I expected that these speakers would be ok for that purpose once in a while.
Boy was I surprised! I found that listening to Mozart's clarinet concert I was filled with Man's desiring, and a new appreciation for life due to the clarity of low frequency response I did not expect from 4" bass drivers!
Needless to say I am very pleased with this purchase and highly recommend these speakers for people who enjoy similar pursuits.
- Performance/Price
- Aesthetics
- Loud Volume
- Handling of Singular Tones
- Bass+Treble Adjustment
Cons:
- Lack of Low-End Bass
- Noisy Soundstage
- Bluetooth Always On
This speaker set aims to please from the get-go. From the unboxing to the first glimpse of the gorgeous faux-walnut to the ease of setup, the R1700bt is flawless in those regards. Volume levels went from whisper quiet to neighbour-waking loud, so no complaints there either. However, that was where the fun ended as some odd frequency response could be heard when different tracks were played. After about a 5-hour burn in, the sound signature settled down enough for an audition. For the remainder of this review, I will focus on my experience with the sound quality as I don't care much about other factors such as aesthetics or packaging when I purchase speakers.
First thing I noticed was the very sibilant and bright highs and vocals. The closest thing that I've heard to this is the virtual surround effect that some DACs offer. It's not an unpleasant effect when used in moderation and I think Edifier did a great job here. Vocal tracks were stunning for a <$200 speaker set. For pure vocals, the R1700bt beat every other computer speaker I've ever owned/auditioned: Edifier E3200, Simple Audio Listen, Fluance Fi30, Logitech Z533, and Tivoli Model Two. Secondly, the volume went much higher than I would likely ever play my music even in a largish 60ft2 room. The last thing about the R1700bt that put a smile on my face was the openness of the sound when tuned to -2 Treble/-4 Bass. There was very little box-like boominess, which is just the way I like it. It allowed the music to really be turned up without distortion.
However, after noting those strengths of the speakers, I also noticed several glaring weaknesses that no other review mentioned (even so-called professional reviews online). The first and most obvious is the complete lack of low-end bass; by which I mean <60hz. To challenge any of those aforementioned reviewers, I ask for them to please simply play "The Imperial March" from the ubiquitous Star Wars series. When I read all those reviews that stated "very nice", "strong", "full" bass, I expected the bass to at least beat the Tivoli Model Two 2.0 system that employs only single 3" drivers. But after just the first 30 seconds of "The Imperial March", I realized either all those reviewers didn't listen to any orchestral music with large drums or my speaker set is broken. "The Imperial March" became "The Imperial Walk" with barely any of the deep bass making its way to my ears. Much MUCH worse than my Model Two with their 3" drivers.
The second significant flaw that those "professional" reviewers failed to mention was the utter mess of the soundstage. Both the Tivoli and Fluance Fi30 handily beat the Edifier R1700bt when it came to highlighting the melody/focal point of the muscial score and separating the different harmonic parts into their individual strands. What actually came out from the R1700bt when compared to those speakers sounded more akin to a 2D painting with a cacophony of sound all intermixed and unrelated to each other. After some more careful listening, I believe this is in part due to the R1700bt having a flatter response curve than the Tivoli or Fluance and thus giving each instrument/vocal more of an equal representation. Whether this is good or bad is subjective: for me, I want to enjoy my music and not be distracted with overly harsh cymbals or annoying sizzles and pops from the accompaniment. Nonetheless, the result is a soundstage that is unable to "place" each instrument/vocal on the stage at all; everything comes out as one unit.
Before I conclude this review, I feel the need to emphasize that I DO like these speakers even with most of my review devoted to pointing out flaws. Hence the 4 star rating. However, it is even MORE important to add "for the price" to this conclusion. These are great speakers for the price, which I feel is what most reviews gloss over. No, the sound is NOT "golden", "perfect", or even close to "joyous" on an absolute value. It is merely wonderful for the lack of better competition. I know what good sound sounds like: B&W 802 hooked up to Moon NEO DAC and custom tube amp serves as my reference. Of course I don't expect a $200 bookshelf speaker set to come even remotely close to that setup. But for me to state that the R1700bt has solid bass, full mids, and clear/crisp highs would be a blatant lie. Kudos if you have reached this point of this review! My parting words for you will be to not expect much better sound that what this speaker set costs; there is no miracle yet.
have been spoilt by my earlier logitech setup (miss the subwoofer and low thundering sound). For the purpose I bought them (listening to music), they do justice and go beyond. Love them. Should you buy them? My Answer - Hell yeah!
Date : 10th November 2019
I have been listening them for more than 1.5 years. The sound quality is still fantastic and no problem at all. Most people who come home, and if I like them enough, I give them a demo of these incredible set of speakers and all I get in return is mesmerised faces! Thank you Edifier for making this possible.
I'll keep updating this review.
for 2 to 3 hours a day if possible now if you are planning to buy this then i can tell you go for it but still ifeel my responsibility to tell who should
buy them and who should not .

now
the cons
1.actually there are no cons if you ask me but if i have to say then it would be in some songs i have heard extra bass or trebble but i am good with that
as there are to knobs one for bass and one for treeble which is great again.
verdict.these speakers are not for out site use yes you can use for small get togather at your garden as i do and 62rms will blast off things but if you dont have much to do with the quality of music (i know you do)and
just want boom and shake the doors and windows of your neighbour the you are looking at the wrong place ,these speakers are made with one aim and that is quality sound so turn off
the light and relax on your bed with your partner enjoy your favourite song and dont focus on blasting others ear drum just
buy them dont give asecond thought....thanku edifiers for making such alovely speaker ,i am from india have a wonderful day.
Received different remote controller than what is shown in the pictures.
The only thing I'd have liked a bit different is an input select on the unit, and a reverse stero dip switch so the power outlet speaker position was more versatile. Don't like the remote reliance for the blue tooth either. But, the functionality and switches are what they are and anytime the speakers are pumping I couldn't care less about the remote or cabling. These sound FANTASTIC for the money.
I know the audiophile crowd knock this unit for the bass heavy neutral eq, and I can hear what they're saying. The resonance of the box does carry the lower Hz a bit, but the fidelity of the unit's envelope is still great with the bass knob turned down a touch. And inversely, when I want to listen to DnB/HipHop and let the bass rip it's perfect for such a moderatly powered set up.
Anything else I've tried in the price range in the computer desk category is definitely inferrior. If you're thinking of spending similar money on a Logitec set, skip'em. Get the Edifier. Logitch is fine with your mouse buisness.
Upon hooked them up, the difference in sound quality from the other speakers was instantly noticeable. I was playing 35-40 year old vinyl through the RCA connection and everything sounded so crisp and clear. The treble, bass and volume controls allow you to adjust the settings to your liking and the remote control allows you to switch between RCA connection and Bluetooth connection easily. If you really wanted to upset the neighbours with these speakers, you definitely could!
Overall, I would say that these speakers are incredible value for money. If you are expecting tons of bells and whistles, you might want to consider paying more for higher end speakers/ amp set up but for easy-to-use, strong performance and quality build, for under $200, I certainly have not found anything close to these bad boys! Definitely recommend!
The build of the speakers seems to be sturdy enough, and the cables ( both power and speaker ) provided are quite long and very thick.
The speakers are wonderful when placed correctly in medium/ large room.
Personally I am using them connected to the FiiO K5 via RCA cables, playing from a docked FiiO X3II. Works beautifully and sound is nice and clear. Treble and Bass are set neutral and for me the sound is perfect.
I have tested the Bluetooth capabilities as well playing music from an Android tablet and 2 different cellphones. No issues and connection is quick and painless. Sound is still good. You cannot connect multiple tablets/cellphones to them - only one. Once something is connected to it already, the speakers cannot be found when searching for them.
The remote comes in handy and while is not matching the finish and feel of the speakers, I am happy to have it. The speakers are literally set inside a bookshelf cabinet away from my computer and I do not have to get up every time to change the volume or switch between Line in / Bluetooth :). Lazy life, happy life :D.
With 2 separate speakers, stereo soundstage and separation is manageable with maintaing distance between speakers, which is missing in most of Bluetooth single piece speakers available now a days.
Added my first Edifier in my many good sounding speakers collection from Bose, Herman Kardon, Yamaha, Polk Audio and Amazon Eco & Eco dot.
While choosing this speaker, keep in mind that this system is using 4 inch driver with tweeter. Which can not be compared with other systems sound reproduction level with larger drivers - 6 inch / 8 inch. Having 4 inch driver, sound reproduction and frequency response is good and giving smooth listening experience.
Quick delivery in less than 10 hours from Amazon Delivery Services. Good Packaging, received product in great condition👍
What is Great - Clarity of sound is amazing. Vocals are warm and Crystal Clear. You will love the smoothness of the sound. Mids are perfetly balanced and highs are quite sharp. Bass is not over bearing but good enough. The same songs now sound so new. Love the quality of the sound. And the wooden panels give it a classy look.
What's not so great - I wish they were slightly more louder to completely immerse me with sound of the music. Grill could have been better and audio cables (apart from the thick cable to connect the two speakers) look cheap. And lastly, if you are looking for floor thumping bass, this is not for you. Bluetooth version is old .Why not BT5 ?
Edifier , please bring the big brother S2000 pro to India soon.
Ok, the battery drawer finally came out.
Was in backwards.
After a bunch more fiddling with Bluetooth, these are connected.
Sound is great.
Connecting through Bluetooth is easy and it hasn't dropped out at all like it does with another Bluetooth speaker I have after a few hours of play.
I’m sure $1000 speakers would sound better, but for $179 these are a steal! They really do sound pretty good. I’d be curious to hear the next level up that Edifier offers for $100 more.
I recommend these speakers.
At first they sounded very good, yet too quiet to be worth the money.
Then, with that flick of the line switch everything came roaring to life! Wow! Clear, crisp sound, nice clean highs with low, undistorted bass.
I haven't heard music sound so nice in a while! I'm sure that's partially due to listening to uncompressed sound on records, but these speakers really do it justice!
These are definitely worth the money!
one annoying thing about this speaker is a control, the Bluetooth and line-in option only appear on the remote control. if you lost or damage the remote control, the speakers are done.
I played a couple rock, jazz and classical songs on the speakers and enjoyed the separation and tonality... Played the opening scene of Star Trek and found the audio level to be quite immersive and not overpowering.
Higher volumes did distort a bit, but you mostly lost lower frequencies with the high end holding together fairly well..
Overall I would say that these speakers are very well priced for what you get. Plus with Bluetooth connectivity, it gives you much more freedom over the placement of the speakers as more and more devices are coming Bluetooth enabled.
Yes I would definitely recommend these to others! I'm very happy I did the research into these speakers, excellent purchase that should last me years to come!
My only gripe is that the remote is a little fiddly and there is no physical Line/Bluetooth button on the speaker unit itself. Don't lose that remote!
