i had the same problem with Motu's Ultralite MK3, that the other Reviewer had with MOTU'S MicroBook II. i had the Ultralite for a while (but kept it thinking i would resolve the issue). but getting sound in the headphones was like a rocket science project. they have a weird way of routing their "Main Outputs". i found the so-called resolution on page 30 - under "Phones Assign" in their Manual. but it did not help. & i loved the feel of that Ultralite.. it looks like a monster that could blow anything out the box, & its Firewire.. so its fast. & their drivers have a reputation as being the best. but after emailing Motu, & going on forums & having it confirmed that i'm not the only one with that problem, i gave up.i was trying to upgrade my M-Audio MobilePre, which did not give me the problems the Motu gave me. Finally, i took the Motu Ultralite back to Guitar Center(& had to sell it back to then for WAY LESS money), & after investigating the Motu Microbook II - because it is very small & i wanted something portable (i even downloaded the Manual to see how to operate it, & saw a simular equation).. so i said "Nah".. & instead bought Komplete's Audio 6. & i have not had ONE problem, not ONE. after i installed the drivers, & selected the audio interface in my DAW's software.. Ka-Pow.!!! SOUND.. Lovely Sound. i paid slightly over $600 for the Ultralite MK3 & was a proud owner, until it proved to be very difficult to operate. & thats the truth .. i'm still curious about the MicroBook II, but i need to see more positive feedback.. & not just hype from the manufactureUPDATE ---------------------------------------------------------I'm updating my initially review to include a response that i just wrote to a comment (on my review).God bless you P. Frary. maybe your Mac friendly assertion has some validity (regarding YOUR experience with MOTU's Microbook). i've gotten a lot of feedback on comments from my initial review & didn't feel the need to post an update (but since you chimed in i thought i would elaborate a little).. i have moved on from the MOTU. But i did have the experiences that i expressed in my review (& i had did extensive research in many forums & found that many others were trying to solve the same issues that i had with MOTU's interfaces). My first comment mainly revolved around my experience with the MOTU Ultralite (which i had for servaral years). but as i mention in that Review which i posted in August 2012, i was highly curious about the MOTU Microbook, so i wound up going to Sam Ashe & purchasing one.. I brought it home really wanting that beautiful machine to produce results for me. it was small & portable & i just wanted it to do its thing for me. but i got the same issues that i expressed with getting the ins & outs to route correctly. & i did exactly what the manual said to do, I also emailed MOTU for help. But problems were not resolved (not in a way that gave consistent results). So this time, i brought the Microbook BACK to Sam Ashe & got a refund (I learned from keeping the previous purchase of the MOTU Ultralite more then 14 days & not being able to take it back). i eventually wound up getting Komplete's Audio 6, which is a little bigger & bulkier. but is a Monster. once you download their drivers, you are solid, NO PROBLEMO. The sound is SWEET. & the Routing issues simply don't exist - you just choose their driver in your DAW's software & you're good to go.i Recently also picked up another device that was meant to be a portable Microphone solution (in addition to my Audio-Technica AT4040 XLR Microphone, that i've had forever), but it comes with a audio interface built in it, that is excellent for travel use. that is the Samson's USB "Go Mic". it's a tiny little powerful Mic/interface that is also very user friendly where routing is concerned (there is a slight learning curve because it is a USB Mic - & you need to learn how to get your software to recognize it properly), but once you download ASIO4ALL & use those drivers.. its a smooth process). so like i said.. i've moved on from the MOTU Microbook.. DON'T NEED IT. & BTW, i have a Apple Mac Mini (8GB of RAM 2.5 Processor - with Turbo boost to 3GB, running on Mountain Lion OSX), & for my Portable needs I have a late 2006 Black Macbook (with 2.0 intel Duo 2 processor, 4GB of Crucial RAM & a Samsung 830 SSD drive, that makes that old Mac FLY) both of my Macs work sweetly with the Interfaces that I mentioned. i'm very adept at both Mac & Windows (XP & 7). Take care.P.S. - i know there is a way to get MOTU's Routing issue resolved, but from my experience with all the other Interfaces I've used & tested - with the MOTU, its like you're doing a science project to get it going, & even after you set it up, its not consistent. It adds aggravation in a situation where you just want to be creative.

I bought this to use as an output for DJing using ableton live. I've only used it twice at this point, but it's worked flawlessly and sounded fantastic connected to my macbook pro. The box is a little larger than I had imagined, but it's not too heavy despite the metal enclosure. I've spent a little time setting up the included software; it's not as complicated as everyone says, but certainly not plug-and-play. The outputs can get very loud while maintaining a clean signal, and the headphone jack is loud enough to blow my ears out, so it's fine for club use. I haven't tested any of the inputs yet, and I'll try to update this review after I've played with it a little.

I suppose the conversion is pretty good. I don't have a lot of experience with home recording. HOWEVER, if you plan to use Garageband, be warned that the phone output on the device will not work. Apple and MOTU don't speak to one another all that well. I also wish MOTU had sprung for a little more in the design and given you separate pots just for output and input. I.e. pots with numbers to tell you how much I/O you have dialed in.

The drivers for the usb 3.0 ports do not work. Besides that it is a good piece of hardware, I hope the manufacturer fixes this problem.

I may have a bum unit as I could not get a mix of the audio inputs, Garage Band and other computer audio to feed to the various outputs and headphones at the same time (I am an experienced sound designer) When I was able to get audio to pass the quality seemed great and the Cue Mix FX offers a lot of flexibility...but be forewarned it is not easy. It's small, seems well built but I could not get it to function correctly which is a bummer.

The Audio Express is solid and sturdy, and comes with adapters so you can mount it on a rack shelf. I'm still learning how to configure it; my first session with the AE took a very long time, the next one went more quickly. The USB/FireWire interface works well, and the unit will power itself off bus power while on FW, but needs the included audio adapter when using USB.The front panel is difficult to figure out, and am only now starting to get used to it after using it for a few weeks; a lot of functions are accessed by pressing the pots in to cycle through different modes.A nice touch is the locking connectors for the combo XLR sockets; no more pulling a mic out accidentally, at least not out of the Audio Express. (This'll put my mind at ease a bit when using phantom power.)Recommended tentatively, since I'm still leraning the unit; I'm also undecided on whether I should have spent the extra money on the MOTU Ultralite or the MOTU 828mk3 Hybrid Firewire Audio Interface, although the Audio Express's small size makes it far more portable. However, coming from an M-Audio FireWire 410 4-In / 10-Out FireWire Mobile Recording Interface, this unit is a vast improvement.

The audio interface works pretty good, but the driver is not 100% compatible with OS X 10.7 (lion). If for some reason I have to re-start the computer, it does a panic re-start. Until they fix this problem the only solution is to disconnect the unit, re-start the computer and connect the unit again.

I went from the M-box bought with an early version of Protools to the Motu traveler-Mk3. The difference in sound is mind blasting. Everything is much clearer. I have a pair of dynaudio passive monitor speakers and a NAD amplifier -all excellent quality. Having a good interface really changes the sound quality. The CueMix software is good and easy to manage. The idea of a stand alone product is good and its really light, but the buttons are a bit fidgety to manage, it's better to program CueMix in advance. If you want a top end interface try metric halo. I thought that buying the Motu traveler-Mk3 was a good intermediate. I also have a apogee ONE interface that I just carry around with my laptop, but the sound quality is no way near the Motu. For me the Mk3 is missing a second headphone channel like the MOTU 828mk3 Hybrid Interface, but I wanted a extra set of XLR entries. BTW there is a midi in and out.

I really recomend it..... the only thing is.... if you are expecting to have 3 analog stereo inputs you will be disappointed since one of the ins and one of the outs is spdif digitalIt doesn't have 6x6 Analog in/outs but ONLY 4 ANALOG INPUTS AND 4 ANALOG OUTPUTSthe service of amazon, delivery time, packaging, etc was EXCELLENT

The Traveler MK3 packs a lot of technology in a small, very portable package and is very impressive out of the box. I've owned and used this little guy as my primary mixer both in home and at gigs for about eight months now. I feel it can be a bit difficult to learn and use if you're not familiar with processing audio. Because the front panel necessarily has few and tiny knobs, making for some complex navigation and limited access to settings, I haven't yet had the courage to gig without my Macbook Pro tethered to it so that I have easier access through the CueMix GUI. However, I've come to realize that it's biggest short coming, for a gigging musician in particular, is the inability to use a MIDI controller with the Traveler MK3. There is a hard-to-find and pricey pro-line Mackie controller that is their only external control option. But in my opinion this was and odd decision on MOTU's part, not to have integrated MIDI control capability. I would have given 5 stars but for this very important and missing capability.
