When it comes to hard drives, like most people I shop for a name brand at the best price. You never know about how good a hard drive is until you've used it for a couple years (if it last that long) This review is kudos to Amazon for making my shopping/purchases simple and backed by their reputable name.

I bought 2 of theese discs and both were in a bad state. I inmediately informed the seller and they offered me replacement of both pieces. It was urgent to replace them because I needed HDD for work, and I live in Costa Rica so I could't wait so much time. I had already bought two WD 640GB Black Caviar, so the seller had no problem in making me a refund. Excellent service. Thank you very much.

Much like everyone else, I read many of the reviews but made the decision to buy the drive anyway. I used the drive for the first month and was not experiencing any issues. However, I had read much of the talk about access problems and the recommendation to turn off Journaling on the that drive under when running OSX. I will admit, once I did it did "appear" to be quicker, but since I'm not running any real measurable performance metrics, I can't say for sure. Regardless, I left Journaling disabled on that drive for what risk it may (or may not) be (supposedly good for rebuilding the file tables in case of power loss during system writes?).For reference, I'm running this in my Mac Pro as my "Home" drive for users. It is not my main system drive (as it doesn't need that much space). So I am accessing it quite often. I'm considering purchasing a second for backup purposes. Since most of the users that have run into issues note that they are in RAID configurations, I'm not planning on putting it into my system as a RAID of my current 1.5tb, but attached externally.I can't responsibly tell anyone not to be cautious, but I did want to leave my experience and impressions as, from my perspective, the drive seems to be getting a bad rap. It may have issues in certain configurations, but as I'm using it, it's working quite well.

After a brutal introduction with faulty firmware that caused many users to hate this drive, Seagate has finally got it right and produced a firmware that allows this monster to work to its full potential. Now shipping with the most recent firmware, this is a fantastic backup drive or media storage drive. I use it in my home server as the storage location for all my media. It works great for that purpose, and with a media extender, plays all my movies (most are standard definition DVDs) flawlessly over my n-band wireless signal. I can stream to my wife's laptop, either of my TVs (via media extender) and it all works flawlessly. I don't have any issue with cache dumping. So if you are reading all the negative reviews, consider that it appears the many initial problems have been taken care of.I have some reservations about the long term quality of this dive, but for that, only time will tell. I think I will get another one and mirror it with my current drive so that if one crashes I have a backup. Seagate has a good warranty, so I'm not TOO concerned about it.Once a real nightmare because of bad firmware, now a great and reasonably priced media/back up drive, this one is a good investment assuming it stays healthy over time.

The drive seems ok now that I have It working. I went to seagate web sight for help to get the drive to work, after I installed It.I found many pages of Info on how to get this drive to work, none of It helped.I finally went to Geek Squad where I purchased computer and they had It going in less than 10 min.Next time I will pay a little more and get better support.

I purchased two of these drives from another vendor when they first came out. I've never had a problem with them, but I'm backing up everything just in case. It looks like the reviews are about 40% negative and 60% positive with nothing in the middle, which is not good. That tells me that the problem is either off or on and therefore likely to be a quality control issue. These drives are batch tested, like most mass produced items these days. Pressure from the "bean counters" upstairs leads to sample shopping, so batches that should be rejected are instead shipped. When that happens, production problems don't get fixed because there is no feedback. It's all about greed folks.History shows that Seagate knows how to make great hard drives, but right now their priorities are out of whack. Just be thankful they don't make peanut products or some of us might not be here. Still, I'm willing to take a chance since I was lucky the first time. I ordered two more drives and am keeping my fingers crossed. Hey, they're 1.5TB! ;-)

A few years back, Seagate was the bomb on long term warranties and excellent drives. Just look at their reviews NOW and that has changed. Yes, you can get a warranty for 5 years. Heck of a lot of good it does you when it crashes.I had my 1.5 TB less than 6 months before it gave the "click of death". They sent a replacement, which they make REAL convenient for [...] bucks. Otherwise you can wait a week or two or more. Considering how many of these 1.5 drives crash, from people I know, my count: 4, this is a revenue stream in itself.I decided to pay more for and get a WD, which has better reviews of late, even if shorter warranties. My older Seagates from 5 years ago and WD's that survived are still going strong. But these new ones, THIS 1.5 TB drive, deserves a class-action lawsuit all it's own.I won't be buying Seagate until I see dramatic improvement in their drive quality.

I bought 18 of these and I wish I hadn't. Of the 18, two didn't even accept the firmware update and had to be swapped... of the remaining, two couldn't make it through a format and no longer respond, and three keep dropping out of raid configurations... they work for a while, then they quit. It would be one thing if they failed from the start, but this has taken place over three months. What do I have to expect in the next three months? They never should have shipped. Now I'm getting drives with Firmware CC1G as replacements for the SD1B ones that don't work properly. Guess what, the CC1G are working properly and they have yet another firmware update I'm suppposed to do.They just aren't reliable so beware and so far I'm not getting any warm fuzzies from Seagate about resolving the issue.

I love my new drives. They have worked well in my mac pro for over a month now (mirrored). They are noisier than my previous smaller drives, but that hasn't affected their operation. I checked the serial numbers with the website and found they are not affected by the firmware issue. My main disappointment is with the way Amazon shipped them. Their packing job reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where they couldn't spare a square. The two drives arrived in two small boxes that were in one larger box. Each small box had one small sheet of small bubble wrap (completely pointless). Each drive rattled around in the small box. The small boxes then rattled around in the big box. I really hope that all that rattling didn't decrease their life expectancy! These drives came directly from amazon according to the box labels (not a 3rd party).

I purchased two 500 GB single platter drives approximately 6 weeks ago to replace four IDE 120 GB drives. I downloaded SATA raid drivers, partitioned the drives and transferred the data. They have worked flawlessly so far. They are noticeably faster than the IDE drives that they replaced. They are nearly silent after the initial spin up and run stable temperatures at 32 degrees Celsius without additional drive coolers or fans. I expected the drives to live up to the old Seagate reputation and they certainly do. I give them a 5 star rating.

I have been running 2 of these drives (purchased elsewhere) in a Sans Digital tower in JBOD configuration since December 2008. I added two more (from Amazon) to the 4 slot tower in January. All the drives arrived in perfect condition and they have been running flawlessly to date (3-16-2009).The Sans Digital tower is storing large and infrequently accessed data files, so the drives are not stressed and run cool in the well ventilated tower.Sept. 2010: I needed more space on a ReadyNAS NV+ that was running 4 Samsung 1TB drives, so I moved 4 of the 1.5TB Seagates to the ReadyNAS. The NAS expension worked and the new configuration is running well. I've seen no failures with this generation of drives. (The 1TB Samsungs have been less reliable; out of 6, 1 is reporting severe SMART errors and made the ReadyNAS nearly unuseable and a second one is accumulating more SMART errors than I like.)

After reading all the reviews I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about buying this drive because of other reviewers' troubles with it. But it appeared that: (1) most of the advertised problems seem to be related to users with RAID or comparable storage configurations; (2) updated firmware is now available. Well I just wanted a replacement for my second hard drive in a simple Windows XP SP3 system so I went ahead with the purchase. My drive had the CC1G firmware. I went to the Seagate site, typed in the serial number, and it said my drive's fine. And that's been true for a few weeks now. Easy setup with the usual partitioning and formatting. The drive's been very quiet and fast. I've been loading the drive up with stuff including videos and everything has played just fine. So if you have simple storage needs in a Win XP system I think that this drive will work fine for you. If you happen to receive a drive with the older firmware, either return it or just flash it with the updated firmware that's available now.

The first time that I ran SMART software, it showed that the drives (I bought 2) both had reallocated sectors and were failing. This was after the 30 day Amazon returns period, but I contacted them anyway, as it is clear that the drives were poorly packaged and were defective upon arrival. They stood by their 30 day policy and told me to contact the manufacturer using the contact information listed in the manual (which doesn't exist). It looks like I will be left with two very expensive door stops - thanks Amazon.

I thought I owe this to the buying public and not last to Seagate.I have ordered two of these drives so far from Newegg because they do not charge tax. (or shippig). Both drives failed in exactly the same way. Made 4 partitions 500 300 300 320, and after installing a clean Windows XP 64 I went on to format the partitions. The third partition comes back 250 empty 50 used (???) and the fourth partition comes back operation failed could not format. On the replacement the exact same thing happened, I believe one cylinder is from a bad batch. The second time I ran some diagnostic utilities, that clearly stated the 50 GB as "bad" and the fourth partition outright I/O error.I asked Newegg, and the answer was that they are getting back quite a lot of these.I am sure that eventually once it works it works, but you may expect to budget some extra time and aggravation energy to install OS repeatedly and then send the damn thing back. Now I am ordering one from Amazon, and will see...Good luck, apparently it is needed for this drive.

I just received this drive, and I'm very happy with it. I wouldn't call it noisy, but there are quieter drives out there, but it's a nice compromise between performance and quiet for a system drive, and the noise isn't obtrusive. The drive runs very quiet as well. Temps are right around 30C in my Antec Fusion Remote Max. The drive is in a separate compartment with the PSU, so only receives a bit a passive cooling from the PSU fan and the air that gets drawn through the vent underneath the drive. My previous drive was a Seagate 7200.9 300GB, and it was significantly louder and ran hotter (about 47-50C in the same location).Overall I'd say this is a great value drive for a mid-level system.

Here is what Drobo says about these drives for their units:The reason why we have disqualified the Seagate 1.5 TB drives is due to the following.- High failure rate- Multiple failures (if customer has more than one in Drobo)- Hangs, freezes, performance (this is all on the forums)This is for you information! The firmware is not ever to be updated by Seagate according to the Seagate website. Barracuda was once a premiere drive, not anymore I guess.

Bought this drive a few weeks back and it's worked flawlessly. Upon opening the Amazon box, I was utterly shocked to find that it was actually packaged carefully! Historically, Amazon has shipped fragile items in a huge box with absolutely no packaging whatsoever, with the item rattling around like a rock. This drive came tightly sandwiched between two thick pieces of foam. Again, this is a first and probably just a fluke.Note that this is an OEM drive, meaning that you JUST GET THE DRIVE. Nothing else. Zippo. No sata cable, no power cable, no manual, no packaging. Nothing.Installation of the drive is incredibly simple; if you can't figure it out, you shouldn't be using a computer in the first place. Once installed and operating, it's extremely quiet. So quiet, in fact, you'd swear it wasn't plugged in. Data access is very fast; noticeably faster than my 7200.9 & 7200.10 250 gig drives. If you need massive amounts of space, I highly recommend this drive.

I need a drive to back up my photos, and that turned into a project of "well, I might as well back up everything..." I had my eyes on a 1tb drive, but at a few dollars more, I bit and purchased this Seagate drive. 1.5TB (well, 1.39TB when formatted in NTFS) for ~$120 is nothing a great price, but this time next year, it'll probably be a lot cheaper.Earlier Seagate drives for this model had firmware issues where the drive would spontaneously freeze. The drive that I purchased and received was free from this with updated firmware (you can check this by going to Seagate's website and looking for SeaTools.) That was my big concern (although instead of dealing with Seagate's awful customer service, you can download the updated firmware for this drive at Newegg.)On another note, Amazon seems to have gotten a lot better about packaging OEM drives. It seemed like they used to just toss it in an empty box and hope that UPS didn't destroy it, but this came in a larger box, all wrapped in foam. That made me feel a lot better.

I brought this drive at 12/6/08 and when I received it, it was just a plain brownbox oem drive with no instructions nor cables. The box looks like it has been previously opened also. It didn't matter to me because I have lots of sata cables anyways and I don't need instructions. I have a Gigabyte 965p-s3 motherboard and the motherboard won't detect the drive when connected to the purple jmicron controller but works with the integrated ICH8 controller. I used acronis and moved the OS over from my old 400gb hard drive to this one and it works fine. One minor quirk is that it makes a clicking noise when this drive boots up. I thought that they would've fixed the firmware issue by the time when ship the drive but I guess they didn't. Mine's came with SD17 firmware and I had to manually update it with SD1A firmware. However, I was using the hard drive with the SD17 firmware for a few days and it seems to be working fine.I would've given it 5 stars if Amazon says that it is an OEM drive so I would know what I am buying. Other than that, the hard drive works great.

Failed after 800 hours of use... One minute it was fine the next it caused a blue screen failure and then all the LBA's were bad. Used every tool avail no luck. Have never had a drive fail so quickly. I'd stay away based on the 7200.11 fiasco! 7200.12 doesn't seem to be a lot better!Update: received new drive from Seagate, swapped circuit board just to see if the failure was electrical or mechanical. Turns out its a mechanical failure which in my mind makes the failure worse!
