My wife and I have family and friends all over the United States and living abroad. Skype is one of our go-to communication tools for keeping in touch with distant friends and relatives. With our first child due to be born any day I Skype will become even more important for introducing our new addition to our loved ones. Prior to using the Logitech TV Cam HD we were using a HP laptop with an integrated web-cam and the Skype software.First, if you've never used Skype before it's really a great application. In essence anyone with a internet connection, web-cam and/or mic can create a free account and communicate across the world with video and voice. There are some features of Skype that cost money - mainly calling a cellular phone, land-line or using some of the video teleconferencing features such as party video chat or shared desktop. But for the novice user Skype is a very inexpensive way to stay in touch with people important to you. Best of all - no phone/cable companies are involved (outside of your ISP)!I'm a big fan of Logitech products and the TV Cam HD continues the trend of easy to use, quality products from them. From opening the box to chatting with friends and family is a 10-minute installation. In the box:- The camera. This includes an adjustable folding stand that is permanently affixed to the camera and serves a few purposes. Mainly it can, as the name implies, be used to tilt and prop the camera in a multitude of angles. There is a standard tripod mounting bracket on the bottom of the stand as well.- HDMI cable. I love that Logitech included it in the box.- AC adapter.- Remote control. This is a small remote with a piano-black polished finish and nine matte-black plastic buttons. The controls are very responsive and should be given that the remote is the only means of input on the device. That's it. Everything else is already built into the camera assembly.Setup:Setting the device up for the first time is very easy and very fast. For me it was as simple as clipping the device to the top of my wall mounted HDTV in my living room, running the HDMI cable to an open input, and running the AC power adapter to a nearby wall outlet. As soon as everything is connected select the correct input on the HDTV and go through the initial setup wizard that has you choose basic options such as language, timezone and networking options. I'm using WiFi with the device and have had no problems with setup or connecting to calls. There was a very fast initial camera software update that was automatically detected, downloaded and installed on the unit in less than two minutes. Note that if you haven't previously setup a Skype account you must do so before placing any type of calls and can be done from the TV Cam HD.Calls:Again using WiFi (802.11 N) I have been very successful in receiving and placing calls. There are a few instances of a slight delay or a momentary pause in the video but those same issues occur when placing Skype calls on my laptop. The video quality is head and shoulders better than that of my laptops built-in web-cam. The video quality is really very good and I would compare it to the same quality from my Sony HD Camcorder. Keep in mind that the quality of incoming video will be determined at the source. So if you're chatting with a friend using a low-quality camera that will translate into a low quality resolution on your end.The zoom and pan features of the camera are really terrific and mean that you don't have to get up and try adjusting the angle of the camera once in a call. Everything is controlled via the remote. Holding the zoom button will cause a the zoom to quickly operate while depressing the zoom button once will cause the unit to incrementally zoom in. The view angle is extremely large. I have the camera about 12ft from my seating area in my living room and can get most of my room in the cameras view angle.Misc. Items:The nature of this product means that certain features within Skype are missing. For example in the PC version of Skype you can transfer files (pictures and more) to the other person using a built-in text like feature. That is not present in this device and really not something practical given the limitations of the input device (remote control) and access to network drives. This unit does not feature a on/off button and always remains on. When I described that to my mother-in-law she definitely took issue with that - for both power consumption and paranoia purposes. Take it for what it's worth but not something that I even gave a second thought to.The missed calls indicator is really subdued and just a plain white led that lights up on the face of the camera. I don't use Skype as a primary means of communication as both my wife and I have cellphones and tend to coordinate our Skype sessions ahead of time. But the light is very easy to miss if you're not specifically looking for it.Conclusion:I'm very happy with this product and absolutely looking forward to introduci

I've always thought it would be nice to have an "all-in-one" home / home office solution for use with video conferencing products, such as Skype. Well, that's exactly what this product is designed for. Normally you'd need to have a PC setup with a webcam and connected to a TV if you wanted to break away from the computer monitor. Not any more; let's see how it works.DESIGN & INSTALLThe "TV Cam" is basically a very large webcam with everything housed inside. Although on a 50" TV it doesn't look all that big. It blends in rather nicely. I'll be uploading a picture soon. It's designed so that it can either sit on the TV or screw onto a tri-pod in case you want to mount it elsewhere. The TV Cam has an HDMI connection, power, and optional network jack (RJ45). Although you can connect via Wireless for the require network connection. The box includes all you need to get it setup, including instructions, IR remote, and the previously mentioned HDMI and power cables. Network cable isn't included. The device does have a "mail" icon that will illuminate when you have a message or notification, such as a missed call. Unfortunately as with Skype on your Phone/PC, acknowledging them on one device, doesn't make the light go away on all other devices.Sitting on the TV, the HDMI cable can go directly to your TV, unless you run everything to your receiver which will require a longer cable. However, it does need power, which will need an outlet of course. The included cable just barely reached the surge protector on the floor, which was about 6ft down.SETUPOnce you have it plugged in and set your TV to the appropriate input, you're ready to get started with the very basic setup. After you power on the device, it will walk you through a few quick questions such as network settings (if on wireless) and your Skype user account. There will likely be a software update that it has to download, which I would recommend allowing it do before you use it.If you aren't prompted to update, just restart it or get the update yourself in the Settings menu. Speaking of the menu, everything is easily accessible via the included IR remote. Both the remote and menu are very easy to use, simple layout, and is very responsive. After you login to Skype, you can see all of your contacts, make/receive calls, change volume, video preview, etc.REAL WORLD USEFirst, the 720p video looks excellent on my 50" 1080p Toshiba LED TV. Even with very low lighting, I can see everything perfectly fine. While you do want to adjust the angle of the camera on the TV, you can zoom into a certain area if you'd like. As long as you don't max out the zoom (which is digital) you should still have a nice picture. Too far, and it will look grainy.I called a few friends to see what they thought. Ultimately they were quite impressed. The picture and sound quality was much better my slightly older 2MP webcam. However, the quality I was seeing still wasn't as clear as what they would see. That likely due to Skype's network bandwidth as I really don't think they are fully supporting 720p video. In either case, they could hear me just fine at about 9 ft away from the TV. They said there was a slight but noticeable echo when I was talking, which was expected given the distance and size of the room (14x14x9). Also surprising was that there was no feedback or mic issues when I ran audio through my 7.1 surround sound system. And the center channel is less than a foot away from the Web Cam.With incoming calls you can either have it set for a normal phone ringing sound (default) or the well known Skype ring tone. Kind of wish there were more options. But since this device is on all the time, you always know when a call is coming through via it's internal speaker. While you could sign-out or pull the power cord, it is always "on" and ready to go. If you get a call, you'll need to change TV inputs (or turn it on). Or answer on another Skype device. For this, I'd suggest a universal remote, such as Harmony. This makes it very easy to just push a button and switch over to the Skype input when needed.PROS:* Very easy setup* Excellent video quality* Easy to use controls/menu* Sensitive microphone* Multiple mounting optionsCONS:* Slightly pricey* Skype's network needs full 720p supportCONCLUSIONConsidering how easy this is to use and how well it performs, I will definitely suggest this for family and friends who I just don't see all that much these days. Even if you have the technical expertise, such as myself, to setup a PC/Webcam/Skype setup, you really can't beat the simplicity of this solution. Especially for folks who really do just want a turnkey setup that works perfectly out of the box.

I posted this review on some other sites when this device was available at those sites. Now that it's available here, I'm posting here since I like to reference Amazon for product reviews:In full disclosure, I got the Logitech TV cam HD free as a review unit so some may see my review as biased but I'll try to be as impartial as possible in my review.I really liked this unit as an easy one-stop device for Skype video and audio calling. It's really user friendly with easy set up so that a nontechy can put it together and get started. The camera image is pretty good and the built in microphone is acceptable. I compared the image quality to my HD Pro webcam C910 and found it comparable. The C910 though is used with software driver on a computer so it has a larger set of options than the TV Cam. Because of it's ease of use and utility, I gave a rating of 8 on a scale of 10.Likes:Ease of set up and ease of use. The ability to use it without a computer is awesome. Just hook it up to an HDMI device that has a speaker, a router or switch, and a power source and you're set to go. The set up of the Skype application was very easy and got online within 10 minutes of opening the box. This unit works on both wired and wireless networks which is really nice. It automatically detects he network and selects it. An interesting feature/bug is that you can't have a wireless connection when you've got the camera plugged in to an active wired network. The user interface won't attempt to detect the wireless network if attached to a wired connection.Since it works wirelessly, this camera is very easily used as a security/baby monitor. It doesn't have to be connected to a display to work so you can set the Skype account to automatically accept calls and you can call it using a mobile phone, tablet, computer, etc.. to see what the camera sees and hears: Very cool. The camera has a built in speaker for a ringer which is really convenient if you want to turn off the display or if it goes to sleep. You're alerted to the incoming call and all you have to do is hit the select button on the remote and you answer the call. You just won't know who the caller is though since the display is off. The ring tone is that of an old fashioned metal phone ringer. If you don't like it, you're sort of out of luck since there isn't the option to select a different ring tone. The device has a really cool feature in that when you miss a call, a mail icon is lit on it so that even though the display or tv is sleeping or is off, you can see that you missed a call. Very cool idea.As is often the case, making things easy to use often results in limits to features.I'll categorize my negative findings as those that I find critical, significant, and annoyances that I can live with.Critical:There's no on/off switch. The unit stays on or you have to unplug it from the power source. In these days of going "green", one would think you could turn the device off as you wish. I really don't understand the movement for not being able to switch off powered devices. My Roku device has the same issue, and maybe I'm old fashioned but this drives me crazy. The Left/Right and Up/Down panning didn't work intuitively using the remote control. When I tried to pan the camera in any of the four directions within the video settings so that I can set the video field for Skype, the camera wouldn't pan in these directions. Zoom In and Zoom Out worked fine but on my unit, L/R and U/D don't work most of the time. I did get it to work once or twice but pointing the remote at the device differently didn't change the camera's response. I could see the light coming out of the remote on the video image though so I knew it's not the remote. I would suggest that in a future version of the software, that there be an indicator on the screen that shows when the zoom and panning is occurring. Right now, all you see is the image changing, so when you don't see the image changing, you don't know if it's the remote, or if it's the device, or something else. At least with some sort of indicator, one would see that the device is detecting the remote but is not responding for some reason. After talking to Logitech, I learned that since the camera doesn't have a way to mechanically pan in different directions, if you're not zoomed into an image, you can't pan left or right. The panning is only available within the image range of the lens. So in the end, I just misunderstood, what the capabilities of the panning and zooming.Significant:Using the device with Wifi seemed to degrade the video performance. I'm using an 802.11AC router so throughput from the device to the router shouldn't be the cause of the stuttering I saw in the video calls. I didn't see any way to determine the connection speed of the device so I couldn't troubleshoot why the video quality was worse. Furthermore, when I used the wired connection on the camera, it was a wired connection to a wireless bridge. This connection produced a much bett

I have to say I was skeptical when I ordered this unit, but after receiving it, I was immediately impressed with the packaging before I even opened it up and played with it. Logitech is clearly trying to take a page from the Apple playbook with regard to slick packaging, but still using their blue-green and black color scheme they've used for so long. The unit is larger than you'd probably expect, so make sure you verify the dimensions before you order it so that you can be sure it fits where you want.I bought the unit to use in our living room to Skype with friends and family, but unfortunately it does NOT have a built-in speaker, so you have to be able to output sound through your TV. We use a commercial grade Panasonic plasma monitor that is strictly a display (no tuner, no speakers) like you would see in a sports bar. This means that I route all sound through a home theater receiver system. Because the Logitech Skype cam relies on the HDMI connection to the TV for sound, the unit was not usable for my intended purpose. However, my folks have a TV like 99% of the other people in this country - one with speakers built into it, so I decided to bring it to their house and hook it up on my last visit. Wow, was I impressed. Blown away might even be a good way to describe my first impression.First off, the thing is ridiculously easy to install - plug in the power supply (which uses a standard micro-USB connector to attach to the camera - nice job Logitech!), then plug the included HDMI cable into an open HDMI port on the TV and then to the camera. Literally within 2 minutes I was previewing video on my folks' living room TV and they were wondering how the heck I got a full screen Hi-Def image of their two easy chairs onto the TV screen! :-)Next came setting up a Skype account for my Mom, which I did from my laptop because it is just faster and easier.Once that was done, I logged into the unit using the new Skype account and then called my kids back home to fire up one of their laptops for a test. They were using a new MacBook Air on their end and we had cable modem connections on both sides, so we had plenty of bandwidth.I was very impressed with the speed with which the camera rendered full screen HD video from the Macbook - there was VERY little hesitation or tearing, pixelation, or anything like that. Once in a while we'd get a little hiccup (the usual Skype buffering thing that always seems to happen). But the quality was every bit as good (or better) as Skyping directly from my brand new top-of-the-line MacBook Pro Retina. There were some audio delays that my kids reported; I've since tested it from the other side and found it to be a duplexing issue - if both parties are talking at the same time, the Logitech cam will tend to mute itself so that you can't hear the person using it for a half second or so.The thing that makes this unit perfect for the grand parents' house is how easy it is to set up and use. You just have to explain to Mom & Dad that it is on a separate input, and if they can handle switching from Input 1 to Input 2 using their TV remote, they can use this web cam. So much easier than fiddling with computers!A nifty feature is that the unit is always logged in and will "ring" even when you are watching a different input source (like TV or a DVD). I taught my folks to just switch inputs when they hear that distinctive Skype ring. :-)The quality of construction is also very good - with three separate microphones on the top of the unit and a camera that can zoom and pan ( a few degrees) in order to center the image on the right area of the room. There is a tilting base that can be adjusted to level the camera for uneven surfaces, and it even includes a standard threaded tripod mount on the bottom if you want to use it with a small tripod like aJoby Gorillapod Original Black/Charcoal - Joby GP1-B1AM.The low-light performance is extremely good as well - I was impressed at how easily it rendered subjects in the dimly lit TV room at my parents' house and the relative sharpness of the image considering the size of the room and how far away my folks are typically sitting from the camera (about 10 to 12 feet).Overall a hearty thumbs up, especially if you want to set up your kids' grandparents with some web chatting capabilities or want to create a family-friendly way to do skype chats. Just keep in mind that it is Skype-only (free or paid) and will not work on a TV that doesn't have HDMI and audio playback over HDMI.

I have been using this Logitech 960-000921 TV Cam for about 10 days now with close to 50 video calls. I give the product 4 stars. Setup was very easy. Basically you unpack the TV Cam and either mount it on top of your TV or on a camera tripod (tripod not included). You plug an HDMI cable (included) from the back of the TV Cam to an HDMI input on your TV. You then plug the power adapter into the TV Cam and any standard electrical outlet. You then turn on your TV and tune to the HDMI input you used. Then you just follow the easy set up instructions on your TV screen. You can set up this TV Cam using an Ethernet cable or Wi-fi. I used Wi-fi. And of course you need a Skype account if you do not already have one, but they come free. You log the TV Cam onto your Wi-fi network and then log into your Skype account. The TV Cam does most all else. Just follow the prompts and on screen instructions. This TV Cam operates via its remote (included) only and to get the remote to work you have to pull out a small white arrow tab from the bottom of the remote, which activates the battery for the remote. Once you complete set up (took me about 5 minutes) you are ready to make and receive video calls via Skype. The video call quality I got with this product was very good (you do need high speed broadband and the faster the better). People I conferenced with could see and hear me clearly despite the fact I was a good 10 feet away from the TV Cam. When zoomed out they get a panoramic view of say an entire sofa. Audio and video quality were fine, both incoming and outgoing (the TV Cam of course controls only the quality on your end of the call). All that I conferenced with were amazed by this product. They thought it "cool." I also liked the fact that you can mount this TV Cam on a camera tripod instead of a TV, which allows maximum options with mount height, angles and so on.So why 4 stars instead of 5? First, the TV Cam has a feature that rings like a phone if you have the TV turned off to let you know somebody is attempting to call you on Skype. But the volume on the ringer is very low even when set to maximum, and I found I could not hear it even on maximum volume if I was more than 20 feet away from the TV (and I have average hearing). Second, this TV Cam works only with Skype. Not a problem for me as I had a Skype account anyway and they are free in any event. But I was disappointed the TV Cam does not work with Logitech Vid software (also free), given Logitech is the manufacturer of this product and I was already using the Logitech Vid software on my various computers with Logitech webcams. Third, this product uses digital zoom, not optical zoom. Some zoom is better than none, but optical zoom is better than digital zoom. Fourth, and please pay attention, this TV cam zooms in and out and can pan left, right, up or down via the remote, but the panning features do not work unless you zoom in first. The more you zoom in, the more you can pan. The less you zoom in, the less you can pan. When you are fully zoomed out, you cannot pan at all. The instructions did not fully explain this, the result being the first day or two I had this TV cam I thought it did not pan at all or that I had a defective remote. Once I discovered you have to zoom in first before the TV Cam will pan, all was fine.I am quite happy with the product as are the people I had video calls with. And this TV Cam would be great for video conferences with the grand kids. I do recommend the product.

This is a great simple product that enables old (non-smart) HDTVs to connect thorugh Skype. Although it is not very cheap, it works, and does its job well. But first, I need to get something out. It's no secret that Logitech builds great hardware, but no so great software (I had tried the Logitech Revue, and it's software support was nothing short of a disaster). Fortunately, this box does not contain a complex software (only Skype), so works okay. Do not get me wrong, I ran into a system error in my initial setup, but a reboot here and there does not hurt much.I appreciated the devices even while taking it out of the box. As expected from Logitech, everything is well designed. And unlike many device producers, they actually place the much necessary HDMI cable within. The camera itself is easily mounted on the TV, and the basic latching mechanism is sufficient to secure it in place (or if you have a tripod, it had a screw base below). The initial setup was easy enough. Although as mentioned above, I needed a reboot due to a "system error", and I needed to restart the download of the first update, I did not bother much. The only other thing that can be said is that you miss the opportunity to use a keyboard, especially if you have a 30 character WiFi password as I do.The overall interface is very simple. On the left there was a menu of main items (status, contacts, phone call, settings), and the main part of the screen is covered by the actual activity. On the status page, there are options for changing your picture, or Skype status (I prefer to set it do no dot disturb by default), and the settings page offers more advanced setup, but still nothing fancy. For example, you can zoom and pan with the camera controls, but there are no filters, light control, and so on. The device is meant to be mostly automatic. The video camera of course has great quality, and having an array microphone helps with working at a large room. So I have no complaints about the actual features of the device.Something I especially liked was the CEC support. Even if your TV is off, or at another input, it automatically comes back on to the Skype channel if there is an activity. This is nice, but it also caused me some concern about privacy. The device does not have a standby option, and will always be waiting for connections. If it's setup to auto answer (some guest plays around the settings), then you'll broadcast your living room to the first caller, which could be awkward. So make sure nobody changes those controls, or nobody walks in their underpants in the living room :)The bottom line is the device works great for its purpose. If your HDTV does did have smart TV functionality, or you do not own an Xbox Kinect, then this is the device to have for connecting to your family. Even if you cannot afford to buy a set, you can setup one for your parents, and use a regular laptop on your side.

Before purchasing this Logitech camera, here are some of the options that I considered...I briefly looked at TelyHD. This seems very promising as well, but I couldn't get a chance to try it at a local store. Didn't want to spend $250 without trying it first. So, I haven't yet been able to pursue this (though, I would love to check it out). TelyHD and Logitech cameras seem pretty similar. The TelyHD seems to have a few additional features that the Logitech device lacks (eg: photo sharing, video-calls with multiple parties, etc), but is a little more expensive esp if you want to get all these features. Relatively speaking, Logitech's UI seemed very simple & intuitive.I briefly considered XBox+Kinect -- currently, there's no Skype app for XBox (plus, this setup would be a little complex for older/non-techie folks in the family).Using a tablet/laptop is an option -- but the cameras in these devices don't cover a wide angle, plus it's a little tedious to project them onto the big screen. Here's a summary of my experience with the Logitech TV Cam HD ...*The camera has skype built-in. No computer is needed. The camera needs only three things to function(1)Power (supports both 110v and 220v)(2)A broadband internet connection (supports both wired & wireless connections)(3)A TV with one unused HDMI port*The camera is fairly compact & light-weight.*Mounting the camera on the TV was very easy.*Setting up the camera & logging onto Skype was very easy & quick (took about 3 minutes)*The remote has about 6 buttons & is very intutive. Likewise, the UI is very simple & easy to use.*Video quality is below that of a SD transmission, even with a 15/7Mbps broadband connection on my side. Audio quality for the other side gets worse if you are more than 5-7ft away from the camera. So far, I have chatted with folks on the east coast & in India (using the camera). In each of these calls, I have found the video/audio quality to be acceptable.*Since the camera has a built-in ringer -- you get notifications of incoming calls even when the TV is off*There's a notification of missed calls*The camera is very, very suitable for non-techie grand parents. This is an annoyance, esp as kids try to walk into the video-frame. I wish that Logitech "fixes" it. (2)Another annoyance -- default settings aren't optimal (a)Contacts are not sorted by status, by default (b)When picking up an incoming call, only audio is enabled by default (c)Skype's ringtone is not enabled by default (3)It would be nice to get support for multi-party video-calls & for sharing pictures/videos (premium versions of TelyHD support these features already)More information/links are on my blog at [...]

I was excited to get a chance to try the new Logitech HD Skype webcam. My elderly dad gets a little confused with all the windows on his computer, and skyping with him is not always easy. Also, the webcam on his computer is not that great and does not perform well. The webcam is very easy to setup. It requires an HDMI connection on your television. It is powered via a microUSB connector; a power adapter is supplied but I was able to power it via one of the TV's USB ports. The network connection is achieved via an ethernet port in the back or the built-in WiFi. The base has an articulated, rubberized foot that can be set on most TVs. It also has a standard camera thread mount allowing a more elaborate setup. When you power it up, the webcam takes you through a simple setup wizard that lets you configure the WiFi network (unless you plugged in an ethernet jack), firmware updates and Skype setup. You can use an existing Skype account or create a new one. I was able to use my existing Skype account whereas the Skype client built into my 2011 Panasonic TC-P60ST50 TV could not let me log in because I have too many contacts (under 50!)All features are accessed through the simple, 9 keys remote. I had no trouble teaching these buttons to a universal remote. Using the webcam is very simple, with its familiar Skype interface and simplified menus. You can create a list of favorite contacts that is always within reach. If you have a recent television, an incoming call will automatically switch the TV's input to the webcam's, ringing in the TV's speakers and displaying "incoming call from..." on the screen. The HD camera offers spectacular video quality even in low light. Audio quality is just as remarkable, probably thanks to the four microphones and some clever signal processing.I have previously purchased a webcam to use on my Panasonic TV. It is just a USB webcam with microphone, all the software residing in the TV. Yet, it cost almost as much and its quality and performance are nowhere near what this product delivers. The only concern I have with this webcam is that it requires a free HDMI port on the TV, and the input switching it requires may be confusing for an elderly person. Still, it is the best solution to provide Skype access to technophobes. It works flawlessly (the latest firmware upgrade fixed a crashbug that was bothering me), is very simple to use and flexible, and its video and audio qualities are unparalleled, all that at a surprisingly reasonble price.Very highly recommended.

This is a very easy solution to be able to use a webcam to video chat over the Internet. It is powered by Skype, which is one of the most popular VOIP and video chat services out there. And instead of hooking it up to your computer, it works on any HDTV. Setup was spectacularly easy; you plug it into an HDMI port on your TV and to an electrical outlet. You can put it on top of your TV using the built in stand or put it under your TV. It has a tripod mout too (although I am not quite sure that I would want to put this on a tripod).Once you have it plugged in, you simply use your TV remote to switch the HDMI input to the TV Cam and then the setup begins. You must agree to the Skype terms and conditions, and then use the included remote to either connect to wifi or set up the Cam with an ethernet connection. I used wifi setup for mine and all you is pick your network and enter your password and that is it. It connected easily to my wifi setup. Then you just sign in with your Skype account and all of your existing contacts are already there. You can even use the Skype call testing service to test your setup. The picture quality is amazing. It really is HD and has a nice wide viewing angle. The sound quality is good too. It has four mics on the top of the unit to help amplify the sound. The included remote works well and I have no complaints about this cam. If you are a Skype user, this is a great device to use to video message your friends and family. It also works with just audio too. I am getting one of these for my mother so we can vide chat each other and keep in touch. This device will make keeping in contact with your loved ones easy.

This camera is a workhorse. It's definitely doesn't have the most high quality capturing or any other notable features, but it does great in low light, has an excellent mic, is easy to install and fits into most budgets. Unfortunately, the Logitech capture software that comes with the product performed rather poorly or didn't work at all; though the drivers are fine.Installing the camera software and drivers is easy enough: just pop in the disc, run setup, plug in the camera when it tells you and complete the wizard. The first time I installed the software, everything worked fine. I was able to capture images and video as well as use the motion detection features. Unfortunately, soon after that video capture just stopped working. I spent hours trying to troubleshoot the problem while following Logitech's resolution steps to the letter, but it never worked again. Instead, I tried other capture software like the open source iSpy and even Microsoft Expression Studio. Both of those worked fine, so it most likely isn't a driver issue -- just bad software (not atypical for Logitech; good hardware, decent drivers, but bad software). The camera has full compatibility with Skype and most other apps that use the webcam. The microphone is pretty excellent and can be used as a primary mic for gaming if one so chooses. It's not going to beat out a good headset by a longshot, but it is pretty impressive for a mic of this nature. The cam sits nicely on top of most monitors, but only has a vertical adjustment. To account for the lack of versatility in the mount, the camera control software utilizes a facial tracking algorithm that manages the digital zoom to always try to keep your face centered and zoomed in the picture. It works pretty well, I have to say. The drivers also seem to include a hook to allow the control software to pop up whenever the cam is turned on (this functionality can also be disabled). The control software allows you to adjust the picture quality and enable or disable certain features such as facial tracking. It's quite useful. This camera is not going to impress any gurus, but it will definitely get the job done at a fairly modest price. It might even be the best cam available in this price range. I would definitely recommend it, but I would also like to see Logitech fix the issues with the capture software.

The main problem I have with this camera is the audio. If neither me or the other person are talking there is this background noise that echoes back and forth between us, while becoming increasingly louder. If the other person talks, the noise goes away, only to start again after they stop talking. It's very annoying because I have to lower the TV volume when no one is talking (or else the noise becomes unbearable), and increase it when they resume talking. And yes, I do have the latest firmware version installed. I did encounter this with everyone I talked to. This never happens when I talk to them on my PC (on which I use the excellent Logitech Webcam Pro 9000).Video is excellent. Everyone I talked to mentioned the excellent clarity of the video stream.Setting up was a snap. Unpack, mount at upper TV bezel, and connect to the HDMI port. When powering it up, you are asked to connect to a wifi network (or Wired). After a connection is made, you will be asked to update to the latest version. After the update, the device is rebooted, and is ready to be used. I logged in with my Skype account, and all my contacts were there. It definitely makes Skyping convenient, but the audio issue will deter me from using this device in the future as much as I like to, until I find a solution (I tried positioning the device as far as possible from the TV speakers, but that didn't help). However, until I actually do find that solution, I cannot fully recommend this cam.

Logitech has a habit of making some very decent products for a reasonable price, and the C270 web camera is no exception.Out of the box, it is simple to set up. It installs easily with Windows. Please note you should check the Logitech website to ensure you have the latest version of the installation software. If your purchased box includes an older version, it will generally work, but like most software, the camera's software gets updated on occasion. Older versions may not cleanly install on 64 bit versions of Windows, or may lack other features, like streamlined Facebook uploading. The software also performs YouTube connectivity. As of this writing the current version for Windows 7 is 2.30.2396.0. The quick install is under 7MB and the full installation consumes about 136MB of hard disk space. Neither large but keep it in mind if you are short on hard disk space!I also have used this on my Mac. It is advertised as being for Windows, but like most things, you should be able to use this on your Mac. The Windows limitation is more of a software issue, where the software Logitech provides is Windows-based. It has nothing to do with your Operating System recognizing the camera itself. Also, I installed the software to see what it was like, but for the primary purpose of doing video calls, you do not need the software. You can use Skype or any other type of generic video-chat product.Depending on how "smart" your TV is, it is also possible to use this on a TV with Skype, in combination with your laptop, etc.I use the web cam to do calls on a 50" TV and it is crystal clear. Resolution on the webcam is 720P, your basic high definition. Resolution is 1280 x 720 for video. Video reproduction is fantastic, fluid, and clear. As with any device of this type, any break-up or choppiness is typically a result of your ISP connection or Skype connection, not the web cam. I have not had an issue either way. Still photos are produced as high as 3MP with software enhancement. Audio quality is excellent and I use it from about 12 feet from the camera when on the big screen TV.The camera is lightweight and only a few inches in size. It includes a built in clip/stand. The clip holds well on my 19" Dell flat monitor as well as on my laptop screen (several different Lenovo models including an R400). The camera also clipped easily to my TV, a stand mounted 50" Panasonic plasma. Depending on your particular monitor/laptop model, of course, your experience may vary. As a stand, the clip/stand is very stable and holds the camera securely. The camera cable is 5 feet long, long enough for most applications. Included with the camera are a user manual and the Logitech Vid HD software CD. The camera carries a 2 year warranty.I have a couple of other web cameras and although this one is not remarkably better than any other HD cam, I have no complaints about it at all. It is a full featured, wonderful HD web camera available for a very reasonable price.

I've been a Skype user ever since it first appeared. Yahoo and others never measured up to the quality and ease of use. I have webcams on just about everything--iPad and iPhone (of course), Mac Mini, Macbook Pro, and my HP desktop. This Logitech TV Cam takes Skype to a new level. Sitting in a couch in front of the TV now affords the ability for everyone in the room to check in with friends and family without a computer. The picture is great (at least, when the people on the other end have a good quality webcam), and the quality of the image going out is certainly great.Others have mentioned the ease of setup. Man, there was a time when the idea of setting up such a high-tech piece of gear would guarantee a some choice words and a headache. It seems the Logitech people go out of their way to make their products fool-proof--both to set up and to use. And this is no different. Basically, plug it in and use it. Couldn't be simpler. My favorite aspects are, first, being able to do this on my flat-screen TV in high definition; second, being able to move around the room, making conversations more natural and comfortable; third, at night the light from the TV alone is just about good enough, though you may wish to turn on at least one ambient light source. There's more to like about this, especially for families who all want to share in the conversation.Since just about everyone has Skype these days, this unit is about as universal as you can get. Like most Logitech products, this one is highly recommended.

Got this for my folks who have an increasingly difficult time with technology/complexity, and could not be happier with it. The great thing about the TV Cam is that it is a self-contained Skype client that hooks directly to a TV (with HDMI) and does not require a computer. This avoids both the complexity of using a computer and the time one would have to wait for a computer to boot up. In addition, since it is standalone, it can ring for an incoming Skype call whether the TV is on or off. All one needs to do is to turn on the TV and switch inputs to get to the Skype interface, which is another bright point. The interface is kept very clean and simple, with very few extraneous options. Perfect for the elderly or Luddite. Calls are very easy to place or answer, and the video, although dependent upon the available bandwidth, is clear and stable. The audio works well, too. For testing, I had the unit in a cabinet behind closed glass doors, and it still easily picked up our voices. Incoming audio is of course played via the televisions built-in speakers. It is also worth noting that there is no power switch on the unit, which of course means it consumes some relatively small amount of power all the time, but also means that it is always ready to go when you want to use it. Finally, I would note that although the interface provides the capability to add and delete contacts and manage most Skype settings, anyone using the unit or setting it up for someone else will probably want to use a computer to more easily and quickly set up and configure Skype accounts.

The Logitech HD Webcam C270 is a great bargain for those seeking to record, share and chat without breaking the bank. The camera is slim and attractive, and I loved the fact that I could adjust its positioning on my monitor very easily, and that the camera is extremely stable once it's set up.The software installation process is fairly easy, although you have to be careful at a few steps in the installation process not to inadvertently include unwanted add-ons. The software itself is fairly easy to operate, and can actually enable the camera to accomplish some sophisticated functions like tracking your face when recording/video chatting, or operating for a set period via motion capture. I found the software slightly intrusive to keep running all the time, just because it seems like it's constantly reminding you about backups or updates, so I just run it when I want to use the webcam. As far as the hardware goes -- the Webcam C270 itself operates pretty well, and I didn't experience the dreaded vertical lines some here did (and that plagued my last web camera). The camera's images were sharp and clear for me, and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the microphone recorder, as well -- especially since it's some distance from me (as I've got the camera positioned on my monitor). As with many digital video cameras or webcams, the imagery you take may run a little 'warm' -- with lots of reds, golds and bright colors unless you balance the colors slightly (which the software makes it easy to do), but it's a great webcam for the price, and a model that's a perfect choice for those seeking to use it to web chat with loved ones far away. They'll feel like they're right there with you.

This is the coolest thing for Skype calls. We use Skype all the time to talk to relatives, but it's frustrating to be tied to a computer or to fuss with a tablet. I hooked this up to my HDTV, ran through the setup process in about 10 minutes (some of that time was digging out my Skype password, which I had forgotten), and I made a call to my parents almost immediately. We're also using wi-fi, and this had no problem connecting and maintaining a steady stream. The best thing about this is that we can finally be comfortable talking on Skype. My wife and I talked while my daughter played in the room, and the camera could back out far enough to see all of us. It provided a great family moment of kids/grandkids/grandparents.The only thing we don't use is the always-on feature. Just like with my cellphone, I like being able to control when I receive calls. It's fairly easy to turn this on and off, though, when I want to use it so that has not been a problem. If you use Skype on a regular basis, this is a great investment. It's great for make more comfortable calls with the entire family.
