I purchased a ST31000528AS 1TB Seagate hard drive and the drive had poor packing inside the box. The drive was just sliding around in the box. Naturally 12 days from receiving the drive from Amazon the drive has to be RMA to Seagate. The drive would lockup in Vista, I would reset the computer and receive no hard drive detected. I had to Power down the computer wait 30 seconds then power back on to get the drive to detect. Ran Seatools diagnostic software from Seagate and the drive failed both Short and Long DST tests. with error code A4E7EA58. I will not purchase another hard drive from Amazon.

I use these drives as they were intended, for large scale storage. I'm not running them as boot drives, I'm not running them in crazy RAID configurations, and I'm not running them in a poorly ventilated enclosure. I have 7 of these drives now and I have had zero issues with them over the last 5+ months. I opperate two in external enclosures that house my lossless music collection. One of these external drives is at work with me and running 8hrs a day 5 days a week for 5 months. No issues and I've done many full 1.2tb writes to this drive to update my music collection. The other drives are used in my home theater pc (Silverstone LC-16) to house my entire DVD collection. Once again, zero issues for several months.TAKE NOTE. All hard drives can fail. No one brand is any better than any other brand for failures, so don't fall for people crying wolf. I've been working with computers for 20+ years and have had 100's of hard drives in that time. I have had dead drives from Western Digital, Seagate, Samsung, Micropolis, Hitachi, Maxtor, IBM, and a few others. With the exception of IBM's Deathstar line of hard drives, I've had the same luck with all of these brands.Every so often, I have a drive die. But I don't hold it against any of the manufacturers just because I know this is just the luck of the draw. In the last 12mos I've had drives from Samsung, Western Digital, and Hitachi die on me. But, that never caused an issue, aside from annoyance, because I backup all my important data. Heck, my music collection is cloned on 3 drives just to be safe!Update April 2010:I now have 8 of these drives and have not had a single one die on me. Some of them get some pretty heavy use as swap drives where I back up my 1.3tb music collection to them and then use that drive to copy over to my various HTPC's throughout the house. I love the speed of these drives and they are reasonably quiet, but not enough to use in the HTPC in my bedroom which is only 5' from my head. In those cases, a slower green drive would work best. So far I have about 15 of these 1.5tb drives, some in my CarPC, external cases, HTPC's, and my main system. The only drives that have died on me were a Seagate LP 5900rpm model (it was in an external case) and 2 Western Digital green drives. As with all hard drives, no one brand is any better than any other. Anyone that says so generally is not a hardware techy with sufficient sample size to make any useful observations. Take it from me, I have over 25tb of storage space and every brand has died on me at least once, hence the need to diligently backup your stuff (just like I do)...

Overall, it seems to be a decent drive. It should be noted that you just get the drive-no cables or set up software. In my case, I bought one to put into a drive enclosure, so this was not a problem.

I purchased three of these drives to expand the internal storage in my heavily upgraded PowerMac video editing system. The drives perform as advertised, but I failed to check the peak current draw at start-up which exceeded the available current in my 1KW power supply. The peak start-up current is about 45% higher on this particular model, all other specs are the same or very close to the other 1TB drives I own. My solution to the problem was to move two of the drives out to an external drive enclosure.Overall, a very good value with good performance.

Update: I wrote this review before a firmware update was made available and my comments reflect the situation at the time. When the updates were made available, I flashed my 5 drives and they've been working fine ever since. I'd change the rating to a 4 star if the editor allowed.I and many others have been experiencing serious problems with these drives including:* dropping out of RAID configurations for no apparent reason* being ejected from a RAID configuration due to read / write errors* freezing for up to 30 secondsThese problems have been reported on Linux, Vista, XP, and OS X and appear to be related to how the drives flush their write cache. In many cases, the drives work fine for days or weeks before problems appear. In my case, I bought five of these for my Qnap TS-509 Pro and they worked great for about two weeks under various read / write loads. Since then, I've had all three of the problems mentioned above on different drives and they are growing progressively worse. The latest problem was three of the five drives disappearing from the RAID5 volume while I was attempting to copy the files to a different NAS.A work-around that has been successful for some is to disable the disk write cache. Other than the obvious performance penalty and reduced lifespan this causes, some systems do not provide a means of disabling disk write cache (such as the Qnap).References to these problems can be found on many forum threads:Qnap: http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=142&t=8826Netgear: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=20435&start=60&st=0&sk=t&sd=aSynology: http://www.synology.com/enu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&p=47101AVSForum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1080005macrumors: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=571843Ubuntu: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=933053Slashdot: http://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1003109&cid=25458241Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B00066IJPQ/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?_encoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1The most informative thread may be found on Seagate's own support forum, where it appears Seagate is blaming everyone but themselves for the problem:http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=ata_drives&thread.id=2390&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

What's to know? Seagate is a great brand. The product is a lot of fast storage that's relatively affordable per Gig of space. It's huge!It does arrive unformatted, so set aside a day just to let the formatting complete. Also, I used the Seagate Drive Wizard (download from their website) to clone my 400 GB HD to this 1.5TB drive and before swapping them. Worked perfectly after SeaGate tech support showed me how to get the software to recognize the external USB docking station (Thermaltake BlacX (another fine prodduct)) for the clone. The drive is fast, quite, reliable and huge. Everything a Hard Drive should be.

Just read all the other 1 star reviews here and on other sites (rhymes with "egg"). As everybody has written, there is a serious problem with these drives. Besides the DOE and early failures the most reported problem is the freezing. I bought 3 of these for my HTPC and whenever I play anything (VIDEO_TS, mkv, avi, divx...) I consistently get after 3-5 minutes freezing for about 1-2 minutes. It is very annoying in a HTPC but in a RAID this spells disaster. The worst part of this is that Seagate is doing the "head in the sand" tech support. This reminds me of the Intel P4 math error when Intel initially stated that it wasn't a problem, then that it was not a big deal and then finally replaced all those faulty CPU's.Apparently nobody at Seagate has the guts and brains to come forward and call a spade a spade.Nobody should buy any more Seagate drives until they post a fix on the main product page or the main tech support page. I went to the Seagate forums and there are many messages of people calling and emailing and just being ignored for weeks. There are even firmware updates on bittorrent (WTF?). What kind of company deserts their customers to the point that they have to search on torrents for a solution???I just hope that a big Class-Action law firm will loose their data with these drives and take them to the cleaners. Any company that has this much disdain for their customers should be severely punished. At least the CTO and the responsible persons for tech support and customer service should be fired.Maybe an internet-wide Seagate boycott will wake them up!

I purchased 2 of them months ago and they are great! The firmware issue only affects and old batch, so right now (Aug 2009) its safe to buy (even when I buy them months ago it was safe :P )I have one of them on a backup-NAS and other one on my PCH Media player, right now I'm planing on buying a 3rd one (unless something bigger from Seagate shows up).The only negative I can think of is the heat, (they are hotter than the 750GB Samsungs I have) so be sure to have some kind of ventilation for them, and don't place them on a non-ventilated enclosure.BTW, they are really fast drives, you can verify it online on major review sites, in fact I was really tempted to replace my PC's 750GB Samsungs with them, but I really needed the extra storage on the NAS and PCH.

I purchased this drive on Amazon and used it in an HP MediaSmart EX470 Windows Home Server to increase storage. While playing video from the server the video stream would start to stutter and freeze. I spent 2 months troubleshooting through a strict process of elimination, ruling out the Client PCs, the managed gigabit switch, the HP Server, its software and hardware. When I read of all the problems with the 1.5tb drive I tried removing it from the server,of course everything worked flawlessly with the drive gone, returning the drive to the server the problem continued. Searching the links that the previous review had posted I found many others experiencing this problem. I tried many fo the suggestions such as disabling write cache, I updated the firmware to Brinks-4D8H-SD1B from Seagate's website unfortunately the problem has not been resolved.I chose the 1.5tb drive as the HP sever only has 4 drive bays and I wanted to maximize storage density. Little did I know I would lose nearly 100hrs of my life chasing this problem down. I don't know if Amazon will accept a return, I certainly don't want a replacement drive from Seagate. I also purchased a 1tb Western Digital Caviar Black that has performed well. My next purchase will certainly not be from Seagate.

I had a fair amount of problems installing this drive. It was recognized, but would not format. I must have tried a dozen times and then started searching for a solution. After hours of searching and going down many false trails, I found an article (not on the Seagate site) that mentioned the individual needed to update the NVIDA drivers. Although I keep fairly current, I must have only been updating the video card drivers. I found a complete update on the NVIDA site (after some time) and once I made the update, the drive was able to be formatted. The drive is working fine, but due to the lack of information on the problem, I cannot give it more than 3 stars due to all the problems I had.

Bought this drive a few weeks back and it's worked flawlessly. Upon opening the Amazon box, I was utterly shocked to find that it was actually packaged carefully! Historically, Amazon has shipped fragile items in a huge box with absolutely no packaging whatsoever, with the item rattling around like a rock. This drive came tightly sandwiched between two thick pieces of foam. Again, this is a first and probably just a fluke.Note that this is an OEM drive, meaning that you JUST GET THE DRIVE. Nothing else. Zippo. No sata cable, no power cable, no manual, no packaging. Nothing.Installation of the drive is incredibly simple; if you can't figure it out, you shouldn't be using a computer in the first place. Once installed and operating, it's extremely quiet. So quiet, in fact, you'd swear it wasn't plugged in. Data access is very fast; noticeably faster than my 7200.9 & 7200.10 250 gig drives. If you need massive amounts of space, I highly recommend this drive.

I have measured read and write speeds of well over 100 MB/sec on the outer tracks of this drive. This is the fastest drive I have ever seen, and I have 10000 RPM SCSI drives. The price is right, too. This is an ideal drive for RAID. It is low profile and low power so you can cram them into your case without worry of overheating.

I installed them in on Intel's mini ITX Atom based board that has two SATA ports but does not support RAID. I decided to try Fedora Core 10's software RAID 1 configuration and is my NAS. It has been online since Feb 3, 2009 and the hard drives are working perfectly so far.UPDATE: Today, it's Jan 18, 2011. Both drives are still functioning. I have this drive and it works great. A couple of people are saying that this drive is slow or pauses when transferring files or playing media. They need to check to make sure that there are no jumpers set. This drive normally operates at 300 MB/sec. See below from Seagate's page:"It is not necessary to set any terminators or other settings on this drive for proper operation. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 150MB/sec drives is for factory use only. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 300MB/sec drives can be used to force the drive into SATA 150MB/sec mode for use with older SATA controllers that only work with SATA 150MB/sec drives."The jumper setting can be seen here [...]If your system is sata 1 then you will need this jumper set. If your system is sata 1 and the jumper is not set that could be causing the pause problem since the drive is trying to send the data faster than the system can accept it. If you system is sata 2 and the jumper is set then this could cause slow read/writes.

Well, I am using 2 of these drives in RAID mirror for my My Documents folder (yes you can assign the My Documents folder to specific hard drives, just rt click and go into the properties). This way anything in My Documents is 'backed up' due to redundancy. The drives just work. They are speedy enough, and there is an extravagent amount of storage. I also have 2 250 GB drives in RAID stripping mode for speed, and that gives me just under 1/2 TB on my C drive and 1.5 Tb of storage, total almost 2 TB storage. That is a LOT of space. Fully recommended.
