive! I bought it "new" from Amazon. I didn't bother reading the fine print, so I can't tell you if "new" means truly new or "new refurbished."VERDICT: Upon booting the PC, the Bios complained that the drive status was "bad". I continued the boot and tried using it anyway. It worked for about 15 minutes, then the drive disappeared from Windows Explorer... Windows failed to recognize it. Rebooted, and same thing: Worked for a short time, then disappeared.RESOLUTION: So much for my "easy" Amazon solution. After reading further poor Seagate reviews, and after being disappointed with TWO Seagates now, I decided to go with Western Digital. On Amazon WD's are generally $20 more, which I'd gladly be willing to pay for a better drive. BUT... Best Buy sells WD's at Seagate prices, and also sells mostly WD's and only a few Seagates, which tells you something. Bought the new Caviar Green 1GB hard drive. I had to drive 40 miles to the store to buy this. BUT... worked PERFECTLY first time. It's now been several weeks, NO problems with the drive whatsoever. I would definitely recommend Western Digital over Seagate.RETURN: We tried to use the Amazon website to return the dead Barracuda, but that part of the website didn't work (ironically, the ONLY part we've ever had a problem with). Tried other browsers, too. So had to Email Amazon customer service. We are pleased to report, though, that they promptly sent us a return authorization, we shipped the drive back, and we did get a full refund without hassle (aside from the initial website problem). So kudos to Amazon for this.

My parents ASUS computer died. They bought a new computer and were throwing out the one that died. I told them I would take the computer and see if I could fix whatever the problem was. Turned out it was just the hard drive. I ordered the original drive for replacement which was this Seagate Barracuda 7200 1 TB. It arrived at my doorstep 3 days after ordering via standard mail delivery. Although I've never replaced a hard drive before, it literally took 10 minutes to take the housing off the tower, remove 4 screws, undo the data & power cables replace the hard drive and reassemble the unit. Installed the recovery disc and the computer was back to original condition in minutes. I've had no issues since installing this hard drive and the parents now have their own computers instead of sharing. Well worth the $83.00

I use these drives at work as part of a RAID 1 system and always keep spares around. Thus far the drives seem stable. I get data errors once in a while but that is probably from the controller board. Reformat and install and they are good for another 6 months. Thus far have not tossed any drives with a data error, just recycled them to another computer and they have been stable. Inexpensive and good performance.

Here is my review of the OEM, Seagate 12th series ST31000528AS 1 TB Barracuda dual platter perpendicular recording very spaciousg SATA desktop hard drive. This particular drive comes with platters with density level of 500 GB each. For this model line, there are various sizes ranging from 160 GB to 1 TB in size. I've noticed particularly, larger capacity drives comes in SATA only. It's getting harder and harder to buy a hard drive in the EIDE form, because EIDE interface is on its way out. It's being phased out by most hard drive manufacturer as well as computer motherboard manufacturer. For those of you with older computers that has only EIDE interface, you may be able to connect your computer to a SATA hard drive or optical drive by using a converter card. This card is inserted in the back of the hard drive converting a SATA drive to EIDE.I've purchased this drive to use as storage only, and petition it as one large petition of 931 GB. After installation of this drive on my computer, I use Seagate's excellent free DiscWizard software to petition the hard drive. The process is relatively quick unlike using Windows to do this. I've downloaded this hard drive utility program from the Seagate website. This is a 128 MB download and may take a while on a slower Internet connection. This program will only run if you have at least a Seagate or Maxtor hard drive on board. This hard drive utility program is really a stripped-down version of Acronis True Image Home. Partly because of this excellent utility program that I decided to stick with Seagate instead of defecting to Western Digital instead for this purchase. With this program, you can clone your old hard drive to the new under Windows or using the bootable CD R which you can make with this program. You can use this program to backup your entire hard drive as well and save it on your storage drive. If anything should happen to your Windows installation, all you would have to do is to restore it using this program in its entirety. Doing it this way, you would not have to install Windows plus updates and all of the programs that you use all over again. You can do this by just simply inserting the bootable CD, restart the computer and then follow the prompts to restore your computer. Unlike previous programs of this nature, this program does an excellent job of it. After the cloning or restore, everything appears to work fine. In my example for instance using maximum compression, I was able to save my 37 GB which was the total of my "C" Windows petition as a 19 GB file on my storage drive. This unreliable problem with the 11th series because its firmware problems which hurt Seagate's reputation tremendously. It's also because of that, that Seagate reduced the warranty from five years to three for consumer grade hard drives. Although, the server class NS series hard drives still remains at five years warranty. According to some of the professional reviews, they reported that this hard drive is extremely fast in fact almost as fast as one running at 10,000 RPM. I tried benchmarking this hard drive using Sandra. The test result shows a starting point at 129 MB a second read speed with a drive index of 102. The test results shows that this hard drive is slightly faster than my previous 11th series Seagate hard drive. This hard drive runs extremely quiet and relatively cool with temperature not exceeding 32°C on my computer so far. This is about 5°C less when compare with my previous hard drive installed in the same position under the same conditions. This according to Hard Disk Sentinel, the hard drive monitoring program. Because of the fast read and write speed of this hard drive as well as my previous one which was the Seagate 11th series, I was able to copy my files over from my old to this one in relatively short time. The old drive will be installed on my old computer to be used as storage or as Windows drive.Update July 17, 2009: So far, This drive has been performing extremely well and I am quite happy with the performance. Since purchased, according to S.M.A.R.T. I have 164 hours on the clock. It hasn't produced any unusual noises or other glitches.Update August 16, 2009: According to S.M.A.R.T. the hard drive had a minor problem, one reallocated section moved to the spare section. Other than this, the drive still works extremely well. As long as I'm not getting more new bad sections constantly it should be all right. Regardless of what, I think Seagate is slipping in quality control. Even the best of hard drives comes manufactured with bad section, that get mapped out during the first initialization process at the factory so it doesn't show up under S.M.A.R.T.. This is usually the case, why when you receive the drive it appears perfect.

(I have the 1.5TB ST31500341AS, firmware CC1H)I really loved this drive up until about 6PM last night. I use it to hold my media, and I've never had any issues with performance - I can wirelessly stream HD video from this HDD in my office PC to my home theater PC without any hiccups. And then last night, as I was working (and not using that drive for anything intensive, I might add), I started getting terrifying messages from my HDD monitor software AND from Windows - the reallocated sector count was suddenly through the roof, and this drive was ready to die.I checked the logs on my hard drive monitoring software, and between 6:00PM and 7:00PM, the "health" of the reallocated sector count had nose-dived from 100% to 12%. About 24 hours later, it's at 2%...Apparently I'm not the only one with the issue - after doing some browsing and troubleshooting, I found that this was a common enough problem with this model, and Seagate gave me an RMA number without even being asked (their recovery software popped up with a "Warranty Code" after it told me it couldn't solve the problem). That was disappointing, and I'm still not sure how it happened so quickly. The drive's under 1 year old, and there wasn't any physical reason for its reliability to suddenly tank (no jarring of the desktop tower, drive temperature wasn't too bad, etc).So why am I still giving it 3 stars?1. S.M.A.R.T is a really nice feauture; there's nothing worse than instant hard drive death with no warning at all. At least I can still salvage anything valuable from this drive before it's completely broken.2. Seagate's customer support rep was fantastic. I asked her if it was possible to get a replacement drive BEFORE returning this one (so I don't have to juggle 1.5TB of data in the meantime), and she was able to give me a free "priority return", which essentially means that I'll get my replacement drive in the next 5 days, with a box and prepaid packing slip I can use to return the defective drive. Usually this costs $9.99, but she waived the fee since they couldn't guarantee 2-day delivery. My experience might not be typical, but so far it hasn't been that bad. Sure, it's been inconvenient, but compared to my last HDD failure in 2005, this was a cakewalk.

At present, the only things that i can say are:it was well packaged. it worked out of the box, it seems to perform well (relative to its RAID partners). It was inexpensive.

This is a duel review for two products that I bought with the idea that they would be used together and they did this well. The products are the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 Terabyte (1.5TB) SATA/300 7200RPM 32MB Hard Drive and the SATA to PATA/IDE Hard Drive Interface Adapter. I hope this will help somebody who has the same problem that I had. I have a Dell Precision WorkStation 350 computer that had a 40GB IDE hard drive. I wanted to upgrade to a larger drive and settled on the 1.5 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, which is SATA II. My old computer does not have a SATA connection so I bought the PATA to SATA adapter with the idea that I would plug the adapter into the hard drive and attach it to my external IDE hard drive case (cage) then plug it into the USB port. I had to leave the Seagate drive outside the case and only attach the electrical connections since the adapter is too large to fit into the cage with the hard drive, as expected. I then used the windows Computer Manager (right click My Computer to open then click disk mangement under storage) to initialize the drive and format it. After this, the computer recognized the drive when I opened My Computer. I used the Seagate Disk Wizard to clone my old IDE hard drive onto the new SATA II drive. This worked great. I then checked the Seagate drive and all my data, including the operating system (XP Service Pack 3), was on the Seagate. So far so good. I then turned off the computer and swapped hard drives. That is I removed the old IDE drive completely and replaced it with the Seagate SATA II and adapter. I then reassembled my computer, crossed my fingers and turned it on. To my suprise and delight, the computer came on and the operating system started up and ran flawlessly with the Seagate SATA II drive running Windows XP Sevice pack 3 and the computer recognized the drive as having 1.5 TB. After several hours, I shut down the computer and tried to restart it and this is where things went bad. The BIOS started then I got the error message "\windows\system32\config\system file missing or corrupt". I could get no further than this error message no mater what I tried. I finally decided to start over, put the drives back into the original positions and reclone the old drive back onto the new drive. I swapped the drives after the procedure and again the computer worked perfectly with the cloned data on the Seagate that was now running in my old computer. Then I shut the computer off and tried to restart it and got the same error message "\windows\system32\config\system file missing or corrupt" again. The fix. After many hours of research and trying to fix the problem it came down to one simple thing. The old computer of course had an old BIOS, which limited the hard drive capacity to 137GB so even though the old BIOS recognized the SATA II hard drive, it could not use it after a shut down. My old BIOS was version AO1 and after an up grade to version AO2, the computer recognized the new Seagate SATA II drive perfectly, even after many shut down/restart cycles.Even though I had some problems with the installation (not the fault of either product), I give both products top ratings since they both work well together. The only draw backs are that the PATA to SATA adapter is somewhat bulky and the connection to the drive is not very tight although it is an adequate fit. I have had no problems with the Seagate Drive. It is fast, quiet and easy to install.

This item has met my expectations as a replacement item for upgrading my system to keep current with current technology at homes today. I would acquire more of these items to finish up my other systems and neighbors as well. Seagate continues to be a name to compete with or against depending on your perspective. As long as there's power to operate, Seagate will continue to be my choice.

I bought 3 of these drives for a RAID 0 array on my main computer on Sep 10, 2009. One of those drives failed yesterday (Aug 10, 2012), approximately 3 years after purchase.I use my computer more than average as I work from home and my computer runs multiple virtual machines all the time. And the same computer is used for video gaming after work, on average about 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.I have expected these drives to last longer than 3 years (was expecting 5 at least), disappointed with the reliability. They are very fast and have large capacity though, but if you run these drives heavily, plan to replace them at around the 3 year mark.
