My Second Surface Phone
I didn't take care of my first Surface Phone. It's a little beat up, but it still works fine. I didn't want to give up the phone completely, so I bought a second one for less than half the price. And it was delivered in 2 days.

Amazing Hardware for around $300
I got the Duo to replace my S7 and happy I did. I love the multitasking experience possible on this device. Everything is an upgrade for me, battery life, screens, and camera. It took me some time and patience to get all the touch gestures down, but once I did, everything flows smoothly. you can make and receive calls on the Duo, but it's not a cell phone. It's something else, something better.

Screen failure after three weeks
It was amazing while it lasted - the hardware is beautiful to hold, and the form factor is amazing for productivity and reading ebooks/comics. Only real annoyance while it was still working was the "gap" in the display to align with the real gap between the screens - really strange software decision there.
However in my third week of ownership it started making vertical purple lines on the left screen - a common sign of hardware failure in the lcd screen. This was intended to be my around-the-house tablet, so it has never been taken outdoors and it has never been put in a pocket.
Ended up having to return it to Amazon for a full refund.

Everything fine and working as expected
Phone was in new condition, fully unlocked. Model is USQ00001. It needed a small charge for the first boot. During the setup Duo rebooted several times to install all of the updates (about 2.5gb). After that it works quite smoothly for me.
My Armenian Ucom sim card is working good, and there is an option to use esim which I will try. (Update: esim is working, device is dual sim - single standby)
In general, I am very impressed by the hardware and satisfied with software. I'm sure that future updates to 12L will make it even better. Greatest value for money.

software not perfect
Great device. I would not pay full retail for this yet. The discounting of the older model provided the chance for me to experience this phone firsthand finally. It's not perfect, but it is a great multitasking device and a form factor I hope Microsoft doesn't give up on. The hardware is almost perfect. I think the software is where the device is left behind. There are times when the touch screen isn't as responsive as it should be. It doesn't appear to be a lack of horsepower because I have run very processor-intensive apps on both screens simultaneously with no issues. I carry two phones most days, and this fits a nice niche for me. I have always wanted a tablet with phone abilities. Most of us rarely take calls, and texting and email are how most of us communicate. This is perfect for that!

Amazing different device, need time to adopt it's formfactor..
For 1400 USD o would not buy it, but for 320 USD it is reasonable deal

Great phone, really good at most things, strange trade offs though
The phone is fast and responsive, the dual screens are GREAT for me, as this has become my primary device I can be looking at restaurants and have text messaging open to talk to the wife, and other multi tasking. The touch is responsive but even with sensitivity on the lowest, the back gesture always activates no matter where your finger is even if it's just a tap. Rotating the screen gives a dedicated keyboard which is nice. The swipe keyboard is terrible at word prediction. The camera is garbage quality, it takes to long to snap after tapping the shutter button. Also, trying to take pictures through the messaging app to share can leave you stuck in the camera unable to return to the messaging. Odd things are a lack of integration with other Android devices or Chrome books, and Microsoft apps aren't compatible like Word.
BIGGEST ISSUE the right screen on my phone flashed green and now I have dark bars on my screen at low brightness. At high brightness the screen has a green hue on the left side. Service is also strange, phone will say it has LTE service but will refuse to do anything. Also NFC would be nice.
BIGGEST POSITIVES good battery life, lasts me about a day and a half between charges. It's fast, for fun emulate with retroarch and rotate the phone, it gives you a dedicated controller on the lower screen and emulates N64 beautifully. If you want a phone where you can carry on a text convo and watch you tube, Netflix or tik tok at the same time, this does so perfectly.

Excellent multi-tasking device
The Duo has to be one of my favorite phones I've owned. The 3 star rating is for durability. It's so fragile. Once the glass backing cracks, there's no stopping it. Seem like Microsoft wants to drag their feet with repairs if not bought directly from them.

Will not activate in android 12 on Google fi, tried esim and sim. Just gives unhelpful errors or deselect the sim activation with no notice or function.

Best phone I ever used bar none. Even if the camera isn't the best... the pluses blow the negatives out of the water.
The absolutely stunning dual screens, the square form factor of each screen, the world class dual app support, the fact that it's both a tablet and a phone, the multiple modes - tent, laptop, bar, the xbox gaming app that let's you use the second screen as a control pad for streaming or playing console games, the choice of phone or split tablet screen format for Disney pus, YouTube, Netflix, etc.
So many other things no time to mention here. Everybody that sees it is wowed or asks questions. For example a month or two ago I had a bunch of enthusiastic strangers behind me in a stadium asking me questions about the phone over the crowd noise.
Sad to say as a long time Samsung fan, except for the camera this phone is much better than the Z Fold 3, which I bought around the same time as this Surface Duo 1 and eventually returned.

Not for avg use
Microsoft duo is best described as a tool. A tool with multifunctional use to get things done. You could use it as you would a single screen smartphone but it's proper use would be managing, viewing, and communicating every moment you open it. Unfortunately while there has been major improvements since its debut, the software is still a bit buggy. Its not every time but it can be quite annoying when it does happen. The battery life I think is a little above avg and the speakers, with a help of an app is decent. Overall the hardware is quite nice but fragile near the charging port. PIn my opinion, this 1st Gen is best used as a secondary vs a primary. A great device for a niche crowd

Most useful phone I've ever had
I switched from a galaxy s22 ultra and I'm so glad I did. Took me an hour to get used to the gesture controls but once I did it was a game changer. I've been using the Samsung note series since the note 8 and have had the top of the line Samsung the whole time since and I won't be going back. Snappy phone, clean ui, and glorious multitasking potential. Love being able to have up a calendar or spreadsheet up while I'm writing emails or making a call. SwiftKey is the stock keyboard and also my favorite since 2016. Great phone, best value for 400.

Great idea bad execution
I really wanted to love this phone, as I originally wanted to buy it when it was first release. But I thought it was too expensive at $1,400, so when the price dropped to $1000 I bought it immediately. After using it for just two days, I quickly realized this was product is just doesn't have the specs to handle its features.
Pros.
1) great design
2) well thought out software for productivity
3) great pen support
4) great screen ratio for content consumption
Cons.
1) battery life, with moderate use, it was dying by 1pm
2) Processor/ram. at times reading an article/browsing the web on one screen while as a video is play on the other will create horrible lag. Seems like the most basic use case for this product.
3) wifi is far worse then my old One Plus 7 pro
4) very few car mount would make any sense at all
5) Price
6) software is still very glitchy in many cases, screen orientation, typing etc. i'm not sure if this is the software or the hardware not being able to keep up.
Even though I thought $1000 is a good price for such a product, but not this product. maybe if it had Samsung S line specs, but as it is now it is only worth about $400 as a tablet that you use on the couch as you watch tv.

Great Secondary Carry Device
I have an iPhone 13 mini and dislike carrying around my iPad for when I want a bigger screen. This thing is perfect for me. I was at my daughters hockey practice and was watching a movie on one screen while browsing the news on the other. It tethers to my iPhone hotspot via bluetooth when I am not near WiFi. Best part is that it folds up and I can put it in my pocket. Oh, and it has Android 11. The software experience is very good and I believe this will be upgrades to 12L later this year.

Great potential, poor execution
I was really looking forward to this purchase. The two screens increases productivity and enjoyment of any display device. I have three monitors on my home computer and I also recommend it to all of my customers.
The execution of this build though it lacking in so many rudimentary ways. In the 10 days that I used it I had the so many frustrating interactions with it.
1. Right side touch screen became unresponsive.
2. Right side screen would flash brightly
3. Right side screen would get a green or red haze over it
I did a reset of the device and:
4. Bar at the bottom of the screen that allows you to move an app between screens stopped working. I am sure it would just be a matter of time before issues 1,2 and 3 show up.
I have had IPhone products 10 years; never had any of these issues. 10 days Duo fails. 10 years, IPhone’s still going strong.
I am an IT guy guy with 30 years experience dealing with technology. After 10 days of using this half-baked tech, I think Microft should recall every one of the first-gen Duo’s and swap them for the Duo 2’s. That is, if they fixed these issues.

As good as expected.
I do believe there are tons of reviews recently due to new discounts. Regarding my personal experience, most things are fine, the style is novel, the reading experience is second to none, the amazing hinge gives a satisfying and solid feeling.
However, one thing I want to complain about is the connectivity: there are no NFC and wireless charging functions. Extremely weak Bluetooth strength makes earphones frequently disconnect, while the built-in speaker is not outstanding nor stereo (though there are two speakers equipped, the right one is only used for calls, maybe future tweaks by XDA devs can solve this, but I am not very optimistic about it).
I also hope for better multitasking support software-wise, including better drag-and-drop between arbitrary apps, to further strengthen the advantages of this device and mimic a desktop-level multi-screen experience.
Overall, at a price of 600 USD (mine is factory unlocked), I do appreciate what I've got, a solid gen 1 device that is different from 1 million phones out there.
