The installation using USB PORT IS A only 5 minutes job.
The speed is superb.
Amazon delivery was top class.
The reason why i went for a laser was, because i need to print very rarely and i have seen inkjet ink needing replacement even if you don't use your printer.
Pros:
* Has a Rj45 port so you can attach to your router and print from any device (as long they support it, more about it below).
* Start time is decent. Within 15 seconds its available for printing.
* Has a bypass tray to feed in paper of other sizes.
* The print quality is good enough. It may not be the same as your office printer which costs > 50K
* Dimensions are ok for a SOHO.
* You can connect using the USB port if you wish but it does not comes with a USB printer cable.
Cons:
Stay tuned. I will update it once i come to know any. I suspect the toner cartridge might not give exact 1000 prints.
Now about the print drivers. On the ricoh website it says only Windows and Mac are supported. But i was able to make it work on Linux as well. All you have to do is connect this guy to your LAN and open the "add printer dialog". Make sure you have installed CUPS package. Search for a PCL laser driver and chose the generic driver. See screenshot in attached photo.
Only issue i think is that on Linux TTF fonts are not that crisp. You need to install msft ttf fonts for better looking prints. Thats it folks.
I strongly recommended you, dont buy this..... if you take 500 pages or less that that of it, you have to change toner catridge fully.. toner catridge worth is 5500. Their aim is purchase the toners.... once you purchase the printer, you have to change the 3 toner with in year.....
I want to zero star... but it is not here... so i gave 1 star
No spares available on the open market. From Rich Service, I got a repair estimate of INR 20400 for this INR 4500 printer.
The Printer has a web panel and you can set a lot of features and see you ink, status and even send alerts by email in case of lower toner or printer jams and other errors!!!
It prints fast, duplex as well.
Fixing it up and placing the toner is a breeze. Unlike most printers, this one has an on/off switch at the side! It also has a QR code to help you connect your mobile.
For its price, even if it last for a year, its still value for money. You can refill the toner and change the chip counter which still works out less than Rs 1000. Eventually you need to change the drum, if you manage to print beyond 10,000 pages. Which means you have gone thru 6 refills or changed 6 toner cartridges (prices range from 2k to 4 k)
Got a great bargain at < Rs. 3K ! (From another eCommerce site, at that time Amazon pricing was higher)
Wanted a duplex and networked printer at a 'reasonable' cost. At the pricing above it was an absolute steal ! Was a bit afraid that the shipped product may not be new or in good condition, but figured that in that case, I could return it. So......
Now, although the box that arrived was apparently opened (invoice was inside the box - should have been outside the box if the box was factory sealed), the product itself appeared new based on the cleanliness and the fact that all other tapes, etc as are usually stuck to he printer appeared untouched. Ditto with the supplied toner cartridge (tapes appeared untouched). What bothered me was that the USB cable supplied was obviously an after market and a rather cheap, unbranded 'Made in China' piece. Since I wasn't planning on using the USB cable for printing anyway, it did not bother me too much. (Note: the USB cable is not listed in the package contents). The power cord was a bit of a disappointment though, just a two pin cable, with a hole where the 'Ground' pin should have been. Given that the printer requires a 'ground', the printer should have been supplied with a proper 3-pin power cable. Nevertheless, an additional Rs. 50/- later (sigh! that just took the printer over the Rs. 3K mark! :-/ ), I was all set to start printing.
Before you ask, no - a network cable is NOT supplied with the printer (any networked printer for that matter, not just this one. You are supposed to buy that on your own)
And now, if I haven't scared you off from buying the printer...... :-)
For those who are wondering....
* YES ! It has a PROPER DUPLEX PRINTING functionality (Read - AUTOMATIC DUPLEX PRINTING. Yay !!)
* YES ! It has a PROPER NETWORK functionality.
And for Linux aficionados,
* YES ! It can be made to work on Linux (Incidentally, I have only tested the printer on Linux :-D ! I do NOT use Windows, but am assuming that it should work on Windows too ! ;-) :-P
Haven't tested much, but can confirm that the following features worked on Linux (for me anyway :-) ). Tested with openSUSE 12.2 and RHEL 6.
1) Toner saving configuration
2) Single sided printing
3) AUTOMATIC DUPLEX PRINTING (Yay !!! This is what I bought this printer for in the first place)
4) Network Printing
5) Web based administration for printer management
I am (currently) satisfied with the above functionality.
Now for those who have been complaining about the high price of replacement toner cartridges (apparently the toner cartridge costs more than the printer, although I have not bothered to check that out), how much would YOU rather spend?
Approximately Rs. 4.5K for the printer (currently displayed price for the printer) and say approx. Rs. 5K for the toner cartridge ?
OR
Approximately > Rs. 10K-15K for the printer (I do not know of any other duplex and network enabled printer for less than 10-15K) and say approx. Rs. 5K for the toner cartridge ?
Personally, I would rather get my printer + one replacement cartridge in less than Rs. 10K, than spend over Rs. 15-20K for the same functionality.
Choose the math that works for you ! :-P
So why rate it 5/5? Well, I wanted to rate it 4 (for the apparently opened box, the cheap USB cable, and the 2-pin power cable supplied), but then felt happy with the functionality vs price ratio (and remember I did say that the actual unit and toner appeared untouched) and decided to give it 4.5/5. Since that option was not available... decided to give the printer the 'benefit of the doubt' ! :-)
PROS:
See above
CONS:
1) Should be supplied with a proper power cable
2) Weighs about 12 KG (Then again, can't imagine a 'proper' printer such as this weighing less...)
3) Network is just 10/100 Mbps (I have a Gigabit network, so that may just be nit-picking for some)
As you might have guessed, no significant 'cons'.
OBSERVATIONS:
Excellent for personal / home / small business use for light to medium printing needs.
For those not quite familiar with network printers, you need set a permanent IP address through the web based administration console (Network settings). The instructions are in the manual(s) supplied with the printer. It is fairly simple to configure (if you know TCP/IP Addressing. If not, get help from someone who does. But don't blame the printer ! :-D )
Also the Windows 7 64-bit drivers can be downloaded through Ricoh India's support website
If you decide to buy this printer (as I did), happy printing !
