This is a flash drive with a difference, actually several differences.1) Unlike other USB flash drives this one is in what looks to be a very secure case. The case looks to be very rugged and capable of withstanding some of the usual hazards, such as dropping, that might damage a conventional drive. However, the instructions say to keep it away from water, so I assume that the case is not waterproof. I am not sure if the outside of the case is made from plastic with an aluminum coating or if it is made of aluminum. Whatever the outside of it is made of there must be some sort of interior metal framework as the device is heaver that it would be if it were made completely of plastic or aluminum. I weighed it on a small kitchen scale and it came in at about 3.25 ounces (about 90 grams). In contrast an SD memory card weighed only one gram.2) The memory is rated for 100 years. This is difficult to contrast to a standard memory stick or SD card, as I do not know how long their memory is expected to last, nor do I know how to verify such a long life.3) Unlike other memory sticks, this one does not have an internal USB port. Rather, one connects to it through a USB cable. I found this to be both good and bad. Good because the port on the cable did not block adjacent USB ports as it does on some other flash drives. Bad because one needs a separate cable. However, a case is provided for the drive and the cable so that they can easily be kept together.4) The loading process was the same as with any other flash drive and operated without any problems, but the usable memory is actually only 7.45 MB, so I could not quite load all of the family pictures that I wanted to. I was able to delete some pictures and work with the drive as I would have with any other flash drive.5) The drive has a red LED in the case that tells you if the drive is connected and it flashes when transferring files. My other USB flash drives also have this feature, but I can place this drive next to my keyboard so I can see the light. My other flash drives, which are not connected by a cable, remain hidden under my desk, where the guts of my computer resides. So what do you get - you get a robust USB flash drive that operated like any other flash drive, but is in a much more rugged case and has a memory that is supposed to last 100 years. It appears to meet all of the advertised specifications, at least the ones that I could test. This drive can obviously (if the claimed life is correct) be used for very long-term storage, but there are several other ways to do this. However, it is not clear how long the memory on SD cards, flash drives or DVD's will last and "cloud" storage can be more costly over the long run. There is also a very real possibility that the storage company may not be around 100 years from now. Of course there is a very high probability that 100 years from now computers may not even have USB ports or that their systems may not even be able to read the contents of the drive, however, your descendents would probably be able to find a museum or company that specializes of the retrieval of media of this type, just as you can find (with difficulty) organizations that can read real-to-real tapes and 8-inch floppy disks. I also see a unique use for this drive - I can see someone using this drive to transport very critical pictures, videos or files.I assessing this drive I have not taken its price into account because it is clearly stated and I believe that it is up to the potential purchaser to determine if the special features inherent with this drive warrant the higher cost relative to other flash drives.

Back when I first started printing digital pictures, I remember spending hours researching printer ink. Which ink would create pictures that lasted the longest? Then, it dawned on me that what was most important time wise was actually what was used to store the pictures. Hence, I ended up burning all the pictures on my desktop on Verbatim disks, which I then put in plastic CD cases and then placed all in a box. After getting a laptop, I used that to store all my new pictures, never burning them on disks or using an external hard drive to store them. In other words, my photo collection became a disorganized mess. But when I held this SanDisk Memory Vault in my hands, I knew I was looking at nothing short of motivation, and my disorganized photo collection would soon be a mess no more. The Memory Vault comes with written directions, and I am a huge fan of written directions, but I found them to be confusing, so I just winged it. Winging it proved to be simple. After plugging the SanDisk into any USB port, you just go to "Pictures" on your computer, select a folder or folders, right click "Send To", and find the SanDisk. On my laptop it was called "Removable Disk F". All the folders transferred very quickly. At first, after transferring a folder, I would then go to "Computer", click in "Removable Disk F", open it, and make sure the photos were there. They always were, so I stopped doing that after the first few folders.Next, there was the question of getting all the pictures from my desktop into the vault. Should I take all the Verbatim disks and import them to my laptop, or try using the Memory Vault with my desktop.? I decided to do the latter, even though my Dell desktop is 10 years old, and I haven't turned it on in two years. It has XP, too, instead of Vista, and I wanted to see if the Memory Vault would work as well with XP, if it would even work at all on such an old computer. It turned out to be just as easy and fast transferring photos on the desktop, as it was with the Dell laptop. The desktop immediately recognized the SanDisk, which I plugged in before turning on the PC, and it didn't state it needed software to work. I transferred hundreds of pictures in very little time, so that all the digital pictures I have ever taken are now in the Memory Vault. The SanDisk Memory Vault is very impressive looking, too, and comes with a lovely black pouch holder. The black pouch reminded me of my Lowepro Compact Media Case 20 for Portable Hard Drives, and that's where my Memory Vault is now stored. It fits nicely in the front pouch on the right, and there's room for the cord in back of it. The two of them would make a nice combination gift. Who would appreciate such a gift? After reading the other reviews on the Memory Vault, I imagine if you gave the gift to a high tech guy or gal, you might get a lecture on spending too much money for a flash drive. Try giving it instead to someone who loves digital photography, but is not real techie about it. Or give it to someone who will fill it with pictures and put it in a safe deposit box; because that's where it looks like it belongs. Or give it to someone who is getting married, because it would be perfect for storing wedding pictures. It's actually perfect for storing all sorts of pictures, and so easy to do so, too.

I like SanDisk products a lot and I have purchased their memory and storage devices on more than one occasion. But I've got to tell you that I think this item is a flat-out poor value.I suppose if we get hit by a nuclear blast and I survive, I might be happy that I've stored important data on this metal-encased flash drive as compared to a basic USB flash drive. But as of this writing, Amazon offers a SanDisk 8 gb USB jump drive for under $7. If you store data on either SanDisk drive, will it last 100 years? Who knows? I'll be long dead for sure. In 50 years I'll probably also be toast, although I could make it that long. I'm not entirely convinced the data that would still be on the SanDisk Memory Vault wouldn't also still be on the SanDisk USB flash drive. And if the data's corrupted decades from now, what do you do then? Do you hit up SanDisk for warranty replacement in 25 or 50 or 100 years (if they're still around)? Even if they are around, your data would still be gone and I'm pretty sure that drives of this type would be totally obsolete. It certainly works as you'd expect it to and seems to be well-made. You'd expect nothing less from a top-tier company like SanDisk. The Memory Vault is a lot more bulky and heavy than a USB jump drive and you also have to use a separate cable to attach it to your computer, which is inconvenient.I went back and forth trying to decide what rating to give this device. Again, SanDisk is a leader in the field and the quality of this item seems top-notch. Understand that we Vine members are provided with manufacturer's samples at no cost and review them in order to help buyers make an informed decision and I take this obligation seriously. If we are not honest in our evaluations, then the Vine reviews will not be credible. So I asked myself, "Self, is there any way you'd pay roughly $50 for this thing, or roughly $90 for the 16 gb version, as of this writing?" The answer is that there is no way that I'd pay their current asking price. Not only that, but again I don't like the relatively bulky format and separate cable that's required to use the device.I can't say that this isn't more stable memory, as it may very well be. But frankly, the entire marketing theme seems somewhat gimmicky to me. It seems like a way to squeeze more revenue out of a product that's similar to what you could typically buy much cheaper. Even if it does exactly what they say, I've never experienced information that was lost from a corrputed jump drive. I'm sure it happens though, but to me it's all about cost vs. benefit and this device fails in that analysis, in my view.If they offered a lot more storage for a similar price, or perhaps even a higher price, I might consider it. But as it stands, I consider this item to be a poor value and if I wouldn't buy it with my own money, I cannot suggest that you buy it with yours.

I will post my review of this flash drive in 100 years, since the only sensible thing to say is it held readable data for that long. In the meantime, be aware that Sandisk told me, in a private communication, that this device uses cheaper MLC chips (Multi Level Cell technology) which piggy-back data on individual cells, instead of the more expensive SLC technology (Single Level Cell) which stores one bit of data per cell. SLC is considered the more reliable storage medium. But overriding the MLC/SLC controversy is whether flash memory retains data *at all* when not used at regular intervals. There remains the chance that cells will simply lose their charge, whether or not they contain single or multiple bits of data. The best discussion of data longevity I've ever come across refers to Nature's habit of copying its creations from generation to generation. Do the same by copying your data at regular intervals to ever newer storage formats. Ask your children to do the same. We don't have to lose our heritage due to carelessness or blind trust in frail technology.

Long term data storage is a relatively big problem now that we're putting more and more of our lives on computers. Normal optical media supposedly only lasts "up to" 10 years. Normal flash drives lose data over time. Mechanical drives have parts that wear out, etc. There is a company bringing DVD-R-like drives and discs to the market that supposedly last at least 1000 years (they need special drives to be written to, but anything can read them). I've very curious about those, but I don't think they're out yet.At any rate, SanDisk's flash memory vault supposedly lasts longer than normal flash memory-"up to" 100 years. Sandisk provides a website with info about it, but it doesn't really explain why it supposedly lasts longer. Just that supposedly it's using a custom controller and flash that last better. They don't say, but one thing they might be doing is using SLC flash instead of the far more common MLC. SLC costs much more, but can also last much better because it's only storing one value per location, instead of 2. The cell has to degrade a lot more before the data would be lost. So I'd GUESS that's one of the things they're doing with this drive, but they don't say.Sandisk is one of the oldest and biggest producers of flash memory, so I'm inclined to believe them when they say this will last better...though it would be great to know for sure! I've had cheaper flash die on me with just a few uses...if nothing else I've never had a Sandisk product die on me so far.The unit is packaged with a small sort of felt-like slip cover you can stick it in, and includes a USB cable (the drive's powered by USB). The physical unit is surprisingly heavy. It FEELS well built, and like there must be metal used in its construction. It's got a pulsing orange light on it when in use.Performance is around 6MB/s for writes, and 18ish-20ishMB/s reads. Pretty normal for a flash drive, and much slower than a normal hard drive.Besides being unsure about how long this will really last, the other obvious issue is just that it costs a lot for the amount of storage you get (another reason I'm guessing they're using more expensive SLC flash). It's enough to back up documents, but probably a lot of people have more than 8GB of photos they've taken-to say nothing of video! But at any rate, the Flash Memory Vault works, and given Sandisk's reputation probably really is better than normal flash drives for longer term storage.

The memory vault arrived in perfect working order. SanDisk indicates that the data storage is of archival quality. The life of data stored on ordinary thumb drives is problematic. I wanted something that has a reasonable chance of storing data for the long term, given the proper handling of the media. Only time will tell if this is successful. I would prefer a USB 3 Vault, but none are available at this time. The Vault functions exactly as SanDisk advertised.

Update: a fellow Amazon shopper notified me that SanDisk uses a less reliable form of flash memory for this line of products (MLC) than the preferred type (SLC), thereby questioning the longevity claims. My star rating has been adjusted accordingly. As with the other reviewers, I'm not sure how to rate the SanDisk Memory Vault. Its main selling point is the claim that will reliably store data for up to 100 years, so there is no practical way to test this claim in the short-term. The potential appeal of the Memory Vault is based on assumptions that most available storage media (optical media such as CDs and DVDs, USB flash drives, and hard drives) have a limited lifespan measured in decades at the most (Google searches can provide more info on these). The argument goes that if you want your valuable photos and videos to last beyond this, you need archival-quality storage. Frankly, I'm not sure how many people stay up at night worrying about this, since there's probably a higher risk that any given storage medium will become obsolete before the data itself becomes corrupted (e.g. floppy drives). If we put this issue aside and look at the product itself, below are my observations to date:Pros:- The Memory Vault is heavy and solidly built. The pulsing LED is a nice touch.- If you read through the SanDisk literature, it appears that they have given a lot of thought on how to ensure data integrity over time- It is both PC and Mac-compatibleCons:- For the money, you don't get a lot of storage capacity. I had to think long and hard about which of my photos to commit to the 8GB of provided storage. Storing HD videos was out of the question.- There aren't a lot of bells and whistles. No auto-import software, no data encryption, really flimsy felt carrying case- Unlike some other USB flash drives (such as the Corsair Flash Survivor), it is not designed to be resistant to physical extremes such as water, fire, or high-force impact.Overall, it provides peace of mind for a select group of photos, but I wish it had more features for the price.

This is a finely made memory device of moderate capacity (by today's standards). It is very sturdy and works well. The kit includes a nice cloth bag, USB cable and instructions. The claim is that this is a super stable USB flash memory that is intended for archival applications. That may be the case - hard to tell for me. It seems like a reasonable claim. So, it's easy to use, and it is not as big as the pictures made it seem. The outline is about the size of a standard business card. It is about a half inch thick. If you need modest size archival storage (e.g. bank records, scanned property deeds, etc.) then this may be big enough. You could fill it up with documents that need backup and then store it in a safe deposit box at your bank or other off site location. Since it is much smaller than the documents you might otherwise physically store, this may result in some cost savings. In my opinion, this is nowhere near enough storage to keep family mementos (e.g. pictures and video).I gave it three stars because it is kind of expensive for an 8GB flash. I think that if the location is light, temperature and humidity controlled, you are better off storing your archival data on a pile of high quality DVD-R disks (e.g. NOT the cheap-o Fry's or Costco specials). You can make multiple copies, store them in multiple locations and save a bunch of money.

When it comes to saving your unreplaceable photos, documents or videos, nothing is as secure as a memory vault. With a memory vault, you have a totally sealed compartment compared to a Plug In, which has an open end. I have used a SanDisk Image Mate for downloading my photos for over a decade now. SanDisk is a name brand I trust completely, as I have to have the best photos with sharp, great detail for family history and magazine articles. SanDisk's transfers are the sharpest and clearest giving me perfect photos for my photo programs. This SanDisk Memory Vault stores my photos and videos in the clearest sharpest state and with the totally sealed vault, they will stay that way. The vault comes with a separate USB plug in cord and a cloth storage bag. There is a rubber cover over the Plug In USB port on the vault that you must remove to plug in the USB cord, before downloading your photos, videos or files. When you are finished you simply put the rubber plug back on sealing your photos for probably longer than your lifetime. With a comparable Plug In USB flash drive, such as a PNY Attache 8 GB for $20.00, you only have a 1 year warranty. Printing your photos is also a big difference. The Vault prints the sharpest prints possible, but the Plug Ins are not as clear. The Plug Ins get too much damage with the open plug- even simple dust, pollution or humidity damages the photos, not to mention the open plug itself can get damaged.I have stored photos on everything from CD's to Plug Ins to Vaults over the last decade. CD's and Vaults store and print the best photos. This SanDisk vault is a wonderful fully sealed protection for your photos and well worth the money if you are looking to protect your treasured photos, videos or other important documents for many, many decades to come. There is one important thing you should know, that these vaults even with a rubber plug are not waterproof, so if you want to protect it from being damaged should it ever be submerged in water- keep it in a waterproof container.

Can't get any easier to backup your pics that you have on your computer. Just plug in the USB cord, drag and drop whole folders or single pics into the Vault. If I can do it anyone can. Had typical fast delevery on this item too. Just wish it had 32gb or even more. Holds a lot of pics, but still fills fast if you are a real photo enthusiast. If you only take pics of birthdays and vacations it will probably hold 15 years worth of pics.
