I almost went with a different brand due to all the reviews about leaking. Well, I got my new Rowenta, and saw there was leaking right away. I had filled the iron with water and started pressing the steam button when I noticed the problem. After doing my own troubleshooting, I realized that the iron arrives with the steam function knob turned off (which makes sense). I turned the knob from no steam to full steam, and voila--the leaking stopped and the steam started working full force. It does make sense that if you are pressing the steam button, but the steam knob is set to off that something like a leak would happen. Happy that I went ahead and got this iron again and figured out the issue on my own. (By the way, it is not to say that one could not end up with a lemon that just doesn't work.)

Pros-
- The cord is a long
- The water tank is definitely big for one ironing streak
- Lots of steam holes
- There is a self cleaning to prolong irons life
- The pointed tip is perfect for precision ironing like a pro

In summary
Pros: tapered nose
Cons: doesn't heat as well as some irons, inefficient steaming mechanism, bulky requiring slow purposeful ironing, overpriced for what it actually does, smells like burnt plastic at highest heat setting - which seems to be required for anything cotton
Bottom line: try something else before you get this OR if you don't iron a lot of cotton dress shirts or pants this might be perfect for you

1. Leaks after a few months/year, whatever - I can't comment on that. But look at what the positive reviewers are saying.
2. It's too heavy - Yes, it's heavier than the iron you bought for $25 12 years ago. And the heft helps you actually do a GREAT job ironing your clothes. It's not "too" heavy, it's just heavier than the cheap irons.
3. Have to refill the tank too often - You have to refill so frequently because you're using 400 holes at once in full steam mode to really flatten out those wrinkles. Yes, I had to refill the iron. But man was it worth it.
4. The water level is too difficult to see with the brown window - I agree, it's harder to see than it might have been with a clear window/tank but the water level is still easily discernible as long as you're not ironing in the dark. Which you shouldn't be doing anyway, okay?
5. The buttons to add steam or a spray are too close to where you hold your hands and they're pressed by mistake too easily - Yes, they are close and yes, I pressed them by mistake a couple of times. By my third shirt I was used to it and not making that mistake anymore. So it's a temporary problem as long as you have normal eye-hand coordination. On the flip side, the buttons are large and very easy to press when you want to.
Great iron.

I usually don't write many reviews, but wanted to help others with my opinion in using the Rowenta DW5080.
This was my 1st Rowenta iron and for the most part, I really loved this iron. Mainly due to it being a heavy iron with plenty of STEAM.
In previous years I would only purchase 1700-watt T-Fal irons. Mainly because I usually get at least 4-6 years of quality ironing and no problems. I just wanted their newer model of a 1700-watt iron, so I chose the T-Fal FV4376 ultra glide iron (last T-Fal prior to purchasing a Rowenta). To me the T-Fal prices was not that expensive (always less than $40 at that time of purchase).
However, since I always heard that Rowenta made excellent longevity type irons, I decided to shell out the extra bucks.
During the 3 years of ownership of the 1700-watt DW5080, I would grade this model as a A+. Heavy iron, plenty of steam (A+++), smooth face plate and got out wrinkles quickly, uses regular tap water, turned off automatically and a very heavy solid feeling iron. But for the extra $50 (when comparing the price, I paid for my T-Fal) and only 3 years, 3 months of use, the DW5080 now leaks.
So, in my opinion, my T-Fal lasted longer, much lighter weight iron, steam (grade “A”), but not as excellent as the DW5080, but they both are 1700-watt iron. But, I like the feel of the Rowenta while ironing. Much heavier solid feeling iron.
I will try another Rowenta 1 more time to see if it last as long as my previous years of the T-Fal ultraglide models. Now, just waiting for the Rowenta DW9081 to arrive.

So back to the Rowenta. I put tap water in - as per instructions - and man this thing steams like a sauna! Gets creases out, and doesn't play around putting creases in like other irons... fabric just gets flat. Like table top flat. 1 pass. Boom, done. It amazed me that an iron could put out heat and steam like that.
I quilt and make this top with lots of seams. Bam. Seams are in and I didn't even have to press the steam button. That Rowenta was putting out steam like no tomorrow and that top was ironed and pressed in nothing flat - literally less than half the time it takes me to set up, I was done. I am more than impressed. I really really like my Rowenta.

6. The spray and steam burst buttons are also in the way. I had to hold it unnaturally far back on the handle to avoid pressing those. I do have pretty long fingers so maybe if you are petite, it won't be a problem.
7. This is a personal preference, but it's a bit too heavy for my liking.

Now for all the good things about Rowentas that keep me coming back. These irons have weight to them—not too much, but enough to get a really good press on my husband’s cotton shirts. The design is good and comfortable. The sole plate glides perfectly, and the tip is designed to get into corners and beside buttons. Also, these irons really heat up. With high heat, a nice weight, and a comfortable, slick glide, ironing is a pleasure.
As a bonus, Amazon has a great price on this one!
