This drive works but came without a box - just wrapped in antistatic. It has a label that says spare drive. I guess it was "extra" from some other mass drive customer? We'll see if it was stored and handled properly if it lasts.

I was very impressed with the data throughput and how small, quiet this drive is. This unit comes with a very capable backup utility but that didn't fit my application. Only minor beef I have is that given the capacity I thought it was just a little over priced.

Didn't even last 4 months before it started Grinding away. Contacted Seagate and they told me to contact the people that sold it to me!Within 4 months the thing started making terrible grinding and hissing sounds and then quit.I am coming back to edit the review because "MTX GROUP" is who sold it. DON"T BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM! They asked me to return the product and that they would send me a replacement when thy received it. Delivery confirmation shows that they received it, but in my many attempts to contact them there is no word as to the replacement. I guess I just donated $100 to a MTX Group that apparently doesn't exist anymore....

Well I've had 2 of these hard drives in my computer for about 3.5 years now in a RAID 0. I've never had an issue with them, they are quiet, and since they are still working after 3.5 years, I would say quite robust. I've moved my computer several times, and taken it to friends houses on several occasions as well. No problems whatsoever. But it's about time to upgrade.I figured I'd post a small review since the only review on these is 1 of 5 stars. I'm going to be upgrading to some Western Digital drives though. Two 1TB, 7200rpm, 64MB cache, SATAIII connector.I would say that was a pretty good jump.

Avoid this drive. Completely failed after very light use over the course of 2 years (less than an hour a week.) Make sure you keep your data backed up and as soon as you start hearing beeps or clicks get ready for the drive to crap out. At least I could repair it a couple times to get part of the info off the disk before it completely died.

I've had this drive for two years. It was quiet (lucky compared to some other reviewers). It developed HUGE problems all at once. It suddenly had a large number of bad sectors, and every time the system tries to access those, the drive freezes up, lights go off, and it takes Windows Explorer down with it. Since anti-virus software tends to scrutinize things while the system is idle, I've ended up with random crashes. Its connected via USB so the only way to get Windows to release its hold is to ungracefully unplug the drive since the eject USB function is also frozen, so Windows amplifies the original fault. I can usually get 4 years service from most drives before failure, so this one is on the low side.

Got 2 of this and I must say they are VERY noisy. Used both on a RAID 5 scheme but After some months 1 of them starded to report read/write errors. Finally it became unstable and I lost the entire RAID partition. Seagate replaced for a brand new 7200.12 series wich is perfect. Wish I can replace the other one too.

At the moment 500GB - 1 TB drives are selling at very good prices. I tend to buy Seagates due to their 5 year warranties though I've never had to take advantage of it.I've purchased 30-40 HDs in the past for my PCs and friends PC's which I helped put together and I've never had any serious problems with any of the brands including Maxtor, Fujitsu, Quantum, WD, Hitachi and Seagate. Theres always been a group of people who rabidly bash one brand or another, including Seagate. Probably the brand most often mentioned is Maxtor, but I've never had any big problems with any of them. Maxtor is now owned by Seagate so even if you didnt like them in the past, they may be different now though, like I mentioned --- I've never had problems with them even in the pre-Seagate takeover, days.I did have a warranty replacement issue with WD when they recalled several HD models eons ago. Their service was fantastic, they cross shipped the drive and they were very quick in their response. The Seagate I recently purchased, came directly from Amazon and it was shipped in a sort of loose fashion, inside the box. I could feel it sliding around which had me a bit worried. However, it's working fine and I havent had any problems with it. The HD I bought was an OEM drive. It came with only the drive in a bag and the usual adequate packing. It did not come with any cables, mounting rails or screws.Amazon now has some of the best prices for increasing amounts of PC hardware and musical instrument items, which they werent that competitive with in the past. Now, with their low prices and free shipping, its my preferred source for many PC parts and an increasing number of other products. I've also received a WD hard disk from Amazon a week ago.

A pretty standard drive, I've had one of these in my main machine for over a year now. The drive is fine, a tad hot and makes some noise, but I've had no issues. I treat my stuff kind of hard sometimes and it takes it all in stride. No bad sectors, no weird noises, just a reliable workhorse.I picked up a second one for an external hard drive, but though I'm thinking maybe that was a mistake. I don't think it gets nearly hot enough to hurt the drive or the enclosure even on a hot day, but it does get noticeably toasty. Sometimes I'll run a fan across the enclosure to drop the temp a little. I'm thinking one of the WD Green drives might be a better option for a passively cooled external hard drive enclosure. For an internal system though, I fully recommend this one. While louder than some drives, the noise on these things isn't that bad; I for one kind of like hearing when it is reading/writing.

As noted in other reviews this is a bare drive, wrapped only in a thin plastic anti-static bag. In stark contrast to every other hard drive that I have ordered over the Internet, Amazon provides almost no protective packaging for the drive in shipment. When I opened the package from Amazon, tossed on my front porch by the UPS driver, I noticed a few air-packs on top of the drive and ABSOLUTELY NO PROTECTION BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIVE AND THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX. In other words, the bare drive was placed in the box, a few air-packs were placed on top, and the package was shipped. It is worth adding that Seagate will void the drive's 5-year warranty if "the drive experiences shock in excess of 350 Gs." How much is 350Gs? I am not sure, but I assume dropping the drive qualifies. What this means is that Amazon's shipping practice for bare drives may void the warranty. The drive may not fail right away, but when it does, Seagate may not replace it if Seagate determines that the drive was dropped.Until Amazon changes their packaging practices, I don't plan on buying any more bare drives from Amazon.Update: October 15, 2008Amazon exchanged the drive that had been poorly packed for one that was much more sensibly and protectively packaged -- double-boxed with the inner box resembling the retail box, where the drive is suspended and cradled at both ends by shock-absorbing plastic.

I had a ST3500630AS in a well cooled Antec case. The drive started with the "click of death" about 12 months after I installed it. I ran some deep scans and several sectors were found to be defective (though the data was recovered). Clicks started up again and finally the OS (XP Pro) got incredibly slow due to the number of necessary re-reads (and presumably re-writes). Replaced the drive and did a successful disk clone and now the system is MUCH faster (lending credence to the theory that that slowness was due to the ST3500630AS starting to fail). It was still under warranty, so it's heading back to Seagate.I usually have very good luck with Seagate, so hopefully this one was just an anomaly.

This is a great price for a SATA 500 gigabyte hard drive. Be warned - it comes with no supporting documentation, nor does it come with a SATA cable. But the installation instructions are readily available at the Seagate website, and a SATA cable can be had for 6 or 7 bucks. In addition, you'll need to buy a hard drive cradle or caddy that fits your particular hard drive bay. Installation was pretty easy for me - plug the cable into one of my two SATA ports, hook up the power tab from the computer's power supply, and bang - you're in business with the most affordable hard drive of its type. Note - I've heard some people complain that the drive is noisy. This was the case for me at first - because the SATA cable I used had a rather bulky connector which stuck out from the hard drive and made contact with the computer case. The case itself amplified the hard drive noise. A little pad of thin rubber solved the problem completely. Keep in mind I use my computer as a digital audio work station on which I produce a radio show - so any noise would be a real problem when I record from my microphone. It's not been an issue thus far.

I've got two of these Seagate ST3500630AS with Firmware 3.AAD in a LaCie external RAID drive and WOW! are they NOISY.The external drive has a very solid and heavy aluminum housing and even that cannot dampen the horrible racket that these drives emit. It also has a temperature controlled cooling fan that runs continuously after the drives warm up due to their higher heat output. They exhibit high levels of two kinds of noise: 1- a rough sounding spindle, or motor noise that is especially noticeable upon startup and 2- incredibly loud and distracting "seek" noise. Worse, the drives often "calibrate" themselves which results in a huge amount of seek noise even when not being accessed or even when not hooked up to a computer. These drives do seem fast and may be suitable for use in a server environment or a loud industrial setting but are a poor choice for home use by the non-deaf. Fortunately for me, mine are in an external drive used for backups so they don't run continuously.Even so, I'll be replacing them soon with cooler and quieter drives from another company.

This hard drive worked out perfectly for my Netgear RND2150 ReadyNAS Duo 500 GB Desktop Network Attached Storage. You will need to buy some mounting screws though to install it in the ReadyNAS Duo. It was easy to install and works perfectly. The packaging was also excellent. It came in an anti-static bag and lodged between two custom plastic pieces to keep it from moving around in the box.
