Yes, it's 2011 and there are more powerful handhelds around like the new Nintendo 3DS and soon the Sony NGP, I myself have a Nintendo DSi XL, but in my opinion, nothing can beat (yet) this perfect little machine called the Gameboy Advance SP, bear with me and read along please.The first Gameboy Advance released in 2001 was a joke, it was big and ugly, with no lit screen and using standard AA batteries that died in few hours it was a horrible handheld indeed, you had to resort to rechargeable batteries or annoying 3rd party "lamps" to get a good experience out of that GBA. Then the GBA-SP came in 2003 to solve all those problems but it still used a front-lit screen (bad design decision), but soon after a redesign appeared (GBA-SP model AGS-101) with a powerful back-lit screen and it was (and still is in my opinion) the perfect gaming handheld. Be aware that this model is a bit hard to find nowadays, few units where produced, you can identify it by the unit color: Gray (called Graphite), Cyan (called Pearl Blue) and Pink (called Pearl Pink). There is also a Silver GBA-SP with back-lit screen but it is identical to the front-lit Silver, so look in the back of the console for the model, if it reads AGS-101 then is a back-lit device. Trust me, the back-lit screen makes a HUGE difference and a much better gaming.The unit is extremely small and portable, measuring 8x8x2cms (closed) and at just 140gr it fits in any pocket ready to be carried around, the new 3DS and the PSP just can't beat the GBA-SP portability, they are big and heavy. The rechargeable battery last between 10-12hrs, compare that with the 3-5hrs of battery life of the 3DS or the PSP...But, what makes this the winner for me is it's compatibility with the hundreds of classic Gameboy (GB) and Gameboy Color (GBC) games, so you have a HUGE library of awesome games for GB, GBC and GBA and you can play ALL of them on this little gem (with some exceptions). Yes, Nintendo will release soon a Virtual Store for the 3DS so you can buy classic GB games and play them on the 3DS, but to me the experience and feeling is not the same like popping in your old GB, charming little cart and play like it was mean to be, and I doubt so much good games like R-Type and Adventure Island will be available on the 3DS.The GBA-SP may surely not appeal the younger or the people that want the latest cutting-edge devices, but it DOES appeal old-school gamers like me that loved those "real" games on their NES and SNES, with ports like the Super Mario Advance 1-4, Zelda: A Link to the Past and the hundred of classic GB games like Super Mario Land, AND with the ability to play them ANYWHERE, these kind of gamers will feel like in heaven with a GBA-SP, if you loved your classic platforming and shoot-them-up you should get a GBA-SP now. Trust me, this is the perfect console for old-school gamers.The only complains are the lack of a headphone jack and that some old games are really hard to find, but a big plus is that you can find some of them REALLY cheap, I got some classic games even at 2-3$ each! The handheld itself is really cheap compared to the new ones.I have my GBA-SP and I'm in love with it, my DSi and 3DS can't just compete with the awesomeness that is the GBA-SP. Get one now, you'll not regret.

This is probably the best Game Boy model made. The flip design is really sturdy and it has a backlight, which makes it easier to play in the dark. The buttons feel really nice, and click, rather than just push down. It can play every type of Game Boy game (Game Boy, GBC, GBA), and it has a rechargable battery, which is one of my favorite features of it.The only con I can find about this is that it doesn't have a headphone jack, unlike just about every model of Game Boy released before it. However, you can buy an adapter that allows you to plug in your 3.5mm jack headphones.I have almost every Game Boy model, and I use the SP more than any other one I have.

There was a name carved on the back of the consol BUT I'm going to replace the whole entire shell so it's ok but it worked perfect and a very nice product and came with charger very happy about that I didn't need one but I got one so pretty happy over all

I bought a GBA SP used for $70.00 It came with the system, a case, a leather protection case, an attached Extra battery life pack, and a starter game. The GBA SP Was claimed to be an AGS 101, which it was, in very good condition, more on that later... and have a flawless screen. I am trying to be a hard-core retro gamer, so I checked out some reviews and they all told me that if I want to be retro, this is the right system. I was told that the GBA SP AGS101has a bright backlight, correct, supports GB/GBC Games, correct, and has a long battery life, correct. It IS the right system, but I still feel a bit cheated, even though I'm not. The GBA SP itself had a LOT of scratches on the outside. The paint was worn off ton some of the edges a bit, and the screen is anything BUT flawless. It has many light scratches, but you can only see them in direct sunlight. The extra stuff i got made up for the wear, and I'm thinking of getting a mario Linyn skin protector to cover up the scratches. I got a game called "Tomb Raiders" with the system, but I hate it. I'd sell it, but the procedure is so complex that I think I should just give it to gamestop. The only problem is, though, that gamestop no longer carries GBA games, so I'm SCREWED!! I give the seller a 5/10, but I give the system a 10/10.Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP - Graphite

I thought that there would only be a few minor scratches due to being used but when I opened it there was so much ware all over the SP, even the charger was squeaky and scratched. I bought it to play games on not for looks, all and all I'm content with it

The GBAsp was a pretty good purchase price worthy and for being used. Only thing though, was that the seller forgot to mention there was three DEEP scratches on top of the GBAsp, not to mention that the battery had to be replaced after just one day. Seller needs to be more discriptive. But other then that it works and plays games fine.

The Game Boy itself arrived safe and sound and exactly as described. However, it came with a game cartridge (emerald) which does not work. We tried it another Game Boy and it didn't work there either. Then we inserted a game we already owned into the Game Boy we had just purchased and it worked perfectly. The Game Boy was the most important thing, but my daughter was disappointed that the enclosed game did not work.

I wanted a simple 'puzzle' handheld game that didn't involve rapid finger and thumb movement because I'm simply too old for kid's games. This is a kid's game and nothing I read in advance prepared me for that. Apparently all the reviews are written by youngsters who love to wail at the keys before losing to a relentless clock. The game console (used) arrived in excellent condition but it was just a shell. NO included games, NO instructions. I ordered two games (Tetris, Mario Bros) which also came without instructions. Eventually I figured out what was needed but, again, not what I wanted. I've asked the kids selling Wii, PS2 & 3, etc., and none seemed to understand I wanted puzzle or adventure games - NOT action games requiring manual dexterity, so they didn't know what I should buy. I'm afraid the days of King's Quest and Liesure Suit Larry are gone forever, or at least anyone that knows about such things are nowhere to be found. Guess I'll go watch some TV...

I was disappointed when I got it. I was expecting slight scratches but a lot and dirty. I was really, really disappointed. I will never purchase used stuff.

If you are into actual gameplay and you don't own a PSP or DS yet then you should consider THIS GBA. It has a backlit display (crucial) and a rechargeable lithium ion that seems to last at least ten hours per charge.For the price of a PSP, or even a DS, you can purchase one of these AND many classic cartridges.I would recommend this to anyone looking for quality over cutting edge tech.

It is still a mystery to me. Which portable console released is the ruler? The god of portable gaming goodness? Is it the gameboy advance, the game boy advance sp, the nintendo DS, the nintendo ds lite edition, or the Playstation Portable? Right now, I'd have to say none.The nintendo game boy advance sp is a leading contender, though. Why, you may ask yourself? This system has a colossal software library. Not only does it play game boy advance games, but it also plays game boy color and original game boy games. Another words, if you want a nice selection, turn here. It also has a nice backlight; This is the only gaming system that allows you to play Game boy color and advance games with a backlight. Seems like a perfect portable, right?Wrong. You see, even though It is awesome in the ways I've mentioned prior, It still has one HUGE flaw. Console design. Unless you have baby sized hands, you will find your hands cramping up playing this. The reason this happens is because the d-pad and the "b" and "a" buttons are extremely close to each other. Also, the console is not wide enough. The Original Game boy advance was not a hand cramper because the d-pad and the face buttons were at a normal lengths apart. Is this one a winner? No. It has no backlight, so the Game boy advance and the Advance Sp are about equal when it comes to overall experiance.Now for the Nintendo DS. It has two backlit screens and the bottom screen is touch-sensitive. It has 64-bit graphics.(Roughly the equivalent graphics of a Nintendo 64.) It has built in WiFi, so there is no need for those damn link cables. WiFi allows you to wirelessly play multiplayer with anyone who has a DS in a 100 foot radius. It is backwards compatible with Game Boy Advance Games.That's Game Boy ADVANCE games. You can not play your game boy color and original game boy games on this thing. That's the main folly. By doing this, Nintendo eliminated a truckload of titles. The only other mistakes on the DS is the fact that is is huge for a handheld,(you'll be lucky to get it into you're pocket,) and that the backlight isn't all that bright. But trust me here: It is much better to have an oversived system than an undersized one. (DS and SP)Keep in mind though, A Nintendo DS lite will be releasing in North America this month and is supposed to fix the original Ds's problems. It will be 20% lighter, 2/3 the size, has a backlight four times as bright as the original, comes with a longer stylus, and will cost $129.99 at launch. I can't exactly judge a system that is not out yet, but I'm sure it will have its own problems. (It looks a bit fragile.)Then the Playstation Portable came. It offered the ability to browse the internet, play games, listen to mp3s, watch UMD movies and look at pictures. It sounds great, but to use all this multimedia stuff you have to buy super expensive memory sticks, the games look like jagged PS2 graphics, and UMD movies only work on the PSP. They have minimal features, and they cost more than DVDs. The PSP feels strange in your hand because of it's long screen. Although, I have to admit, this is the only portable with a port of Katamari Damacy. The games cost $40 and $50 and the system costs $250.So what system is the best? You must decide. I've given you the facts, now you make your move on the chess board of the Portable Console war.

Alright...well I purchased this gameboy with the intent of taking it to my daycare and playing it with the other kids who have gameboys. I work at a daycare with kids ages 5-10. I trust the Nintendo brand name as it has been a household name for as long as I can remember.Durability: I am a klutz and so are my kids! I drop this thing all the time and it has never suffered anything except scratches to the exterior (the pearlized paint I've noticed seems to show wear more readily than the opaque paint).Reliability: I am amazed at how little I have to charge my gameboy. I can play for hours and it never dies! I trust the battery in this thing more than my digital camera or my cell phone.Ease of Use: There are so few buttons required to run this. There is an on/off switch on one side, a volume control on the other. There are two jacks in the back and other than that, all other buttons are for gameplay. Anyone who is familiar with Nintendo will find the buttons are in easy positions. The only buttons I find slightly awkward are the buttons on the top corners. However...I am an adult and my hands are bigger than kids' and the kids tell me they have no problems with them.Visibility: Well, the exterior is awesome! I love LOVE pink and I love this shade. Any little girl will love it. (I think it's a much better color than the DS Lite pink...not as pretty). As far as interior goes, the screen is awesome. This is a newer version the Gameboy Advance SP and it has a VERY bright screen. I find it easy to see in almost all light (in very bright, direct sunlight it is a little difficult to see).Sound: This gameboy has great sound. It's very clear and very loud! (parents be warned! heh) I've heard a lot of different games and the tone is great. It's awesome for kids and training their ears for sound differentation.I recommend this for all kids! I think the Advance SP is a better investment than the DS. It's smaller, it's cheaper, and the games are almost all identical. Any game you can get for one, I've noticed you can buy the same or similar for the other. Plus, if your kid shows responsibility and is just dying for a DS, all the Advance SP games are compatible with with DS, so no money wasted!

My goddaughter only wanted one present for her birthday, a GameBoy Advance SP system. There was a clique of kids at school who owned them, and they would share the games only among themselves. Other kids without a GBA were basically made to feel inferior, and were completely excluded. I hate this kind of behavior, and set about to rectify the situation.First, I ordered her a pink Game Boy Advance, this would put her in the small minority and give her much needed status among the kids who had treated her so badly, especially since most of them had only the gray GBA's.Next step was to have it laser engraved with her name and dad's cell phone number - this was big, in case she lost it she would always be able to identify it if some other kid had it and claimed it was their's, and if someone else found it they'd most likely call, especially a parent who sees their kid with another kid's expensive toy.Tip - make sure you get the laser engraving - it was only $20 and won't damage the machine, which a pressure engraving would do. Well worth it.Outcome - she loves her Game Boy and takes it everywhere, and her parents have bought her some extra games that are fairly reasonable in price. The other kids at school all want to use her system, especially the girls, and wish they had their name on the outside of their system.Best of all, she shares it with kids who don't have a Game Boy of their own (she's a sweetheart!)Score one for the underdog! I owned a Gameboy Advance SP for 5 years and have never experienced any problems with it. Very classic, but new at the same time. The only thing is that you have to have a game inserted, otherwise, it won't work. It even has a backlight, which I don't know why Nintendo didn't do this with the earlier Gameboys, but, is very handy. Loved it!

This is such a great product. Graphite = Black and these new models of GameBoy Advance SP are far more superior to other models, expect the new pink and new bright blue models. If you have any other color of SP get one of these new ones because they have a WAY better screen, much more brighter. I use to have a silver and dark blue SP. This new black SP's screen on the low setting is still brighter then the highest setting on the older model of SP's. Yes there are only 3 colors available but oh well. The price cannot be beat here at Amazon cause of the no tax and free shipping making it even cheaper than buying one at the store whose price is same but add tax and time to travel and the savings add up. Also as of this posting date it has been a few months that I have seen this graphite model in stores and I ran the gauntlet of them and no one has them in stock cause "they have stopped making them" yet I can find them here for brand new on the best place to buy electronics.

Not sure if I was a victim of some online "phishing" or what, but I did not order this item, and have not heard back from the seller in regards to it.Also, the item was not PEARL blue like the picture indicates. It is a dark blue.
