There are still those of us around for whom playing music through anything other than a bespoke music player doesn't sound quite right - particularly in the home - and notwithstanding how convenient downloads and streaming have now become. If you are such a person, then this may be the device for you...

BUILD QUALITY/DESIGN: The build quality of the M-CR610 is fine, but those old enough to remember the 1980s Marantz dark brown metal/heavy plastic devices may be slightly disappointed. This one's not quite up to the very high standard of those earlier units. This new design is great for sitting on a bookshelf but not so likely to withstand the wear and tear of being lugged around (not that you'd want to). Whilst it's not a deal-breaker, I'm not a massive fan of piano black finish either - too vulnerable to fingerprints and scratchmarks (I prefer matte black) but, tucked away in a corner (as mine is) - you don't really notice it. Speaking of dark corners: the buttons (black-on-black) can be difficult to see - it's a pity they're not backlit. The OLED display, though not colour, is very clear and has brightness settings or can be turned off completely if required. The remote control is of a fairly standard design/decent quality and will be required to access all of the Marantz's functions.

*UPDATE Feb 2015* - Since posting this review I experienced a problem with the remote not working - it became inactive without warning. Fortunately the problem was corrected by doing a factory reset (explained in the instructions). Not sure if this is going to be a recurring glitch (hope not) but I was glad the reset fixed it as I really didn't want to have to take it back.

SET-UP: OK for anyone who's use to setting up audio equipment and is computer-literate. Not hard, but not one for the "plug-and-play" generation either. Most people will suss it out...it took me about half an hour to work out what went in where and actually get a CD playing. The quick set-up manual is a waste of paper: given that the set-up isn't especially easy, I would imagine many people, me included, would want to get the full set-up out of the way. The quick start guide doesn't even tell you where to plug the radio antenna in. Full set up is described in the manual...which is on CD only, so - laptop at the ready before you get started.

USE

Post-set-up, less technical family members should, without too much training, be able to use the unit's basic features without too much trouble. The M-CR610 does a lot and will take some time to explore its additional functions. You would hope that a read of the instruction might help but sadly the full instructions, though not bad, are not in the same league as those I've used for Roberts products of similar specification (and it doesn't help that there's no paper copy - isn't paper supposed to be more environmentally friendly than CDs?).

SELECTED/MAIN FUNCTIONS:

There is a huge variety of functions on the Marantz M-CR610 and I suspect what you use will depend on what other Wi-Fi gadgets you have (an iPhone, for example, which I don't own):

1. Amp

There are aux inputs for 2 other devices (in my case BluRay player and turntable) - a third might have been nice. Also it lacks a 3.5mm stereo input jack which can be handy for connecting odd devices to - not fatal, but given the lack of Bluetooth this might have been a nice touch. Also the lack of an actual volume knob (the Marantz just has arrow buttons for volume control) I found a little disorientating at first.

2. CD Player

Easy to use if a little bit basic in operation - the design/functionality is essentially unchanged from the CD players of 30 years ago. Given this device's wi-fi capability, some sort of Gracenote (for example) track-identifier software might have been nice? After all the track titles show when you stream music, so why can't it recognise CD track titles?

3. Streaming Music

You can use the Marantz to find and play music stored on your PC or smartphone. Some devices, e.g. a Windows PC will also perform that function in reverse i.e. you can select a track or album on Windows Media Player and play it through the M-CR610 - it will even switch the M-CR610 on for you.

4. Internet Music

I've set this up with a pair of Q ACoustics 2020is and the sound is very, very impressive. Absolutely perfect balance of bass and treble. Volume is certainly more than adequate for my reasonable-sized lounge (let's face it, if you are a hifi fan and have a warehouse-sized front room, you probably want to be looking at spending more than 500 quid all in for your music system anyway), haven't even cranked up to halfway yet.
Setup to internet was very quick, and DAB and Internet radio stations a doddle to find. Within ten minutes of setup, I was listening to a Louisiana bluegrass station and a Mexican folk station, just for "lols".
I'll probably think about cabling from the router to the unit, but I've only had one small wifi drop in a whole weekend of streaming.
Talking of streaming, Spotify was equally easy to set up but (and here's the elephant in the room), you'll only really get the best from Spotify if you use the Marantz app, and the app is pretty weak. True, you can access playlists, search for artists and songs, adjust volume etc, but this all happens painfully slowly. When you search, the results just list songs, no artist, nor which version of a song it might be. I've lost count already of the number of times I've encountered a "karaoke" or "alternative artist" version of a song I've searched for. Added to that, the app crashes every half hour or so and takes an eternity to re-locate the Marantz device (five to ten minutes minimum). It appears as though the app was launched as a beta version and no real effort at refinement or improvement has taken place since: the app display even looks quaintly old fashioned.
So, the M-CR610 is a fine piece of kit, sounds amazing and easy to use. However, the app that you need to get the best from Spotify is a bit pants. We've tried it on Android, iPhone and iPad and it's the same on all of them.
Sadly, knocking one star off for this, but overall very pleased.

Think twice about ripping all of your CDs and taking them to the charity shop. This little beauty will have you falling in love with them all over again. It's the Wi-Fi features that really bring this box to life though. The killer feature for me is easily the Airplay compatible functions. Using Home sharing in iTunes on a machine attached to a media server and Apple's excellent Remote App (Forget about Home Sharing iTunes - Too unstable!) my gigantic collection of Mp3s can be played and controlled via an iPod Touch. With DAB Radio, direct USB compatibility (2 ports!), the ability to Bi-Wire speakers (I have Wharfedale Diamond 220s linked up) a generous amount of phone ins and outs and a direct digital port this box really does has the potential to become the only hi-fi unit you'll ever need. Then on top of that there's the most important part - the sound. Mp3s become dynamic again, even those ripped at lower bit rates and FLAC files are alive with detail. A great machine and one I have no hesitation in recommending.

The CR610 is a compact and streamlined piece of kit.
The unit is easy to setup.....it virtually does it itself once plugged in! However, the system then needs to be fine tuned.
Beware of the automatic "firmware" update.....read what other reviewers have said about this, as it can corrupt the system (Marantz accept no responsibility for this....view their website).The CR610 has an impressive reception and can pick up DAB radio (once the ariel is attached!) well. The other facility is to stream Internet radio from a WI-FI connection to your router.....brilliant.
Another point to beware of is that when you stream your music from your PC, the CR610 will pick up all sources e.g Windows Media, ITunes Library and Amazon Player etc. so this makes life difficult! Another point to note it will not (as far as I am aware stream "Purchased" music from ITunes...a real pain. You can play from your PC via AirPlay but this is not the same as pulling the information from the music server (the PC).

UPDATE: 16/12/15
The user interface on this product is absolutely "pants". When streaming music from your server, the CR610 picks everything up by track, name/artist. It will not sort the information into "Album" ......crazy!!

This is my second one of these first one purchased from UK Digital and was a complete wash out this one perfect sound on the radio and CD's sound great even up graded the speaker system to make it sound even better, the company have been very helpful with any problems so yes 10 out of 10 all round

This is an entry-level HiFi system, but make no mistake: it sounds very good if paired with decent speakers (mine are a pair of Boston's A25, which are fine, but I'm sure this unit could easily drive better speakers). I bought this receiver mainly due to space constrains in my rack and for the practicality of having a single unit to play all my digital music in whatever form I chose. Before buying it I was in doubt about the sound quality (never heard it) and was seriously considering buying a Marantz PM 6005 integrated amp, but all doubts vanished after listening to the M-CR610 in my house: it sounds incredibly good for an all-in-one, with a warm and musical sound, precise but not over-analytical.

The unit is well built and well finished, but I agree with other reviewers in that it deserved an all-metal body, as it would add a more premium look and feel to the product, not to mention that it would be more befitting of the price tag... Setup was very easy. Upon powering for the first time, it found my WiFi network and shortly after asked to upgrade the firmware. Then it was all a matter of connecting the speakers and let it play. This unit truly excels as a network player; it plays very well in a variety of formats and there's no fuss changing the sources - never need to press more than two buttons. Actually, you can use it sole as a network/cd/radio player, connecting to a higher quality amp through the pre-outs (I don't plan to use the pre-outs as I'm really satisfied with the unit's amp, but it is always nice to have a growth option).

Now, if you buy this unit or plan to hear it, do yourself a favor: play some nice (i.e. well mastered) hi-res files trough it. Hi-res music is noticeably better (crispier, fuller and with far more detail) than regular CD to my ears and definitely won my heart for this unit, as I never imagined that such a modest system could deliver so good a sound when playing high quality source-files.

In my view the only downsides are the already mentioned plastic body (albeit a good quality plastic) and the relative scarcity of digital inputs (just one and I'd like to see at least one more). On balance, thought, these are minor flaws, especially considering that one buys such units for music playing and the Marantz plays very well, I dare say with a sound quality markedly above it's price tag.

This product does everything I want but I find it difficult to read the screen and fiddly to program using the supplied remote, particularly when using Spotify. I find it a bit better when using my Android smartphone and a lot better when using my wife's Ipad, which is not always available.

I don't usually write reviews but this piece of kit is something special and worth shouting about. Sound is really superb fills the room with incredible sound. Easy set up, links to Spotify and other services, and airplay is a great addition to stream from your iPad or iPhone. Spotify login and search are quite cumbersome using the remote so I tend to use AirPlay. Over all brilliant.
