I have had 3 of these break in the last year. The Samsung warranty was efficient in replacing them; however, now this line is owned by Seagate. From my experience they are simply not very reliable - they have all broken in RAID arrays.

I was so excited to get this drive because my 250gb hard drive in macbook pro was nearly full. I installed it and the noise was too loud and unbearable. Do not buy if you can't bear the silence of your laptop. Not worth the money.Look elsewhere.

I bought four of these drive to put in my NAS - a Synology DS410. After formating for a RAID5, I got about 4.2GB of usable data. These drives all worked right of the box, no failures (yet). The packaging was awesome so they all arivved safe and sound. These drive were on the compatibility list of my NAS, but not only that, they got the best reviews when compared to Seagate or WD for the same type of drives. (WD has upgraded their firmware on their non-enterprise drives to not work with RAID well to help push their more expensive RE editions)These drives are definitly the best bang for your buck. I got these drives because they are "Eco Friendly." Since my NAS is on all the time, I wanted a lower energy using and coler running drives. These fit the bill perfectly. Even at peak use, they are only running between 39-43 degrees Celsius. The hottest one being right above the mainboard in the NAS. Plus, my NAS is in a cabinet (with the back panel removed) so it doesn't have as much air flow as it would sitting on top of a desk. Write speed for very many large files, about 350 movies copied over at once, was a solide 42-43 Mb/s on my Gig-E network. It would peak at the beginning at about 60-65 Mb/s so I have to see if there is some sort of caching offered by my NAS to help improve this. However, the 43Mb/s speed definitly decent and since I am only writing that much data once, it's perfectly acceptable. I have actually seen other reviews of my NAS that said ~40Mb/s max with 7200 RPM drives with 64 MB cahce, so It's most likely my NAS.

I received two of these drives pre-installed in a Buffalo Technology LinkStation RAID NAS (LS-WV2). They run quietly and thus far have stood up to the demands placed in them in regular backup tasks fed to the NAS.No issues have emerged during weekly RAID checks run by the NAS system software. While the true test of any hard drive comes over time, in their first months of operation these work just fine. 1 TB for around 50 bucks; hard to go wrong.

I installed this drive as a non-raid device, to serve as backup for my raid pair, and for storage of all my media files. Installation was painless (it went into the lower bay of my ANTEC 182 case, and plugged into the SATA plugs on my ASUS P5E3 mobo (though I did have to move some of the other device plugs, as I have 2 SATA DVDs and an E-SATA port). The drive is very big and thus verifying all of the sectors with Disk Manager takes some real time (like hours), but only needs to be done once, IMHO, unless obvious issues arise. All the space is there (I partitioned into two, one 500gig and one 900plus gig. All is well. The drive runs coolly, is quiet (riding on the silicon dampers that Antec supplies), and much faster than any USB2 device would be.Based on the spec's, it is not fast enough for a primary drive, or I would have given it 5 stars, overall. Great to use when and where there is not the need for ultimate speed, and where price matters.Recommended.

Just ordered 3 (max it would let me) from Amazon, and picked a 4th one from a local MicroCenter. They are installed using rubber gromets, and when all 4 are running at full speed, I can't bearly hear them. When the case is closed (I have a sound dampening case) - I don't hear anything.I bought it for these reasons:1. I wanted a green drive that would work well with RAID, the others I looked at WD Caviar Green and Seagates - had issues with RAID.2. I was torn between the 2TB model F3EG, but went with the 1.5TB - simply for lower cost per TB while still having redundancy. I don't plan on upgrading for a long time. If I do - I guess I'll rebuild to newer interface (SATA 3).3. Quiet drive, since I have already spent some money to get my case to an inaudible level. So far, it is quieter than I could have expected.4. Wasn't really worried about speed - something good enough. In RAID5, I get reads of 300+MB/s, and write of 30-40MB/s (write-cached disabled) and 200+MB/s (write-cache enabled). I have write-cahced enabled write now - since I'm moving a lot of data over, I might consider disabling it, since I don't see a constant write of 30+MB/s in regular operation.5. I wasn't planning on using it as an OS disk - only for storage. It would have been nice if they had inclded a SATA cable. I realize it's an OEM - my fault that I didn't pay attention. All in all, great purchase so far. I hope the drives lives to at least 3 years - that's when I might consider upgrading.

Had this thing from the shipping box, to fully installed within ten minutes.Just make sure you have SATA drive and power cables on hand, you'll need them and this does not come with any included.(If you don't have any cables, search for them on Amazon. I got both cables for about $2.50 in total)I cannot speak of it's longevity, simply because I have not had it very long at this point. It has been 100% reliable thus far though, and already has about 500gb of data stored on it.This is an amazing upgrade, and extremely worth while for anyone needing storage space (I am a photographer and HD video editor myself). It's not long ago that 1.5TB would have been a small fortune to purchase, so being able to plug 2 or 3 of these into a home PC is amazing. If you're on the fence about purchasing this (as I was), just do it. You will have no regrets...~Rusty

1.5 TB drives are commonly the best 'GB per dollar' value, and this one is no exception. Some people are loyal to certain companies for their HDDs (Western Digital fanboys, I'm looking at you) is a bit silly to me, but these Samsung drives are pretty darn stable, and has got me convinced. Anyway, these EcoGreen drives are very quiet, even with five of them running right next to each other, and a big fan on them, they're very quiet. I know drives can fail randomly, and no one company can build a drive that will always be better than another, but these Samsungs seem to be very very safe.

The 1.5TB Samsung EcoGreen is the best I have tried so far.Western Digital 500 GB My DVR Expander - No power button.Toshiba PH3200U-1EXB 2TB - Would shut down after 30 minutes idle and not wake up.The following drives are internal drives used in a Rosewill Enclosure:500GB Seagate Barrcuda - Noisy when processing more than 1 video stream, and shut down when idle for more than 30 minutes and not wake up without power button.1TB Hitachi Deskstar - Shut down and wouldn't wake up after 30 minutes idle without power button.1.5 TB Western Digital Caviar Green - Shut down and wouldn't wake up after 45 minutes idle without power button.1.5 TB Samsung EcoGreen - Noisy during recording when playback is fast forwarded (thus only four stars), but has not shut down yet, or at least has reliably awakened, after up to 4 hours idle so far.

This is my 4th one of these, they are cooler, quieter, and use less power than any other hard drives I've had.Of course, it is a 5400RPM drive, so you aren't going to get the performance of a 7200 or 10000 RPM drive- but of course, those are hotter, louder, use more power, and probably wear out faster.Note, am moving from an array of 6 Samsung Spinpoint 500GB drives to 4 of these (Raid5 from 2.5T to 4.5T...), and I _never_ have had a problem with a Samsung hard drive.
