You can never have enough hard drive storage. Especially if you manage digital photos, video and music files.This is the third Seagate External Drive I've purchased. I own two of this model (ST3400601CB-RK), plus a 200GB version. I use firewire (slightly faster than USB 2.0) with an iBook G4.=REVIEW=Pros:- 16 MB cache- Two firewire ports so you can daisy chain multiple drives.- Generally quiet.- They are well ventilated and don't seem to overheat.- Good quality/dependable.Cons:- Stackability. I originally bought them thinking I'd stack them. Problem is, when you lay them flat and stack, the stiffness of the firewire cable tends to shift the drives askew. I use a thick rubber band to keep them nested in place.==STRATEGY==Remember to come up with a good backup strategy:- Backup on a frequent basis (once a week).- Make multiple backups in case one becomes corrupt.- Store a copy off site (i.e. parents house, office, safe depost box) in case of physical disaster. You could get two drives of same size, backup all data identically to both of them. Then keep one off site. Just trade them on some regular basis so both are relatively up to date.==PERFORMACE TIPS==- When looking for a Seagate model, note that there seem to be 8MB cache and 16MB cache of each model. Get the 16MB. Price difference is minimal.- If you are backing up more than one computer, consider partitioning the hard drive to keep each computer's data separate.- Get two smaller drives rather than one big one so you can safely store a backup offsite.There are lots of great articles online about preventative backup. Do a little research, figure out what is right for you and stick to it!Good luck!

I have 2 of these units, one 300 GB, one 500 GB. These are fast, quiet, and reliable drives. I use one for media storage (music, videos) and the other for LAN backups once per week. These drives replaced external Maxtors, whom I've used and liked for many years. The external drives that I had (the One Touch II line) started acting flaky (USB strangeness), so I replaced them with these units and have been very happy.

I read many reviews for this product most of them positive so I joined the herd and bought one myself...and they're right! Its a great external hard drive for the price, quiet (to me), and sturdy. Bought it about a month and a half ago and have almost filled it up already (musician, running audio apps) and have not (so far) run into any problems with it. Converted to NTSC format to get larger files on and was seamless. I use it for storage and to run apps from so its GREAT...FIVE STARS! You won't be disappointed!EDIT: as of 7/2012 this seagate is still going and is in great shape!! hmmm...that's five years of work and it hasn't let me down yet! (yet!!!!!)

Seagate's support is little to none. In fact it's some of the worse support I've ever experienced. If you purchase any products from them make sure you get an extra plan for full replacement and if your data is mission critical go with another brand. Dont go through what I did.There are also issues with this product and Vista. There is a sleep function that cannot be controlled. When you go to save you have to wait 60 to 90 seconds for the hard drive to wake up from sleep mode. If you do a lot of saving or access the drive a lot, it's not a reasonable solution.

I really love this hard drive. It supports both USB 2.0 high-speed and FireWire IEEE 1394 connections -- a boon to those who have both. (On any given computer, you use either USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394 at a time, not both!) The drive is really fast and quiet. The power adapter is a bit too big, but since it's designed for desktop use -- and it's even stackable -- that's not a big hassle at all.I've had mine for a few months now and it's totally reliable. BTW I have a dozen other Seagate drives (internal and external, from pocketable to big desktop), and all are *very* reliable. As long as you don't drop this or use it as a door stop, it'll last a long time. Of course, always a good idea to have two backup drives. (I use a 300GB and a 200GB, and am planning to get a 1TB RAID drive soon.)The backup software that comes with the drive is decent. I use Retrospect which gives me encryption and other features, but is expensive and may be an overkill for most users. Try the Seagate backup software first; if you want something more powerful, then consider Retrospect.

I bought this drive because I needed the disc space for video editing. It worked fine for a couple of months then windows explorer kept locking up my computer while trying to access the drive. Seagate was zero help at all. Their suggestion was to reformat and start over. So I backed all my data and reformatted. 2 months later it is locking my computer up again. I have two WD external drives and they work great. If I unplug the Seagate then I have no problems. I will be buying a large internal to replace it.

I bought the seagate 400GB external hard drive from Amazon and I love it. It backs-up fast and is extremely user friendly. It comes with the needed back-up software of which many other external drives do not. With 400 GB I have as much memory space as I will ever need. I would highly recommend this product.

I work in the IT world, and I kept trying to deploy Enterprise-type backup solutions for my home LAN, like Retrospect backing up to Windows Server. What a nightmare. However, this USB Hard Drive and included backup utility, BounceBack have worked just great. Bounceback isn't super sophisticated, but it always works. One thing I really like is that when I mount the Seagate, I can actually see the backed-up files. With tools like Retrospect, all you see are some incomprehensible backup files. I can highly recommend this, and definitely plan on adding more as my storage needs increase.

I bought this after reading the reviews and the Consumer Reports recommendation. It was relatively easy to set up, with the emphasis on relatively. You do need to have some familiarity with cables and ports. This is not plug and play with the software all built in, merrily talking to Windows XP and setting itself up while you watch. In addition, the directions presume a degree of knowledge that the average user may not have and skip over some (admittedly basic) steps. Looking back, this is one of those items whose directions would benefit from some simplifying.However, I got it going and from that point, the set up was easy. I set the timer for backups in the early AM of the days after I do the most work (I have only USB1, so it goes pretty slowly) and it did the job perfectly.Tons of room--my son stores all his music files on it, too.NB: Has been working steadily and perfectly for over 5 years now. Absolutely no complaints. Worked flawlessly when I bought a new computer last month. Just backed the old one up, disconnected it, plugged it into the USB port on the new computer and dragged over the stuff I wanted.Caveat: remember to go in and clean out the thing occasionally. It will keep everything you back up, and deleting it on your hard drive will not delete it on your back up!

The IT Director at my school suggested this brand (he uses two Seagates at home), and the reviews below as well indicated this would be a good purchase. They were all correct. Very simple backups--I used the packaged software. The installation instructions can be wordy at times, but this is probably just to guide that person who gets confused as to where his "Start" button is on the desktop.Negatives: The detachable plastic base to help the drive stand vertically is pretty flimsy and doesn't do the job. The blue, status indication light is hard to see at times; the blue tends to fade in with the black front-casing. But these are the only things I could find wrong with the whole package! I mention the pathetic light complaint only to illustrate how pleased I am with the product.Hints: Definitely do as mentioned in a previous review and partition your drive. Note that external drives always have several gigs less than advertised (Approx. 280 of 300 gigs were available after I installed). I was going to get a 250 gig until I heard of this one, so get more than what you planned on.

I purchased this USB drive to backup my Olive Musica music server. I booted the drive, plugged it into the Musica, and it was immediately recognized as an external drive. Same results when I plugged it into my computer. The unit's whirring is audible (barely. I would rate the unit as extremely quiet, quieter than any other hard disk except for the Musica's), but since I can turn it off when I'm not backing up, or store it in the stereo cabinet, that's not an issue. The manual is simple and clear, and the accompanying software easy to use - although I did not use much of it.

This is a wonderful drive for the money with a dual firewire/USB interface. I'm using this with a Mac Mini with firewire. It's quiet, stackable, and pretty quick. I had to knock off half a star for some design deficiencies. Two grumbles - I cannot power this on and off through an external switch, such as a power distribution center. The drive has a combination on/off and click-backup switch which always comes up in the "power off" state. That's a minor annoyance. The second annoyance is that the firewire pass-through only operates while the drive in powered up. So, unless you have your drive up all the time, you will loose a firewire port for no good reason. Short of that - great drive for the money and I'm happy with it.

Bounce Back Express software is included. It is easy to install and backup of computer hard disk is easy.But they offer an upgrade software for about 50 dollars from CMS company called Bounce Back Pro. The installation is not simple for Windows Xp. I could install it with the help of CMS which required installing a substitute file, sent to me E-mail to allow the program to be installed in a way that it would not interfere with booting Windows XP. I thought all was well using a special procedure for the initial backup, but apparently you have to use the same special procedure with subsequent backup instead of using their software Backup Icon. I gave up and I only use the software supplied with the hardware purchased from Amazon.

Well, except that you can't turn the drive sleep function off...If you don't hit it often enough, there is a lag as the drive spins up and is ready to function.Not a huge issue except if you don't need it to sleep on you. The lag is rather long but in the sceme of things, not an eternity but I did have some issues with it sleeping and now use the drive for backup rather than data acquisition like I planned...Still, it's quiet, fast (when not asleep) and easy to place on the desktop...

This is a product I truly feel is a must have for computer users. I love the fact that it is both Firewire (1394) and USB 2.0 compatible. I use either connection frequently based on which system I am working on. The 300GB of space, though at times might seem small (video work), actually makes the development I do easier and with less overhead on the system. I own several different Seagate USB 2.0 products and this is the best investment I made.

Like many other people, I was hesitant about purchasing a Seagate 300gb external hard drive after the years of poor with the 300gb 8mb cache Seagate hard drive (for some reason, barely anyone seemed to have a problem with the Seagate 200gb and lower versions). But, with the more recent reviews, the hard drives seemed to work well.I've had my 300 GB 16 mb cache Seagate for over a week now and everything has been working perfectly. So far I've gotten over 100gb on it (college hubs are great). Installation on my Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop with Windows XP was essentially one touch, although I did opt to reformat (and partition to two drives) to us an NTFS file system rather than leave it as a FAT32 file system (you can do a quick search online if your not sure reformatting to use an NTFS file system is worth the effort).The drive runs very quietly, the slight hum of my laptop easily covers up the little noise it does make. Also, I like the idea of being able to hit a button to turn it off when it's not being used.It seems like what ever problems they've had producing the 300 GB 8 mb cache version that Amazon started to sell in 2004 was fixed when Amazon began to sell this more recent 300 GB 16 mb cache version in 2006. This is an excellent hard drive and I highly recommend purchasing this product.Note: I haven't used the BounceBack Express software it comes with to back up my Laptop hard drive due to finals coming around. I'm sure I'll get to it soon and will update my review if any problems should arise.

The Seagate 300 connects to my iMac with a firewire. The drive has been working well, although I no longer use the software that came with it, as the software did not work. The software that came with the drive is called BounceBack. It would constantly crash and was not compatible with my iMac. The customer service from BounceBack was very poor, and they could not solve my problems with the software. I now use the backup software that came with my .mac account, and it works fine. Remember if you buy this drive for a mac you will need to format the drive to be mac compatible. I would buy this drive again although the experience with the software was very frustrating.

This hard drive was well rated and I purchased it. I was doing well until I tried installing the enclosed program "BounceBack Express". This caused my brand new computer with Windows XP to lock up. I was able to retrieve most of my data but had to reinstall XP. When I tried BounceBack again, the same thing happened. This time I was able to use System Restore. The drive works flawlessly without the special software.

I bought this drive for photo/data storage but also as an media drive for recording music/video. I spend a lot of time working and saving, and this drive goes to sleep and takes 10 seconds to wake up. Sometimes it hangs longer when I'm trying to record audio with Gigastudio, whether I'm using the USB2 or Firewire connection. I emailed Seagate tech support, and this was the response: "Unfortunately Seagate drives have a sleep function built into them that is set for between 5-15min of not being in use. There is also no way to remove this function." So now I know. I researched this drive before buying, and I saw nothing about this in the literature. I will definitely purchase a different brand next time.

This is certainly one of the best external hard drives that I have ever owned. It really is reliable and has a much better build quality than many of the others that I have used. The 16 mb cache also makes a difference for those huge file transfers which I am apt to do. Firewire connectivity is also a great advtantage. Theoretically it should be slower than USB 2 but the type of connection to the PC allows it to be faster and to transfer files much more quickly.All in all, a great hard drive and one I truly reccomend.
