I probably would’ve never ventured outside the “mid-fi” space if these were available when I got into the hobby. They are not perfect but at $350, they get as close to perfect as I could ever hope for. The design good and the build is pretty solid. Actually, better built than the Arya -_- My only gripe is the springy cable.
FYI: They need a little power to sound their best, so a DAC/amp is recommended but not required.
Below is a list of some of the cans I’ve owned or currently own. They easily best everything I’ve heard under $700 and hold their own against some of the more premium cans on the list:
1. HiFiMan Arya (currently own)
2. Focal Elex (currently own)
3. Focal Elear
4. HiFiMan Sundara (currently own)
5. Audeze LCD-1 (currently own)
6. Oppo PM-2
7. Sennheiser HD650
8. Audio-Technica R70x
9. Oppo PM-3
10. Audeze Sine DX
11. Audeze Sine
12. Philips Fidelio X2
13. Phillips SHP9500

I’m a 20+ yr. professional muso, multi-instrumentalist, producer, capable mix engineer, looking for a set of cans under $500 to help me work confidently when I can’t use my studio monitors. I generally prefer closed-backs because they are multi-purpose, in that I can use them for recording vocals, which is a big part of what I do. So just to get the one real downside of this headphone out of the way, as with all open-backs, recording close to a mic is out of the question, sadly. Of course, their openness is exactly part of what makes them great.
I’ve never given much credibility to the YouTube audiophile community until recently. They all use a lot of cringy jargon like “detail reteival,” “resolving,” “shout,” etc., which is not how music peeps describe sound. I’ve been giving these folks the benefit of the doubt recently, though, while attempting to weed out the ones who don’t seem to know what they’re talking about - which is most of them imo. (Pro tip: if a headphone reviewer says anything from Beyerdynamic has excellent or pleasing “detail reteival,” run. Run far away, unless you enjoy having knives shoved in your ears. I’ve owned DT770, DT1770, DT1990 - all sold or returned. Fool me thrice...)
The Sundara has kept popping up in the audiophile top lists, but Hifiman doesn’t really market to the pro audio industry, so I never considered the brand until now. My previous open-back workhorse is the AKG Q701 (or K701), which is (are?) quite flat/accurate, but the lack of low-end makes it a chore to use. I’ve always found them devoid of fun, which can be useful even in mixing. They also distort easily for those short bursts of cranking the volume. Well, I am selling my AKGs after using the Sundara for 2 days. There is just no comparison here. Listening to the latest masters I just got back, I can’t believe the sound stage in these very affordable headphones. My eyes even widened with surprise a couple times, which is very rare for me. Yes, I’m a little jaded (sigh).
The FR is what I’d call "just flat enough." A smidge smiley, but not so much that I’m making bad mixing choices. The bass extension is devoid of muddiness, and near perfect. Nothing exaggerated here. They let you know (and enjoy) what’s down there without muddying things up. I do use Sonarworks, and I’ve found that mixing in the 400i preset to around 40% gives these that little extra sub-low help without messing up the rest of the FR. The mid range (low and high) is well-represented - not scooped, muddy, or honky. Top end is the way I like it. Sibilance is bright enough, but doesn't rip my head off at all. (I’m looking @ you, Beyer). And all the airy stuff above sibilance is just beauty. Over all, impressive separation across the FR.
(To sum up that last paragraph, the Sundara sounds really, really good.)
The build quality is the only thing I can’t give a perfect score to, even though they feel sturdy enough. This is the only category where every other serious headphone I’ve used beats it. Shure, Beyerdynamic, AudioTechnica, AKG, Sennheiser. The Sundara feel a bit flimsy comparatively - like I wouldn’t want to let them bang on my desk too often. But I’m careful with my stuff, so I’m not too concerned. If Hifiman had Beyer’s tank-like sturdiness and elegance, these would be the perfect set of cans. But I do like the way they look, strictly fashion-wise. I’ve also seen a lot of complaints about the lack of swivel, but it’s a non-issue for me. They fit great, and super comfortably.
After just a couple of days, I feel like I’ll be able to work in these much longer than my other headphones. Previously, I had to force myself to put my AKGs on for mixing, but I always kept going back to my other favorite cans, the Shure SRH1540. But closed-backs make mixing a lot more challenging and fatiguing. Now, I actually WANT to use my open-backs. Yay.
I haven't found anything in this price range that beats this headphone sonically. I’m glad I finally took a chance with a pair of entry-level “hifi audiophile” headphones for pro audio work. I’m confident these will be a useful tool for me for the foreseeable future. These are also the first set of planar magnetics I’ve tried, and I must say I’m very impressed! Give them a chance, and I doubt you’ll be disappointed. Unless, of course, you enjoy having knives shoved in your ears. In that case, you know where to go.

I'm not an audiophile, whatever that word means. I don't have expensive music equipment at home. I listen to music just for fun. I was trying to get new headphones and ventured into an audiophile headphone category instead of buying popular brand of headphones that you normally see at the stores like Best Buy. I heard audiophile headphone produce better sound with more clarity. I knew that some headphone require expensive amps to drive because of the impedance so I was also looking for headphones with low impedance that I could just connect to my cellphone.
I did a lot of research online and watched a lot of YouTube video reviews. I came up with this HIFIMAN SUNDARA planar magnetic headphone. All of the reviews were primarily positive. I liked the way they looked, that minimalistic industrial look. They were also advertised as able to be driven by any mobile device. I purchased them on Amazon about a month ago and was excited to try them out.
The moment I got them and started listening to them I was immediately disappointed. I connected them to my Pixel 3a and they sounded thin and distant, there was no base. Then I connected them to my PC and sound didn't improve that much. I google search for the playlist of songs that people use to test headphones. My other headphones Koss PortaPro and Sony MDR V-6 sounded much better with that playlist than Sundara. I tried to burn them in for a few days, I purchased small amp, the sound improved but still not enough to justify the difference in price to my other headphones. I just couldn't justify that I enjoyed listening to my $40 and $80 headphones more than to those $350 headphones. That were suppose to produce that audiophile experience.
My second biggest complain about these headphones, even bigger than the way they sound, is that they are UNCOMFORTABLE. Because of their weight they put the pressure on top of your head witch creates physical discomfort. You have to move headband forward, almost to the top of your forehead to relieve that pressure and they're still uncomfortable. They have big ear cups that apply too much pressure to the sides of your head. You feel that pressure right behind your ears, where the low jaw meets the upper jaw. It's seems as is someone is constantly squeezing there while you're listening to music. Put your fingers just below your ears and start squeezing. That is the effect I get with these headphones.
Bottom line I really wanted to like these headphones, and was excited to get them. But after having them for a month I will be selling them. I'm still on the market for quality headphones so if anyone has good recommendations please let me know.

Cons: A little heavy - compared to the Sennheiser 58X and the AKG 7xx that i previously owned as budget headphones these are definitely heavier. Not necessarily uncomfortably heavy for me but my wife says they are too heavy for her.
Bass impact low: even compared to other open eared headphones the impact of the bass is low. In most cases if you are looking at open eared headphones you are going to be aware of the typical lack of pounding bass and this wont be a big problem for you. The bass is very clear and sounds great but you do miss out on that feeling of impact you get with some of the other dynamic open ear headphones.
Harder to drive that you might expect: You can use these on your phone, you can use these with a cheap amp/dac. For me though i found that the volume on both my phone and on a gsx1000 gaming amp/dac the volume and sound quality was lacking. I also used them on a modi/magni stack and that gave them good volume and better sound, the asgard 3 however really makes these come to life. Planar headphones tend to be pretty inefficient compared to normal dynamic headphones so be prepared to have a decent amp+dac to run these to really get the most out of them.
Sound leakage: as with all open backed headphones if you listen to these in a quiet room everyone in the room will be able to hear what you are listening too. I would say these probably have a bit more sound leakage then the previous open backed headphones I have. I dont typically user open back headphones in areas where others can hear them since they dont provide much noise isolation causing me to hear the others as well so for me it inst a big deal but it is something to think about if you are going to take these on a bus or use them in a quiet office.
Pros:
Great Clarity: The clarity of the sound on the Sundaras is amazing. I would put them up against headphones i have heard that cost twice as much. you get great separation and a very clean sound in all ranges.
build quality: While these have an extremely thin driver the build quality for me is superb. Others have reported issues with their Sundaras however during my research it seems like the more recent reviews have not had issues. Maybe hifiman fixed earlier issues because these appear to be a very solid well designed set of headphones. With that said because the driver is so thin i would be careful about dropping them. Not because of damage to the outside of the headphones but because you could run the risk of damaging the thin driver.
Comfort: While i mentioned previously these were a little heavy. For me they are very comfortable. I used the original ear pads and also have tested out the dakoni sheepskin ear pads both work great. I have no issues using the headphones for hours every day.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
For $350 dollars you cant go wrong with the Sundara headphones unless you are looking for a set of headphones that are bass heavy (if that is the case i recommend closed headphones). With a decent amp and dac they sound and feel much closer to what i expect from headphones that cost twice as much. For my personal; taste i do occasionally finding myself missing a touch of the bass impact I get with my other headphones but for me it is far from a deal breaker. I would definitely recommend these for music lovers, movie buffs, as well as gamers (with a mod mic).

Edit~ After two months of owning it, the right ear has gone out. Amazon tells me to contact the manufacturer and the manufacturer says they dont warranty products sold through 3rd parties. I went through 6 different Amazon associates all just telling me to contact the manufacturer. They purposefully wasted my time until the window for product support closed. The sound was great, but is the price worth only two months of enjoyment?

You need an AMP with these. Most phones will not drive them properly.
I'm using them with the M11 pro from Fiio mostly. To do this get a balanced cable as the M11 pro barely can drive the Sundaras. Without the balanced cable the Bass is ok compared to other headphones but sounds anemic compared to the balanced output. My Magni and Modi 3 combo drive them well but the sound isn't at pleasant as the M11.
I have an average sized head and these are very comfortable on my head. The leather strap on the top of my head is much better than most hard headphone bands. I wish it had holes in it to breathe a bit. I may use a hole punch to mod it a bit. My Audeze lcd-2c have a similar strap that breathes because of the holes.
The Sundaras and a budget tube amp I bought ( Douk P1) Is the best sounding combo I have heard for some reason. A really bass rich sound full of sub bass. Clear but not too bright highs. I had written this Headphone amp of until I tried it with these headphones..
The original cable sucks, I'm using : NewFantasia Cable with 2.5mm Trrs Balanced Male to Dual 3.5mm Male from Amazon. Well worth the money. Original is really stiff and coils badly.
