good buy for makita owners
this tool works great for clearing small trees up to about 14” bay trees i could fall about six on a charge the only thing is it doesn’t like running continually it draws too much power out of the batteries and the overheat protection kicks in. Tool overheats easy my only complaint however if you clear as u cut and let the tool turn off and on instead of keeping it live it will last up to two hours of work opposed to maybe 15 min of continuous use under load....also if you overload it with RPM too low it will stop completely and blink which draws a ton of power i didn’t know this at first and thought i burnt out my new batteries!! 4 x 5ah battery setup is a must, but if you push this tool too hard it quits on you ...discouraging ..but that’s the technology protecting your investment read all instructions and no more gas going bad or yanking to start, low noise thing rocks!! 4.5 stars if i could

Most economical way I found to buy batteries.
I really only needed batteries for my other Makita tools. These batteries came with a free chainsaw. Don't have a burning need for this saw but its a cool tool. Seems to work well, but I have only made a handful of cuts on some small 2-6" tree branches. One complaint: I have many, many, Makita tools that came with a, usually bulky, plastic case. Most of the time I don't need the case and it ends up stored in my garage indefinitely. This is one tool where a case would be really nice so I could just put the saw on my truck or in a toolbox and have the whole thing protected from weather and general abuse.

Motor died within the first 20 minutes
Either I am the one in a thousand that just received a defective lemon dual battery powered Makita XCU03PT chain saw, or I overstressed this motor on too large of a 26 inch diameter tree trunk, using this Makita that comes with, if I remember correctly, a 14 or 16 inch chainsaw bar. I really wanted to try my brand new Makita just to see if it could handle this large of a tree, but ended up finishing the job with my gas powered Stihl chain saw (which has about twice the power) when this Makita motor died within 20 minutes (yes I then tried two pairs of new fully charged batteries with no success). Because I was within the 30 day return policy, I was able to return to Amazon. This is the first Makita power tool I have ever had to return. Lesson learned, only use this saw with trees with less than 14 inches in diameter, which might be fine for most homeowners that cut down an occasional tree. Larger than 14 inch diameter trees should be left for a professional anyway.

Ready to Cut
I've been doing my own tree trimming on my acre and a half property using hand tools and a Makita cordless reciprocating saw.....thought it was time to move up to the chainsaw so I got the 14" 36v Makita (XCU03Z)....put on the bar and chain and I'm ready to cut......giving it 5 stars in advance (haven't cut yet) given my other 15 Makita tools with the LXT platform have performed that well.....will post another review if it doesn't perform.....but don't hold your breath.

Really like this saw
Cleaned the deadwood out of several old apple trees, 8 to 10 inch limbs, and cut it up for firewood. Saw performed very well. Auto stops if you over tax it but cuts long, fast and smooth with proper pressure. Good battery life and the second set was re-charged before I needed it. The main power button that some dislike was a non-issue for me; the saw stays live for one minute after you stop cutting, so I seldom reached the point of auto shut off and it was easy enough to push the button when I did. I had my gas Husky with me, thinking I might need it but it stayed on the wagon. For me, this Makita is maybe 90% of the Husky, much easier to grab and use, and likely to be my first option for most all of my cutting. Build quality is typical Makita (good). Tool-less chain adjustment works well. Oiler works well. OEM Oregon chain is nice and sharp.

Impressive cutting, long battery life, easy maintenance.
My Husqy and and my Stihl are going to miss me. This is my new saw.
This saw cuts super well. Very impressed with it. I've had it for three months and have taken down dozens of trees from saplings through trees about as think as the 14" blade. It has performed excellently. I've down a bunch of trail clearing with it too. Great saw.
It opens very easily for cleaning - no tool needed. The chain tightening mechanism is beautifully simple. Very easy to maintain.
The battery life is above expectations. Again, very impressive. Dozens of six to twelve inch cuts without needing to swap batteries. And then, swapping batteries is easier and faster than filling with gas. And the battery charger does its work quickly too. Highly recommend this tool.

A Pleasure To Use, A Valuable Tool
I found the Makita 14" battery powered chainsaw fun to use and much less hassle than any of the 3 gasoline powered saws I've owned over the years, and they were all well respected brands.
I dropped a 12" maple with a lot of top growth. I easily took care of the top and cut up the trunk and large branches into stove-length logs, all in about an hour. The saw handles like a dream in the brush and I never encountered the problem with the saw turning off that was described by some of the other buyers.
I do have a major gripe however. The directions for assembling the bar and chain to the saw are absolutely horrible. This assembly process is quite different from the process one would use to put a bar and chain on a typical gas powered saw, so clear instructions are important. First, the print in the manual is tiny. You need excellent light to read it, and then it's still a challenge. Second, the instructions for the assembly process are ungrammatical and unclear, bordering on incomprehensible. I would think a large company like Makita that sells a lot of products in the U.S. could afford to hire an English speaking technical writer to do a respectable job in creating a good user manual. This manual is a disgrace.
The diagrams too are misleading and unclear. Numbers are used to link illustrations of parts to their names; then in the same paragraphs, the steps in the directions are numbered. The reader is immediately confused about the meaning of the numbers. It took me longer to put the bar and chain on the saw than it did to fell and cut up that maple.

I never thought I would respect cordless chainsaw as a serious tool. This is a winner. I own several chainsaws, ranging from a small Echo arborist's saw up to an MS462 for felling. I think this saw just replaced my other small saws. There's just not much advantage to a gas saw over this one, within its size class. This is just as fast and maneuverable as a small professional gas saw for limbing, small-diameter bucking, and felling small tress. The instant torque response of the brushless motor is better than an engine, and it's quiet and ergonomic. The battery life is totally acceptable - you'll be ready for a break before it's time to switch batteries. With moderate use, you can rotate four batteries through the dual charger and keep up with the saw (no waiting to charge). With heavy use, you need a pair of dual chargers and 6 or 8 packs to keep up with the saw. If you already use Makita LXT tools (which I do, and highly recommend) then you'll have no problem with batteries. This saw is totally on par with the other LXT tools and I love it.

Good chainsaw, needs close power source
The chainsaw equipped with its batteries is really in the featherweight category. The handling is unmatched, with perfectly designed handles and a whopping 12-pound weight, that is unsurpassed by gasoline equivalents. The chain is a bit narrow and tends to wear fast; replacements are hard to find in generic hardware stores, so keeping a sharpening file handy is recommended. As for the trigger-button safety locks, you get used to it after one or two sessions.
Battery life is limited. I use this saw deepwoods, tens of miles away from the nearest power source. Even with 8 batteries, I can't saw for hours ― how I miss gasoline saws in these moments. I recommend using this saw close to a power source, with 2 batteries on the charger while 2 on the apparatus.
All in all, this makes an excellent saw to use around the house (or a generator). Just the four 5.0 Ah packs and the fast charger worth the investment.

Better than I hoped, and I had high expectations based on my other makita tools.
Since purchasing this saw about a week ago I have cut over 150 cedar trees of various sizes, and a few others including oak and hickory. So I have put this saw to work, hard long days, with short breaks while I ate and drank, I have gone through 2 chains mostly from hitting fence, some of which had grown into the trees. This saw has taken it all like a champ. I have run big logging saws, topping saws, and other small saws similar to this one before, so now that you know my background and how I have tested this thing, here is my review.
Overall this saw is one of the best that I have ever used. Not because it has an overwhelming amount of power, but simply because of everything that comes with it being an electric battery powered chainsaw. To keep this short and sweet, I'll make a pro's list and explain the only con.
Pro's-
The biggest pro is that you hit the button, pull the trigger and it goes, NO more cranking an engine, or cold starts, no gas, no fuss, it just goes.
It's quiet, you don't need earplugs or anything, you can't talk over it, but you can yell over it.
Good battery life, can cut a little over an hour per charge per pair of 5AH batteries
Batteries charge fast with dual charger, about 45 minutes for the 5AH batteries and it works with all other makita 18v batteries
Plenty of power for what it is, You can cut down trees bigger than the bar with a bit of finesse
Uses surprisingly little bar oil
Easy to make adjustments, and no tools needed other than a file for sharpening the chain
weighs slightly less than comparable gas chainsaws
The only con
The tool-less adjustment is a bit finicky sometimes, especially with a new chain. It's not quite as precise as a traditional chainsaw setup, but once you get it all running right any further adjustments only take a few seconds, so the time taken probably evens out, and the fact that you don't need any tools to do the adjustment is quite nice.
If you need a chainsaw and have Makita tools already, get this one. If you want a saw that doesn't take much maintenance, get this one. If you want a quiet saw, get this one. If you are using it for camping, definitely get this one. Honestly unless you need to have a serious logging saw, or are already married to another brand that has an electric saw, I would tell you to get this one, it will do everything you need.
