Update: a fellow Amazon shopper notified me that SanDisk uses a less reliable form of flash memory for this line of products (MLC) than the preferred type (SLC), thereby questioning the longevity claims. My star rating has been adjusted accordingly.As with the other reviewers, I'm not sure how to rate the SanDisk Memory Vault. Its main selling point is the claim that will reliably store data for up to 100 years, so there is no practical way to test this claim in the short-term. The potential appeal of the Memory Vault is based on assumptions that most available storage media (optical media such as CDs and DVDs, USB flash drives, and hard drives) have a limited lifespan measured in decades at the most (Google searches can provide more info on these). The argument goes that if you want your valuable photos and videos to last beyond this, you need archival-quality storage. Frankly, I'm not sure how many people stay up at night worrying about this, since there's probably a higher risk that any given storage medium will become obsolete before the data itself becomes corrupted (e.g. floppy drives).If we put this issue aside and look at the product itself, below are my observations to date:Pros:- The Memory Vault is heavy and solidly built. The pulsing LED is a nice touch.- If you read through the SanDisk literature, it appears that they have given a lot of thought on how to ensure data integrity over time- It is both PC and Mac-compatibleCons:- For the money, you don't get a lot of storage capacity. I had to think long and hard about which of my photos to commit to the 8GB of provided storage. Storing HD videos was out of the question.- There aren't a lot of bells and whistles. No auto-import software, no data encryption, really flimsy felt carrying case- Unlike some other USB flash drives (such as the Corsair Flash Survivor), it is not designed to be resistant to physical extremes such as water, fire, or high-force impact.Overall, it provides peace of mind for a select group of photos, but I wish it had more features for the price.

This is a finely made memory device of moderate capacity (by today's standards). It is very sturdy and works well. The kit includes a nice cloth bag, USB cable and instructions. The claim is that this is a super stable USB flash memory that is intended for archival applications. That may be the case - hard to tell for me. It seems like a reasonable claim.So, it's easy to use, and it is not as big as the pictures made it seem. The outline is about the size of a standard business card. It is about a half inch thick. If you need modest size archival storage (e.g. bank records, scanned property deeds, etc.) then this may be big enough. You could fill it up with documents that need backup and then store it in a safe deposit box at your bank or other off site location. Since it is much smaller than the documents you might otherwise physically store, this may result in some cost savings. In my opinion, this is nowhere near enough storage to keep family mementos (e.g. pictures and video).I gave it three stars because it is kind of expensive for an 8GB flash. I think that if the location is light, temperature and humidity controlled, you are better off storing your archival data on a pile of high quality DVD-R disks (e.g. NOT the cheap-o Fry's or Costco specials). You can make multiple copies, store them in multiple locations and save a bunch of money.

When it comes to saving your unreplaceable photos, documents or videos, nothing is as secure as a memory vault. With a memory vault, you have a totally sealed compartment compared to a Plug In, which has an open end. I have used a SanDisk Image Mate for downloading my photos for over a decade now. SanDisk is a name brand I trust completely, as I have to have the best photos with sharp, great detail for family history and magazine articles. SanDisk's transfers are the sharpest and clearest giving me perfect photos for my photo programs.This SanDisk Memory Vault stores my photos and videos in the clearest sharpest state and with the totally sealed vault, they will stay that way. The vault comes with a separate USB plug in cord and a cloth storage bag. There is a rubber cover over the Plug In USB port on the vault that you must remove to plug in the USB cord, before downloading your photos, videos or files. When you are finished you simply put the rubber plug back on sealing your photos for probably longer than your lifetime. With a comparable Plug In USB flash drive, such as a PNY Attache 8 GB for $20.00, you only have a 1 year warranty. Printing your photos is also a big difference. The Vault prints the sharpest prints possible, but the Plug Ins are not as clear. The Plug Ins get too much damage with the open plug- even simple dust, pollution or humidity damages the photos, not to mention the open plug itself can get damaged.I have stored photos on everything from CD's to Plug Ins to Vaults over the last decade. CD's and Vaults store and print the best photos. This SanDisk vault is a wonderful fully sealed protection for your photos and well worth the money if you are looking to protect your treasured photos, videos or other important documents for many, many decades to come. There is one important thing you should know, that these vaults even with a rubber plug are not waterproof, so if you want to protect it from being damaged should it ever be submerged in water- keep it in a waterproof container.

Can't get any easier to backup your pics that you have on your computer. Just plug in the USB cord, drag and drop whole folders or single pics into the Vault. If I can do it anyone can. Had typical fast delevery on this item too. Just wish it had 32gb or even more. Holds a lot of pics, but still fills fast if you are a real photo enthusiast. If you only take pics of birthdays and vacations it will probably hold 15 years worth of pics.

This is easy to use, looks great and has a USB connecter with a long cord.It took me less than a minute to store my first photos. I have Windows 7 on my pc. I attached the USB connector to the Memory Vault and my computer. I went to my computer which recognized the Memory Vault as removable disk J. I Clicked on disk J then clicked on my desktop where a picture folder was stored. I then copied the folder and pasted it to disk J. Thirty photos were transferred in the blink of an eye. The computer tells you when the transfer is complete and it is safe to disconnect the Memory Vault.I then took the Memory Vault to another computer and connected it. I went to Disk J and then easily copied and pasted the photos to the other computer. All is did is click select all, copy and then paste. It is so easy.When you connect the Memory Vault you get a screen asking where to go to transfer photos. For me the simplest thing to do is go through my computer.I love the look of this. It is silver. It looks about three inches long and about an inch and a quarter wide. It has a yellow light that is shaped like a triangle in one corner that blinks slowly when it is attached to the computer and doing nothing and more quickly when transferring data. It also comes with a nice storage pouch. It looks like a quality product.I like the USB connector because it has a long cord and my tower is about an arm's length away from my keyboard. I had no trouble attaching the connector and laying the memory vault, in front of me, on my desk.This also comes with labels that you can use to write what is in the Memory Vault. The only problems is considering the size of the Memory Vault you could have a notebook full of information on what is stored on the device.This is an easy to use memory device that looks great.

The thing that surprised me the most was the substantial weight for such a small product. San disk is the best and the only product I ever buy as far as memory cards etc. Also gave one to my daughter this year for Christmas and anxious to see what she thinks! easy to carry when I travel as well as transfer photos so I don't need extra memory cards

1) Nice and heavy for a USB drive = feels sturdy2) Silver case with red light made me think of Cylons from Battlestar Galactica = cool factor!3) It's NOT small & portable!!4) I looked around and I could not find any specs on general USB flash drives and their lifespan. This may be because most USB drives are intended to have a lot of read/write activity, which is what actually reduces the life of the unit6) 8Gb only?! For $50. Uh...I bought a 250Gb a year ago for that price. I could choose to store the 250Gb in a safe and not use it on a daily basis like I do and get the same results, from what I can tell.7) 8Gb only? Most digital cameras default to large images with high quality. 8Gb won't last long and that hasn't even taken into consideration any videos a person is taking with their iPhone or Flip video.8) Am I really going to store it for 100 years? No, because the technology will have changed in the next 10-15 years (well with my normal lifespan).9) Since the intent is to store information, the speed of the read/write process isn't a factor. So I didn't even consider it.10) Okay, there is a "safety" feature which controls how often you can read/write to the device, and that is a nice concept.OVERALL:Overpriced when you can buy an 8Gb USB for $10 in any store today!!I like the concept more than the delivery of the limited product!When the technology starts to change, you just transfer your USB data over to the new media/communication protocol in 10-15yrs.

The SanDisk "Memory Vault" *feels* like top quality. The heavy metal case is impressive! The "breathing" red LED lends a nice futuristic impression.When you get right down to it though, this is just another "USB Flash Drive". As best I recall, all flash memory will retain data for "100 years", the key technical factor is how many times a particular bit is rewritten. This is the only flash drive I've seen though which appears to keep track of it's usage and switches to "read only" mode after excessive usage.Unlike most flash drives, the SanDisk "Memory Vault" is not light, portable or easy to use (compared to other flash drives). Certainly it's portable, but it has a nice hefty non-trivial weight. It is larger than every other flash drive I've owned (3.25" x 1.75"). But the most inconvenient is that it uses a cable to connect to your computer rather than plugging straight in.This is a nice impressive flash drive, but you'll have to judge whether it's worth paying triple the price for the "quality". Surprisingly lacking are features such as encryption or some other form of locking or protection. Of course if you intend to read it 100 years from now (will we still have USB ports?) you might not want some obsolete encryption which is long forgotten.All in all, this is a nice high quality product with a great futuristic appearance.

Basically, as has been noted in the other two reviews already up, this is a flash drive that essentially performs the same function as any other flash drive: at heart a memory device. So, if used as what it's advertised for, it's a form of backup.At fifty bucks for 8 gigs of memory (the capacity of the unit I tested), it's really, really pricey. You can get a SanDisk 8 gig memory card right here on Amazon for about 4 bucks. This is over ten times more expensive.I can't figure out anything it can do that you can't do on any other memory card. It is, of course, much more robust than a memory card, so you do get physical protection of your data.At 8 gigs (or even 16) you're not going to be able to store a huge number of pictures, or especially home movies, on it.The advertised longevity of the stored data is 100+ years. I have no idea how long data will remain uncorrupted on a memory card. A long time, I suspect, if it's not being accessed and altered.If you're looking for secure backup, external hard drives are waaaaaaay less expensive per gig of RAM.I'm really puzzled as to what market niche SanDisk is trying to access with this device.

Expensive for only 8GB of storage space, but not much explanation as to why it costs so much more, other than it's supposed to preserve your data for at least 100 years. How is it different from a normal flash drive? Seems like an over priced gimmick. Really, I am much more worried about being able to connect this device to a computer and read the files years from now than I am worried about the data being corrupted.

I'm giving this 5 stars because it works perfectly, and it doesn't install any spyware or pop-up adware, which has been a problem with similar products in the past. You can just drag and drop the files you want to back up. No hassles there, so I am satisfied with that.My only complaints have to do with how hard it was to open the clam-shell packaging. I couldn't seem to get it open without tearing it, and it was a little hard on my hands. Also, there is a little rubber door over the USB port that you are supposed to be able to open with your fingernail, but of course I couldn't do it because I have acrylic nails, so I had to use a sharp object. It's probably not a good idea to stick sharp objects into USB ports, but whatever. It worked. A little nob on that door to make it easier to pull would have helped.Otherwise, this device worked as advertised, with no problems.

The SanDisk Memory Vault is pricey at nearly $50 for 8 GB but the flash drive is supposed to retain these photos and their quality for 100 years while the usual lifespan on a flash drive is supposed to be 10 years. As other reviewers have pointed out, very few of us will able to check if the photos do last 100 years since the technology will likely have changed by then.On the other hand, SanDisk offers a limited warranty that the Memory Vault will be able to retain the photos for 100 years. SanDisk has tested the Memory Vault through "temperature cycling" to simulate how the photos and flash drive would behave over time.While it's hard to tell whether the Memory Vault will live up to the 100 year promise, it might be worth using for those photos that you are particularly fond of. I've chosen my favorites and moved them to the Memory Vault in the hope that they'll retain their quality. It's another level of protection.

As others have stated, this flash drive's big selling point is it's "100 year" data retention claim. So, how do you test THAT? Impossible, so I will simply review what we know so far.As a flash drive, it works as stated. It is nice and heavy, and very stable on your desk. The idea is that this will be your dedicated special flash drive for those irreplaceable photos.There are several issues with this concept.First of all, the flash drive connects with a cable instead of a direct plug in, which seems like an unnecessary clutter and hassle. Secondly, that very heft and weight is a pain. Thirdly, 100 years, really? Technology will remain stagnant for the next century? Trusting in a 2012 flash drive would be like listening to a Victrola.

This memory vault has been a godsend in more ways than I can count. It already has been dropped and drooled upon and still kept my important documents safe. It's been used on an important business trip with sensitive material, and it saved my laptop it's memory and speed because off all the downloading and storage of pictures and videos that I have taken of my children and events. There does not seem to be a downside. It comes with everything that is needed as well as a soft velvet like pouch, It's portable, measuring less than 2 x 3 inches and is extremely easy to use.

Trust me, you don't want to not back up your files! I teach and at least twice a semester I hear some tale of woe from a student who has lost an entire hard drive to viruses or just mechanical failure. Sometimes it's fixable, sometimes, though, it's not.Don't take the chance, especially with those priceless pictures and all your music!This is a very easy to use device: a USB port and you simply copy files to it, and bingo. It's very solid and heavy in your hand, unlike a flimsy flash drive.Do yourself a favor: buy one of these. It's reasonably priced, easy to use, and solid. You'll thank yourself down the road!

This little drive is definitely built to last but it comes with a high cost. It's sleek and has a nice feel to it, but it's also heavy and difficult to carry around. It also requires a cable to connect it to a computer. I'm generally a huge fan of SanDisk but this product's value escapes me.I wonder why anyone would want a flash drive that saves his or her precious moments for 100 years. I really doubt that we'll have any kind of system that will read the drive in 20 years, much less 100. It'll be just like a floppy drive with no place to go. If I do want to preserve files for a while, I would rather buy four less expensive 8 GB drives and store them in different places, including a safe deposit box or a fire box at home. Of course, there's always the cloud. I also hope I'll have more than 8 GB of memories to preserve.This just doesn't seem like a very wise investment.

I have been using the SanDisk Flash Memory Vault for a few months now. I think it is a sturdy back-up method but not necessarily the best option depending on your needs. It is easy to use and PC/Mac compatible. The physical dimensions are a great size but it weighs nearly as much as an external hard drive. My drive is 8GB which I don't really think is enough storage for it's intended purpose of backing up photos - 8GB can fill up quickly. The 16GB option seems pricey compared to other back-up methods. CDs are also rated for 100 years and who can say if a USB connection or CD will be even be readily in existence in 100 years.

The "gimmick" on the packaging of this flash drive is that it's built to preserve photos and your memories. I'm not sure who they're marketing it toward with that description; ultimately it's just a flash drive. Moreover, it's NOT a thumb drive. While it is small enough to fit in your pocket, it's not as portable as a thumb drive would be. It does seem sturdy, I'm just not entirely sure what its purpose is - not enough storage to be a backup hard drive, but too large to be a portable drive? (That said, it worked easily for me with no problems and was easy to use.)

I think this is worth buying. You can get a virus in your computer and loose all of your pictures and videos. I did what the owners manal told me to do. I did not see anything pop up after it said installed. I had to plug it in again. then I had a choice of opening it up. You then go to your videos. Click on the video you want to save then slide it over to the device. It then copies it for you. I am not that good with computers so I hope this at least gives you an idea of how it works. It says on the box tested to support data for up to 100 years! Can't beat that.

I would have to say this a nice device to use to save important pictures. The great thing about it is that it's harder to lose in comparison to a flash drive. I also suspect it is safer than my other 2 external hard drives. The other thing that's great is the amount of storage space. It's the perfect size for storing pictures, because I don't need 100's of Gigabytes for pictures. I just need a safe place to back them up for years later.

This is a great little flash drive. It connects with a special USB cable it comes with, and is a bit larger than a normal flash drive. It comes with special labels to put on it too, and a nice little cloth storage pouch. This is neat if you need to back up files or pictures and don't need tons of space.

Really, it's just a flash drive. A thicker and longer one than the one you would put on your key chain, but a flash drive nonetheless. There's nothing that special about it.
