EDIT 3/23/13:I am still extremely satisfied with my hard drives. Speeds with my 1.5TB drives range from 55MB/s to ~90MB/s depending on how large the content is. Transferring 100GB+ at once gives speeds in the ~60s but transferring only a few GBs gives speeds in the 90s. The advertised speed is ~100MB/s and so far I am happy with my performance. Before I did not understand that transferring too much at once is not a good (e.g. 500GB at once) idea and that instead it's best to transfer it in smaller parts (100GB x 5) for optimal results. Smaller files (e.g. 10GB) transfer at ~90MB/s of course :).Happy customer.---I own a six-month old Lacie mini 500gb 7200rpm USB 3.0 and two brand new Lacie mini 1.5TB USB 3.0 drives. I recently bought a USB 3.0 express card too.UPDATE November 1, 2012:I just transferred 144gb data from one 1.5TB lacie to my other 1.5TB lacie in 58 minutes = ~2.48gb/min transfer speed. My new laptop has the following specs: [Dell Inspiron N411Z, i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz (4CPUs), 8GB RAM, USB 3.0 two ports].From all the transfers I have done in the past few months I tell you, depending on the amount of data: if transferring a huge amount of data (e.g. 144gb) then speed is ~45mb/s but if transferring less (e.g. 60gb) then you can expect ~60gb/min.In summary, depending on the amount of data being transferred: you can expect transfer speeds to range from ~2.5gb/min - 3.75gb/min (on USB 3.0). If using USB 2.0 then you can expect typical USB 2.0 speeds (~20MB/s - 30MB/s).----------------:::PERFORMANCE :::SPEED: satisfied. I only own an old laptop and a cheap USB 3.0 express card so I'm sure these two are restricting my lacie drive's true potential.-On my old laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545 Dual Core T4400 @2.20GHz, 3gb DDR2 RAM, Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit), with the USB 3.0 express card the speed ranges from ~2GB-3.7GB/min. But, I was expecting over 4.5GB/min (at 80MB/s)... since it is USB 3.0... so I'm a bit disappointed but I understand it may be my old laptop's fault.Test #1: using the USB 3.0 express card I transferred exactly 21.0GB from laptop to 500gb hdd and it took exactly 8:44mins. This comes out to be an average transfer speed of ~ 2.33GB/min. From previous transfers I know with USB 2.0 the transfer speed is ~ half that.Test #2: using the USB 3.0 express card I transferred exactly 71.0GB from laptop to 1.5TB hdd and it took 33:15mins. This comes out to be an average transfer speed of ~2.15GB/min (about 2X as fast as USB 2.0).-TEST #3: I ran the 3rd test on the same laptop and with my 1.5TB Lacie USB 3.0 HDD (formatted to NTFS). I transferred exactly 117GB from laptop ----> 1.5TB mini. Time: 65mins 37seconds. 117GB / 65.5mins = ~1.8GB/min (average transfer speed). During the first two minutes the speed stayed at ~45MB/s and 7.42GB were transferred (7.42gb/2min = 3.71GB/min). But, the speed continued to drop slowly and stayed between 30MB/s and 35MB/s for the entire time left.-TEST #4: I ran the 4th test on the same laptop and with my 1.5TB Lacie USB 3.0 HDD (formatted to NTFS). I transferred 24.3GB in exactly 10:53 minutes. This comes out to be an average transfer speed of: 2.2GB/min. The highest speed sustained was 39.7MB/s and it slowly dropped to a sustained 37.4MB/s.-TEST #5: I transferred exactly 9.40GB from laptop to 1.5TB mini. For the first two minutes it stayed consistently between 47.3 - 46.7MB/S (same happened with TEST #3), but then dropped quickly to 30.2MB/s and then slowly continued to go up for the rest of the transfer until the transfer finished at 34.8MB/s. Total transfer time: 4:35minutes. The average transfer speed comes out to be: ~2.09GB/min.-TEST #6: 5.76GB transferred in 2:08minutes. The avg transfer speed then was: 5.76gb / (2.13) = 2.7GB/min.-TEST #7: I forgot exactly how much I transferred this time but the it was ~17GB and the transfer speed stayed at ~45MB/s the entire time which comes out to be > ~2.5GB/min.-Test #8: 13.8gb from laptop to 500gb mini USB 3.0 7200rpm, time: 4:16 minutes. The average trasfer speed comes out to be: 3.25GB/min (speeds stayed between 50MB/s - 53MB/s the entire time).-Test #9: 9.83gb from laptop to 500gb mini USB 3.0 7200rpm, time: 3:14 minutes. The average transfer speed comes out to be:3.02GB/min (speeds stayed between 50.5MB/s - 51.6MB/sthe entire time).-Test #10: 9.74gb from laptop to 1.5TB mini USB 3.0, time: 4:47 minutes. The average transfer speed comes out to be: 2.05GB/min (speeds stayed on average around at ~40MB/s).-Test #11: 10.1GB from laptop to 1.5TB drive. Time: 2:42minutes. That's 3.67GB/min.-Test #12: 3.13gb from 1.5TB to laptop: time: 2:36mins. Avg speed: 1.25GB/min-Test #13: 5.61gb/min from laptop to 1.5TB: time: 2:39min. Avg speed: 2.11gb/min-Test #14: 2:37GB in 38seconds = that's, 2.37GB / (38/60) = 2.37gb/0.63 = 3.76GB/min or 63.8MB/s. I use external drives at home and on the road to back up the various content and work products I create. The external 250 gig Hitachi I used for nearly three years had an interface electronic, not a drive, failure and needed replacement. This round I chose LaCie. Several people in my traveling, data intensive, hot, cold, dusty, bumpy world of wildland fire computing use LaCie external drives.The drive case is heavy aluminum wrapped in a soft plastic guard. It's bright orange, so I may not forget and leave it behind as I clean up my equipment and leave fire camp. Of course the color and styling also scream "LaCie" to any passers-by but that's not important is it ;). A cable was included in the package.LaCie has drive management and back up software installing automatically when you connect the drive. In my case, installation was smooth and product registration easy. You can also choose to reformat the drive, lose the software and run with a straight-up external lettered drive. I kept the software to test the whole package. When I buy the less costly/bottom line dollar drive products, the software included on them gives users less choice in installation. The LaCie software has not forced anything on me I did not choose, like a backup, or a flashing, insisting opportunity to buy an upgrade to get the REAL backup solution. I have not chosen to use LaCie's backup solution yet.I bought a case for the drive. It's a solid, padded, textured, multi-pocketed case. The length, and width of the drive and case together are a centimeter more than the length and width of my old setup. The thickness is nearly double that of my old external and its sleeve. The weight is about 4X more.I'll run it a year and let you know how things go. That's what counts for me.

I bought this hard-drive as a gift. I really do hate to say anything negative, but I was very bummed when my girlfriend opened it and it didn't work--no power to the device OR recognition of the hard-drive by ANY computer we tried (Mac or PC...and USB 2.0 or 3.0). I then bought a USB Y-Cable to see if that would help power it, but still no luck. Upon request from "AJ" to return the product (even though it was admittedly about a month later than the return policy accepts) I was denied a return immediately. I explained that the product was defective and that we never even had a chance to use it once, but apparently "AJ" either doesn't read their requests for returns and just denies them all immediately, or they just don't care enough about their customers for assistance with issues. Sorry, but I would not recommend this product or seller.

Bought this unit in October of 2012 exclusively as a second back up of all my iTunesmusic and my modestly-sized photo collection which normally live on my MacBook.(My first back up is on/in the Cloud.)Very easy to connect, set up, and use. Nice and flat, compact. Resides in a locked safefor most of it's existence, so any observation with reliability is unfortunately useless,since it only comes out and gets hooked up once a month or so for updating of thefiles.** But one observation I did notice was that the cable connection was very questionable.The cable would pop off from the LaCie if I happened to move the LaCie hard drive.What I found was that the orange rubber cover was actually preventing the cable fromseating properly! Taking off the rubber and carefully enlarging the port hole with anX-Acto knife allowed the cable to seat just a bit deeper into the drive connector. Hasn'tfallen off since. **Overall, I made a good choice buying this unit.

I was kind of surprised that its just a basic 'porsche' designed lacie with a rubber 'shoe' or a rubber frame around it. How well will it protect from rugged abuse? It looks like what I said in the title-okay. I am sure it would survive a small to medium fall and protect the drive well. I guess I fell a little bit for the whole 'orange-as-the-newest=cool-tech-gadget-colour' thing. But all in all-it works exactly as a lacie should work. Its fine with some half-decent rubber protection. I forgot what I paid but I think it was not too bad. Since it works well and everything is easy to use I'm giving it a 4. But it didn't blow my socks off-in 5 star territory-but hey-4 stars is pretty good and worth a look or a purchase.

After just a few days of lugging this around in my backpack, the part the cable connects to sank in. It still kinda worked after that, but the drive would disconnect with the slightest movement of the USB cord when in use (looking at the product pics now, it even looks very delicate). Shortly after, the hard drive stopped working altogether. I only got a week's use out of this thing. These might be okay if they are just going to sit on a desk, but their build-quality renders them non-portable.The older model LaCie Rugged drives I own have held up under much rougher handling and lots of travel and still work perfectly 3+ years later. It's just these mini models I don't trust.I would only consider getting this if you are not going to be lugging it around at all.

I bought this drive and it failed in 1st month. I talked to my other friends and several of them have same issue with the drive. The defect is tht the drive autimaticaly create bad sector after partitiation. You can not even access the data after that. Ther drive is still in warrantly. I asked Lacie for support and in return I got a reference to third party for paid service in recovering the data. I strongly suggest to stay away from Lacie if you have important data storage. The driver for the Lacie are unstable and have extensive quality issue.Look at Drivecrash ad with Lacie drives

Got this and put it to work right away. All I had trouble with was getting it out of the box, which that just meant cutting the tape. LOL.I recommend this drive for backups or for everyday external storage. It is compact in size, very easy to use and the rubber bumper that is on it, it's really thick and cushiony, so if you drop this drive, you won't kill it, like you would with a standard 3.5 harddrive.

This device was touted by a pro photographer in a photo seminar that I took. I'm using this as a backup device when in the field or traveling. A bit more complicated to set up than my other backup devices but it seems rugged as hell. I've had problems with other backup storage devices at the connector - that always seems to be a weak point. This one looks good there and has worked fine so far.

I've used LaCie drives for decades. But this small drive has Cable faults. Instead of being rugged as advertised it's as fragil as egg shells.. I"m still using it but I am very careful attaching the cable and feel I must use care not to keep the cable on when not in use.So if y?u are like me and expect stuff to work in tough conditions and hold up for years, this is not as advertised.

In February 2012, I purchased a Lacie rugged mini 1TB USB 3 external hard drive on Lacie's reputation for quality. I used this drive normally and treated it with the normal care for external hard drives (e.g., no jarring or removing the cable without waiting for the drive to properly shut down). Good quality and worked great. In September of 2012, the USB 3 mini connector on the drive became inconsistent. I would have to adjust or wiggle the cable connection on the drive in order for the drive to turn on. Naturally, this makes the problem worse and now the drive doesn't respond at all. I contacted Lacie for warranty work, and they agreed to repair the drive. Part of the normal repair process is a complete format or they may send you a different, refurbished drive. Needless to say, after 8 months of use, 100% data loss.

I have another drive exactly like this so I must've liked it before and do. It's compact, very noticeable with the bright orange housing. The first one I got I have no problems with and like it. Hopefully this one does the same thing. LaCie did a good job on this one.

The 7200 rpm allows me to work off of the drive with little decrease in performance and I am working from a solid state internal hard drive. The aesthetics, the thinner design, and the rugged capabilities that we've all learned to love from LaCie make this an incredible product.

Just what I was looking for. I can now carry my thousands of pictures wherever I go. I have one slight problem however; The space on the drive was divided during configeration. There is a space for storage, and a much larger space for backup. I don't want to use the drive for backup, I want to use all I TB for storage. I'm sure i'll figure it out. Overall, this is a great product.

I love the speed of this drive, it transfers data very fast average 100MBs read and write speed max write was 157MBs read max was 120MBs. I keep this drive in my bag at all times and it some times takes a beating but the drive has not failed one me yet and seems to be holding strong. Prior to this I had the Western Digital Passport Studio and it was a good drive but deffinitly not as durable. Its a little pricey but I would say its worth it. Only complaint is that I could not get it in 1tb 7200 rpm usb3. I may be upgrading the the thunderbolt drive next.

4/5 Because 'I' did not know what FAT32 or NTFS is.If it explained what they meant in "simpler wordings" before you configured it; would have been helpful.Otherwise I had to do research on how to reverse my mistake.Aside from my problems. Shock Absorb cover is great since I use it for school; Frequent Traveling/Data Transfer. Mac-to-PC/Vice Versa.Volume/Mass isn't Bad; I thought it'd be a bit smaller.Easy to Set Up.I don't think price was too bad either; about $20 more to go from 500GB to 1TB i believe.I'd recommend this Product.

After my Seagate crashed and I lost all my backed up information, I spent a long time researching for a new, reliable brand. So far it has lived up to it's reviews. The orange color is a bit much, but it is rugged, don't hesitate to carry it with you on trips . I haven't had it long enough to know if it is reliable, but it is working using Time Machine on my Mac. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a rugged portable hard drive.

I bought a 1TB portable hard drive but somehow it can only store 717MB! MEGABYTES!!! For $129! My micro-SD card stores more than this! Obviously this item I received is defective. I have always used WD or Seagate and this is the first time for me to buy LaCie. I shouldn't have switched. I'm e-mailing LaCie now to see if they'll remedy this.

This is easy to format and the directions on how to format it and install it are very easy to read. I have not had a problem with it at all thus far. My instructors have been using this product since it first came out and they have not had any problems with it.

This little hard drive works exactly as expected.It's formatted for both MAC and PC, which was my main concern as I use PC and my music producer uses Mac. I gave it to him to upload the files and he said he had absolutely no problem.When I got it back from him, the box was open, however. As I was walking to the subway, fumbling to put the hard drive in the case I bought for it, the bottom of the box came open and the drive flew out in slow motion, landing hard on the pavement.I totally freaked, as this would destroy most hard drives, but true to it's name, this RUGGED MINI was completely intact after the fall, and I was able to access all files.It's awesome, and small enough to carry in my purse.

After having one fail on us within months of owning it, we couldn't fork up the $500 they quoted us over the phone to recover the data. So Lacie replaced it with a brand new hard drive since it was still covered under warranty. The same problem occurred in both drives where the port in the back of the hard drive had somehow come loose, which then makes it impossible for the usb cable to fully plug into the port. We were sure to be extremely careful this time around by removing the usb cable from the hard drive every time we were traveling with it to avoid any tension on the port and the tip of the usb cable. I made sure to gently plug the usb cable in the port the correct way every time. And yet, the port has somehow manage to come loose again. So we're left here with a dead drive and no photos from our week vacation in Colorado! This is the last time we ever purchase another Lacie product.
