I purchased a computer in December 2008 that contained a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 HD. The HD worked terrifically and I had no complaints about it for the first 9 months that I owned it (much longer than most people have owned one before leaving a 4 or 5 star review!!!) but the HD just now failed (August 2009). The disk does not spin and the computer does not recognize that a hard drive even exists, not even attempting to access it. The data is not recoverable by the usual data recovery processes, meaning recovery must be done in a lint-free environment at a cost of $2,500 or more. Based on the research I have done since the hard drive failed, it is apparent that the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 HDs are failing at an alarming rate (reportedly estimated upwards of around 30-40% by some data recovery experts.) While Seagate denies that the 7200.11 HDs are defective, those issuing RMAs are apparently being instructed to have the failed 7200.11 HDs sent to Seagate for replacement with the 7200.12 HDs, rather than having the 7200.11 HDs repaired. This appears to me, and many others with failed 7200.11 HDs, a silent acknowledgement by Seagate that the 7200.11 drives are defective and non-repairable. Do not believe that this issue is resolved, or can be resolved, as Seagate doesn't even appear to believe that. If you are considering buying a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 HD, don't. If you already have one, back up all of your files immediately and replace your hard drive with something else! I wouldn't have even given 1 star if that were possible.

After purchasing this drive to use in an external case for backing up my computer, i had reoccurring problems with the drive. i tried different cases, different operating systems and even installing the drive in a desktop computer. no luck. after contacting seagate and explaining to them the issues with the drive, they refused to give me a firmware update which seems to be the fix for the problem according to pages and pages of forum reviews. they said since i used it in an external case it voided the warranty. after reviewing the warranty, this is untrue.now i am out of money. i did purchase toshiba drives for my ps3, laptop and desktop as well as the external case i originally used for this seagate drive. all are working wonderfully. **BUYER BEWARE** seagate has really fallen off as far as reliable products go. i would insult their customer service but if you have ever had the torture of using their website and bureaucracy, you already know contacting seagate is like pulling your own teeth in front of a live studio audience.

I had very bad experience with Seagate so far.The story starts with a 500GB internal HD I bought. This one dropped dead after less than a year. Since Best Buy told me I must contact Seagate and I didn't feel like going through all their support process I just bought a new Seagate 1TBHD (not a smart move of course#. This HD started giving me the clicking sound after 1 month. Additionally it started not being accessible once in a while meaning this baby was about to die on me.This time I contacted Seagate support. We went together through running their diagnostic SW and the decision of the support person was to RMA the product. After going through the RMA process on Seagate site I printed the shipping address they provided and shipped the product right away. Guess what. Address they gave me was wrong. After the box returned with a note that this address is not valid I logged into the Seagate site, put in my RMA number. Guess what. They now say this RMA number doesn't exist #and I have this number printed and in an e-mail from Seagate).Finding this experience unbelievable I can only recommend to stay away from this company. Their products fail and they don't support you once this happens. This at least is my experience with them.Product link: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1 TB SATA 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST31000333AS

I purchased three 500GB versions of these back at the beginning of 2009 for a system build where I used two in a RAID configuration and the third drive as a back up. Just 8 months later all three drives are failing: each has a SMART problem (detected by Windows and by Seagate SeaTools) and two of the three also fail SeaTools short drive tests. I use these drives in an extremely well ventilated Antec P182 case that has a separate hard drive bay that keeps them isolated from the heat produced by the motherboard and graphics card, so heat is NOT the reason these drives are failing. I believe the real issue is with poor quality components. I use a fair number of other Seagate drives and have had no problems with them. I bought literally about a dozen 2.5" 7200rpm drives for upgrading various notebooks (Mac and PC) without any issues--for a while I was replacing all my friend's drives after I sped my macbook 13 drive up from 4200RPM to 7200RPM and was showing everyone the performance improvements... In any case the problems I've had with these drives seem to be an issue limited to this particular version. The only positive thing I can say is that at least I learned these drives were going bad before they completely died. I was able to back up all my data to my NES array. I've filled out RMAs through the Seagate webpage and will hopefully get replacement drives soon, but I don't know that I'll actually trust them considering my 100% fail rate with the three I already own. I may decide to replace them with WD drives instead.

I have this exact unit.It worked fine for about 6 months, then suddenly stopped being recognized by Windows 7.Internet research led to possible solution of updating firmware. BIOS now tells me "hardware failure imminent" (versus nothing at all before) and to back up my data, but will not allow Windows to boot off the "good" master HDD while the "bad" one is attached. Can't read disk in another machine using Linux either.Ten years of family photos and my projects are up in smoke.I have a (heavily advertised) on-line back-up service currently restoring my files to a brand new drive. This has been a disappointment too. At the rate the service is restoring my files, it will take about 6 weeks (by my calculations) to rescue my 450gigs of priceless data.Buyer beware with this drive. (Google and you will see thousands of messages about this same problem.)P.S. On-line back-up is not as good as I'd hoped either.

Today my computer suddenly stopped working. I'm using this Seagate 1TB drive as a secondary HDD (primary drive is much smaller) and I use it to store my music, movies, etc. Thank goodness I also back up everything to a THIRD external drive, because as it turns out the only way to get my computer to start working again was to unplug this internal Seagate drive. I checked and ironically I ordered this drive a year ago to the day. So yeah...the drive was fine while it was working, but one year later and it seems to be busted. Not planning on buying another Seagate any time soon.

I no longer recommend this drive since the 7200.12 series came out and one of my drives died. I would like to change my rating to three stars. The drive I bought from PEAK ZONE was shipped without a antistatic bag and it died, do not buy from them.this is a oem, meaning just a drive in a antistatic bag, no screws, cables or literature or box.this drive needs a firmware update, I had troubles with one of my drives, after updating with new firmware which applies to all 7200.11 drives they work much better and quiter. You must remove a jumper to enable sata 300 mbps transfers, it was very hard to remove because the edge is below the socket. I use a small screwdriver and the jumper went flying somewhere into the room. I have to admit when I first bought my Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM Item #: N82E16822148288 (From Newegg not Amazon. However I do buy alot from Amazon as well)<<-- Item now deactivated at NewEgg.I came very close to sending it back because I heard a noise at first and was very concerned. Out of panic I called Newegg but didn't really want to send it back but I knew that Seagate had one of the best return policies and a long one at that so I decided to keep it and see what happened. Glad I did I bought mine on 7/16/2008. There were instruction on the newegg site that said to move a clip or something on the harddrive and I did this. Anyways the noise has gone away along time ago. I was told to leave the computer on for long periods of time which I did. I only recently started turning my computer off at night. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I am so so glad I stuck with Seagate. And to think I almost panicked and send my seatgate back. I bought a Eathwatts power supply also and let me tell you my electric bill is so low that I'm amazed and this was running my computer 24 hours aday.(( just wanted to add that it is possible that the white platic thing was in the wrong place on the one I bought because mine was alot cheaper and that might have been why I had to move it unsure)) Anyways I bought another one today .

I have bought one of these and from all the reading of the reviews from many sites I am very skeptical, but have been a Seagate fan from the very start. I talked to Seagate customer support about the issue before I even used the drive to see what they had to say about it. They did tell me one thing that nobody had reported as an important step in the firmware update process. (I don't even think it was on Seagate's website instructions). The site does say you have to do a full shutdown of the computer, not a soft restart but a full OFF. But the tech told me the drives fully take in and close the firmware update when the drive losses all power. That means you either need to pull the power off the drive or unplug your computer and then press your case power button to get rid off all of the system power. I am sure many people didn't make sure this crucial step in no power to the drive after firmware update was taken correctly. My computer takes 20 seconds to loose all power even when I unplug it. The drives will say the firmware was installed but may not have been correctly taken in by the board if all was not totally cut off from the drives. I hope mine is not one to suffer the fate of others and I hope this helps others in realizing you need to follow the procedure to the T. Unfortunately even a users system can prevent them from doing this update correctly unknowingly.Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB SATA 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST3500320AS

Seagate is knowingly selling a faulty hard drive that just up and decides to not be seen by the computer one day. You will lose everything on it. No it does not stop working, you can hear it spinning and there is no warning to this happening. When you contact them they try to charge you $400 or more to retrieve your data for you.

I dunno what the negative reviews are for... small print indicates they are NOT about the ST31000333AS, but another drive. I bought my ST31000333AS over a year ago, use it in an external Vantec case with firewire connection. Blazing speed, never a problem. Note that if you buy the drive alone you don't get rails, disc, anything but the drive itself. If you want a kit with all the cables, etc, then go for that and pay more. I was using Western Digital HD's for years, finally gave up after the n-th one died. Been using the Seagate Barracuda line exclusively for several years now, 300GB, 400GB, 1TB. No complaints. They run so quiet you don't know they're there. Highly recommended.

UPDATE: A newer generation of this drive, the 7200.12, Bulk/OEM version, has been available for a while now and has better performance in terms of speed and power consumption. So that's likely a better option.ORIGINAL REVIEW:As of now, this is the state of the art Seagate 1TB drive. It uses just three drive platters (the thing that looks like a compact disc in the photo - there's actually a stack of those inside your hard drive!). Older 1TB drives used 4 or even 5 platters.Less platters means greater data density, which means faster data transfer speeds. Less platters also means cooler operating temperatures, usually. The 7200.11 line of drives uses 333GB platters. The new 7200.12 drives with 500GB platters is starting to be released - a one platter, 500GB drive is available now. A two platter 1TB drive should be out sometime in the next month or two.By the way, a few notes about OEM / bulk drives:- OEM or bulk means it comes in plain packaging, with no software, screws or cables. If you're replacing a drive, that may not be a problem. But if it's a new installation, you'll need a SATA data cable and (often) a power adapter.- As of 1/3/2009, Seagate has reduced the warranty on their OEM hard drives from 5 years to 3 years. Not a big deal to me, as after 3 years I'm not going to pay to return the drive and put the 3+-year-old model refurbished drive I get back in my machine anyway. The real issue is, what's the reliability of the drive, so you don't need the warranty? It's very hard to get a good answer on that. Many people would say buy a Seagate, Western Digital, or Hitachi drive, and after that, it's a roll of the dice. Certainly making sure your fans are working and you clean out the dust bunnies helps!

I have used both Western Digital Green 1TB and Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB in DLINK 323 NAS device for about a month. These are my experiences... Seagate didn't need firmware update.Packaging:WD was packaged very well with cushion padding where as Seagate was packed really lousy. I had ordered 2 drives in each brand and one of the seagate boxes looked like it was opened already (may be it was human error while packaging; I didn't bother).Noise:Seagate is noisier than WD but it is much smoother than WD. Meaning, WD produced lot of hard clicking sounds that really irritated me (both drives; may be just the two I received were defective). Clicking sounds from Seagate felt normal to me (and it was muffled).Heat:Seagate got much hotter than WD. I figured WD didn't produce as much as heat because it uses "intelliseek" that runs the motor at optimal/slower speeds rather than the advertised 7200rpm.Speed:I couldn't compare speed as I was running WD in RAID1 and Seagate as Standard drives.Overall, I am very happy with Seagate mainly because of its much smoother operation and brand reputation.Hope this review helps!

My st3500320as bricked itself today after 6 months. Seems like the firmware problem. It would be useful if seagate would proactively notify users about such danerous bugs in the firmware. Also, if the drive is an OEM drive Seagate will not repair it nondestructively, even if the problem is due to the faulty firmware. If you buy a seagate it may be prudent to wait a few months to make sure that model is stable, since so many of their newer drives seems to be having firmeware and related issues.

I have been using Seagates now for awhile, and pretty much have been buying only Seagates for the couple of years.Usually they are rock solid, no failures or drops outs, and I have 2 of these. One went bad, and it was one that did not have the firmware update when I looked at the Seagate site and checked the serial numbers. The other one has been fine. It is a pain to update the firmware, but once done it works. The drives are otherwise quiet and run fairly cool. The ones that work deserve 5 stars and the firmware issue is pretty poor. (I use these to back up my computer and rotate them, so nothing lost fortunately.) The firmware should be fine on the newer ones, but keep it in mind.

When you get this drive just go to seagate.com and pop in the serial number and it will tell you if your drive needs the firmware update or not. I received mine and was told by the seagate site I did not need it. So I installed, loaded OS, powered down a couple of times to test and everything works fine. Pretty fast write speeds as well. Btw I have purchased personally and for work Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital and Hitachi/IBM drives and all have at one point or another have failed. Yes the seagate issue is a special case just like the IBM "Deathstars" years ago. But to say one company makes drives that fail more than others is just bullcaca.

I really read about this model, about its good performance and capacity, but also read about lots of DOAs, or deaths of drives in 1 or 2 monhts. I gave it a try and bought 2 of these for making a 1TB RAID0 array. But it wasn't the best bet, the array failed in 2 weeks, but because I used linux, even that the array was failed I could still read it (using sata_sil driver suse11). I hurried to buy a WD drive, and backed up all my data to this hard drive. The array failed because the drive started to present errors (SMART), so I don't trust this drives anymore, now I have them in a RAID1 array just to be sure. This was a big dissapointment, these days Seagate has bad quality SATA drives. Think before you buy them. low reliability.

As a comparison, I have a 750GB WD MyBook FW800 drive that I had been using as my backup drive. I copied a 17GB file from the main computer to both drives (at different times) and it took over 6 TIMES as long to transfer the files to the old drive (which is less than 1/2 full) compared to these drives.Non-performance stuff: this drive is quiet. Also, both of my drives checked out to be unaffected by the drive issue according to the Seagate website.

I bought two of these. When I first got them I noticed jumpers on them and found that all they do is limit the drive to 1.5 GB transfer. I used a safety pin to remove the jumpers (they are tiny) to get the 300 GB transfer. Then I went to Seagate's site and read that a small number of these drives have firmware problems and an update is available (also they have a way to get data off drives that have already broken). I updated the firmware in my drives and have not had any problems with them, they are fast, especially in the RAID 0 stripe I put them in, and work great. So if you get one with a jumper in it, take it out, and go to Seagate's site so you can update the firmware, and you should be good to go.

If you haven't read about this drive's issues elsewhere, let me enlighten you. It seems that on some drives manufactured last year, the firmware has a big bug: it will lock up on boot-up and not be seen by the computer. Your data isn't gone, but you won't be able to access it. There is supposed to be a somewhat simple fix for this- if you're kinda techie skilled (I haven't tried yet for my bricked drive)..So, if you buy this thing, IMMEDIATELY after receiving, determine if its one that needs an upgrade to its firmware. Seagate has a page devoted to this on their website..Otherwise, it was a sweet drive- plenty quick and quiet. I just wish they had done a better job of advertising that there was a problem.

I bought this about six months ago when the price was much higher, but I still feel like I got an exceptional deal. This had NCQ (native command queuing) that most drives do not. That means when files are highly fragmented, the disk drive itself intelligently reads the files according to where they are positioned on the disk and then puts it back together before sending data to the computer. The result is a faster disk than one that doesn't have this feature. I had zero problems with this disk, unlike one of the 1.5 TB drives. I had to send that one back for exchange and got one back that vibrates slightly. So, I plan to purchase another 1 TB disk with NCQ to complement the one I have. I may make it into a RAID configuration.

I'm running this disc as a separate HDD, and not a RAID disc. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with this drive.

I was weary about getting this drive since I heard all the problems of loosing data and these drives going bad after a short time. Don't believe the hype!! I went ahead and bought it and installed it. I went to the seagate knowledge base site, downloaded the firmware and followed the instructions on the site. I updated the firmware and the drive has been running smooth and FAST!!I love the space for the OS and all the apps I have loaded. The price is so good too that, I think I am going to buy another one so I can dump all my pics and music on to it separately. Or, maybe two so I can run a RAID setup. Anyways, don't let the firmware problem scare you, this is a very good drive.

Perhaps Amazon has done some retraining of their warehouse crew since the earlier complaints were posted? My 1TB OEM Seagate Barracuda was packaged very securely inside of foam padding similar to what is found in the packaging for retail Seagate drives. This box was then placed inside of a second box for shipping. It only took 4 business days to arrive via USPS! Thumbs up to Amazon for their care in packaging of this drive for shipment.

Easily installed: one data cable, one power connection.Formatting/config:reasonably easy, a function of your OS (I use Ubuntu Linux).Worked fine for three months (long enough to be out of shippers warranty), then died on powerup (a known, presumably fixed, problem).Seagate returns policy:seems reasonable (I think it's best to buy their Advance Replacement, to get all the required packing materials). However...My issue is: they recommend you delete all the personal data on the drive before sending it in (you don't get the original back, they send it overseas for refurb and they can't protect the data). If I was able to access the drive well enough to delete all data on it, I wouldn't be sending it back.

I have not had it in the machine for very long, only a month so I can't attest to it's long term reliability. So far in use it's a tad faster than the 500 gig seagates and WD's that it replaced. Before I formatted or used the drive I did check the firmware version and it seems amazon is shipping the latest drives so thats a good thing. So it's a decent speed 1 tb drive at a decent price so no complaintsgiving it a 4 as some of the previous 1tb drives gave me problems and I'm still a bit jaded.

Very good and solid drive. Very quiet and fast. Only think I wish they had done is to print the jumper setting on the drive. I have a older motherborad only support SATA I so have to put a jumper on the drive. But the jumper setting is not on the drive and have to log into seagate.com to find out. Jumper is not included also. Other than that, I am happy with the purchase.

This is a great drive for bulk storage. However, when I tried using it as temp/scratch space during video editing, I experienced hickups during playback that didn't occur using my main drive - strange because this drive actually has double the cache of my main drive (which is older and only has 16MB cache.)Except for that peculiar behavior, it's a very economical drive.

Do not buy one of these drives! This drive is a ticking time bomb waiting to go off and destroy your data.I bought one in Aug 08 and it has failed. Users everywhere are complaining that these drives fail at a VERY high rate. Segate knows about the issue but has not acknowledged the problem. I had to wait hour on phone hold to get to support only to be given the run around 3 times with support people pretending like there is no issue.Seagate has not be forthcomming about the massive failure with these drives. Segate needs to let people know which drives have this problem and do right by the people they sold one to. I am VERY disapointed.I will not buy another segate drive EVER because of the poor support and unforthcomming response by Seagate.

Even though there were warnings about problems with the firmware on these hard drives I needed a new hard drive in the worst way. I have preferred Seagate hard drives for at least ten years now, after many problems with Maxtor and Western Digital. I wasn't disappointed. This Seagate hard drive works flawlessly, and I didn't even need to use the firmware I downloaded a month ago. When you are relying on a computer to make your living there is nothing that matters more than having quality components. My old Seagate hard drives are still in service being used by people who can't afford to buy computers.

Died in less than 4 months. I brought this from Amazon.com. Now I have contacted Seagate for warranty purpose. They said I need to ship the item at my expense and wait for 2-4 weeks for replacement (Probably another rectified/refurbished brick). Not worthy, total waste of time and money!Another Chinese garbage.

Unpack it, plug it into the drive bay, turn on, format it and it works flawlessly. This is the second barracuda i've dropped into my macpro and both are working out just great.
