Recomendado 100%.
Media Consumption: wonderful, the OLED panel on this thing has inky blacks, vibrant colours, and crisp visuals. Watching shows, YouTube, and such is great and the speaker isn’t tinny for a phone. Definitely a pleasure for media consumption. I also use this as an e-reader which tbh I’ve never felt comfortable with in the past. Something about single page displays never worked well in my mind, but holding this like a book works perfectly. Manga in particular is great to read as the blacks are deep and the contrast is clean. I read through the entirety of Dragonball Super in about a month using this exclusively.
Multitasking/Productivity: Wow, this is where things take a big shift. I’ve used iPads and other tablets over the years heavily. Whether doing creative content creation, DMing, writing, content viewing etc, this is hands down the best portable multitasking device. The separate displays lend themselves to such easy and functional multitasking that it’s honestly a wonder to me why more companies haven’t leaned into this. I never want to be without a device like this moving forward.
Example: Have you ever been watching a video on your phone and thought about looking up what is being talked about? If you have YouTube premium for example, sure the audio continues to play when you exit, but the video itself is gone. On another android device maybe it shrinks to a window, or on a tablet a split view occurs, but on here you just use the other screen, there isn’t a compromise. It’s hard to explain but it’s something that once you use it, it makes so much sense and you’ll notice when you don’t have it.
Overall fantastic, especially at this lower price point. I would be tempted in the future to make it my single device but for now in pair with my iPhone is great. I have run into a single issue, which sometimes it think I have it folded back to select a display, which is annoying but usually it stops if I close the device, wait a few seconds, and open again. There was one instance where I had to power cycle to fix it. Other than that, battery life, functionality and enjoyment have been superb.
For reference, I have the following devices
IPhone 12 mini
Samsung Fold 3
Samsung Flip 4
Sony Xperia Pro I
Google Pixel 6A
The Build Quality is exceptional and functionality of using dual screen for multitasking is out of the world- Two screens function independently & smoothly , just unreal . In shorts
Pro
1) Top Quality make
2) Top performance ( Don't fall in for reviews of last year- New updates have removed 95% of issues
faced during launch -New Android 11 working flawlessly )
3) Regular update & security patches
4) MS Office and other Microsoft Apps Sync with Windows
5) Bumper included for accidental fall
Cons
1) Right side gets little hot when constantly used
2) Battery is OK but not great
3) Price - You can get this almost at half the price on US Amazon ( 400 USD ) for 256GB .Paid 74K for 128
on Amazon India
4) Service & Warranty in India a big issue
5) Surface Pen2 overpriced
I really like having the two screens! It may not be the best for viewing movies, but it IS the best for productivity. More apps are set up to use the two screens and it is VERY convenient.
I wanted one when they first came out but the $1,400.00 price tag was just too much. Now that they are in the $300 range for a NEW one that made all the difference.
A few other thoughts:
- The hardware is an amazing design, with an outstanding 360 degree hinge. It certainly feels premium, and it's barely thicker than my Samsung Galaxy S20.
- The dual-screen form factor is really useful. It's great to be able to pull up my personal and work calendars side-by-side for example, or look at Google Maps on one screen and a browser on the other.
- The book "posture" is superb for using it as an e-reader with the Kindle or Readly apps, whilst in landscape mode tapping away on the bottom screen is effortless for writing texts or e-mails. This is where the dual rather than folding screen approach shines through.
- The wider screen, even in single screen mode, is more engaging than the thinner, longer screens of traditional candy-bar phones. Who knew?
- The USB-C port reportedly breaks very easily, and it certainly looks quite fragile. Indeed the whole device appears beautiful, but brittle. A metal chassis rather than one covered in Gorilla Glass might have been a better choice. I'll see how well it holds up over time.
- A number of features are missing that you would expect from a premium phone, so check out the specs carefully. Whilst the device is wonderfully thin and light, I feel those compromises might have gone too far. I can live without a 3.5mm jack, high-end camera(s), SD card slot, outside screen, 5G, two day battery, stereo speakers etc., but wireless charging is a big miss in 2021, especially for a device that has a delicate charging port and a relatively small battery.
- The hinge makes viewing movies across both screens unworkable, but folding screen phones aren't much better because of their squarish ratio doesn't leave much screen space for actual content. A cheap 16:9 ratio tablet is still a better media consumption device. That said, viewing a movie in the tent posture is about the same experience as a typical 6"+ candy bar phone.
- The version of Microsoft Launcher is NOT the same as that for other Android devices, I'd like to add more buttons to the taskbar, and change the grid settings, but that's not an option. If you don't like the Microsoft Launcher, good luck finding another one that recognizes the Duo's unique screen layout.
- Cost: its launch price of $1,500 is just too much for a device like this, especially as I don’t think a dual screen should command the same premium that a folding screen can.
- Ergonomics wise, it comfortably fits in a pocket, which I was doubtful about before it arrived. However, using it as phone without a headset or earbuds is faintly ridiculous.
In the end, the bargain basement prices right now provide a great opportunity to try out the format. There’s a trade off between screen real estate and the size / weight of a phone. In the past, I’ve found a bigger phone to be just that – the same functionality, just bigger. The dual-screen format actually offers more. Sure, it’s a first gen edition but the bugs seem to have been largely ironed out.
I bought this "phone" recently and I must say I am very pleased up to 2 features that need improvement.
After unboxing I started right away to use it as my personal assistant where I have organized all my professional stuff like documents etc... plus my other stuff in social media, distance learning, music...
I am impressed how easy and convenient and practical to use it is. The form is great and the size too I put it in my shirt's pocket or in my trouser the risk of it falling out is the same as with any other phone.
Where I am absolutely not happy is the camera. I am wondering that Microsoft thought they could go away with that it is miserable. the next thing is the phone while on WhatsApp I can close the phone and talk to someone, however, it does not work for the phone once you start the call or receive it if you close the or fold together you are hanging up so you break the phone connection. That is not very cool well folding 360 so back works but at time I am talking to the back of the phone and wonder why the other end can't hear me.... matter of getting used to it.
Setting up this phone is so easy, network connection is among the quickest as well as Bluetooth connection. eSIM works great too everything to be honest at this point works great. I have the 128G so the smaller one and I live in Europe no issue at all. One Battery load has kept me working on documents while spotifying for from 89%-15% in more than 14h which I dont get with my Galaxy note 20. The only thing I find Galaxy does better is the really taking pictures and as long as Microsoft doesn't fix the camera issue I will keep the Galaxy for better photo and by the way calling sound quality is not better with Galaxy Note keeping the connection stable is also not so tremendous on galaxy note 20.
Last thing is the feeling of true. Surface duo gives you the feeling of True. You feel it you know it is there and it will be there with you for perhaps decades. It will not break. So that's the feeling I get and I have had experience with surface 3 pro for many years now. In the mean time everyone in my family has changed at least once their laptop or tablet. This is the same philosophy of sustainability I would say.
When you start using this device, you start to see the benefit of having two screens. Opening a link in an email that just opens on a second screen. Browsing Twitter on one screen and watching a video on the other. It is a true multitasking champ. It's only been a few days but the performance has been overall pretty smooth, with a few frame drops here and there but nothing that is a deal breaker.
I have been using this as a reading device to catch up on the news, manage my accounts, and so on. I will say that the camera is not good. It's perfectly fine as a webcam but that's about it, which makes this hard to recommend as your primary phone. And because of the aspect ratio, some social media apps like Instagram might present themselves as a little weird.
This phone is just so much fun to use and I am sure you will find ways to utilize its very unique form factor the more that you use it. The gap in the middle does make spanning both screens a little challenging depending on the app but I actually like reading articles using this method in portrait orientation. So the bottom line is if you are looking for a secondary device as a compact tablet or even if you are looking for a good phone at a great price and camera performance isn't important to you, this is a great buy!
