I purchased this phone because it appears that this is one of just a handful of ECO-DECT low radiation cordless phones on sale in the US.My old phone was also a DECT (Panasonic KX-TG-9381), but not an ECO/low rad model.First are my RF measurements using a spectrum analyzer, followed by my review summary at the end of this.HANDSET IN CHARGER, IDLE, all RF values mW/m^2:Panasonic: 1.8 (left), 7.5 (bottom), 1.3 (right), 21.5 (top)Siemens: 0.011 (left), 0.008 (bottom), 0.004 (right), 0.003 (top)HANDSET OUT OF CHARGER, NOT MAKING CALL, base at 1 meter away, all values mW/m^2:Panasonic: 0.28 (left), 0.63 (bottom), 0.62 (right), 0.51 (top)Siemens: 0.011 (left), 0.008 (bottom), 0.004 (right), 0.003 (top)HANDSET OUT OF CHARGER, IN CALL, BASE 1 meter away, all values mW/m^2:Panasonic: 1.1 (left), 0.8 (bottom), 9.8 (right), 1.3 (top)Siemens ECO OFF: 3.8 (left), 5.0 (bottom), 13.1 (right), 4.0 (top)Siemens ECO ON: 7.2 (left, 5.0 (bottom), 13 (right), 9 (top)HANDSET OUT OF CHARGER, IN CALL, BASE 10 meters away, mW/m^2:Panasonic: (no numbers, phone has connection problems at this distance)Siemens ECO OFF: 18.0 (left), 1.0 (bottom), 72 (right), 0.005 (top)Siemens ECO ON: 5.6 (left), 1.9 (bottom), 8.7 (right), 1.2 (top)BASE ONLY (handset at 3M away), mW/m^2:Panasonic: 1.8 (left), 7.5 (bottom), 1.3 (right), 21.5 (top)Siemens: 32.0 (left), 42.8 (bottom), 1.4 (right), 51.8 (top)For comparison sake, iPhone 4G, with AT&T tower about 1/2 mile away:Not making call: 0.4 (left), 0.008 (bottom), 0.4 (right), 3.0 (top)Making a call: 1.1 (left), 1.3 (bottom), 4.5 (right), 1.2 (top)Caveats/notes:-All values captured using a low-end RF analyzer, providing rolling average over about 1 second.-Some values fluctuated. I tried to record the value when I deemed it to be stable.-RF analyzer was placed within 1 inch of the device when making measurements.-the RF analyzer has a built in antenna which is on the left side. This creates some positive bias in data measures on the right side of the phone, and negative bias on the left as I kept the orientation of the analyzer the same for all tests.-The RF analyzer has a spectrum range from 100MHz to 3GHz which covers DECT (1.9GHz).Summary:So does Siemens' claim of low-radiation/radiation-free hold up? The answer to this is yes and no. The claims hold true for radiation from the handset...ONLY, and when not in use. The numbers are what I consider to be background noise in my room for just the handset, when not in use. The tale is different for the base station. The Siemens base station, depending on measurement angle, can put out 2 to 10 times as much radiation as the Panasonic. The same is true with the handset when making a call (radiation jumps to about 2x that of the Panasonic). On top of all this, the Siemens apparently has some sort of data protocol that pops up at given intervals (even when the phone isn't making a call). In these blips, the RF communication between the device and phone lights up for about 10 seconds, and jumps as high as 200mW/M^2, but has a tendency to stick to around 40mW/m^2.In my opinion:I was expecting the Siemens to provide a low energy/rad device across the board. Their claims that the handset is nearly radiation free when not in use is accurate, but this claim makes no mention of the base station which continuously broadcasts at levels much higher than my older Panasonic DECT base station even when not in use... so if you keep the base station, lets say in you bedroom, you now have a device that's broadcasting 5-10 times as much RF as traditional DECT device... even when the device is not in use. In moving the base station to about 10 or so meters away, I think I may have created another problem where the handset now pushes extra hard when in use (causing high RF numbers during phone calls), so simply moving the base station as far away from your living space can may fix one problem but create another problem when the phone is actually being used. Switching on the ECO mode from the handset does appear to cut the amount of RF put out by the handset, but the base station continues to put out what I consider to be 2x to 10x the amount of RF energy that my older non-ECO DECT phone puts out.I also read lots of reviewers mentioning usability problems with the phone which I did not go into... I wanted to first validate some of the claims of low-radiation DECT. If you have any other questions or want me to clean up this review let me know... I did this pretty hastily over the course of about an hour. What you should do:Do your own research. The numbers I recorded were from a low-end RF analyzer with minimal scientific controls, and I did this review in a hasty fashion so take everything with a grain of salt and do some legwork of your own. If you need clarification or re-test of anything let me know and if I have some time slices I'll update this review.

I have been using these phones for about 18 months now in our office strictly as voip phones. We have one base unit and 3 cordless phones. For the price I think they are excellent. Call quality is good when talking to copper line or other voip. If you talk from one cordless to another the call quality is crystal clear. I haven't run into an issue with battery life yet. The range is surprisingly far but that is when ECO mode is turned off. I never used it yet with ECO mode on.The phones are connected through Vocalocity and their tech support was nice enough to help me configure them, even though they don't support these phones officially. Some annoyances are the screen lag when going through menus, and transferring a call seems like a chore compared to the Cisco SPA IP phones we have. One of the cordless was replaced under warranty after 2 months due to it not registering to the base unit.A couple of months ago the base unit and phones would freeze then restart when ever receiving a call. After hard resetting the base unit it would seem ok but the problem would return eventually. Gigaset didn't have any other solutions besides a reset or buying a new base unit.I tried two things which have seemed to clear it up. One idea was that the unit was overloaded due to 3 cordless and 3 Voip accounts. One of cordless is now an outbound phone only (it can't receive calls) that can select which voip/extention to dial out. The other idea was that there was too many voicemails that were not deleted or saved. These voicemails were stored on Vocalocity servers, not the base unit. But the cordless will still show how many voicemail you have. I started deleting voicemails and keeping my voicemail box more tidy after switching the 3rd cordless to outbound only. In the end its working fine but I'm not sure which one solved it. Hope this helps anyone.

LOOK AND FEELThe color LCD does not have as high of a resolution as I was expecting, but it is very readable. The color scheme can be adjusted so there is a white or black background. I prefer the black background. The handset is small and light, but feels solid. It is about 1/2 inch shorter than my Panasonic DECT cordless phone. The black plastic has a glossy finish. It does pick up fingerprints (not sure about scratches).SETUPI wanted to assign it a static IP address via its MAC address, but I could not find its MAC anywhere on the device. I had to allow my router issue it an address via DHCP to find its MAC address. To configure it, I typed the device's IP address in my browser and it prompted me for a PIN. I don't believe the quick start guide provided me this information. However a quick Google search found it to be "0000".There are a list of 'common' voip providers that you can choose (I assume these are easier to set up). Neither of my two voip providers were on the list. However, it was not hard to find the appropriate settings and input them.SOUNDWow. Yes, it is exactly what I was missing from my previous setup! I have only used ATAs before with an analog cordless telephone connected to it. It always seemed to me that there was something that was not quite right. There would be an annoying delay, or the call clarity was only moderately better than a cell phone. After placing a few test calls, there is not an annoying delay anymore. Also the calls sound much better (and this is using the PSTN with the G.711 codec).RANGEThis was a big disappointment. These phones have a feature called 'ecomode' that cuts the power that each handset can transmit. I have the transmitting base at one end of the house. With ecomode on, I was not able to use the phone from the other end of the house without the audio breaking up (this is only a single story 1200 sq ft house). With the ecomode turned off, I am able to talk inside the house without the audio breaking up. However, as soon as I step a few feet outside the house, the audio breaks up.The DECT panasonic phones that I have will turn off eco mode (and boost the power automagically) when needed. With these phones, I was able to talk 200' away from the base!**I moved the base to about 8' up on the wall. This improved range a little bit, but I am still not able to turn on ecomode and use the phone in the house without the sound breaking up a little.OTHER THOUGHTSAmazon incorrectly lists the phones as using 'AA' batteries. They use NiMH 'AAA' batteries. This is good since it makes the handset smaller and lighter.Although I am using this in a residential setting, it does seem that that each handset is designed to operate independently, in a business environment, as if they were wired SIP phones on different people's desks.**For example, if I want to add a second handset to the conversation, I must 'conference' them in (They can't just pick up their handset and start talking). Each handset's phonebook is private to that handset and entries are not shared. However, you can clone one handset's phonebook to another handset.

The power adapters are made in China and buzz very annoyingly. Other reviews for Gigaset phones have pointed out the same thing, so it's not a real surprise. We exchanged twice through the retailer but the buzzing is always the same. Then I contacted Gigaset support and they pretend they're not aware of the problem. Now they want us to send in not only the power adapter but also the base station. So how are we going to use our phone line in the meantime? Buy another Gigaset? The only reason we're keeping the phone is because the Gigasets are the only Eco-DECT option available in the US though I am considering looking for a better phone in Europe now. Also, when you speak with the loudspeaker on there is some annoying static noise. I do like the menu of the phone, however. It is very easy to use. The menu of the Gigaset A510A is awful.Update October 8, 2012: We are now sending the phone back. Our interactions with the Gigaset customer service were very annoying. They eventually offered to get in touch with their UK office to ask whether they could send us a phone we can use while they have our base station and adapter. Given that we're talking about a cheap power adapter that probably cost them less than $1 and would be very easy to exchange (I would have bought it myself had it been available online), it is not worth the hassle. I also noticed that the Eco-DECT plus function (for which I bought the phone) is not available on the US phones. That means, the phone still emits radiation when not in use. The only thing it does is reduce radiation when you talk and you're close to the base station. Not worth the hassle.

I ordered two of these phones from different sources and have had them for less than a day. I setup one phone in my home and another in my office. An ethernet and phone cable are included, as well as the wall plugs, charger, quick setup guide and a CD with documentation. The handset batteries are Chinese AAA NiMH "700mAh" -- I'll put those through the La Crosse charger at a later date. Out-of-the-box there was a firmware upgrade and that was the first thing I did, the process took about 15 minutes. I had the phone registered to Asterisk 1.6 in a matter of minutes and had no issues with configurationCall quality isn't that great, the Polycom 301 & 501 units these replaced have overall infinitely better call quality. The volume on the Gigaset is rather low even on the highest setting, and there is background noise heard through the handset as well as an occasional pop or click, but nothing major. I expected better, but Polycom is said to be the best for call quality. The base station is small and has two rubber feet on the bottom and two holes for wall mounting (screws not included) on the back. The phone and power plug into the back, but the ethernet cable sticks out of the side, almost as it was an afterthought. The handset feels cheap, but not overly so. The glossy plastic looks nice, but is a fingerprint magnet. When I attempted to hold it between my head and shoulder it did not grip well. The menus are pretty well laid out, I was able to pick up the phone and use it without any documentation (actually didn't even look at that for any part of the setup.) However they can be slow at times. If you are in a call and dialing numbers (e.g. in a typical IVR) it takes almost 1 second to register each keypress, same with dialing off-hook.Overall this phone is nothing amazing but seems like a decent VoIP cordless unit at a decent price. It provides less clutter and cables than having a separate cordless and ATA device. The AAA batteries allow for cheap and simple battery replacement when they eventually go bad. Setup isn't overly complicated and firmware updates are incredibly easy. The call quality is average and long-term reliability has yet to be seen.

I have done a bit of research and want to spread the word out there that this phone is NOT Eco Mode Plus. I was told that these telephones are basicly the same as any standard phone used in America.Gigaset responded the following: "The Eco Mode Plus feature works on a frequency which is already in use by the US military and aircrafts. The frequency is therefore restricted for any manufacturer and this feature had to be disabled for the US and Canadian market."To any USA owners of the Eco Mode telephones - questioning the Eco Mode options, it would be great to know the readings you have received. Has anyone tested them with an EMF reader? Thanks for any info you can pass on...I am hoping that "America" sees the importance of the EMF reduction of our home telephones. It is bad enough with all the cel phones and towers! Gigaset has lead the way....It is up to us to force the issue to make it available here!

Overall, a well engineered and designed product:Setup - Via web browser or CD. I used the browser. Unit supports up to 6 VoIP numbers. You will need to know the parameters for your specific provider, and enter user name, login, host, etc... which you obtain from the VoIP provider web site. Siemens has some pre-defined services as well.If you want to use it with a phone line, the unit supports a single jack. You can use it with any service including POTS/Cable phone, Cellular (via adapter), or with your VoIP provider's ATA.You set up each account separately and decide which extensions (inbound/outbound) work with each account. Unfortunately you cannot set up ringtones centrally. You can also pick the codec (or codecs) you wish to use with each account and set volumes per account too.911 setup us easy too. You can use the POTS or VoIP line as the default. It supports VLANs, certificates, and static or Dynamic IP.Voicemail is included and built in, but can be disabled. A variety of Message Waiting options let you customized how you handle the indicators (network or internal or both)For the handsets, I purchased S79H units. To make a call, you dial and then pick the phone line you wish to use, or select the line and then dial. Call clarity is excellent. The S79H handset includes speakerphone and headset jack, and battery is good for 3-5 hrs of talk. A variety of ringtones are included. You can upload contacts via the gigaset.net web site or enter them manually.Overall, I am very pleased with this unit. It is simpler to set up than a traditional ATA and supports as many lines as a home or small office could possibly need. If you combine it with a bluetooth or wired cell adapter you can call for hours without using your battery. The phones are compact and have a nice feel in your hand, and power consumption is much lower than using an Asterisk system. Most importantly, it lets you use low cost VoIP providers in a convenient format.

I have 3 VoIP providers, two of them are connected on the Gigaset directly (IP1 and IP2). The European VoIP provider I use has a configurator for the the Gigaset and setup could not be easier (select the provider from the list and enter a code provided by the VoIP provider). The third VoIP provider is configured on a Linksys ATA and is connected to the "Fixed Line" connection if the Gigaset.I had 2 older Gegaset S45 handset, so I registered these on the Basestation. One remark, only the main handset allows you to select what provider you want to use to dail out. (could be a limitation of the S45's??).Pros:Easy setupLarge number of tested and pre-configured VoIP listEasy to useCons:None found yet.

Great product. There is an obvious world of difference between this phone (a German made product) and the Chinese wanna be cordless phones. It's easy to program (read the manual first), it has WAAAAY more features than any other cordless phone in this price range (you can even turn the voice mail indicator light on/off on the devices). A feature I really like, is that numbers programmed into a handset (we have 3 of them) do not necessary show up on all phones (if you want you can "send" them to all phones), but these are truly independent devices, so my programmed phone numbers on my handset don't have to mix with my daughter's, but some commonly used numbers everyone can have on all handsets, it's your choice. The build quality is great, the range is great (if you don't put it eco/low radiation mode), again, you get to customize the range/rf output. Adding an additional device to the "network" is very easy, and quick (previous reviewer must have NOT read the manual). You can have custom ringtones for phone numbers, the list of features is long...Far better than any other brand I owned so far (Panasonic, Vtech, Sony included).

I purchased it and powered it on. It connected and automatically started doing some kind of an update. Then it failed completely. The blue light keeps flashing, and the handset won't connect with base set. I called Siemens customer support, and they said that the phone needs to be returned to place of purchase. Now I can understand there was some kind of an auto update and maybe that failed. The unforgivable design flaw is that the base unit has NO RESET BUTTON. If it ever fails during one of it's auto updates (which it appears you have no control over), you are stuck with an expensive paperweight.Amazon was awesome and took it back and paid for shipping both ways with zero questions asked. Amazon rocks!

We bought this phone on Amazon after doing much research about low-radiation cordless phones. We wanted to replace our old wall-hung AT&T cordless phone. After opening the package I realized that this phone does not hang on a standard US wall mount phone bracket. It does not have the matching wall mount brackets. It says you have to put two screws in the wall and mount the phone on those screws. This would look very ugly if you have standard US wall mount plate. We returned the phone. I am sure you can use the phone on a desk just fine. I don't have any opinions on the operation of the phone as we never put it to use. Wanted to make everyone aware of the mounting incompatibility though.

I have been using these hybrid systems for more than 18 months now. Everyone seems to be praising these system at first blush. But, you have to really use them for a while to discover their quirks. You can read my review for the previous version of the product - the S675 IP. That version was completely flawed. They have fixed many of the issues in the new C610A IP. However, a few basic issues still remain. They are as below:1. The built-in answering machine continues to be messed up. Whenever you play back a message on the answering machine, the date displayed is in the European format: DD-MM-YY while the voice over is in American format: MM-DD. So, if you get a message on Oct 8th, the playback says - message received on August 10th. And guess what, starting with the 13th day of the month, the answering machine stops working (given that the internal software knows that months can only go as far as 12). When you try to play back a message that was recorded after the 12th of a given month, the system locks up, the base reboots, and you are not able to either play the message or delete it. The only way to delete these messages is to reset the base. Thankfully, the firmware for this model comes with a restore option that allows you to reapply your previous settings quickly.2. If you are using a corded phone in your house (for your POTS or traditional phone line) in addition to this phone, it will not be recognized by the C610A IP. In other words, if you start a conversation on your corded phone, there is no way for you to pick up the conversation on the C610A IP - short of having the caller call you back or you making a new call on the C610A IP.3. Support and customer service continue to be non-existent. They cannot fix these issues beyond telling you to reboot the system. And in case, you have an issue with your product after the warranty period, Siemens Gigaset asks you to fix it on your own since their support vendor is not contracted to repair out of warranty products. I have experienced this myself with the S675 IP and have it in writing from them. The irony is that no one else outside of Siemens Gigaset can fix these advanced products. If you can live with all of the above issues, this is a good product.

I have two versions of this....the North American version which this is and and Australian version since moving to Perth. The australian version which is on 240V power works perfect. The North American one has a few issues. The main ones are the volume and sound quality. It's not horrible but in today's age of technology I think it is fair to have high expectations. One thing you do need to know is that it is important to have a good router with these units. I was having some registration problems initially which were fixed up quickly when I went to a newer router with QOS (Quality of Service).

When on speaker it is crystal clear and easy to receive the voice.I previously spent over $300 on special equipment from my hearing aid dispenser to enable me to convert the phone call directly into my hearing aids, all to no avail, the sound quality was terrible. No so with this phone, I highly recommend it to anyone that is hard of hearing. The quality of sound is the best out there, we have gone through 3 or 4phones looking for the best quality of sounds and this is it! hands down winner! I want to share this with anyone looking for help to hear on the phone!
