This Epson WorkForce DS-30 Portable Color Document Scanner measures 10-3/4" long, 2" wide, and 1-3/8" high. It is not much bigger than a portable 3-hole punch. It fits into a briefcase or a backpack neatly. In spite of its small size, it does a decent job of scanning originals from 2" x 3-1/2" business cards to 8" x 14" legal size documents. The quality of the scans is comparable to my HP desktop all-in-one scanner/copier/printer. The scan images are clean and clear. They are decent. The resolution is user-adjustable in eight increments, from 75 to 600 dpi, and the images can be in BITMAP, JPEQ, Multi-TIFF, PDF, OR TIFF format. The scanning speed is reasonable - it takes 15 seconds to scan an 8 X 11 document at 200 dpi. Needless to say, it will not scan books or magazines, only papers that can be fed through the scanner slot. This Epson portable scanner draws power from the USB port of the computer via a 60-inch USB 2.0 A-Male to Mini-B cable; no power transformer or cord is necessary.Two software CDs come with the scanner, one for Windows and the other for Apple Mac. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE USER DOES **NOT** CONNECT THE SCANNER TO THE COMPUTER BEFORE OR DURING INSTALLATION OF THE SOFTWARE or the scanner may not work properly. The CDs contain the required Epson scan software and a link to an online user guide, and three optional programs - Document Capture Pro, ABBYY FineReader, and NewSoft Presto! BizCard. (If you do not wish to install the optional programs, uncheck the boxes next to them before hitting the install button.) The online user guide is readable and informative. The user can use the Document Capture Pro to send scanned images by e-mail, print them, or uploading them to a server such as the Cloud (Windows only). He can also scan to a PDF file with the program. (Additional PDF software is required.) ABBYY FneReader is an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) program, which converts a scanned document into editable text. With the Presto! BizCard software, the user can scan business cards and convert them into editable text as well. For further information on these optional programs, see my Footnote below.A black carrying pouch with a draw string comes with the purchase; it has a separate pocket for the USB cable. An accessory kit consisting of a wet cleaning sheet, a dry cleaning sheet, and a calibration sheet is also included. See the user guide on how to use them. This Epson WorkForce DS-30 portable scanner will not replace a desktop scanner but is a useful mobile accessory to a laptop on travel.Footnote: See my comment below for the link to the user guide, which describes the optional programs in more detail.

The Workforce DS-30 is designed as a portable document scanner. I have been using it for the last several months to take with me to the library during genealogy research. It is small enough that I can put it in a backpack and it comes in handy in places where I don't have access to a full scanner. Although it's not as useful as a traditional flatbed scanner, I have used several portable document scanners over the last ten years and I definitely see improvements with this model over the others I've used. I installed it on my laptop and installation was quick and easy. There is a small bit of "bloatware," but not nearly as much as I have seen come with scanners, and even Epson printers, in the past.Epson's Document Capture Pro software is a bit average, and allows you to scan to PDF, but doesn't offer near the options as Acrobat. It also allows you a few fairly limited functions for saving, uploading, and attaching your scanned doc. I prefer using the driver just with Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop to Epson's software. It also comes with ABBYY FineReader as the character recognition software. I have been using this program for years and it works very well. Unless you have a really poor-quality original, the OCR is very intuitive at converting an image to selectable text.The product description states it "Scans a variety of originals -- scans documents up to 8.5" x 14", as well as business cards and plastic I.D. cards." That's true, but not really a "feature." 8.5" is the maximum width of the scanner. The fact that you can scan paper that is 3" longer than 8.5x11 doesn't impress me too much. Scanning speed is quick for a portable scanner, and the auto-feeder guides the paper without any problems (I am always worried about jams when working with old documents). Most of the documents I scan are saved as uncompressed tif images, and scan quality looks great, even though it is advertised as a "document" scanner.I have always thought of Epson as sort of a "middle of the road" hardware company, but over the last two years, their scanners, and especially their Workforce printers, have really impressed me. The DS-30 is a very acceptable portable scanner, and while I definitely prefer my flatbed to it, it works well in a pinch. I wouldn't advise anyone to get it as their main scanner if they will be using it at home a lot, as it is definitely a niche product designed for travel. But if that is your main goal for it, it accomplishes it well.

The Epson WorkForce DS-30 Portable Color Document Scanner is a great addition to your document scanning needs. I said addition because you will still need a flatbed scanner if you do any scanning that is not single sheets. It is sturdily made and fits easily into a briefcase.Installation on my Mac running OS X Tiger was simple enough. All the software comes on an enclosed CD. I installed the entire software suite , which only took about 10-15 minutes. After a quick trip to the Epson website to get an updated driver, you are ready to start scanning. The software install included EPSON Scan, Presto! PageManager 9 Standard, Presto! Biz Card 5, and ABBYY Fine Reader Sprint 8.0.When I migrated to Tiger I lost some functionality with my older Canon scanner because it used Rosetta, but the Epson driver is Tiger ready.EPSON Scan lets you tweak settings (such as orientation, resolution, brightness, contrast) before the scan. You can also change where your scan will be stored on your computer, what format you want the scan to be saved as (JPEG, TIFF, PDF or PICT). You can also have it remove the punch holes on documents that are hole punched. Neat!The scans are quick and are activated by a button on the right side of the scanner. It would be nice if you could feed multiple documents, but it will only allow one document at a time. Once the document is slid into the slot, it will pull it in ready for the scan. It did jam a few times when I tried scanning some photos. Colors on the photos were good and suitable for printing and text on documents was crisp and made for good OCR results with ABBYY Fine Reader. The Presto Page Manager did not fare as well in OCR conversions. This is not the fault of the scanner, however. Receipts also scanned easily and can be stored in the PageManager program. I preferred opening them in Preview and storing them where I wanted on my Mac.When I scanned business cards, BizCard 5 did very poorly reading the data fields.The user guide is accessed online but it is more than sufficient in answering any questions that may arise while using the scanner.The scanner comes with the scanner, storage bag, USB power cable, software CDs, a calibration card and cleaning sheets.Overall the scanner is a great tool for single scans, but the software suite is a little weak.I would rate the scanner a 5, but the software a 3.

I've been using scanners since the 90's when color scanners had to do a three pass scan to get all the color in the final image. It was critical then for me to be able to scan photos and other items for graphic design with as clean an image as possible. Now I still have a flatbed scanner but what a pain to lift the lid, position the image, scan it, remove it, etc. If you have a bunch of items to scan, it's a real pain to keep reinserting items. Since most of my scans are for reference now, it is not as critical to have a super clean, immaculate scan.I previously had a Neat Receipts mobile scanner. The limitations were that it only scanned in grayscale, it was hard to feed documents through and often didn't recognize that I had something loaded to scan.So I was thrilled to be able to get this full color portable scanner. They call it portable but it still needs to run off a computer, it won't scan on the run and store the data until hooked up to a computer. However, it was easy to use, grabbed my documents easily, no matter what the size and pulled them through without trouble. If you put a pile into the slot, it will not pull one at a time but you can feed through multiple pages to be placed in the same document and it prompts you to see if you are done with that batch. There are multiple options for uploading your files to online storage as well.It trims the file automatically and saves it which is good but also not so good. If you want to give it a specific name, you have to go to the file and rename it.But good in that sometimes, you just need to scan quickly and don't want to be interrupted with dialog boxes.It allows you scan multiple documents for a specified "job" giving you the ability to manage receipts and documents based on jobs/customers.It comes with some pretty nifty software, one of which is ABBYY FineReader. This allows you to scan a document and import it to Word or Excel. It then converts the document to text maintaining columns and text size that is then editable. Very cool and will come in handy for me.So far, it's been easy to use and fairly intuitive but you need to buy it for the right reasons - it is not a product like Neat Receipts that will read and classify your receipts but it is not selling itself on that merit. It is purely a product that takes up little desk space, to scan color or black and white documents or photos, and store them on your computer or online.

This little scanner is great. I also own an Epson V300 flatbed, which takes up a great deal of space on my home office desk. The DS-30 is so tiny I can just tuck it in a drawer when I'm not using it, or better still, carry it with my laptop when I am away from home.On my Windows 7 Pro (64-bit), the DS-30 would not function without the drivers installed, even though I already have Epson drivers for my flatbed installed. After installing the drivers, I connected the DS-30 and it worked perfectly. This is a slot fed scanner, as opposed to a rolling scanner that you move down a page, so you do still need a little space to operate it. Just put the top edge of your document into the slot, press the button on top, and the DS-30 feeds it through while it scans.Included in the box is an Accessory Pack, which consists of two single use cleaning clothes (wet and dry), a calibration sheet (I didn't use this), 2 CDs (one for PC and one for MAC) for the drivers and software, and a printed installation guide. There is also a USB cable for connection, and a soft felt drawstring pouch for travel and/or storage. The unit itself is USB powered, so there is no power brick or adapter.Software included (for PC):* Scanner driver -- required for operation* ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint (for OCR) -- scan directly into Word, Excel or as a .pdf* Presto! Bizcard SE (v5.60) -- for scanning business cards into the Presto! Directory softwareThe software does a reasonable job, but is nowhere near 100% accurate. If you don't have any other OCR software, it works in a pinch. Same for Presto! It does a pretty good job of capturing data from a business card, but since there are so many business card designs and layouts, sometimes the information you are trying to capture gets missed. Luckily you can edit your business card directory in Presto!Overall, the Epson Workforce DS-30 is a brilliant little scanner. It's very portable (weighing in under a pound) and it does a good job either on the road, or in your home office. Recommended.

I had highly anticipated the purchase of this scanner after much research. The product seemed to be one of the higher quality portable canners with many of the features I wanted, like t he ability to save directly to the cloud. I decided to get it though a store retailer and when I got it home and attempted to install it, the computer would not recognize the scanner. After numerous attempts, I called tech support (not a toll free number, I might add) and they spent five minutes attempting to set up my customer profile before I politely reminded them that I was calling at my expense and wanted to begin the troubleshooting. Within a few more minutes the technician asked me to examine the usb cord for the necessary number of "pins" that should be in the scanner end of the cord. Sure enough, no pins at all. They said they could ship me a new one in four days. I didn't have that kind of time so I took it back to the retailer. The retailer opened two more units only to find the same problem with the other two usb cords. Hence, I am even afraid to order one online. I had to go with a competitors brand, the brother DS-600-- it can't save to the cloud, but it works. I think what bothered me the most is that the company knew they had a problem (by how quickly they troubleshot it) but has still not done something at the consumer level to solve the problem. Sorry Epson, I don't buy from companies w ho don't admit honest problems.

I bought this little scanner on 12/23/2012, from Amazon, it stopped working on 03/01/2013. I was very impressed when I first got it. Worked just fine and saved me a lot of time filing receipts. For $146 I was expecting it to last a lot longer than 2 months. I called Epson and the closest service center is 35 miles away. I took it there on 03/02/2013. The service center said they would call me in 2 days and let me know what was wrong with the scanner. I called then on 03/07/2013 they said they ordered the parts to fix it but Epson said they would replace it rather than fix it (too bad Epson didn't tell me that when I first called them). The service center said as soon as they receive the new scanner they would test it and call me to come pick it up.

The Epson Workforce 30 is serving me well for the intended purpose. I have so many receipts laying around on any given day. My dining room table is now much clearer than it used to be. It is so simple to scan a receipt through the Epson and then send it to the appropriate file on the computer. I can save it as a JPEG or PDF or BITMAP or TIFF, and it is very easy to adjust the brightness and contrast as well as the size of the scan. I like the fact that I can set it to "Auto" for the size of the paper and it makes my file only as big as the receipt. This feature will save on disc space in the long run.It has a very small footprint and I keep it right next to my laptop, so whenever more paper comes into the house (which it does daily!!) I now just scan it, file it, and shred the original. (some documents I do still keep a hardcopy)I am now working on cleaning out my 4 drawer file cabinet!It does not bother me that it only scans one side, since about 80-85% of the documents I scan are only one sided, and when I do encounter the occasional 2-sided document, it doesn't take that long to just hit the "add a page" button and keep going with the scan.I had no issues at all with set up, worked right out of the box (must install software first).I am very pleased with its performance and ease of use.

Like many on-the-road business people I always travel with my "office in a bag." My laptop computer, iPad, Canon portable i90 printer, etc., etc. When I received an opportunity to get this product I had to stop and think "Do I really need one more thing to lug through airports, taxis and hotel lobbies? The answer is, yes, I really do.When I first started to carry a small printer on my trip I was very surprised at how often I used it and how convenient it was. Boarding passes, emails, product spec sheets, maps, all could now be printed out anytime and anywhere that I wanted. Now that I have my portable scanner my experience has been almost the same. I almost can't imagine being without one now.I work in a competitive industry and my home office expects those of us on the field to be their eyes and ears. Now, if I see a brochure for a new product from a competitor I can scan it, sheet by sheet, and send it to the home office the same day that I found it.The software could be better as it took a long time to load, but once that was done it was fairly easy to figure out. I like to save scanned documents as JPEGS since it is easy to doctor them if I need to. The quality of the scans are very good, not stellar, but very good. The unit itself is so small that I hardly notice that I have it. All in all I am very pleased with this item and recommend it often to my co-workers and customers.

First, let me say that our business relies heavily on a scanner. We are currently using a Fujitsu fi-6130Z to scan everything from federal documents to drivers licenses.That faster scanner work great in the office; but, we haven't really had a good solution when we're on the road - until now...The Epson WorkForce DS-30 is exactly what we've been looking for! Here are the things we love about it:- It is highly portable, and comes with a very nice little bag to haul it around in. It's easily small enough to just dump in a laptop bag.- It feels very durable. This is a product that doesn't feel like it's going to break if you handle it roughly.- It scans everything from documents to drivers licenses with no problems at all! It does take just a tiny boost to get a drivers license started; but, once it's going, it goes right through.- It is powered by the USB port. I was worried that it would require its own power brick - but all it has is a single USB cable (which is provided).- The interface is extremely simple. All you do is press the button and it scans the document that's inserted. I have found that I have to be patient and wait a few seconds in some cases - but that could very well be the laptop instead of the scanner.- The scan quality is very good for what it is. This isn't going to win any quality awards when compared to a good flat-bed scanner; but, what sheet-fed scanner will?Seriously, this is exactly what we've needed - and I suspect many other businesses are in the same situation. Don't expect this to be a heavy-duty office or home scanner; but, you can rely on it to do some good scanning on the road.Overall, I highly recommend this for anyone who needs a good, solid, portable scanner.

I take this with me when visiting family so I can scan old family photos. There are an awful lot of us, and the kiddie photos just got scattered to the wind. Mom took pictures, but she just stuffed them in shoe boxes.So now I have images of several hundred, while my sibs still have their hard copies. And they have images of mine.Their favorite is the 1963 photo of me on Santa's lap!

Purchased this to go at my studio and it is the perfect size, great quality and easy to use. I did have to go online to download the software because the CD that comes with it was older than the version of OS-X i have on my Mac, but that took only a few minutes. If you are looking for something compact that can scan any size from legal, receipts to business cards, i would definitely recommend the Epson.

I purchased this scanner to scan receipts for my business. It is much faster then the flat bed scanner I was using. The quality of the scan is not great, but then again I'm not that savy with machinery so I may be able to get better quality with some adjustments. That being said, it does the job I need it to.

This is a wonderful scanner! It comes in a small box, so small I first thought to "something is missing here."Unpacking it is easy, has everything you need.Runs on Windows 7 (what I'm using), also works on Win Vista, Win XP SP 2, and WIN XP Pro, and Mac. And some others I'm not sure about (see directions).And it comes with a carrying bag for storage, travel, etc. The bag is a nice touch and would be something one would need to purchase it didn't come with it.The standard scanner CD's, guide and calibration cleaning sheets are included as well.Installation is straight forward. Put in the CD and away you go.I don't know about anyone else here. But for me I want a scanner to scan documents. Be it email them or keep online or whatever, I just need them scanned. This scanner does everything, AND IN COLOR that those large bulky scanners do.Remember those days when you'd travel and need a scanner, asking the hotel if they had one or looking for a store or friendly business? Well no more with this.It's so small, it can easily fit inside a carry on luggage bag. Or a PC travel bag.Thick letterhead paper goes through easy. I scanned a credit card and it went through. All scanned well.For use at home, it takes up no room at all. It is really small, and does the same job those large scanners do. And it's fast.For me this does all I want and more. Scans, gives color, and is light and small.I could not be happier with a scanner.

A friend brought over his NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System and we did a side-by-side comparison on our Macs.First of all, I liked the Epson packaging that includes a microfiber soft sleeve with separate slot for the cord (which comes with a velcro wrap), and wet/dry/calibrating sheets. The size and weight of the Epson scanner is similar to the NeatReceipts; both are USB-powered.The Epson software - all 5 programs - installed without a hitch, and the scanner was easily added to the network. Papers, cards, and calibration sheets fed easily.After this, it all went downhill. The software is a grab-bag of programs, with no central unifying control panel. The Presto! software is so bad, it doesn't even recognize the scanner; the company is apparently based in the UK, and the business card reader offers Palm, Now Contacts, and Filemaker among its import/export choices. It failed to parse the business cards I tried. NeatReceipts was able to scan receipts, parse business cards, drag and drop text into address fields to fine-tune the OCR, and click to file documents, all within one program. None of this is available with the Epson. And forget about the "cloud," which is only available to Windows users.I can see the usefulness of this mini scanner on the road, or for a quick scan of assorted documents. If you plan to use this as the basis of a digital filing system - as my friend does - I'd definitely go for the NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner. Good software really makes the difference in this case.

Things We Love About This Scanner:+ Great scans - high resolution, no distortion+ Slot feed+ Powered from USB+ Scans docs up to 8.5" wide, 14" long+ Auto detects document size+ Resolution up to 600dpi+ Nice selection of software included.+ Quick and quiet, took about 35 seconds to scan a 8.5x11" documentThere were 2 installation CDs in the box, one for windows and another for macs. I have win 7 and installation took about 10 minutes, requiring very little input from me. I liked that no pestering messages appeared asking me register. The main software is very basic, you just open it and configure your scans. A nice selection of 3rd party software is also included for which installation is optional.The scans can be started from the scanner or the PC via the scanner software. After scanning a few documents, we were really impressed with the results. The images were very clear and the colors were true and deep. The slot feed worked well, there was no slippage on anything. It was quick and quiet. Although we found we had to be careful getting the document started. If we angled it just a little bit then the resulting image would be slanted. Also, since it is a slot feed, you can't scan book or magazine pages.The scanner comes with a pouch, albeit a cheap one. The USB cable can be made to fit in the pouch with it but it's not easy. The scanner is so small though, it slides easily into a laptop bag.

The only challenge in purchasing on-line is not being able to really see the item. I wanted a scanner that I could hold by hand to scan legal sixed docunments and/or ledger books. This one requires that you feed the document through it, so I am not able to scan ledger and/or minute books.

It'll work great in the field but if you are looking for one in the office then this one may not be the one. It is a little slower because it uses the power from the USB cable. I use it at my desk for the occaionsal scan that I do and it works fine. The software is user friendly and the scans are very clean.

I absolutely love my portable scanner. It was a snap to get the CD installed and it has been such a blessing being able to archive a lot of important documents without accumulating huge amounts of paper.

Has any one sent you a document or contract by email and asked you to sign and fax it back or scan and email it back? And you are handicapped because you have to wait until you get home or the office to use your scanner. If this is you, then this product is for you.No longer do I waste precious time to respond. This portable scanner has turned my laptop bag into a complete office on the move. Get one and you will not regret it.The image quality is amazing and besides you can edit it.I have a 14 inch screen ultra thin laptop and yet this scanner is just 80% as wide as my laptop. This is one of the greatest products of the decade. At last some of James Bond's toys is being made available to ordinary folks at very affordable price !

This is so nice and small and does the job! Documents come out clear and it has been very easy to feed the legal size papers through with no problem. I use it mostly for work, but plan to use it for my own personal items as well. Very happy with this purchase.

I bought this scanner from amazon deals. It works what I wanted it to do. I usually scan few documents and converted it to pdf format to send thru email. Highly recommended.

the scanner is good quality and does what i need it to, BUT i could not install the bundled software onto my iMac running Mountain Lion. kind of a pain, had to install onto my older macbook pro, but not a huge problem. overall, i would recommend this to anyone who, like me is trying to reduce clutter and needs to scan receipts, torn out recipes, notes, etc.
