This is a good basic bus-powered (no power brick) sheet-fed scanner suitable for anyone who needs to scan documents away from their office or home.It is compatible with the scanner driver built into Mac OS since the later versions of Snow Leopard (10.6). You can do basic scans and create PDF's without installing the Epson software that comes with the scanner (plug the scanner into to a USB port on your Mac, open the Preview application, choose Import From Scanner on the File menu, the Epson DS-30 should be on the pop-out list). If you use the installation disc that come with the DS-30 it installs:Epson Scan - Scanning software that gives you a lot more control over your scans than the scanner software built into OSX.Presto! PageManager Standard - document management software that, among other things, lets you split or merge PDF documents.Presto! BizCard 5 - dedicated software for scanning and parsing the information on business cards.ABBYY Fine reader- Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software used to convert scanned documents into editable text. The DS-30 physically resembles the NeatReceipts scanner. I tried the DS-30 with the Neat software. It worked one time out of several attempts; in the other cases, the software did not recognize the scanner. It is somewhat faster than my four-year old Neat scanner on ordinary scanning tasks.I installed all of the software and verified that it all worked with Mac OS 10.7 Lion. I did use the ABBYY OCR software a few times, enough to conclude that you will get decent results scanning reasonably legible documents at higher resolutions (no surprise there). You end up editing virtually any document scanned with consumer scanners and software. The ability of the software to correctly read a business letter increased dramatically going from 200 to 400 dpi, reducing the number or errors from two or three dozen to five or fewer. The only software I spent a significant amount of time using was Presto! BizCard. I have a box with a couple of hundred business cards I've received over the past few years, so I picked out about 50 to try with the software. I tried to find as many design variations as possible. I've included more information about that experience below.I scanned over 50 business cards and about two dozen other documents with the DS-30 and found the results to always be acceptable for a document scanner. The Epson WorkForce DS-30 Portable Document Scanner is a good choice for those who travel and need a decent basic scanner for gathering documents instead of lugging them around until you get back to your home base. It's also worth considering for a home office or dorm situation where space is extremely limited and you have a need for a basic scanner.-----------------------Scanning Business CardsThis is slightly off-topic, but I think worth passing along.BizCard was quite adept at identifying information and putting it in the correct data field. It also saves an image of the card so you can edit the data without having to keep the card. Looking at the results, there are some clear lessons to be learned about designing business cards in an age when a lot of people will just scan them and toss them :- Never, ever, set type on a diagonal. It did not matter if the card had a horizontal or vertical orientation, but any type on a diagonal was ignored.- If your company uses a logotype that distorts or joins letters, spell out the company name elsewhere, possibly as part of the physical address.- Group the elements logically: name, job title, & department; street address, city, state, postal code, & country; email address & web site url; phone numbers. Put each component on a separate line. The software understood most of the common words for differentiating phone numbers (Office, Mobile, Cell, Fax, etc.) and parsed the numbers accordingly.-Avoid using dashes, bullets, or small logos in or near any typesetting; it may try to interpret them as part of the text if there is too little space between the object and words or numbers (hyphens within phone number are OK).-Kern carefully, if at all. While kerning (removing space between individual letters) can produce results more pleasing to the human eye, to the scanning software it creates letter pairs that may not read correctly.- Don't spell out your phone number with letters; it will be ignored.- You can leave off "http://," but if you leave off "www," your web site url will be ignored.-Colored objects and even photos are OK in the background as long as there is sufficient contrast between the background and the type.-Surprisingly, the most common problems involved names and company names. For these critical items, use legible typefaces that are not significantly out of proportion to the other information on the card. Avoid drop caps, heavy (extra bold) fonts, and the use of any kind of symbol on the same line.

Note: After using this unit a bit, I have downgraded my rating from 4 stars to 3 stars. This is based on the price of the unit, the very clunky and extremely user-unfriendly software, and the fact that it scans most black and white photos very, very poorly. When I unboxed the Epson WorkForce DS-30 scanner, I was immediately struck by the fact that it looks almost identical to my NeatReceipts mobile scanner. The Epson DS-30 has a carbon fiber look to it while my 2-3 year old NeatReceipts scanner is white, but other than that, the size and appearance are virtually identical. In fact, I've uploaded a photo of the two units positioned side-by-side so you can see for yourself (see customer photos on Amazon's main product page). So they look similar and the prices are similar as of this writing, but are these scanners similar in performance and which one is better? The answer is not nearly as simple as I thought it would be. Both scanners are quite different in many ways and which one is "better" would depend on your needs. As I mentioned, my NeatReceipts scanner is 2-3 years old, but the tech fellow told me that the specifications are "similar" to the current model. I have upgraded the NeatReceipts software to the current version. The Epson scanner is fast and efficient. The output is very clean and professional-looking. If you wanted to scan documents that would be used over and over again, this might be a good choice. It's excellent if you need to scan a document fast and then e-mail it to someone. You can quickly e-mail directly from Epson's software and it will access Outlook quickly. I could scan and e-mail a document in less than a minute from beginning to end. So it's very efficient in that regard.Do bear in mind that NeatReceipts can sync with Outlook and add contacts and such. While that's a nice and useful feature, I didn't see a simple way to e-mail directly from the NeatReceipts software. If I missed that option, someone please let me know in the comments area and I'll update the review accordingly. The Epson DS-30's scanned image is often superior to the NeatReceipts image. It's somewhat close, but I don't think I'd use most of the NeatReceipts images if my intention was to use a scanned document over and over or post it to a website. Sometimes, the NeatReceipts' images look wrinkled and/or tilted. The Epson's images seem a lot cleaner. The software can also automatically straighten the scanned image and you can also remove punch holes and such. The Epson software is pretty flexible but somewhat poor in terms of user-friendliness. You will create various "jobs" that tell it how to save or where to send the scanned image and in what format. While their software works pretty well, I do think Epson could clean up the software to make it more intuitive.I also like the fact that the Epson software allows you to scan directly to the cloud. I set up a "job" so that the scanned image was sent directly to Google Docs and it worked perfectly. The image looked great and the upload was very fast. Again, the software isn't super-intuitive, but once you've figured things out it's relatively simple. The NeatReceipts mobile scanner is quite different from the Epson DS-30 in many respects. It will scan your documents in a similar fashion to the Epson, but it will also read and "understand" some of your receipts, business cards, and documents and then it will file and organize them by category. So if you are scanning a receipt, NeatReceipts' software will fill out most of the information on your database automatically. If you scan a business card, it will create a contact file showing the person's name, company, phone number, etc. You can save this information to various sub-folders of your choosing and sync with other applications. Generally, it stores all information and scanned documents and information in a "cabinet" which has the primary sub-folders of receipts, documents and contacts. You can create sub-folders of your choosing as well. You can also create expense accounts or other databases and export the information to TurboTax, Excel, Outlook and other applications. As mentioned, NeatReceipts' image quality is sometimes inferior to that of the Epson WorkForce DS-30, but I have a feeling that's more about the software than the hardware. So which portable document scanner is better? I don't think there's a clear answer. NeatReceipts can do things that the Epson scanner cannot. It can read and "understand" the data on your receipts and documents and create reports from that data. It doesn't always get it right by the way, so you need to review what is saved, but generally it does a pretty solid job.But I think that NeatReceipts is not nearly the pure scanner that the Epson is. If I owned a company and I was placing scanned images or documents on the web, I'd use the Epson DS-30 because the output is often nicer in appearance. Also, the Epson can scan and upload to the cloud where NeatRece

First up the packaging. The box seems a little wide considering how relatively skinny or thin the scanner itself is but then you quickly realize that the package also has to contain the driver/software installation disc and a readable user's guide and then it makes more sense why the box is as wide as it is. The packaging opened up easily enough, even without being flagged as "frustration free", though a minor frustration was encountered once the package was opened as I started looking for the "read me first" type note that I expected I might find. As it turned out, I had to pull out the small folder labelled "Accessory Kit" and look within it to find the documentation which was in turned hiding behind one of the two enclosed discs that had apparently slid around slightly during shipping. The discs were apparently stacked on top of the documentation when the package was assembled in the factory, or so I would assume. I guess that's an acknowledgement that most people would simply head for the disc first and not actually bother to try to read or follow any written instructions ;-)The accessory kit, once unfolded, also includes a pair of cleaning sheets, one meant for Wet use, one for Dry use, along with a Calibration Sheet. The inclusion of the Calibration Sheet worries me a little as I fear what I would need to do if I were to misplace the accessory kit and no longer be able to find the Calibration Sheet. I would hope and presume that I could download a new copy of the Calibration Sheet from the manufacturer's website, but I've learned ages ago to (at least try to) never assume anything. So, I proceed to checking the "Start Here" document that I had expected to find (I know, I know, I just said I should never assume anything, but I did assume I'd find such a document and was pleased to find it as expected). It's the typical "Read these instructions before using your product" type document though I note one small oddity, it seems to be folded "backwards" with it laid out to open from left to right, rather than from right to the left as most folded documents would tend to open. Forgive that OCD moment as I proceed... Ok, as continued to be expected, I'm supposed to install the software first *before* connecting the USB cable and connecting the scanner to my computer (this device could be used with either Mac's or PC's, so I've used the more generic term there just in case a Mac user were to wonder about using this product). Oddly enough, I don't see any warning label on the plastic bag/wrapping around the USB cable and I would have expected that to be there if I'm really not supposed to just install the cable and go on about my business. Perhaps the manufacturer will add a sticker or other warning notice there in the future. And so I begin the installation of the software (still not having connected the cable yet). Hmm, a small quirk perhaps, the first time I started the Setup.exe program (as I have Autorun turned off on my computer) it acted as if it was running but then did nothing. No splash screen, etc. I started it again and on the second try I got the typical splash screen that offered a choice of 4 different languages and from there I could proceed. Meanwhile a pop-up came up saying that the software might not have installed correctly. I assume that was on the previous try that I never saw the splash screen for.I choose English for the language for setup and proceed. From there I get a more detailed set of options that offers a choice of "Custom" install or just "Install". Install would install a bunch of choices including the Epson Scan software, Document Capture Pro, ABBYY FineReader, NewSoft Presto! BizCard and Epson User's Guide link. I go along for the default install though I question whether I need all of these various features for my normal usage of this scanner. (Then again, more is always better, right? and really, it's not like these features should be in my way, just using a little harddrive space on my computer.) Typical End User License agreement that details that if I don't use the software as intended I could be starting the end of civilization as we know it appears. Given the choice to Accept or Exit, I figure I better Accept so the installation proceeds. The installation continues with out much of a progress bar. Instead the same software list that was seen on the prior screen is shown, at least for a while, before the setup process actually gets going and an installation progress bar is finally shown. Slow process apparently. Just the process of installing the main component (Epson Scan) takes a while as I see the install progress bar pop-up repeatedly with various sub-components being installed. The Document Capture Pro install flies by quickly, and eventually ABBYY FineReader installs and so on. The Presto! BizCard 5 software install is the only glitch that I might note as that installation prompted me to again choose my preferred language and click Next to

First things first: This is not a portable "wand" scanner, i.e. a scanner you can wave/roll over things like books or whatever, and store images for use later.Instead, this is a slot loaded document scanner. It scans documents through a thin slot. The documents have to be flat, but can be somewhat rigid. The maximum width is 8.5", and the maximum supported length is 14".Basically, this scanner can scan standard and legal sized pieces of paper, and paper sheets smaller than that.It CANNOT scan books or any other document that won't fit in that slot. There are portable scanners that can do that, and they look something like this. So it's good to get that out of the way.In addition, this scanner is NOT self powered, and it does NOT have onboard memory. You MUST plug this scanner into a PC/laptop (Windows and Mac both supported with the included install CDs). So this is hardly a solution you'll stick in your back pocket or your purse.OK, so much for the limitations. How is this at what it does? The answer: Very good. In my tests, I tried single sheets of 8.5x11 paper, 2 sheets at once (double thickness), sheets that were somewhat crumpled, a business card, a birthday card, and a thin round drink coaster. The scanner handled all of them without problem (though the drink coaster had to be supported until it started to go through the scanner). All documents came out the way they went in, with no mis-handling, and no added wrinkles in the documents due to the scanner. I found the text scanning quality to be excellent and completely sufficient for standard optical character recognition using the included Abbyy Finereader 9.0 Sprint software (for Windows). The resolution of the scanned document can be varied up to 600dpi, which is more than sufficient for both OCR and for scanning full color images for repurposing. The image can be scanned to .jpg, .tiff, .bmp, or .pdf.In terms of color documents: The quality was very good, and I was surprised at the lack of moire effects in the output images. I found the colors to be good, vibrant, and quite deep, but sometimes slightly off, especially in the region of purples and blues. Skintones were close to dead on.By default, the software suit installs so that images are scanned at a lower resolution to a .pdf file by default. But these defaults are easily changable through an options panel.Scanning time was not bad, taking about 45 seconds to do a full color 600dpi scan of an 8.5x11 document. The software suite that is included is sufficient: A couple of Epson scanning programs (including one that auto activates when you press the scan button on the physical scanner), a limited version of the excellent (in its full form) Abbyy Finereader (9.0 Spirit) OCR program, and a business card reader (NewSoft Presto! BizCard). (Abbyy is replaced by NewSoft Page Manager if you are installing on a Mac). The Abbyy program should be more than sufficient for OCR of standard text documents. It is probably too limited if your intent is to take complex layout originals and reproduce the entirety of layout in your captured document. But for capturing blocks of text or numbers, it's more than adequate. The user's guide is online--not terrible, but annoying. There are hooks in the scan capture program that allow you to direct your scans to cloud locations like Google Documents and Evernote, as well as to standard destinations on your local hard drive.Overall, this is a nice tool, although the slot loaded nature of it limits who this will be useful for. The scan quality is good, and it's reasonably fast. This will not replace the value of a good flat bed scanner, and I found that while the color images it scanned were surprisingly good and deep looking, the colors did tend to be somewhat off in the purple/blue end of the spectrum. If you're a road warrior who needs to scan documents, I can't imagine you'll do better than this. If you're looking for something for the office, on the other hand, and can afford the bigger footprint of a flat bed scanner, one of Epson's flat bed scanners in the similar price range offers more flexibility and quality that's at least as good. The package includes the scanner, a usb cable, software install CDs, a calibration card, a couple of cleaning sheets, and an inexpensive bag/case for the scanner.

There's a lot to like in this compact little Epson WorkForce DS-30 Portable Color Document Scanner, and it's not just its small size. But although my first impressions were that it was a solid workhorse in a small package, it didn't hold up with the test of time, and became an exercise in frustration, putting it simplySimple points first...Pros:+ Compact and lightweight, yet a very solid feel overall+ Real 600 dpi resolution; nice image quality+ Scans 8? x 11 and legal size documents and even business cards & receipts+ Excellent auto size detection; handles business cards with ease+ Light weight; just over ? pound+ Scans directly to the cloud; no problem with Google Documents+ Good text enhancement; does OCR quite well+ USB-powered; no batteries or power cord neededCons:- Software is very sketchy; sometimes just doesn't work- USB issues; sometimes connects, other times it doesn'tFirst impressions:Right out of the box it was easy to see that this Epson WorkForce DS-30 scanner is a tight little product. It's well packaged, and inside is the scanner itself, a USB cable with a Velcro strap, a simple carry bag with a drawstring closure, two installation CDs (1 PC and 1 Mac), some calibration and cleaning sheets and a setup guide. That guide stated that it was important to not install the USB cable until the software was installed, and I did that. Inserting the CD and following the directions was an easy process.Regarding the CDs, one is for Windows 7, Vista and XP variants; the other is for Mac OS X 10.5.6, 10.6x and 10.7x. It's also advisable to check online for any software updates are available from Epson. Though I will use this primarily with a MacBook Pro, I installed it on a Windows 7 notebook as I've upgraded the OS on the Mac.In Use:On the PC, a 'WorkForce DS-30 User's Guide' shows up after the installation. I followed the online guide and ran the calibration sheet, and all was smooth and painless. In operation I tried scanning first a few 8? x 11 printed documents and a then couple that were 'chicken-scratched' notes from a legal size worksheet with handwritten notes, and each worked smoothly as expected. I tried a few business cards and then a couple of receipts. The receipts were flimsy, so care should be exercised, the same thing that I found with my older NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner that has been in use for almost three years. There was no problem with scanning documents directly to the cloud once the online directions were followed, and I ran a few of them to Google Documents. The auto size detection worked properly, and the OCR text enhancement was good enough that I could easily create a few PDF files with ease, when the software wasn't acting up. It handles color reasonably, though I'll be tweaking some of the images - that was to be expected. This diminutive scanner is decent for general home office use when using it on the Windows 7 PC, and it takes up just a small amount of desk space. It does a better job than my older HP flatbed scanner, but my older NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner does a better job overall, putting it simply. This Epson WorkForce DS-30 Portable Color Document Scanner does black & white, color, OCR, and does it in a small, solid and lightweight package. It does what I need and does it well when it doesn't have USB or software issues on the Windows 7 PC. But when I ran it on the Mac (OS X 10.8.x), the USB issues really showed up. It works OK on the PC about 75-80% of the time, but reboot your computer first. On the Mac I've gone back to using the NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner.Your results may vary.4/19/2012

This peripheral appears potentially most beneficial to users who have identified a need for a mobile scanning device for documents and images no larger than a legal size letter. The Workforce DS-30 is very similar in appearance and form factor the Neatreceipts mobile and Iris Express scanners although I believe robust differences in functionality exist between the Epson and Neatreceipts (I haven't tried the Iris).Neither Neatreceipts nor DS-30 will accommodate on the fly scans of books and larger images as each requires front slotted feeds of documents no larger than 8 ? by 14, unlike wand type mobile scanners where small sections of text in can be segregated.Like Neatreceipts, the DS-30 requires USB connection to a laptop or PC for information storage and device powering. Frankly, I would have been more impressed if it employed rechargeable batteries and a wireless dongle similar to many of Logitech's mice and keyboards. The scanner comes with a microfiber cover with interior pocket for storage of the usb cable, along with callibration sheets, wet/dry cleaning sheets and installation CD.Express installation from the CD took about 15 minutes . Acquisition of updated drivers, as recommended, from Epson's website added another 15 minutes to the process. The CD also includes Epson Scan software, Document Capture Pro, Abbyy Fine reader and Presto Biz Card 5 as well as a link to the online user guide. If desired, any or all of the supplemental applications can be excluded by opting to do a custom installation. Personally I found enough value in each of the programs to justify installation...as long as the user is willing to invest a bit of time to become familiar with what I also found to be rather convoluted interface designs.Initial calibration (which may not have been necessary) added another 2-3 minutes. The device lacks a dedicated power switch and is active as long as it is linked to a computer. The top side positioned button is one way to initiate scans and can be customized to a degree. One major deficiency is the lack of coordination with between supported applications. The user either has to access them via all programs button or potentially further clutter the desktop with short cut icons. And, while I noted I found some of the features of the applications useful (like mapping of addresses from business cards via Mapquest hyperlink) it will take a while to become comfortable with the non-intuitiveness of each. I don't use any cloud services so the capability of streamlined upload was of little importance to me.I do use NeatReceipts filing system and Outlook contacts. I haven't to date discovered an easy way to transfer business card info to Outlook with the DS-30 nor would it accommodate receipt management anywhere near as impressively as the other unit. And I recognize it was not meant to.I found the OCR feature to be above average and resolution for both grayscale and color were more than acceptable, definitely superior to the Neatreceipts scanner(s). I did encounter a repetitive jamming problem where unless the document was fed perfectly square it would bind up. The device does not support two-sided copying and, not surprisingly, requires user intervention for each scan request. While not timed, I am confident the DS-30 is faster than my NeatReceipts desk model.Essentially, if tasked exclusively for mobile scanning needs, I believe the Epson is better device for document and most definitely image, reproduction. However, if I'm going to carry around another device to really enhance my offsite needs, I'll stick with Neatreceipts.

I could keep this review really short, but I don't want to shortchange you. In short, buy the Fujitsu Scansnap S1100 instead of this scanner. The price is almost identical and it is better in almost every way.Having come from the Fujitsu SCANSNAP S1100 CLR 600DPI USB Mobile Scanner (PA03610-B005), I have to be blunt: This scanner is disappointing. Amazon sent this one to me to review, possibly because I had such a well received review on the Scansnap S1100. The S1100 is a high standard to meet, and while I had some initial excitement about this Epson, it felt short on all marks, and it's almost the same price.Let me count the ways that this scanner is inferior to the S1100, and share with you the single time I think this scanner may be chosen over the S1100.The software for this scanner is very limited, packaged with a Winzip tool and while small, is slow to inform you when the install is complete. It goes out to Windows Update to check on its status, which takes a while, requires a reboot, and afterward opens with very limited options. It has no option to scan multiple pages continually. It has limited output naming options. While the software is simple, it doesn't meet my expectations. The times I tried to scan a business card, it would never sense the card was ready. The times I tried to do multiple page scans, it would scan half the second page, and tell me there was a feed error (because the software thought I was scanning a single page that was too long. A known epson software reaction). The scan quality of this scanner is poor. The scans of text and graphics were blurry and looked "over softened". Yes, there are some software adjustments, but from out of the box performance, unsatisfactory. The scanner is slower than the S1100.The scanner requires that pages be face-down. When you have a stack of paper beside you, it's inconvenient to have to turn each page over, run it through, then turn it over again. This is something that Fujitsu got right on the S1100 and Epson got wrong on this. The scanner does not flip open. This is the one saving grace of the scanner. For someone who is extremely hard on equipment, the doors that open on the S1100 are probably likely to break. This has no external doors or moving parts, so Epson got that right-- no moving parts. On the downside, you can't really open it up to clear a paper shred or something like that. Maybe it wouldn't be necessary. So in summary, don't buy this scanner. I applaud Epson for making an effort in this space, but they've got a lot of learning to do before they have a product that's competitive with anything else out there.*update* I see that a few people found this review unhelpful. If you could please comment on how I could make it more helpful (and keep it honest) I'd appreciate your feedback.
