After reading all the reviews I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about buying this drive because of other reviewers' troubles with it. But it appeared that: (1) most of the advertised problems seem to be related to users with RAID or comparable storage configurations; (2) updated firmware is now available. Well I just wanted a replacement for my second hard drive in a simple Windows XP SP3 system so I went ahead with the purchase. My drive had the CC1G firmware. I went to the Seagate site, typed in the serial number, and it said my drive's fine. And that's been true for a few weeks now. Easy setup with the usual partitioning and formatting. The drive's been very quiet and fast. I've been loading the drive up with stuff including videos and everything has played just fine. So if you have simple storage needs in a Win XP system I think that this drive will work fine for you. If you happen to receive a drive with the older firmware, either return it or just flash it with the updated firmware that's available now.

I thought I owe this to the buying public and not last to Seagate.I have ordered two of these drives so far from Newegg because they do not charge tax. (or shippig). Both drives failed in exactly the same way. Made 4 partitions 500 300 300 320, and after installing a clean Windows XP 64 I went on to format the partitions. The third partition comes back 250 empty 50 used (???) and the fourth partition comes back operation failed could not format. On the replacement the exact same thing happened, I believe one cylinder is from a bad batch. The second time I ran some diagnostic utilities, that clearly stated the 50 GB as "bad" and the fourth partition outright I/O error.I asked Newegg, and the answer was that they are getting back quite a lot of these.I am sure that eventually once it works it works, but you may expect to budget some extra time and aggravation energy to install OS repeatedly and then send the damn thing back. Now I am ordering one from Amazon, and will see...Good luck, apparently it is needed for this drive.

I just received this drive, and I'm very happy with it. I wouldn't call it noisy, but there are quieter drives out there, but it's a nice compromise between performance and quiet for a system drive, and the noise isn't obtrusive. The drive runs very quiet as well. Temps are right around 30C in my Antec Fusion Remote Max. The drive is in a separate compartment with the PSU, so only receives a bit a passive cooling from the PSU fan and the air that gets drawn through the vent underneath the drive. My previous drive was a Seagate 7200.9 300GB, and it was significantly louder and ran hotter (about 47-50C in the same location).Overall I'd say this is a great value drive for a mid-level system.

Here is what Drobo says about these drives for their units:The reason why we have disqualified the Seagate 1.5 TB drives is due to the following.- High failure rate- Multiple failures (if customer has more than one in Drobo)- Hangs, freezes, performance (this is all on the forums)This is for you information! The firmware is not ever to be updated by Seagate according to the Seagate website. Barracuda was once a premiere drive, not anymore I guess.

I run 24 Web sites in addition to being the author of several books.Land of Childhood's Fears - Faith, Friendship, and The Vietnam War, The Lie Detection Manual,A Synthesis of the Russian Brainwashing Manual on Psychopolitics,EntertainingAngels-Color,Romance In The War Zone - from Land of Childhood's Fears,A Book Of Sermons-Vol1, aqmong others. With all the revisions, edits, artwork, and photos, I need LOTS of reliable storage space, and this drive fits the bill perfectly. It is quiet, fast, and reliable. I am "banging away" on this drive CONTINUOUSLY, and it performs flawlessly.

Bought this drive a few weeks back and it's worked flawlessly. Upon opening the Amazon box, I was utterly shocked to find that it was actually packaged carefully! Historically, Amazon has shipped fragile items in a huge box with absolutely no packaging whatsoever, with the item rattling around like a rock. This drive came tightly sandwiched between two thick pieces of foam. Again, this is a first and probably just a fluke.Note that this is an OEM drive, meaning that you JUST GET THE DRIVE. Nothing else. Zippo. No sata cable, no power cable, no manual, no packaging. Nothing.Installation of the drive is incredibly simple; if you can't figure it out, you shouldn't be using a computer in the first place. Once installed and operating, it's extremely quiet. So quiet, in fact, you'd swear it wasn't plugged in. Data access is very fast; noticeably faster than my 7200.9 & 7200.10 250 gig drives. If you need massive amounts of space, I highly recommend this drive.

I brought this drive at 12/6/08 and when I received it, it was just a plain brownbox oem drive with no instructions nor cables. The box looks like it has been previously opened also. It didn't matter to me because I have lots of sata cables anyways and I don't need instructions. I have a Gigabyte 965p-s3 motherboard and the motherboard won't detect the drive when connected to the purple jmicron controller but works with the integrated ICH8 controller. I used acronis and moved the OS over from my old 400gb hard drive to this one and it works fine. One minor quirk is that it makes a clicking noise when this drive boots up. I thought that they would've fixed the firmware issue by the time when ship the drive but I guess they didn't. Mine's came with SD17 firmware and I had to manually update it with SD1A firmware. However, I was using the hard drive with the SD17 firmware for a few days and it seems to be working fine.I would've given it 5 stars if Amazon says that it is an OEM drive so I would know what I am buying. Other than that, the hard drive works great.

Failed after 800 hours of use... One minute it was fine the next it caused a blue screen failure and then all the LBA's were bad. Used every tool avail no luck. Have never had a drive fail so quickly. I'd stay away based on the 7200.11 fiasco! 7200.12 doesn't seem to be a lot better!Update: received new drive from Seagate, swapped circuit board just to see if the failure was electrical or mechanical. Turns out its a mechanical failure which in my mind makes the failure worse!

What else can I say. This drive showed up DOA. You can't give it ANY stars then. I was really hoping to give this drive a perfect 5star rating. NEVER have I had this experience with any drive manufacturer, Come on Seagate this is your flagship.I spent the good part of a day messing with drivers and firmware updates. Neither of my computers could see this drive under any circumstance possible. Both the MB manufacturer and Seagate believe the drive is dead. Whose fault, Seagate, Amazon, UPS... who knows. The product was packaged VERY well and I left the drive warm up for 12 hours before I started messing with it.This drive was purchased to explore the possiblity of creating a pretty sizable array to hold over 1000 DVD's for a HTPC. Hopefully the technology isn't too new that it is so unpredictable.Pros: HUGE capacityCons: DOA... DOA... DEAD ON ARRIVAL!!!I will write a follow up review on the replacement drive Amazon is shipping.

Not sure what the other two reviewers were having problems with. Maybe something running in the background or not enough free resources on their systems.I am able to push 1080p HD video with no stutter no stopping or starting no problems.I have this drive in an external enclosure using Firewire 400 and Firewire 800.Both move 1080p video with no problem.Moving files or data it is obviously faster with the Firewire 800 cable rather than the Firewire 400.I dont think this drive even breaks a sweat playing an mp3.With 32 mb of cache it has no problems what so ever.Buy it you wont be disappointed. We are also testing this drive as a media drive holding approximately 500 movies that have been ripped to it. Some in 1080p HD others in 720p and some in standard def. The test drive is able to stream over a network to 5 different apple tv's and 1 other HD Media Player. The drive is in an external enclosure that has a gigabit network connection and works flawlessly. In our testing while playing all 5 apple tv's and the other hd player all 6 users reported absolutely no stuttering or cacheing of the file or data. Its that fast.So again not sure why the other reviewers had problems with this drive stopping and starting or stuttering or re cacheing.

I have measured read and write speeds of well over 100 MB/sec on the outer tracks of this drive. This is the fastest drive I have ever seen, and I have 10000 RPM SCSI drives. The price is right, too. This is an ideal drive for RAID. It is low profile and low power so you can cram them into your case without worry of overheating.

"Performing a firmware update can be risky by itself even in the best of situations" -seagate support website.http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=206091The new drives (as of Feb 2009) STILL have problems (read/write errors). Meanwhile I've been waiting for a week for response from Seagate. I tried calling, and their technical/warranty lines are DOWN, except for the automated service that shuffles you from option to option. I'm returning the unit. Also be aware that Seagate does not offer the firmware from the website. You have to get it from their tech support people on an individual basis (who are not available). They say that it is because "Performing a firmware update can be risky by itself even in the best of situations."

I bought one of these a few months ago. I use it for digital photography files ranging in size from 15MB RAW files to 1.5GB layered Photoshop files. This 1.5TB drive does a great job of moving these files around at sustained throughput speed of about 90-100MB/sec.BUT, after only a month or two, the drive started making the "sound of death" clicking noise, and locking up my whole computer. So I sent it back to Seagate for a replacement, and ordered another one from Amazon.Right now, I am only using these drives for redundant backup, and based on reviews that I have read, the rate of failure on these things is pretty high.Bottom line: these drives are probably good only for high-speed large redundant storage situations, where you can afford to lose a drive without negative consequences. For a primary, large, high-speed drive that is reliable, I recommend the 1TB WD "black".

I was looking to expand some of my 1TB drives and this one was a perfect replacement. Speed is about the same or a little faster (transfer Mb/sec) and seek times are about the same.I read other reviews saying those drives tend to go bad but so far this one has been working fine. No unexpected temperature issues, etc.I run a bunch of drives in a RAID5 array so I'm not overly worried if one crashes.Given the price - I'd say it's a great buy!

It was working for a month, then it started having hardware errors.1. Linux would re-mount it as read only after hardware error.2. After the reboot it may or may not work at all.3. After a reboot some directories were completely lost.4. The drive would mount fine but stop working after a minute or two.Do not waste your time on this junk. It is far worse than throwing your money away. The only reason to spend money on this hard drive is to pay someone to remove it from your computer.

I have this drive and it works great. A couple of people are saying that this drive is slow or pauses when transferring files or playing media. They need to check to make sure that there are no jumpers set. This drive normally operates at 300 MB/sec. See below from Seagate's page:"It is not necessary to set any terminators or other settings on this drive for proper operation. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 150MB/sec drives is for factory use only. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 300MB/sec drives can be used to force the drive into SATA 150MB/sec mode for use with older SATA controllers that only work with SATA 150MB/sec drives."The jumper setting can be seen here [...]If your system is sata 1 then you will need this jumper set. If your system is sata 1 and the jumper is not set that could be causing the pause problem since the drive is trying to send the data faster than the system can accept it. If you system is sata 2 and the jumper is set then this could cause slow read/writes.
